Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the returning show friend, the wonderful poet and standup ROB AUTON!It's always a pleasure in Rob's company, and this episode is of course no exception. We start things off very quickly by jumping off the pleasantries diving board directly into the deep waters of life, comedy, craft and eveything else involved. And as always with Rob, you can expect unique takes and perspectives which are inspiring, intriguing and never fail to lead to somewhere you didn't think you'd get to. Much ground is covered including the connection of hydration to bloodwork, the many living quarters in Rob's past, libraries, festivals and incorporating live music into his setup, his history with the Fringe (and Pip's), show making and creating an audience, being positive in your self talk and attempting excitement. Poets have frequently appeared in the Correct Realm over the years. For example, did you know that Edgar Allen Poe once ordered a round of flaming sambucas for the whole pub? And Emily Dickinson could often be found sipping a pint of ale whilst reading her weekly copy of Pints Weekly? Yes, The Moon Under Water and wordsmiths go hand-in-hand; and grabbing the hand of everyone's favourite Pub of the Mind this week is the inimitable Rob Auton!Rob is able to seamlessly blend the world's of comedy and poetry to create shows that are as unique as they are hilarious. He's a mainstay at the Edinburgh Fringe, and even won 'Dave Funniest Joke of the Edinburgh Fringe' in 2013. But something that isn't a laughing matter is just how much he loves pubs, and you can be sure that a lot of thinking has gone into creating his ideal alehouse (just don't expect all his choices to rhyme).Want to hear an extended version of this episode (featuring a Patreon-only choice), gain access to our bonus podcast ‘Behind The Cellar Door' and support the upkeep of the pub? Elis may be the kind of person that constantly has content at the forefront of his mind and body, but even he sometimes has to put other life events first. So in order to enable him to go on holiday to celebrate Isy's birthday, this week's show was specially pre-recorded at 8.30pm on a Monday evening (ironically interrupting Producer Dave's holiday in Portugal). Poet and comedian extraordinaire Rob Auton pops round John's Edinburgh flat to perform some specially curated poetry and chat about his latest show, Elis eats some almonds, Producer Dave puts his swimming pool to good use in a very special Made Up Game and John gets excited about some interesting British place names.
