So it was a real pleasure to invite CEIP's Stewart Patrick back into the Virtual Studio to talk about this critical UN Summit – the Summit of the Future (SoTF). This Summit will take place this year on September 22nd -23rd. The effort leading to this Summit began with the 75th UN anniversary and the call for the Secretary General (SG) to prepare recommendations for the future. And he in turn prepared the Report - “Our Common Agenda” among many recommendations the SG proposed a Summit of the Future (SoTF). The General Assembly then decided that the SoTF would take place in September 2024, building on the earlier Sustainable Development Goals summit in September 20203 – the ‘SDG Summit'. The outcome envisioned for the SoTF would be an intergovernmentally negotiated, action-oriented ‘Pact for the Future'. Stewart Patrick is senior fellow and director of the Global Order and Institutions Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP). His primary areas of research focus are the shifting foundations of world order, the future of American internationalism, and the requirements for effective multilateral cooperation on transnational challenges. Stewart is an expert in the history and practice of multilateralism, He is the author of three books, including: The Sovereignty Wars: Reconciling America with the World; Weak Links: Fragile States, Global Threats, and International Security; and The Best Laid Plans: The Origins of American Multilateralism and the Dawn of the Cold War. He has authored many articles, essays, chapters, and reports on problems of world order, U.S. global engagement, the United Nations and other international organizations, and the management of global issues.

Control. Think. Execute. Today is the anniversary of the D.C. Cherry Road Townhouse Fire of 99', and our guest is Lieutenant Joe Morgan. On May 30, 1999, firefighters responded to a box alarm involving a townhouse fire. The initial report came in as a house fire, and it was later reported that the fire was in the basement (all firefighters did not receive the follow-up report of fire in the basement). Engine 26 (lieutenant and 3 firefighters) was the first to arrive on the scene and reported smoke showing on the front of a row of townhouses. The event quickly went from bad to worse as the firefighters entered the building. Many lessons were learned at this tragic event and today Lieutenant Joe Morgan shares his experience and journey as he walks us through that day. More: https://sonsoftheflag.org/

In April 2003 in Iraq, Kim "Killer Chick" Campbell flew a mission that defied logic and common sense. Responding to a call for help from a ground force about to be overrun, KC risked her own life to save them. The enemy always gets a vote, and then Captain Campbell's A-10 was almost shot down. With no hydraulics, in a plane that shouldn't have been able to fly, KC did what only 2 or 3 other pilots have lived through- she flew her A-10 back to friendly control in manual reversion. For her actions that day, she was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Colonel Campbell was kind enough to talk about her amazing career- from becoming the first father/daughter Cadet Wing Commander pair at the United States Air Force Academy, to pilot training, to becoming an A-10 pilot, to her current passion project, the Special Operations Transition Foundation. Her dedication to service continues to this day- and we can now add "Best Selling Author" to her list of remarkable accolades. Today, we are excited to have a very special guest, on for what was our Veterans Day, and hear the incredible story of Captain George Burk! George Burk, keynote speaker, trainer, author, Vietnam veteran and sought after speaker inspires and motivates people wherever he speaks. In 1970, George was the sole survivor of 14 passengers in a military plane crash. He suffered burns over 65% of his body and multiple internal injuries. For over nine months after leaving intensive care, he was paralyzed and not expected to walk again. While in the ICU, he had two Near-Death Experiences (NDE's). He saw the bridge, saw the door, and saw the light. He believes we all have guardian angels. George says, "If you expect a difference, make one and if you want a miracle, be one." His belief in God and messages of faith, hope, perseverance, commitment and to never give-up inspires and challenges audiences to be all they can be. In the second half of my conversation with Tom we get into the nitty-gritty of the natural world influencing art, the value of going out and being alone in the wilderness, and how that experience should be framed for greater results. This portion of the conversation references the first half fairly often, so if you haven't listened to the first half I recommend doing that first. This conversation touched on a lot of topics that are important to SOTF's educational philosophy and it was an absolute pleasure to talk with Tom about his plans for future wilderness fast programs he'll be running. On today's episode, our badass guest is Zachary Sutterfield, a young burn survivor doing incredible things to change lives and save others. To find out more about Zach viist @ZacharyRecovery on Facebook. Zach is a 21 year-old student, son, brother and friend who is fighting to live what he calls his best life after a fire drastically changed the life he knew. In the early morning hours on July 20, 2018, Zach was asleep in the Iconic Village Apartments when the apartment complex was set on fire. Zach and his two friends, Haley Frizzell and David Ortiz, fled from the apartment. David ran one way, Haley ran the other, and Zach jumped from the second story. The paramedics later said they had never seen anyone that burned before…alive, and they truly did not expect him to live. He was immediately flown to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, where he was treated for third degree burns on 70% of his body and a traumatic brain injury. He was given a 20% chance to live that increased to 50% as he kept making it through the days that followed. Zach is a miracle. His heart is full of fight and positivity as his learns to navigate his new life that he dedicates to the friends he lost. Of course his new life, or “best life” as he calls it, is still an uphill battle full of surgeries and rehab. Zach has currently had 24 surgeries with more to come, his TBI is still trying to heal itself, he has worked on loving what he sees in the mirror, and is adjusting to the challenges of his new body. However, the challenges he faces every day are not the only battles he fights. One of the most difficult parts about this awful tragdey is not having justice. The fire was ruled arson and the party responsible has not been found. Five people died on July 20th and Zach will forever have to navigate his new “best life” differently. https://sonsoftheflag.org/
