Conceptual photographer Hrair Sarkissian moves between Syria, Armenia, and Turkey, capturing present absences in personal and political histories in the 20th and 21st centuries.Hrair Sarkissian uses photography, installation, moving image, and sound to reflect on social issues, often silenced or obscured from view. Born and raised in Syria, the grandson of refugees of the Armenian Genocide in 1915, much of his work explores the lived experiences of intergenerational trauma, with respect to individuals and diverse diasporic communities.Sweet & Sour (2021-2022), a three-channel video installation currently on view at Wolverhampton Art Gallery, reflects on memory and storytelling. Hrair discusses the significance of the Maruta Mountain in Armenian culture, and shares images of his ancestral home of Khantsorig, a village in the Sassoun region of present-day Turkey. We also explore the role of emotion and subjectivity in his practice, contrasting his approach to series like Last Seen (2018-2021) with the more detached, extractive approaches typical of photojournalism.Hrair explains his early training at his father's photographic studio in Damascus, and the role of Armenians in the development of studio photography in Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. With Sea of Trees (2025), we move between Hrair's exhibition environments to the volcanic Aokigahara forest on Mount Fuji, discussing how different cultural narratives and contexts have inspired his artistic practice. We look towards new works in production for an international art festival in Japan, and suggest of the long-term creative relationships within his own career that also connect times, places, and migrations - returning to Wolverhampton with Deathscape (2021), an audio installation for British Art Show 9 in 2021.Hrair Sarkissian: Other Pains is at Wolverhampton Art Gallery until 22 June 2025. Lubaina Himid talks to Ben Luke about her influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work. Himid was born 1954 in Zanzibar and lives today in Preston, UK. Her paintings, sculptures and installations are an invitation to consider marginalised figures, communities and diasporic cultures, to expand the histories that frame our worldview, and ultimately to effect change. From the 1980s, Lubaina has been both artist and organiser, a prolific collaborator, and a crucial voice in establishing a platform for Black artists and women artists in the UK and beyond. Engaging directly with historic and contemporary injustice and structural racism, while relating personal and intimate experiences and feelings, and reinterpreting and reimagining Western art history, her work is rigorously critical and yet poetic, sensuous, humorous and often joyous. She talks about the early impact of Stanley Spencer and Bridget Riley, the inexhaustible influence of William Hogarth, her curatorial work of the mid-1980s and her admiration for her peer in the Black British Arts movement Claudette Johnson. She also reflects on the influence of writers including Audre Lorde and Essex Hemphill. Plus, she gives insight into her life in the studio and answers our usual questions, including the ultimate: what is art for?Lubaina Himid with Magda Stawarska: Another Chance Encounter, Kettle's Yard, Cambridge, 12 July-2 November; Connecting Thin Black Lines, Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, 24 June-7 September. This week, we are trapped inside and beset by unnameable horrors in a dark corner of the Great White North. Sammy from the Gentlemen's Guide to Midnite Cinema pops in to discuss Pontypool (2008), directed by Bruce McDonald, followed by the notorious SOV act of lunacy, Things (1989), directed (if that's what you can call it?) by Andrew Jordan. As well as pondering the profound cultural influence of language as a thing in and of itself, we also tackle some other philosophical questions such as: The possibly Saxon origins of the word, "fart". Kettle or urn, which is better? And just what the hell does "no cap" mean? It's not really possible to spoil Things (because it's not really possible to understand the plot, assuming there is one), but we will call out Spoiler Territory for Pontypool. If you want to skip ahead from that point, you can rejoin the conversation at the 1:33:23 mark to avoid spoilers. Want to get in touch? George Orwell writes, “If you look up ‘tea' in the first cookery book that comes to hand you will probably find that it is unmentioned; or at most you will find a few lines of sketchy instructions which give no ruling on several of the most important points. This is curious, not only because tea is one of the mainstays of civilization … but because the best manner of making it is the subject of violent disputes.” In this episode I got to sit down with Meagan Francis, a supporter and friend of Ancestral Kitchen and veteran podcaster herself. She is the host of The Kettle with Meagan Francis, which is a lovely podcast, and author of “The Last Parenting Book You'll Ever Read” which just came out this spring. Meagan also owns a tea and variety shop and in this episode she shared with me some surprising and interesting tidbits on the history of tea and how it was introduced to Western civilization, some of the finer points of sourcing and brewing, where some of our familiar tea traditions came from and what High Tea really means. We had so much to talk about that we overflowed into an Aftershow which will be available on Kitchen Table Chats, our private podcast of bonus episodes for podcast supporters. Gov. Josh Shapiro is warning that cuts to Medicaid health care that Congress is considering would mean billions of dollars in lost federal aid to Pennsylvania, hundreds of thousands of people losing access to the program and more rural hospitals shutting their doors. In Harrisburg, legislation designed to improve access to hospital financial-aid programs in Pennsylvania has been approved by the state House. Allegheny County Democrat Arvind Venkat authored the bill to prevent patients from falling into medical debt. The bill received strong bipartisan support, including from Republican Tim Twardzik of Schuylkill County. More than a thousand postdoctoral scholars and research associates at the University of Pennsylvania want to form a union. The school is challenging that move. It’s not even Memorial Day yet, but this year’s Fourth of July parade is already being cancelled by one Philadelphia-area township, amid security concerns. There is no definitive threat facing Whitemarsh Township in Montgomery County, but township officials are leaning on the side of safety. Lancaster City Council joined a chorus of municipalities voicing their support for a $15 minimum hourly wage in Pennsylvania. By a 7-0 vote, the council passed a resolution supporting House Bill 1150, which would more than double Pennsylvania’s minimum hourly wage, currently $7.25. As Rite Aid drug stores are preparing to shut down, Pennsylvania's Attorney General is advising customers of other, more crucial deadlines. AG Dave Sunday says June 6th is the final day consumers can use Rite Aid gift cards, coupons, bonus points, or other in-store rewards. A new $19.1 million dollar Lancaster County manufacturing facility opened this week and is ramping up production of bone broth and soup. The company Kettle & Fire is launching with 60 employees but plans to eventually grow to a workforce numbering close of 150. Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman is calling for bipartisanship in order to tackle the issue of air traffic safety. Fetterman took the opportunity to highlight a Pennsylvania school. He told Franklin McIntosh, the FAA's deputy head of air traffic control, about the Community College of Beaver County, the only school in Pennsylvania that offers FAA air traffic controller training. Hey baby. Yeah, you know we're chill. We can keep this whole thing casual. No strings attached. Oops...sorry, wrong post. Because we totally have strings attached this week, as Simon Chesterfield (aka Simon Barber) from UK indie pop faves The Chesterfields joins us to discuss our Top 5 Songs with Strings. The use of strings in pop music has traditionally been to contribute texture and dimension to a record. In the context of rock bands, it often symbolizes musical sophistication, grandeur, and the ambition to break outside of the standard band format. It's all very timely too, because Simon has just released his first solo album, Simon Chesterfield, in which he re-imagines six of his compositions as orchestral performances. This gorgeous album was co-produced by Ben Scott Turner, Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey) and Simon, and was orchestrated by Charles Harrison. It is now out on digital platforms and on limited edition 10-inch vinyl from Legere Recordings. Simon Barber is the co-founder, ever-present member, bassist, songwriter, and vocalist of The Chesterfields. Their jangling, exciting sound made them fixtures on the UK indie charts - with albums like their debut Kettle (1987, #5) and 1988's Crocodile Tears (#10), and singles like "Completely and Utterly" (1986, #16), "Ask Johnny Dee" (1987, #4), "Goodbye, Goodbye" (1988, #10), and "Blame" (1988, #11). Nearly two decades after lead singer Dave Goldsworthy's tragic death, Simon led a new lineup of The Chesterfields (featuring Loft guitarist and past O3L guest Andy Strickland, Helen Stickland and Rob Perry) on their first new album in 27 years, the marvelous New Modern Homes. She shares what it was like to be a “functioning alcoholic” at the height of her career, the pain and shame that fueled her drinking, and the pivotal moment that set her on a journey to self-acceptance and sobriety. Cheryl and Lisa dive deep into topics like body dysmorphia, the power of self-awareness, learning to trust your intuition, and the importance of rewriting your own narrative. If you've ever struggled with feeling “not enough,” battled unhealthy coping mechanisms, or wondered how to truly love yourself, this heart-to-heart is for you. Cheryl's story is a reminder that while healing is messy and ongoing, it's never too late to choose yourself and become the hero of your own life. In the daytime, hot air rises as the sun heats the ground. The rising column of air is called a thermal, and it's the perfect way for a Turkey Vulture to hitch a ride. Like an elevator to the skies, the thermal gently wafts the vultures upward. They move in a slowly ascending spiral around the thermal, rarely flapping and instead coasting on the breeze. When many vultures ride the same thermal, it's called a kettle.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter.
