We also touch on nasal breathing and why it's so helpful for our overall health. The main thing to take from this conversation is that even the smallest amount of movement is better than nothing. We really hope you'll find something useful in here.Love,Polly & Lucy xDownload 15 Breaths to Calm Anxiety - a FREE 5 minute audio to calm you down in real time. I'm continuing our series on how to build a more regulated nervous system. We've already explored Stage One: Awareness — learning to notice when your nervous system is calm, when stress is creeping in, and when you've tipped into that more activated state of anxiety or overwhelm. In this week's episode episode, I'm guiding you through Stage Two: Regulation & How to Come Back To Calm — the practical ways you can bring your nervous system back to calm once you notice it's been activated. Because stress, pressure and emotional ups and downs are part of being human. The real skill isn't avoiding stress altogether, but learning how to guide yourself back to a steadier, calmer state.I'll walk you through several simple body-based “portals” that help your nervous system shift from stress back into safety — tools you can begin using straight away in everyday life.In this episode I share:Why we often can't think our way out of stress — and why the body needs to feel safe firstHow the brain and body communicate through the nervous system, including the 80/20 body-to-brain signal pathwayFive simple “portals” into nervous system regulationHow your everyday breathing habits influence your nervous system throughout the dayWhy developing body awareness helps you notice stress earlier and respond before overwhelm buildsTo find out more about how your breathing may be affecting your nervous system, download for FREE The Breath Check up. In this episode of Take a Breath, I'm joined by Wendy Heine — certified Wim Hof instructor, breathwork coach and yoga teacher.Wendy shares her journey from avoiding the cold completely to embracing it as a powerful tool for healing, particularly following her cancer diagnosis in 2021.We explore both the science and the nervous system side of cold exposure — what's actually happening in the body, why it can lift mood and energy so quickly, and how breathwork completely changes your experience of stepping into discomfort. This isn't about bravado. It's not about forcing yourself into freezing water. It's about intention, regulation, and building resilience in a calm, grounded way.Inside this conversation, we explore:Why cold water can lift mood, sharpen focus and boost energyHow long is long enough to trigger the key physiological benefitsWhat “cold enough” really means (and why it doesn't need to be extreme)How to use your breath to stay calm and in controlWhy cold exposure is a form of positive stress that can strengthen both body and mind when approached safelyIf you've been curious about cold showers or sea dips but feel hesitant, this episode will help you understand how to approach it in a way that feels empowering rather than overwhelming. It's about learning to stay steady — even when things feel uncomfortable — and taking that steadiness back into everyday life.To connect with Wendy, go to: https://www.instagram.com/longevitylifestylecoach/Download 15 Breaths to Calm Anxiety - a FREE 5 minute audio to calm you down in real time. In this episode of Take a Breath, I'm sharing why awareness is always the first step in nervous system regulation — and why, without it, even the best tools and techniques won't truly stick. So many of us are living on autopilot, reacting before we even realise we're reacting. I know this deeply, because that was me for most of my life. In this episode, I gently unpack how awareness takes us out of automatic mode, creates space, and gives us back choice — without forcing, fixing, or judging ourselves. This is a foundational episode if you want to feel calmer, more grounded, and less hijacked by your reactions in everyday life.In this episode, you'll learn:Why awareness always comes before breathwork, tools, or techniques when it comes to regulating your nervous systemWhat awareness actually looks like in real life (and what it isn't)How awareness creates “the gap” between feeling and reacting — and why that gap is where regulation beginsHow simply noticing and pausing can begin to rewire your nervous system through neuroplasticityHow to start making awareness more natural and automatic in daily lifeIf you've ever thought, “I know I'm overreacting but I can't seem to stop,” this episode will help you understand why — and, more importantly, offer a much gentler way forward.Download 15 Breaths to Calm Anxiety - a FREE 5 minute audio to calm you down in real time. On this week's Thursday Thoughts, Lucy and I are talking about breaking the cycle of negativity. We explore how easy it is to get caught in those negative spirals where one thought leads to another and suddenly we're knee-deep in a full-on wallow, feeling pretty rubbish about everything. We chat about how the way we feel most of the time becomes the energy we're putting out into the world — and how that energy attracts more of the same right back to us.We also share some of the practical things we both use to gently interrupt a negative spiral and shift our state when we notice ourselves heading down that familiar path.We hope that you enjoy this conversation.Love, Polly & Lucy xDownload 15 Breaths to Calm Anxiety - a FREE 5 minute audio to calm you down in real time. This week on Take a Breath, I'm joined by brilliant Kate Codrington — author, therapist, facilitator, speaker, and guide for women navigating the menopause transition.Kate is the author of Second Spring, named one of the seven best books on menopause by the New York Times, and The Perimenopause Journal (2024), described as “an essential resource” by leading endocrinologist Professor Annice Mukherjee. With over 30 years' experience as a therapist, Kate brings psychological depth, nervous system wisdom, and compassion to the conversation around midlife. In this episode of Take a Breath, we explore menopause not as something to push through or “fix,” but as a natural rite of passage. A threshold. A season rich with meaning, creativity, and the potential for profound self-discovery.If you've been feeling unsettled, wired, more emotional than usual, or unsure of who you're becoming, this conversation offers context and reassurance.Together, we explore:Why menopause is both a physical and psychological transition — and how it mirrors the seasons of nature and your inner lifeThe three phases of midlife: separation, surrender, and emergence — and how understanding them can reduce fear and self-doubtWhy rest is not indulgent, but a necessary nervous system reset for chronically busy, overstimulated womenHow Yoga Nidra and deep rest practices create safety, restoration, and deep repair Why midlife is an invitation to reclaim your inner authority, creative fertility, and self-trust — rather than trying to be who you once wereKate's voice is calm, grounded, and deeply validating. This episode offers permission to slow down, let go of what no longer fits, and trust the wisdom of this season — even when it feels messy.Download 15 Breaths to Calm Anxiety - a FREE 5 minute audio to calm you down in real time. On this week's Thursday's Thoughts, Lucy and I are talking all about the patriarchy. This social system that historically centres white men as the default holders of power, money, status and authority, is woven into the very fabric of society. It shows up in a million subtle - and not so subtle - ways: women playing small because they've been taught to be pleasing, quiet, polite and accommodating; women taking on the ‘invisible load' of housework and kid-min; women being put down at work or at home because of the inherent and subconscious belief that men are somehow superior. In this conversation, Lucy and I talk about how the patriarchy has shown up in our own lives, as well as how things are so much worse for women in other countries and cultures. And this is exactly why women need to start speaking up and standing up for both themselves, and the many, many women who are less fortunate than those of us in western cultures. We hope you'll find something interesting in here.Love,Polly & Lucy xDownload 15 Breaths to Calm Anxiety - a FREE 5 minute audio to calm you down in real time. There's a lot of noise right now about calming your nervous system and staying regulated — and for many of us, that creates more pressure than peace. In this solo episode, I gently unpack what nervous system regulation actually means, why staying calm isn't the goal, and how midlife and perimenopause can shift the way your system responds to stress.I also introduce a simple metaphor to help you understand what's really going on inside your body — and why so many of us feel stuck, reactive, or exhausted without knowing why. This episode is an invitation to pause, notice, and begin to understand what your nervous system has been trying to tell you.In this episode, we explore:How to recognise the signs of coping vs. true regulationWhy stress isn't the enemyHow your nervous system responds to everyday lifeA powerful metaphor to help you notice what state you're inWhat starts to shift when you can name it, instead of judge itDownload 15 Breaths to Calm Anxiety - a FREE 5 minute audio to calm you down in real time. On this week's Thursday's Thoughts, Lucy and I talk about what it really means to shift out of the background and into the lead role of your own life.We chat about how easy it is, especially for women, to unconsciously slip into a supporting role, putting everyone else's needs first, waiting for the “right time,” or playing small out of habit rather than intention. We explore how being the main character doesn't mean being loud or dramatic. It simply means taking up space in your own life. And it doesn't require a big, sweeping change — sometimes it's just one small moment where you back yourself and remember that you're allowed to take the lead and want more.We hope you find something useful in here.Love,Polly & Lucy xxDownload 15 Breaths to Calm Anxiety - a FREE 5 minute audio to calm you down in real time. Midlife can be a season of subtle (or not-so-subtle) shifts. The things that once felt like a perfect fit — a role, a path, a version of you — start to feel off. On today's Thursday Thoughts, Lucy and I are talking about the power of intentionally tuning into nature during crazy times. Most of us would agree that the state of the world right now is…alot. It can feel overwhelming and scary, to say the least, and it's easy to feel completely out of control. One of the best ways to put things into perspective - not to mention regulate our overstimulated nervous systems - is to remember that we are a part of something much, much greater than ourselves.Sometimes a walk in nature is all we need to feel calmer; a cuddle with our cat can bring us back to joy; and noticing the beauty of the flowers or the birds can make us feel more grounded. So if you're feeling upset, scared, or horrified by what's happening in the world, one of the best things you can do is surround yourself with nature - whether that's a walk along the coast, or just popping into your local city park.We sincerely hope you'll find something helpful or interesting in here.Love,Polly & Lucy xDownload 15 Breaths to Calm Anxiety - a FREE 5 minute audio to calm you down in real time. Many of us rely on pressure and guilt to keep ourselves moving forwards towards our goals — especially in midlife, when life can feel full and demanding. While these strategies may work in the short term, they often leave us feeling exhausted, anxious, and disconnected from ourselves. In this episode, I explore why guilt and pressure have become such familiar motivators, how they impact the nervous system, and what it really takes to move forward from a place of calm rather than self-attack. Drawing on my own experience and simple, science-backed tools, I share a kinder, more sustainable way to stay productive without burning out.In this episode, you'll learn:Why pressure and guilt feel motivating — and the hidden cost of relying on themHow the push–collapse–guilt cycle keeps you stuckSimple ways to interrupt reactive patterns How to upgrade unhelpful beliefs without forcing positivityHow to approach ambition from a place of calm and choiceDownload 15 Breaths to Calm Anxiety - a FREE 5 minute audio to calm you down in real time. Scientists in the Arctic are catching the exhaled breaths of whales to better understand their health. How? Drones. Whales breathe through their blowholes, which are the equivalent of nostrils on their heads. By studying the microbes in exhaled whale breaths, scientists are piecing together how deadly diseases spread in whale populations. Host Emily Kwong and producer Berly McCoy talk to All Things Considered host Juana Summers about what scientists can do with this information, from reducing stress on whales and monitoring ocean health to warning people who could be in close proximity to whales carrying zoonotic diseases. What if narrowing your attention could make your daily life feel wider, calmer, and more vivid? We dive into the practical craft of concentration and show how a single, steady focus becomes the quiet engine behind reliable mindfulness. Rather than forcing the mind, we build a friendly runway—gladdening the mind with gratitude and warmth—so attention settles without strain and the nervous system knows it is safe to rest.We walk through concrete anchors that meet different temperaments: counting exhales in simple cycles, sensing breath at the belly or nostrils, receiving whatever sound arrives, or repeating short phrases of loving kindness. You'll hear why long stretches of silence matter during counting, how to restart at one without self-judgment, and what “relaxed steadiness” feels like when you're doing it right. Along the way, we unpack clear metaphors: the adjustable flashlight that moves from wide-open awareness to a narrow beam, the body scan as a midpoint on the spectrum, and breath mindfulness as a flexible practice that can widen for strong emotions before returning to the anchor.By the end, you'll understand when to choose pure concentration, when to lean into broader mindfulness, and how both interlock to create durable presence. Expect grounded tips on posture, effort, and self-talk, plus a compassionate take on distraction that turns each lapse into a cue to return. If you've struggled to keep attention from slipping, this conversation offers a simple blueprint you can use today to stabilize focus and carry that clarity into work, relationships, and rest.If this resonates, follow the show, share it with a friend who's building a practice, and leave a quick review—tell us which anchor worked best for you and why.Support the showCoupon code and the link are down below, but that will expire shortlyFeel free to text me at 415-939-1126 Certify To Teach Mindfulness & Meditation Since 2015, we've trained over 2,000 people to teach mindfulness in healthcare, business, education, yoga, sports teams, and the U.S. Government. Breaths — they're natural, emotional, and sometimes downright necessary. But should they always stay in your voice tracks? This week, the crew dives into the great de-breathing debate, inspired by a post from voice actor Toby Ricketts on how breaths act as "unseen punctuation." Robbo, AP, George the Tech, and Robert Marshall discuss when removing them improves clarity and when it strips away the performance. Along the way, they touch on AI voices, happy accidents, and the fine art of keeping things human — from Sting's laugh on Roxanne to Chad Smith breaking a drumstick mid-take. They also chat about Austrian Audio's new CC8 Supercardioid — a small-diaphragm beauty George currently has in front of him. Is it time to stop editing the life out of your sound? Tune in and take a breath.
Let us know what you enjoy about the show! The world rarely gives you a quiet minute, so we made one. This guided micro meditation helps you step out of noise and back into yourself without leaving your chair, your car, or your to‑do list. No special setup, no perfect posture—just your breath, a softer body, and the pause that's already there. We start by noticing the breath exactly as it is, then invite a gentle inhale through the nose and a slow exhale through the mouth. As shoulders melt and the jaw releases, the nervous system begins to settle. From there, we explore the stillness at the top of your inhale and the bottom of your exhale—the tiny spaces where nothing is required and everything feels possible. That pause becomes a felt sense of presence, a reminder that peace isn't earned after the work is done; it's available now and can travel with you into whatever comes next. This short practice is perfect between meetings, before sleep, or anytime stress ramps up and attention frays. You'll learn how to use physical cues to calm the mind, how awareness of breath pauses builds resilience, and how a one‑minute reset can shift your entire day. Whether you're new to meditation or returning to it, this session offers a simple, repeatable way to get grounded and stay open to possibility.Press play, breathe with us, and let the quiet do its work. If this helped you reset, follow the show, share it with someone who needs a pause, and leave a review so more people can find their breath again.Support the show
Thich Nhat Hanh: Breaths of Peace In this episode, we celebrate the life of Thich Nhat Hanh (Thay)—Zen monk, poet, peace activist, and pioneer of Engaged Buddhism. We reflect on how mindfulness and action can be the same gesture, how every step can carry peace, and how breath can anchor us when the world is loud. Ageless Athlete - Fireside Chats with Adventure Sports Icons
What does it take to climb into the unknown — when you can't see the way forward?Erik Weihenmayer is one of the most accomplished adventure athletes of our time. The first blind person to summit Mount Everest, he has since climbed the Seven Summits, led expeditions around the world, and kayaked the full 277 miles of the Grand Canyon. Now 56, Erik continues to seek awe and discomfort — from the storm-battered granite towers of the Bugaboos to the whitewater chaos of the Colorado River. But this episode isn't about past headlines. It's about fire. About why Erik calls the outdoors “the greatest laboratory for learning.” About how aging reshapes goals without dimming curiosity. About the difference between fear that paralyzes and fear that sharpens. And about the daily experiments in trust, grit, and reinvention that make a life feel ageless. If you've ever felt like your best adventures are behind you, Erik's story is a reminder: the summit isn't a peak on a map. It's the choice to keep moving into uncertainty, one step, one breath at a time.In This Episode:What the Bugaboos taught Erik about patience, fire, and partnershipFrom hating hiking as a teen to discovering the outdoors as a lifelong teacherHow he climbs by feel and trust — and the most intense “unknown” he's faced on a wallThe reality of kayaking blind through Class V rapids in the Grand CanyonHow aging has shifted his goals and risk calculus at 56Life outside the mountains: family, home, and the small rituals that keep him groundedWhat fulfillment means now: summits vs. unlocking others' potentialWhy “No Barriers” is more than a slogan — it's a mindset for every season of lifeReferences & ResourcesErik's book: No Barriers: A Blind Man's Journey to Kayak the Grand Canyon — Amazon linkErik's organization: No Barriers USAErik's website: erikweihenmayer.com---

In this episode of the Endless Metal podcast, Markisan conducts a solo interview with Jason Roberts, the man behind the expansive doomgaze project Breaths. This is a companion piece to Jason's previous appearance on Markisan's main gig on the Metalheads Podcast. On episode 152, the metalheads go deep into Jason's musical development and the origin story of Breaths as well as a discussion about last year's stunning self-titled album. Here, Markisan and Jason talk about Breaths latest record, “Death Can Wait.” In the first half of this episode, they go deep into the writing and recording process of the album—a truly stunning work that finds Breaths spunding darker and heavier but still retaining the melodic atmospheric, indeed, oxygenated “breathy” beauty of last year's release. As huge fans of nineties music, Markisan and Jason wax about this formative decade in their lives. Presenting a fitting top 10 count down of their all-time favorite records of the 1990s, they come to a deeper appreciation of the bands they grew up loving—metal, pop, hardcore, or otherwise. So kick back and blast a classic 90s records by Tool, Hum, The Gathering, Earth Crisis, Sepultura, etc. and crack open a classic 90s brew (released in ‘89), Full Sail Amber ale!

Here we are: Summer has arrived, but you're wondering ... "Why don't I feel fantastic all the time?"Instead of feeling excitement for the summer months that you held as a child, you're feeling the heat - physically, mentally, and emotionally.Well, ladies, Ayurveda to the rescue!Today, on Episode 159 of the Habit Thrive Podcast, we're fighting that summer heat. We're thinking cooling, hydrating and light. We're managing our social media and news time by letting less in.We're letting go of the intense, hot workouts in favor of cooling swims or meditations. And we're practicing 2 cooling breaths. For Sheetali Breathing:Roll your tongue like a taco (or gently open your lips and breathe in through your teeth if that's more your style - or you're in public). Inhale cool air slowly. Exhale through your nose.Try this for 5–7 rounds. It truly feels like peppermint for your nervous system! For Left Nostril Breathing (Chandra Bhedana):Cover your right nostril by applying light pressure with your finger or thumb. Inhale and exhale through the left nostril. This technique is not only cooling, but super calming. It's great before bed or after a heated convo (or a heated workout). You might be wondering: Why do these breathing techniques work?Because your breath controls your inner thermostat. When you cool your breath, your nervous system gets the memo that you're safe, calm, and not on fire.Take a breath, take a break, give yourself some grace, and enjoy the summer vibes!Love,Lorrie xoxoxOn this Episode:Take the Dosha QuizLoving the show?
