US equity futures are indicating a mostly flat open as of 04:45 ET. This follows higher markets in Asia, while European equity markets are also higher. Equity markets are benefiting from no further escalation in Middle Eastern tensions. Some thoughts are the recent sell-off is more technical than fundamental. There is also ongoing focus on the Fed outlook, with a reduction in rate cut expectations remaining a talking point. Companies mentioned: JD Sports Fashion, Hibbett, Novartis, SAP

Hibbett, Inc Falls Flat On Strong Results Hibbett Sports (NASDAQ: HIBB) reported a strong Q3 but strength is in the eye of the beholder. The company's robust growth and outlook for the year is strong for investors but not so much for the analysts who had been expecting so much more. The takeaway is that strength in the market is ebbing despite the performance and the weakness could spill over into other names as well. Dick's Sporting Goods (NYSE: DKS) and Foot Locker (NYSE: FL) reported much better quarters and gave better guidance but that doesn't mean consumers will agree. So far, the 2022 holiday shopping season hasn't been that impressive. The opportunity is that Hibbett Sports is still growing, it is still producing solid cash flow, paying its dividend and buying back shares while trading at less than 7X its earnings. With shares pulling back from recent highs the question of when to start buying the stock come to the fore. Hibbett Sports Fails To Impress With Strong Results Hibbett Sports had a good quarter in which it was able to grow revenue and earnings by double digits. The $433.16 million in revenue is up 13.5% over last year's 15% gain driven by comp store traffic and eCommerce. Comp-store sales are up 9.9%, nearly 52% versus 2019, while eCommerce is up a stronger 22%. The bad news is that earnings missed the Marketbeat.com consensus estimate by 300 basis points and there is more bad news to come. The company's margins are coming under pressure and pricing actions are not able to keep up. The company's gross margin fell by 240 basis points and was offset only slightly by leverage-related savings. The SG&A expenses declined as a percentage of sales but not enough to offset the decline in the gross margin which left the earnings well below the consensus estimates as well. The $1.94 in GAAP EPS is up 15% from last year's $1.68 but it missed the consensus by more than $0.50 which is what traders care about. Turning to the guidance, the news gets better but you have to take it on faith. The company reiterated its full-year fiscal 2023 guidance which implies quite a strong quarter in Q4. Taken at face value, the company is expecting $9.75 in GAAP earnings at the low end of its range which compares well to the consensus of $9.80. The part you have to take on faith is that earnings will top $3.00 in Q4 which may be asking a lot. $3.00 in quarterly EPS isn't the company's strongest quarter in history but it's close and this time around there isn't any stimulus money to help out. And there is the inventory position to worry about as well. Inventory is up 54% YOY and 83$ YTD which has it in a precarious position relative to co

From the Simplr studios in San Francisco, this is your daily briefing. IntroductionThis is Today in Five, for today, Friday, December 20th, Here’s today’s headlines in digital disruption. There’s a lot of buzz around digitally-native brands, but while direct-to-consumer brands struggle to reach profitability, private labels are thriving.First, here’s what’s making headlines. Hibbett Sports Gets New CEOFormer CEO of City Gear will be stepping into the CEO role at Hibbett Sports. He’ll be replacing Jeff Rosenthal, who announced his plans for retirement earlier this year. According to the chairman at Hibbett Sports, they believe that their newly appointed CEO is uniquely qualified to help strengthen Hibbett’s leadership position in both the customer experience and the active footwear and apparel industry.Secondhand Market Growing RapidlyThe secondhand market is growing rapidly thanks to players like The RealReal, ThredUp, and Poshmark and is showing no signs of slowing down. The growth comes at a time when younger consumers are increasingly concerned about sustainability. Fueled by millennials and Gen Z, the secondhand market is on track to more than double over the next five years, from $24 billion dollars to $51 billion dollars, according to ThredUp. Influencer Activity on Instagram SurgedInfluencer marketing activity on Instagram surged this year as more brands partner with influencers to reach younger consumers. The number of posts with the #ad hashtag indicating an Instagram post is sponsored has risen 48 percent to more than 3 million this year. Millennials dominated influencer marketing, with more than half of influencer content created by people between the ages of 25 to 34, while only 34 percent of the app’s user base is in that age group. Digitally-Native Brands Struggle While Private Labels ThriveThere’s a lot of buzz around digitally-native brands and their disruption of traditional retail. But an in-depth look at Bonobos and Walmart’s strategy banking on digitally-native brands reveals some cracks. Bonobos was the most well-known brand that started online and sold direct-to-consumer. With Andy Dunn at the helm, the company built its reputation as the pioneer in the consumer space. But, like any trailblazing company, Bonobos made mistakes along the way. It built its own e-commerce and logistics infrastructure, at a significant cost, and raised an immense amount of money to do so, nearly $130 million dollars over six years. It sold to Walmart for $310 million dollars, just over its previous private round valuation and for about two times revenue. Walmart since snapped up Jet.com, Moosejaw, ModCloth, Bare Necessities, and more, in hopes to compete with Amazon through digitally-native brands. However, the strategy hasn’t paid off and it is currently phasing out Jet.com, sold ModCloth to an investment firm, and it’s reported that Bonobos still remains unprofitable. Walmart has since said it plans to incubate its own private label brands as they shift strategies. The speed at which unprofitable digitally-native brands have grown starkly contrasts that of private labels, with companies like Target and Walmart scaling their private labels to billions of dollars in revenue in as little as one year. A built-in audience, a stringent focus on costs and margins, and a diverse marketing strategy makes this possible. Heading into 2020, private labels will continue to dominate more as rising acquisition costs show no signs of reversing. ClosingWant to stand out? The Gnomecast could have been called many, many things. It could have been called The Widecast after Wide Days, the Edinburgh-based music convention I attended in the middle of last week, and from the showcases at which two of the songs on this podcast were chosen. Equally, it could have been called the Witchcast, due to the fact that the vicious old Fucker of Working Britain is now a thing of the past. In fact, now that I think about it, a whole podcast dedicated to anti-Thatcher songs would probably have been a distinct possibility, but my feelings on her death are not quite so clean cut. Yes, I am glad she is dead, but it's more of a sense of relief, just a sort of feeling of peace now such a vindictive, spiteful cause of so much harm is finally gone, rather than the sort of air-punching, high-fiving glee which was in evidence after Osama Bin Laden was finally rubbed out. But make no mistake, Thatcher was far more evil than Osama Bin Laden. Never mind domestic politics, her support for despots around the world was directly involved in the deaths of many, many more people than amateurs like Saddam Hussein and Bin Laden. The fact that these people were mostly brown, or at least brownish, leads us to underestimate the horror for which she was responsible, but responsible she most certainly was. To be fair, of course, I don't doubt that Hussein and Bin Laden would have been capable of far, far worse deeds had they had the power to actually carry them out, but I am not sure that should really be an excuse for the likes of Thatcher, Reagan, Bush and Blair. Sorry, that really had nothing at all to do with gnomes, did it. Ah well, move along. 01. Judy Garland - Ding-Dong! The Witch is Dead (00.19)02. M.J. The reason this is called the Nukecast is because I am pretty irritated by the exaggeration of just how horrible it is to be alive in 2011. 2011 is a total piece of piss. It's easy, unthreatening and perfectly comfortable, and the idea that the modern world is in any way topsy-turvy is just plain silly. I am not all that old, but even the eighties, when I was a kid, were far rougher than this. There was actual genuine menace, the world might just have been about to end in a nuclear fireball, and no-one had anything you could honestly call a proper job. So I complain about this for about an hour, while Mrs. Toad calls me an idiot. Welcome to the drunken Toadcasts. Again. 01. Tom Lehrer - Who's Next (00.08) 02. Billy Bragg - Think Again (10.34) 03. Fucking hell, it's been battering it down for the last few days - 'torrent'ial, see, nothing to do with the naughty internets! We've had snow in the morning and pishing rain for the rest of the day - fucking rotten. Combine this with our worryingly leaky roof and honestly, it's a bit of a surprise I am not in a worse mood. As it is, however, I feel relatively chirpy. There is footie tonight, and I will sit up late with some wine and make mixtapes for... well, for no obvious reason whatsoever I have to confess, apart from the fact that I am getting fed up of being embarrassed by the music taste of my nineteen-year-old self whenever I randomly select a tape to play in the van. Also, making tapes is a nice way to listen to vinyl singles which might otherwise be neglected. 01. David Thomas Broughton - Ain't Got No Sole (00.29)02. Lab Coast - Really Realise (06.54) 03. M.J. It's been a longish week, but believe me this weekend is going to be worse. I am offering up my poor old Volvo for sale, which breaks my embittered little alcoholic heart, so it does. I am going to miss that car, we've had some wonderful times pottering about in her and I am going to miss the silly old girl, really I am. This is a joint podcast, seeing as how I was in the pub with Dylan and the poor whelp seemed to have nowhere else to go, I invited him back to the house to add his own particular brand of incoherent nonsense to this week's podcast. Because lazy racial stereotyping is something of a stock in trade around here, I find myself making several lame attempts to bring up Welshness and national identity and all that pish, but ultimately this is just two drunk people chattering about music. More or less the usual, then. Toadcast #64 - The Welshcast 01. Billy Bragg & Kirsty MacColl - A New England (05.12) 02. Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Miniature Kingdoms (14.54) 03. The tenth Toadcast is a Pink Podcast, celebrating all things gay in indie music, but trying to steer well clear of any sort of annoying Graham Norton stereotypes. So, in avoiding anything that might have seen this lapse into the Priscilla, Queen of the Desert podcast I enlisted the help of my friend James, who was Mrs. Toad’s best man at our wedding. As well as being gay, James is a real indie fan so I though he’d be perfect to consult with on the playlist and most of these songs are his choices. It’s surprising actually, just how indie this ended up being.I left off quite a few things I really wanted to play and it’s still the longest ever Toadcast. Ultimately, I’ve tried to explore the relationship between the gay community and indie music, but needless to say there are times where it descends into slightly angry ranting. Hopefully not too much to allow you to enjoy the music though. It’s also not really ended up being as much of a discussion of gay culture as I’d hoped and that is almost entirely down to my own ignorance. I should probably have got James round to help actually present, but that would have been a right pain the arse logistically, as well as technically in terms of capturing both voices on one shitty little webcam microphone. On a technical point, there is a bit of an echo on the vocal recording. This is because I we have moved out of our house for a couple of months while builders tear it to pieces and I am having to rather make do in terms of recording location. I’ll try and sort this out by next week. Also, I at one point described the Book of Ruth as being in the New Testament, which is also wrong. What a muppet. Toadcast #10 - The Pink Podcast 01. Tonight's podcast is a weekend review of a stock in my trading portfolio. I review my history with the investment, and the current status of the stock. Hibbett is a regional sporting goods store that concentrates in cities of 50,000 or less currently in the southeast of the United States.
