Tonight on The Brian Crombie Hour, Brian interviews Charles St-Arnaud, Chief Economist of Alberta Central, about the risks of and economic impacts of Alberta Separation. Charles has over 17 years of experience as an economist in the public and private sectors, both in Canada and internationally (New York, London, Hong Kong). Charles was at the Department of Finance in Ottawa during the global financial crisis, where he advised senior officials on economic policy. He has also worked for the Bank of Canada and Morgan Stanley.Charles St-Arnaud discussed the topic of Alberta separation, comparing it to Quebec's desire for separation and Brexit. Charles notes that Alberta's reasons for separation are more economically driven than culturally motivated, similar to Brexit. He suggests that Alberta is not fully realizing how the global energy market has changed since the early 2010s, making it unlikely to experience another economic boom like the one in 2010. Brian ends this episode with some of his own thoughts on separation desires in Quebec, Brexit, Alberta, and even Peel.
The Public Service Association says lifting public sector board member paychecks is total hypocrisy. A quietly-released Cabinet paper reveals annual governance board chair fees have jumped from up to $90,000, to more than $160,000. PSA National Secretary Fleur Fitzsimons says this decision comes from the same leaders who cancelled pay equity claims and offered meagre minimum-wage increases. "It's astonishing from a Government that was elected on addressing the cost of living crisis - and it seems for low-income workers and middle-income workers, this Government is nowhere to be seen." More money's discreetly finding its way into the pockets of public sector board members. A quietly released Cabinet document reveals governance board chairs could now be paid more than $160 thousand. Annual fees had previously been capped at about $90 thousand. Public Service Minister Judith Collins told Mike Hosking these people are often responsible for large sums of money and assets. She says if we want good people to reform the public service and get Crown entities humming, we have to pay for it. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

These are stackable and recognised across institutions.Embed learning into your workplace – apply course content directly to your current role through reflective assessments and practical tasks that reinforce learning outcomes. For those wanting to create a course, co-design with practitioners for relevance – when developing or selecting a course, involve subject matter experts and end users to ensure the content is job-ready and aligned with sector.Show notes Express your interest or find out more about the APS Academy microcredentials | APSC websiteExplore other learning opportunities with the APS Academy learning | APS AcademySubscribe to hear the latest news, events and offerings from the APS Academy | APS Academy Hosted on Acast. On this episode of Disunion, host David R. Osborne welcomes Sarah Harbison of the Pelican Institute to unpack the high-stakes legislative drama surrounding Louisiana's recent public-sector union reform bill. What began as a straightforward “opt-in” bill—requiring government union members to annually confirm their membership and allowing them to resign at any time—quickly turned into a political showdown. Despite early momentum and support from the governor, the bill was gutted in the final hours of the session, raising serious questions about union influence, transparency, and legislative process.Sarah and David explore how unions wield power behind the scenes, the First Amendment implications of restrictive membership clauses, and what it will take to bring meaningful reform back to the table in 2026.Whether you're a policy junkie or a public employee looking to understand your rights, this episode is a must-listen.

CeADAR, Ireland's Centre for AI, this month celebrated enrolling its 1,500th learner in AI for You, an online course for Irish enterprises and public sector organisations who want to increase their AI awareness and literacy and boost their knowledge of regulations governing AI, such as the EU AI Act. The AI for You programme was developed by CeADAR in conjunction with the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment (DETE). The course is fully funded, supported by CeADAR's European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH) for AI programme, which itself is funded by Enterprise Ireland and the European Commission. The programme is self-paced, so it can be completed in a learner's own time, and is made up of five modules, including introduction to AI, the concepts underpinning AI, the applications and impacts of AI, the future with AI, and AI governance and the EU AI Act. The first-ever legal framework on AI, the EU AI Act sets out rules for AI providers and those that deploy AI technology on the specific uses of AI. The EU AI Act came into effect in August last year. Those interested in enrolling in the programme can do so by following the instructions on the CeADAR website (www.ceadar.ie/edih/skills-and-training/). The EDIH is a €700m European initiative comprising of more than 160 tech hubs across 30 countries. CeADAR's selection as the EDIH for AI in Ireland came with an initial funding boost of €6 million over three years. The award is jointly supported by the EU and the Government of Ireland through Enterprise Ireland. Minister Smyth, Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation said: "I am very pleased with the success of the AI for You online course and I congratulate CeADAR on the achievement of enrolling the 1500th learner. This reflects the growing appetite for AI skills in Ireland but also our commitment to equipping citizens and businesses with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive in the digital age." CeADAR's Director of Innovation and Development and EDIH for AI Programme Director, Dr. Ricardo Simon Carbajo said: "This is a significant milestone and is contributing to companies and public sector organisation's ability to understand and comply with the EU AI Act. We thank all those who signed up for this course and look forward to welcoming more in the future." See more stories here. Deniz Ari: How Intense Delivery Pressure Destroyed Team Trust, Culture, and Brought Burnout Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Working in the public sector, Deniz faced a challenging situation during a particularly busy winter period when the client wanted to combine multiple major initiatives simultaneously: migration, new features, and security improvements. This led to an oversized team of 25 engineers, which ultimately caused significant problems. The pressure to continuously deliver became overwhelming, breaking team trust and leaving members feeling abandoned. Several team members left, the team culture disintegrated, and cases of burnout emerged. After this difficult experience, Deniz conducted a comprehensive retrospective to process what happened and provide feedback to management about the dangers of excessive pressure in Scrum environments. Self-reflection Question: How might you recognize the early warning signs of team burnout before it reaches a critical point, and what boundaries would you establish to protect your team?
