How has the board game industry changed in the last 5 years? Brian co-founded Overworld Games about 6 years before this was recorded so it's also a view of how things have changed between when he started publishing games and now. Here is the top 5 list: 5) More games in big box retailers 4) It's easier to make games 3) Kickstarter explosion 2) Growth of games at conventions 1) Distribution is harder
What movie would you like made into a board game? More importantly, how to you gain the license for that movie? Brian Henk of Overworld Games talks to Alan about obtaining licenses, life after failing a Kickstarter, and Overworld's latest game currently on Kickstarter, New Salem: The Constable. Ed Baraf sits down with Brian Henk to discuss the history of experiments tried at Overworld Games, such as using IPs or releasing a game outside of Kickstarter -- and how games have done in terms of profitability and copies sold. Going through what went well and what didn't may give other creators some insight into what they should and should not do. Video Version: https://youtu.be/xMkEDTgVk5w
If you like bits and tangents, then oh boy, this is the episode for you! We're talking U2, Lawry's Seasoned Salt, horses, and the animated TV show Centurions. Plus somehow, we manage to make time to talk about the 2018 game Barker's Row from Overworld Games and designed by Steven Aramini.
DMG has purchased full ownership of Valiant, and the leadership that forged the Valiant Universe for the last six years has been forced out, or has left the company. We haven't yet fully seen the new shape of Valiant, and it is not clear that things will stay up, or if we may see another downturn. The original OTV duo, Sean and Chiclo, get together to discuss the changes happening at Valiant as a result of this purchase by DMG, what the changes may mean, what we might expect as a result, and what we will be paying attention to as this story develops. As we meander, we discuss some of the great hits of the last few years, and some of the Classic Valiant comics of yesteryear, and what we saw as the Classic Valiant comics declined due to the purchase by Acclaim. How hard do we think it will be for Valiant to keep the publishing line going like it has? What is the best case scenario? What is the worst case scenario? Plus, we are giving away a copy of Ninjak Vs The Valiant Universe card game, courtesy of Overworld Games. Tune in for contest details!
Episode 146: Outside Trends Length: 57:39 Show Links: RSS | iTunes | Stitcher | Download Episode Welcome back to Vox Republica, the Cardboard Republic Podcast! We post new episodes every other Thursday, with each episode being about 45 minutes long. Vox Republica is proudly supported by our Patreon. Consider contributing today! DESCRIPTION: This week, Erin and Ryan mention a certain Gen Con panel, recap some games that hit the table recently, ponder over the latest Monopoly hype, talk about the progress made (and still needed to go) with diversity in gaming, and then discuss at length outside influences that affect trends within the gaming industry. Phew! Did we miss anything? GUESTS: None RECENTLY PLAYED GAMES - (03:36): Tau Ceti by Out Limit Games (BGG Link) Leaders of Euphoria by Overworld Games (BGG Link) Exit: The Game - The Pharaoh's Tomb by Thames & Kosmos (BGG Link) QUICK TOPICS – (17:49): Monopoly Gamer is a new Nintendo-themed version of Monopoly that was just released, and is being sold exclusively through GameStop for the first month. There was also a bunch of social chatter about it immediately upon release. We chat about both the game and the oddly-sudden hype around it. A recent article appeared titled "A Seat at the Table: Board Gaming is for Us Too", reflects on board gaming as a member of a minority group, both in terms of why African-American and Latino youths often avoid board games over video games and how even though board gaming is making overtures towards progress of diversity and inclusion, it still has a ways to go from an outside perspective. FEATURED TOPIC - (28:44): Video games, pop culture, and, more recently, live action games/activities are just a few examples of areas that have had a huge impact on the board game industry. Which had us wondering: where exactly do gaming trends come from outside the traditional mold of publishers and designers. We look at a few areas, such as: Video games Live action activities such as escape rooms The impact of influencers The relationship between small but engaged communities with the ability to control game designs and publications And of course, society as a whole PLUGS - (57:06): We're doing a Gen Con panel! If you're going, come check out Cardboard Quills: A Written Reviewer Roundtable - a written reviewer Q&A. (If you can't make it, feel free to still leave a question you'd like asked and we can see if we can get it answered!) We’re raffling off a copy of Rolling America (plus a surprise!) to a lucky Patreon backer. Consider donating today! Brian Henk from Overworld Games talks blind playtesting and how critical it is. We are at Protospiel San Jose and he is watching families sit down and play his game, Barker's Row, without him being able to explain anything or say anything. Talk about a tough job. We talk about making it in the board game industry and the success of his past Kickstarter games.

In this episode of Legal Moves, I continue my conversation with game designers Brian Henk and Jeremy Commandeur of the Forbidden Limb podcast and Overworld Games. We discuss the pitfalls of working from home as a solo game developer, some ways to avoid those issues, and what it means when something is in the Public Domain. We also touch on some issues related to using someone else's trademarks in your game, where I absolutely am not giving legal advice to Brian! Stay tuned for Part 3 of our conversation next week.
