Okay maybe that's a bit hyperbolic, but this Husky defense inspires no confidence after the 45-38 loss at ASU playing against a walk-on quarterback of a 1-4 team in front of 1,500 fans. It was the familiar land of giving up 14 yards and 3rd and 12s and missed tackles and all the rest. In theory this 4-2 Husky team still has a Holiday Bowl berth to play for. But the defense is trending so badly that it's hard to see this team beating anyone other than Colorado and Cal in the weeks ahead. In this pod, the boys discuss the ASU loss and also speculate on what moves DeBoer needs to make and whether he and AD Cohen will deem to make them. Shout outs this week go to Grundle, AtomicDawg, PurpleBaze, Lawdawg1 and Fenderbender123. TheKnowledge had some thoughtful questions but the pod didn't ignore them we just ran out of time. ;)

This edition of the Life of Fitz podcast features host Tim Fitzgerald calling former Kansas State quarterback Brian Kavanagh, who played for the Wildcats in Fitz's first days of covering Kansas State athletics full-time. Kavanagh came to K-State in 1991 from Naperville, Ill., to play for Coach Bill Snyder, and he is believed to be the first college football player to use an NCAA rule loophole that is now known as "grayshirting." He played for the Wildcats starting in 1993, K-State's first bowl appearance under Snyder and the school's first bowl victory at the Copper Bowl, and then stepped in for starter Matt Miller at the 1995 Holiday Bowl when Miller suffered a concussion. Kavanagh completed 18 of 24 passes and threw for four touchdowns in K-State's 54-21 victory over Colorado State, a performance that earned him a spot in the Holiday Bowl Hall of Fame. He then went on to lead the Wildcats to a 9-3 record and a berth in the Cotton Bowl as the Wildcats' starter in 1996, his senior season. He now lives in Salina, Kansas, where he and his wife raised four children, the youngest of which, Parker, is set to be a walk-on quarterback for the Wildcats beginning with the 2022 season. *** Tim Fitzgerald is a sports journalist who writes, does TV, radio and is a long-time podcaster. He has served as publisher of GoPowercat.com, a website that focuses on Kansas State sports, for nearly 25 years. Fitz also has stage four prostate cancer, so during the initial stages of the pandemic, his doctors have advised him to stay home and lay low. Helen Fong, one of the few women practicing architecture in the US in the 1950s, is best known for her “Googie” California coffee shop architectural style. Pann's Coffee Shop, Denny's, Bob's Big Boy— those bold, iconic, futuristic restaurants of the 1950s and 60s— there are thousands of them, not just in Los Angeles, where they were born, but across the country. These family restaurants are core to how America defined itself after World War II. Cars, families, space flight, modernism....the new world order. Pioneering architect Helen Fong helped define that futuristic look. Helen Fong was born in Los Angeles' Chinatown in 1927. One of five children she grew up working in the family's laundry business. In 1949 she received a degree in city planning from UC Berkeley, moved back to Los Angeles and got her first job working as a secretary for architect Eugene Choy. Two years later, she began working for Armet and Davis, well known for its work in the “Googie” architectural style. Modern, wild, whimsical—some of Fong's most famous projects include Pann's Restaurant, Johnie's Coffee Shop, and Holiday Bowl, created to catch the eye of America's fast growing car culture of the 1950s and 60s. This story was produced by New Angle: Voice of the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation with host Cynthia Phifer Kracauer, AIA. Podcast production by Brandi Howell.

Orange County Register Beat Writer UCLA Football Beat Writer joins us to talk about the Holiday Bowl, Chip Kelly, Martin Jarmond and how many UCLA football athletes were recognized for their brilliant play.  We talk to the Bruins fans doubters, and relate what they feel success is to someone trying to go on a diet and lose weight. They work out the whole season and scale doesn't show them the results they want, but they ignore all the other parts of their health that got better. UCLA's record is the scale and that is all Bruins fans look at, they don't look at the whole picture. They might find some brightness in our future.Hope you enjoy. K-State began the 2017 season in the Top 25 and were labeled by many prognosticators as a dark horse Big 12 title candidate. Injuries to multiple quarterbacks led to a sputtering offense in the early portion of the Big 12 slate. While the Wildcats were taken out of Big 12 title contention early, Snyder and Company, yet again, managed to rally the troops. The 'Cats won five out of their final six games: - K-State's ninth straight win in the Sunflower Showdown; Mike Lee now 0-2 in this game, for those of you scoring at home - Skylar Thompson helps lead KSU to an OT victory over Texas Tech in Lubbock - Snyder picks up his first EVER win over a Top 10 foe on the road as K-State holds on for dear life in Stillwater against Oklahoma State - A walk-off win over Iowa State on Senior Day in BSFS - 'Cats mow down UCLA in the Cactus Bowl; Snyder picks up back-to-back bowl wins for the first time since the '99 Holiday Bowl and '00 Cotton Bowl

Picked to finish in the basement of the 1992 WAC standings in the spring, this band of brothers were special. While they had future NFL studs like Jason Elam & Ma'a Tanuvasa, this grindy bunch that executed Paul Johnson's Flexbone offense to perfection & a swift and punishing defense won the WAC title and brought pride to the islands and the University's first mainland bowl victory with the 1992 Holiday Bowl. Many former players are still big coaching figures in NCAA football today, and this team will be forever treasured and remembered by those who watched their improbable run to greatness.
