Last year in Palo Alto, Oregon Football stumbled to an overtime loss to a Stanford Cardinal team that took the wind out of their sails after the upset win @ #3 Ohio State. Now coming into Autzen Stadium this weekend, the Cardinal haven't won a Pac-12 game since their upset over the Ducks last year. Oregon is a heavy favorite at home, and this Stanford team is one that the Ducks are capable of getting a comfortable win against as they've struggled so far in 2022. On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin takes a look at this week's opponent for the Ducks--one who has caused them to stumble many times in the past. Their offense and defense have struggled this season, and Oregon should expect to find success on both sides of the ball this week. Plus, a look at who the Cardinal's best individual players are heading into the matchup, led by QB Tanner McKee. Today's show also features a couple mailbag questions and some news updates on the Ducks going into their game with the Cardinal. RB Byron Cardwell has had a murky past couple weeks with mixed reports on his injury status combined with a potentially reduced role, could he leave the progrum at some point? Also, another listener asks about the secondary's inconsistent play this season and how it can improve going forward. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - went into overtime Saturday night and into Sunday morning to break down their thoughts after the No. 18 Washington Huskies defeated the Stanford Cardinal 40-22 at Husky Stadium. It was a game where the Huskies did so many things right in terms of the mechanics of the game - no turnovers, forced three Stanford miscues, ran the ball, kept Stanford's run game in check, played strong field position, and always came back in a positive way after the Cardinal scored - yet there was still so much more meat left on the bone. Starting with the offense, Michael Penix, Jr. had another 300-yard passing game, but he was not the same quarterback that sliced and diced Michigan State the week before. Did the new Heisman talk start to seep in a little bit? Wayne Taulapapa ran for a career-high 120 yards, the first time he's ever run for more than 100 yards in a game in his career, and the running backs did enough to help Penix to keep the Cardinal defense off-balance. It was also the first game back for left tackle Jaxson Kirkland, and he looked pretty sharp in his 2022 debut. Obviously it's also the first time he's worked side-by-side with Troy Fautanu this season, so they will continue to improve as the season goes on. Rome Odunze caught up with the other three UW receivers that have 100-yard games - Jalen McMillan, Ja'Lynn Polk, and Giles Jackson - with 161 yards on 8 catches. After a quick break, talk turned to the defensive side of the ball, and the Huskies did a really good job of taking away Stanford's version of the 'slow mesh' RPO offense. The Cardinal weren't able to complete a successful shot play until there was 5 minutes left in the second quarter, and this was against a UW secondary that was without Jordan Perryman or Mishael Powell, their starting cornerbacks. The key was getting to Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee, and the Huskies did that to the tune of 8 sacks and 10 total tackles for loss. Bralen Trice and Alphonzo Tuputala each had two sacks, and Jeremiah Martin and Zion Tupuola-Fetui had 1.5 sacks apiece. The guys also gave mention to the special teams stars, namely Peyton Henry (who had 4 field goals on the night) and Carson Bruener, who has turned himself into a cover team demon. We wrap up the podcast with our final thoughts as the Huskies get back to work in anticipation of a short week. They become Road Dawgs for the first time this year, traveling to UCLA for a Friday night game at the Rose Bowl. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - are back on the airwaves talking about Washington's opponent this weekend, the Stanford Cardinal. And while the Cardinal had a bye week to get healthy and regroup after a 41-28 loss to USC, they are walking a little wounded coming to Seattle for this Pac-12 matchup. With no EJ Smith, the Cardinal (1-1) will have to rely on Casey Filkins to help fill the running back responsibilities, and it looks like either Barrett Miller or Connor McLaughlin will have to replace starting right tackle Myles Hinton, who won't be making the trip up north. The guys talked first about Stanford's offense, what Cardinal quarterback Tanner McKee will have to do without Smith to help balance out their offensive attack, and also a bunch of talk about the wrinkle David Shaw debuted versus USC, the 'slow mesh' RPO game. Originally designed by the coaches at Wake Forest, will the new twist in Stanford's offense cause issues for Washington, or will they continue to pin their ears back and go full tilt for the backfield, led by their talented EDGE players? After a quick break, the guys turn the tables and talk about one of the biggest storylines going in all of college football right now; the massive resurgence of Washington's offense under the leadership of first-year head coach Kalen DeBoer and Offensive Coordinator Ryan Grubb. Indiana transfer quarterback Michael Penix Jr. has been nothing short of outstanding through the first three games of the season, throwing for nearly 400 yards and four touchdowns in their last game, a win over No. 9/11 Michigan State that catapulted Penix into early Heisman Trophy discussions. The guys talked about Richard Newton perhaps being the answer to UW's short-yardage and goal line concerns, as well as how well the receiving corps is doing and how their play has done nothing but open up big opportunities for the tight ends to make their mark in the receiving game. Stanford did make a fundamental scheme change during the offseason, going from a 3-4 base defense to an even front that may resemble Washington's 4-2-5 base. After another quick break, Scott updated us on the latest recruiting scuttlebutt coming out of this past weekend, and Kim also provided a quick hoops recruiting update too, as the Huskies have been hosting a couple of official visitors. Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds spoke this week to Jackson Moore of Cardinal247, the 247Sports site that covers the team the Washington Huskies host this weekend, the Stanford Cardinal. To start, Moore breaks down the Stanford offense, a unit that will be missing its top running back in EJ Smith. But they have added a new wrinkle in the 'slow mesh' RPO that Wake Forest uses, and Moore talked about that. Jackson also goes through the top targets that Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee will lean on to help move the Cardinal offense down the field. Moore also gives his opinion on the position group he feels is holding the offense back. After a quick break, the talk turned to the defense. Stanford did give up 41 points and 505 yards of total offense. Moore talked about the much more publicized change in their defensive scheme from a 3-4 to an even front to help shore up concerns along the defensive line. Jackson mentioned the defensive players UW fans should pay attention to when the Huskies have the ball on offense. Moore also gives a couple of keys on how he thinks Stanford's defense can be beaten (hint: it starts along the line of scrimmage). Moving to special teams, Moore notes a potential dilemma for Stanford; Casey Filkins is considered their best returner, but without EJ Smith, would they risk having Filkins back there since he is also their top available running back? To finish the preview off, Moore talks about a couple of keys for Stanford to be able to pull the victory, as well as what UW could do against the Cardinal to win at home. The guys road tripped back from the Bay Area and are ready to breakdown everything they saw and heard from Lincoln Riley's first road win and Pac-12 win as the Trojans head coach. The guys discuss the Trojan offense coming out of the gate on fire, scoring touchdowns on five-straight possessions without even facing a third down, but then failing to find the end zone in the second half, settling for three field goal attempts. Defensively Riley praised the explosive plays (four more turnovers and five sacks) while acknowledging the need to shore things up on that side of the ball (441 yards allowed). Not too long ago, the Stanford Cardinal football program reigned supreme in the PAC-12 conference and was one of college football's most feared programs. However, the Cardinal has fallen apart recently, and Stanford is now a hollow shell of its former self. David Shaw remains the head coach throughout these hard times, and this should give Cardinal fans hope for a turnaround in the program soon rather than later. There are plenty of aspects to like about Stanford Cardinal football, including quarterback Tanner McKee. McKee showed off exceptional talent in his first season as a starter in Palo Alto, California, and another season behind a good offensive line and weapons like Benjamin Yurosek and Elijah Higgins could see him take that next step forward. Defensively, it doesn't get much lower than what the Cardinal put out in 2021, but a new-look defensive scheme and the return of stars like Kyu Blu Kelly may be able to right the ship in 2022. As for its matchup with the Arizona State Sun Devils football program in week eight, the game may be closer than last year's bout. The Sun Devil decimated and embarrassed the Cardinal 28-10 and picked apart everything that Stanford tried to do. Could that be different in 2022 with the game returning to Palo Alto? Host Richie Bradshaw gives his thoughts on this game for our continued breakdown series of the 2022 Arizona State Sun Devils football schedule on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast. Stanford Football has been, surprisingly, trending down under head coach David Shaw for the last couple of (full) seasons in the Pac-12. After being a model of consistency for about a decade, the Cardinal now find themselves attempting to rebuild themselves back into a winner in the conference of champions. Plus, David Shaw may be coaching in 2022 to keep himself off the hot seat or worse if Stanford finds themselves well under .500 once again. On today's episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin goes through the 2022 schedule for the Stanford Cardinal. After an easy opening game, conference play begins in week 2 when the Cardinal welcome USC to Palo Alto. Although that's not likely to be a win, having a quality opponent at home is a fortunate theme for the Cardinal in 2022 that should allow them to regain their footing and be, at least, a .500 football team. The Cardinal's other home games include Washington State, Arizona State, Oregon State, and BYU. Any one of those opponents would be tough games for Stanford to win this year if they were played on the road, but playing them inside Stanford Stadium is a big advantage for David Shaw's team. Between Notre Dame and BYU, the Cardinal have a tough slate of non-conference opponents--a win against one of them is not likely, while the other could be one of their best wins of the year. At the same time, other programs like the Arizona State Sun Devils, University of Arizona Wildcats, Washington Huskies, Washington State Cougars, and Stanford Cardinal do enough to stay afloat and the "best of the rest," being the University of California Golden Bears, Oregon State Beavers, and Colorado Buffaloes kind of just existing in the conference. As if this "good enough" conference wasn't being overlooked enough, two programs have opted to depart the PAC-12 conference altogether, with the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins headed to the BIG-10 conference in 2024. Calling this earth-shattering would be an understatement. Not that we are ones for shouting that the sky is falling, but these two departures could just be the start for the PAC-12. The BIG-10 is also reportedly looking at Oregon and Washington, as well. If they jump ship as well, what will be left for the remainder of the conference? The ten schools still in the conference past 2024 (for now) should probably start looking for a new conference to join, and this should include our beloved Arizona State Sun Devils. Host Richie Bradshaw gives a heartfelt opinion on the state of the once-proud and self-proclaimed "conference of champions" and what our Arizona State Sun Devils should be thinking about over the next couple of years on this important edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast. Stanford Football is coming off just its second losing season since 2009--both have come in the last three years. Expectations are one again fairly lofty for QB Tanner McKee, who showed just why he has Cardinal fans buzzing during the 2022 Spring Showcase. With the rules slanted in favor of the offense, McKee was sharp completing 8 of 10 passes including 3 touchdowns with no interceptions. Without a way to register "official points" the Stanford defense looked much improved in the run defense department from a season ago. On this episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin, takes a look at how the Stanford Cardinal have been gearing up this Spring for what they hope will be a bounce back 2022 campaign. With the offense grabbing the headlines from what David Shaw called a "glorified scrimmage", there were several offensive standouts who will probably see major playing time this Fall. RB EJ Smith IV is poised to take the lead ball-carrier role from Austin Jones (transferred to USC), and he looked like a true #1 running back in the scrimmage. WR Media Reuben and TE Sam Roush, both true freshmen who are early enrollees, were also among the offensive standouts. If Stanford is going to avoid back-to-back losing seasons under David Shaw (it would be the first time that happened), the Cardinal need to get back to their roots. As an offensive coach, David Shaw has always wanted to play power football to establish a running game, and that (along with a physical defensive front) is what Stanford needs to get back to in order to compete in the Pac-12 North. After bringing in the 19th-best class of incoming freshman in the Class of 2022, one question going forward is how much those young players will be able to contribute for the Cardinal this year. Caleb is here to preview the biggest events in the world of sports this upcoming weekend. He starts with the NCAA hardwood where the Women & Men are both playing their final four games and seeing who will cut down the nets for a Championship out of the South Carolina Gamecocks, Louisville Cardinals, Stanford Cardinal and UConn Huskies for the Women, and the Duke Blue Devils, North Carolina Tar Heels, Kansas Jayhawks and Villanova Wildcats. Then it's to the ice as the St. Louis Blues try to maintain their spot in the Central division as they face the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames, and the Los Angeles Lakers try to hold their 10th spot in the West to stay in a play-in game as they face the New Orleans Pelicans and the Denver Nuggets. Last but not least it is Premier League Soccer as we watch the race for first and the race to see if anyone can get to 17th and stay out of the relegation zone. The Women's Final Four tips off tonight, and there are some mouth-watering matchups: Top-ranked South Carolina, led by national player of the year Aliyah Boston, square off against relative underdogs Louisville, led by fiery guard Haley Van Lith. Then, UConn will play in its fourteenth consecutive Final Four (yes, you read that correctly), and will hope that shooting sensation Paige Bueckers can lead them to victory over the defending champion Stanford Cardinal amd reigning Final Four MVP Haley Jones. The Athletic's Chantel Jennings joins us to break down the key matchups and storylines to follow, and to discuss how the electric slide, Barack Obama, and Jimmy Kimmel have factored into the tournament. Plus, after the uproar over inequality during last year's NCAA tournament, how much have things really changed?More from Chantel Jennings:https://theathletic.com/author/chantel-jennings/ See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This week on Inside the Headset, we are featuring Stanford's Wide Receivers Coach, Bobby Kennedy. Coach Kennedy shares the positive impact that coaching mentors have played in his life, highlights the importance of setting players up for success after their football career, and speaks on the benefits of being involved with the AFCA. Bobby Kennedy is entering his fifth season as the Wide Receivers Coach for the Stanford Cardinal. Despite injuries plaguing the Cardinal wide receiving corps, Kennedy's group was a bright spot of the Stanford offense week in and week out during the 2021 season. Throughout his time leading the Cardinal receiving unit, Kennedy has produced multiple All Pac-12 selections, NFL Draft picks, and record breakers that have rewritten the Stanford record books. Kennedy brought 26 years of collegiate coaching experience to Palo Alto. His most recent stops included four years as the wide receivers coach at Iowa (2013-16), and he held the same position at Colorado (2011-12). The Hawkeyes reached a bowl game in all four years of Kennedy's tenure, including a perfect 12-0 regular season record in 2015, when Iowa won the West Division of the Big Ten Conference, participated in the 2016 Rose Bowl and ended the season in the top-10 of the national rankings. Kennedy joined the Colorado staff after spending time in Texas, where he spent seven seasons (2004-10) as wide receivers coach, the last six as the assistant recruiting coordinator. In his time at Texas, Kennedy coached in two BCS National Championship games, the 2005 Rose Bowl victory over USC when the Longhorns won the national championship, and in 2009 against Alabama. Kennedy's first season in Austin came immediately after the Longhorns had lost three wide receivers to the NFL. He proceeded to build a receiving corps that included three Biletnikoff Award candidates, including two semifinalists and one finalist. Kennedy joined the Texas program from Washington, where he tutored wide receiver Reggie Williams to two All-America campaigns before he became the ninth overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. Kennedy also coached running backs at Arizona in 2001, and had a six-year tenure at Wake Forest, coaching the Demon Deacon running backs in 1999-2000 after four years (1995-98) as receivers coach before getting his coaching start at the University of Wyoming. The Texas Longhorns' baseball team had a tough weekend in Lubbock, as the pitching staff struggled nearly top to bottom -- dropping the weekend series but avoiding the sweep with a run-rule win on Sunday. It seems like the pitching staff has been falling apart since Tanner Witt ended his season due to injury, but how did it get so bad so fast and what can Texas do to fix it? Thankfully for David Pierce and his coaching staff, the bats seem to be able to try and keep pace with opponents as Texas tries to figure it out. The Texas women's basketball team made its second-consecutive trip to the Elite 8 thanks to a convincing win over the Ohio State Buckeyes before falling to the Stanford Cardinal in a tough game. We look back on what can only be described as yet another successful season, with a young Texas team playing well ahead of schedule -- signaling big things to come.
