In GBA 346 we get better acquainted with Matt. I visit him at his new venture, Alt-Space, in Morcambe and we talk about how he washed up in this North West seaside town, how the lack of a comedy club in the town inspired him to create an arts venue, community centre and a fringe there, his own work which spans spoken word, theatre and comedy, and lots more. Comedy Awards at the Edinburgh Fringe. Before the 2016 Edinburgh Comedy Awards were announced, amid a noisy crowd in Assembly, a tired and emotional Kate Copstick and John Fleming babble and discuss comedy at the Fringe and how the Malcolm Hardee Comedy Awards winners were decided… Plus the brilliance of Richard Gadd and Phil Ellis, the million-pound baby, Becky Fury, Phil Jarvis, Peter Buckley Hill and the sexual allure of the Pillsbury Doughboy… And how Copstick, initially with nausea and diarrhoea, was recognised as “the anti-Christ of the Fringe”. http://www.grouchyclub.co.uk You can also download this audio podcast from iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/grouchy-clubs-mostly-about/id977279883 John Fleming posts occasional blogs at: http://blog.thejohnfleming.com
The end of the comedy section in Time Out. The end of John Fleming’s daily blog. The last live Grouchy Club. Nina Conti to join porn film set. Will and/or Sarah Franken to teach satire. Kate Copstick to consider teaching aggression in a Scottish accent. John Fleming to consult on comedy. Peter Buckley Hill contemplates an award. More chaos at the Edinburgh Fringe. The dead owners of Cowgatehead. Plus Lewis Schaffer, Juliette Burton, Bob Slayer, Mark Watson… and it all ends in an orgasm from Copstick. www.grouchyclub.co.uk You can also download this audio podcast from iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/grouchy-clubs-mostly-about/id977279883 John Fleming’s daily blog is at: http://blog.thejohnfleming.com
It's been a while since the last podcast, and with good reason. We've all been beavering away throughout August running Skeptics on the Fringe, our contribution to the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival. 22 nights, 22 separate events, featuring scientific and skeptical talks, some comedy, some music, and even some poetry. And the best bit is that we recorded a bunch of it for you, and we even interviewed some of our speakers and performers as well! This is episode zero and as well as an overview of what to expect over the coming months, we also have a performance by Peter Buckley Hill as part of our July Fringe Fundraiser event. Peter is the founder of the PBH Free Fringe, one of the many organisations putting on events during the Fringe, and home to Skeptics on the Fringe. Peter very kindly gave his time to help us out for our fundraiser, although we must warn you that he's also very loud and energetic and you may wish to turn your speakers down a bit... :-) Episode zero seemed like the best name for this episode, given that it's an introduction and also that nobody uses the number zero enough. Is it even a number? Oh well, too late now...

In GBA 123 we get better acquainted with Daniel Simpson. He talks about his experience trying to bring Ibiza to the Balkans in a story that involves being a journalist for the New York Times, drug smuggling, the Serbian mafia, Sonic Youth, and the conflict between idealism and egotism. We also get into both the wider politics that frame this story (the media, the Balkans, The War on Terror, The War on Drugs, Western Foreign Policy) and what he learnt personally about himself from his terrible experiences.
