Introit: "Oculi Omnium" By Charles Wood The South Church Chancel Choir Director, Organist, and Pianist: Frank R. Zilinyi
In the Orthodox Faith, we are taught that when we see the Cross we see our Deliverer and the instrument of our deliverance. Yes, our Lord suffered and was in agony upon the Cross. His suffering shows forth His unfathomable love for every soul. But, as St. Paul says, the Christian is to glory in the Cross of our Lord, Jesus Christ. It is the wood of Aaron's rod that budded with life. It is the tree that made the bitter and harmful waters of Marah sweet and life-giving. As the Introit of this Mass reveals, "But as for us, it behoveth us to glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whom is our salvation, our life, and resurrection; by whom we were saved and obtained our freedom."
April 12, 2025Today's Reading: Introit for Palm Sunday - Psalm 24:7-10; antiphon: Psalm 118:26Daily Lectionary: Exodus 7:1-25; Mark 16:1-20Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. (Psalm 24:7) In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Have you ever taken the time to notice the posture of someone who is struggling with death? As we mourn the loss of loved ones, friends, parents, grandparents, we have a tendency to bow our heads. We might bow our heads in reverence of the life lost, from utter despair, perhaps even from guilt and shame over unresolved conflict. It is not uncommon for this to happen. In His human nature, before He breathed His last and gave up His spirit, even our Lord bowed His head. But the reading today, which is the Introit for tomorrow, Palm Sunday, turns the posture of death on its head! Although we bow our heads and mourn, especially this next week, as we remember that it was for our sins that our Lord went to the cross, the Psalmist David tells us to do the opposite! He says to us, “Lift up your heads…” (Psalm 24:7). Lift up your heads, for “Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he” (Zechariah 9:9). We must fix our focus outside of ourselves to see what happens. If, in our grief and shame, we look solely to ourselves for strength and comfort, we will be lost forever. Rather, strength, comfort, and salvation happen extra nos, that is, outside ourselves. In Christ, who has been lifted up for us on the cross of Calvary, death has been turned to life for His Children! Even our Lord, as He journeyed closer to His death, continued to lift His eyes to heaven! At the beginning of His high priestly prayer in John 17, it is written, “When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you.'” (John 17:1) In my church, we have the tradition that our midweek Lenten services always end with the same hymn, Abide with Me. The final stanza of that hymn will be the last thing we hear on Good Friday. We will sing: Hold, Thou, Thy cross before my closing eyes;Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies.Heav'n's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. What are we praying for in this stanza? We are praying that our Father would lift up our eyes, point them to the heavens, that we would see the Lord coming to us now, in the hour of our death, and on the Last Day. For in Him, the Lord of Life, we have our Salvation. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Hold, Thou, Thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies. Heav'n's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. (LSB 878:6)-Rev. Today in the Catholic Mass Series, we finish our discussion of Sacred Music in the Liturgy. There has long been tension between the creative and innovative developments of music with the need to regulate what is appropriate and fitting for use during the Holy Sacrifice. Does this mean that we need to only use music that has been composed centuries ago? What about some of the hymns that we have grown up with – are they appropriate? To answer these and other questions, we discuss what type of music is and is not proper during Mass. March 8, 2025Today's Reading: Introit for Lent 1 - Psalm 91:9-13; antiphon: Psalm 91:15-16Daily Lectionary: Genesis 3:1-24; Mark 2:1-17“He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:11)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Coming up tomorrow is the Temptation of Jesus. We will hear the devil tempt our Savior three times. In one of those temptations, Satan will quote Psalm 91, part of which will be the Introit tomorrow morning. He will argue that Jesus should throw Himself down because the Lord “will command His angels concerning you.” But the devil leaves out what the command will be, skipping forward to just the results. But the command is important. It is “to guard you in all your ways.” Stepping off of the pinnacle of the temple is the epitome of an unguarded way. But ways are more than just a footpath you might take your feet on. The ‘way' in which you live is also meant. That presents us with a problem and Satan with an opportunity. Because we sin. We fall short. We fail when faced with temptation. And for those few short moments where we thought, maybe, that we succeeded, the temptation grows only stronger the next time we face it. Then evil befalls us, and plagues come near our tents. But the devil accidentally points something out to us. This Psalm is about Jesus. Because it's Jesus who treads on the adder. It's Jesus who tramples the young serpent underfoot. Jesus crushes the devil's head, that ancient serpent, while Satan bruises His heel. Jesus' feet nailed to a cross. Crucified to overthrow the accusations of the accuser forever. In doing that, all those sins have been taken away. All those failed temptations have been forgiven. Jesus has become your way, and He's the one who keeps you on His path. He has forgiven you. He has given you repentance. He has given you hope. He has given you resurrection. He has given you eternal life. And now, when temptation's hour comes, you have an advocate. You have Jesus fighting by your side. You don't need to face these things alone. You have Christ, who has overcome your temptation already right here with you. And with Him He brings His Church. You have brothers and sisters in Christ who have also faced those temptations, fallen to those temptations, and have been likewise rescued by Christ. Do not forget their wisdom and experience, for they didn't get through it alone, either. Jesus Christ has overcome temptation for you. He has won life, forgiveness, and salvation for you. And He walks with you even now on your way.In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.O Christ, You walked the road Our wand'ring feet must go. Stay with us through temptation's hour To fight our ancient foe. Today in the Catholic Mass Series, we begin a new section examining the externals that surround the Mass, like vestments, the church building, and starting today, sacred music. From antiquity, music has been a part of worship. In fact, even false religions recognize the importance of music in their respective devotions and rites. Today in the first of two episodes on music and the Mass, we explore the history of music in sacred worship, starting with Jewish ceremonies and the Psalms, leading up to the present day. We also start to examine the various kinds of music in a sung Mass. February 22, 2025Today's Reading: Introit for Epiphany 7 - Psalm 37:1-5; antiphon: Psalm 37:7a, bDaily Lectionary: Job 17:1-16; John 7:14-31Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. (From the Introit for the Seventh Sunday After the Epiphany)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Tomorrow's Introit focuses on the heart of the Scripture texts appointed for the day. On the face of it, this looks like a “do A and God will do B” kind of text. But look more closely at the whole of the Introit. It begins with a reminder that evildoers and wrongdoers will fade and wither, but trusting in the Lord leads to peace. The rest of the psalm is like that, too. King David writes that our peace, our rest, our salvation, and our strength are all found in the Lord.In the Old Testament reading for tomorrow, Joseph has only love and compassion for his brothers, who once wanted him dead. In the Gospel, Jesus reminds his hearers to love their enemies and do good to those who hate them.So also with this psalm. Rest in the Lord. Trust in God alone. Don't seek to make your own way to salvation. Live as one who absolutely believes that Almighty God has your best interests at heart. He will care for you; he will sustain you.Oh, sure. Evil will still attack. You will still suffer the insults and lies of those who don't like you. You will feel terrible at times because of the work of Satan against you. But your ultimate fate has already been sealed in Jesus. That's what trust is: believing that you are safe, even if you can't exactly see that safety. Ever done a trust fall? You fall backward into the arms of friends, and they catch you. Or, at least, that is what is supposed to happen. You trust that when you fall, they will catch you.God your Father is the one who will always catch you when you fall. He is the one who will always hold you close. He is the one who will always search you out like the lost sheep and carry you to safety on his shoulders.Trust in, delight in, and commit yourself to him. He has already acted for you in Jesus' death and resurrection. Because you are marked with his blood, you are always safe in his hands. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Almighty and ever-living God, You make us both to will and to do those things that are good and acceptable in Your sight. Let Your fatherly hand ever guide us and Your Holy Spirit ever be with us to direct us in the knowledge and obedience of Your Word that we may obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. February 15, 2025Today's Reading: Introit for Epiphany 6 - Psalm 119:1-2, 4-5; antiphon: Psalm 119:7Daily Lectionary: Job 11:1-20; John 5:19-29Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart. (From the Introit for the Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. There is a difference between blessedness and happiness. Happiness is a fleeting emotion, while blessedness is a state of being given by God. You can start out as happy as can be, but then something will come along and ruin your day. Your happiness is now a memory.Blessedness, on the other hand, is something that doesn't come and go based on how your day plays out. It also doesn't depend on you, how you feel, or your behavior. Too many people want to hear this Introit say that IF you are blameless, and IF you walk in the law of the Lord, THEN you will be blessed. But there is a reason this part of Psalm 119 was chosen for tomorrow's Introit. Look at the Gospel reading from St. Luke 6. Jesus speaks the Beatitudes and not once says you are blessed because of your actions. It is all passive. You are declared blessed by God.So also with this psalm. The Word of God has had its way with you; it has reshaped you into God's child. You hear him calling you and teaching you, and you are glad to walk in his ways. He has made you a blesséd one. He has blessed you in your Baptism, and out of deep love and respect for what he has done for you, you are glad to seek him, to keep his testimonies, to be one who lives as he has called you to do because he has re-made you as his own child.Good or bad, happy or sad, nothing can change the fact that God your Father has declared you blessed because of Jesus. When your day goes badly, when you feel that things aren't working, remember these words of the psalmist and Jesus's words of truth. You are blessed by God. You are his child. You are safe in his hands, no matter what this world does to you.In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.O holy and most merciful God, You have taught us the way of Your commandments. We implore You to pour out Your grace into our hearts. Cause it to bear fruit in us that, being ever mindful of Your mercies and Your laws, we may always be directed to Your will and daily increase in love toward You and one another. Enable us to resist all evil and to live a godly life. Help us to follow the example of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and to walk in His steps until we shall possess the kingdom that has been prepared for us in heaven; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Another question about SSPX. Meaning of Psalm 36.30, Introit of Mass for Confessor: "Mouth shall meditate"? Francis' Synodal Church: Tower of Babel and Whore of Babylon? Francis blasts Trump deportations as "disgrace". Dangers of executive orders? Dysfunctional state of America: tyranny? Only true faith in Christ can save America. We are continuing the section of the podcast series that proceeds step by step through the Mass to look at the various sections and rubrics of the liturgy. In this week's episode, we focus on the section from the Introit up to the Collect. These prayers and the symbolism of the liturgical gestures have a deep history, which is apparent when we open our hand Missals to see phrases like “The Mass of the Catechumens” and “Stational Churches.” What do these terms mean? 2024's THINGS OF THE YEAR: Reflecting on the 2024 that was, our hosts pick what defined the year for them. For Andrew, it's how Star Trek: Lower Decks brought its excellent run to a close while D. This episode Dr. Jenkins begins looking at Orthodox Monasticism and the question of the search and pursuit of God.
From our Introit in the Mass this day, "Let the earth open and bring forth a Savior. O Lord, raise up, we pray Thee Thy power, and with great might succor us." That word succor means this, "Lord, come with your strength to aid we who are so weak and in need. Come and help us." The Prophet Isaiah in chapter 40 says that this help and strength comes to those who wait upon the Lord. But what does it mean to wait upon the Lord? It does not mean that, in time, we wait for a God who is distant from our moments to come from afar to us to help us. It means, that He has already joined Himself to us and His strength is ever-present.

November 2, 2024Today's Reading: Introit for Pentecost 24 - Psalm 89:1-4; antiphon: Psalm 9:1Daily Lectionary: Jeremiah 1:1-19; Matthew 21:23-46I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all Your wonderful deeds. (Psalm 9:1)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. The story is told of a woman wanting to look her best for her daughter's wedding. “Don't worry, ma'am,” said the hairdresser, “I'll do you justice.” “Justice!” cried the lady. “I don't need justice! I need mercy!”An Old Testament prophet cries out to God that in wrath He would remember mercy (Habakkuk 3:2). That mercy is the “steadfast love” the psalmist is singing about in tomorrow's Introit. “I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever (89:1).”It is “the steadfast love of the Lord” that sent Jesus to the cross for you to suffer and die for your sins. It is “the steadfast love of the Lord” that sends Jesus in your Baptism to keep the promise of His cross a present reality in the face of all your sins today. It is “the steadfast love of the Lord” that sends Jesus in the absolutions and sermons you hear from your pastor. And it is “the steadfast love of the Lord” that sends Jesus with the bread and wine at Holy Communion tomorrow, “for you, for the forgiveness of sins.”After all, God made a covenant with His “chosen one,” with “David my servant,” that He would “establish” his “offspring forever,” and “build” his “throne for all generations” (Psalm 89:3-4). That is what will be happening in tomorrow's Divine Service. For that Offspring is Jesus, and that throne is God's throne of grace. God is fulfilling His covenant with David, establishing Jesus, David's Son and David's Lord, forever on David's throne. That is good news for all of us because God knows our sins. He knows the dreaded fear we have because of our sins. But tomorrow, because of Jesus, God will be calling us to a lively trust, a joyful confidence in His steadfast love for all sinners. Because the justice God will promise tomorrow is the mercy He promised and accomplished for you the first time He sent Jesus. And it will be the same “steadfast love” the Lord sends and accomplishes for you when He sends Jesus on the Last Day.“The steadfast love of the Lord” “will be built up forever.” Thank God, because that means salvation for all of us. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Let children hear the mighty deeds Which God performed of old, Which in our younger days we saw, And which our parents told. So make to them His glories known, His works of pow'r and grace; And we'll convey His wonders down Through ev'ry rising race. (LSB 867:1, 2)-Rev. October 26, 2024 Today's Reading: Introit for Pentecost 23 - Psalm 131; antiphon: Psalm 130:1-2Daily Lectionary: Deuteronomy 28:1-22; Matthew 18:1-20O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy! (Psalm 130:1-2)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Psalm 130 (all eight verses, not just the two from which the antiphon for tomorrow's Introit is derived) is popular at funerals. It's a psalm that pastors often pray out loud as the procession moves from the hearse to the graveside. There was a country song released recently called “I Wish Grandpas Never Died.” I wish that, too. Most painful of all, though, is when a child dies. Why would God allow something like that to happen? Psalm 131 (tomorrow's Introit) gives us wise counsel. “O LORD, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me” (verse 1). Like a weaned child trusting its mother, the psalmist then cries out, “O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time forth and forevermore” (verse 3).There are many things in life we will never understand, and the death of a child is certainly one of them. But whether we understand something or not, it is always good to “trust in the LORD.” Why? Because with the LORD “there is mercy, and with Him is abundant redemption” (Psalm 130:7). In His Word, God has revealed to us that He did not put Jesus on the cross only to leave us at the mercy of things we don't understand in this life. He put Jesus on the cross for you and me so that the only hands we are at the mercy of now in this life and the next are His. That's a good place to be because those hands were nailed to the cross for you and me to save us from all our sins.Along with tomorrow's psalmist, we, too, can “wait for the LORD.” For in His own timing, perhaps not until eternity, He will make it clear to us how He was always present, always good and merciful in all He sent or allowed in this life. In “the depths,” that seems impossible to believe. But the promise of your Baptism, the forgiveness you will hear from your pastor tomorrow, and the redemption you will receive in Communion all promise you that the Lord's got this. The Lord's got you. And there is nothing at all to fear. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, Let this blest assurance control, That Christ has regarded my helpless estate And hath shed His own Blood for my soul. It is well with my soul, It is well, it is well with my soul. (LSB 763:2)-Rev.
