EP 758: Ox Blood to Aid Stations: The Wild Evolution of Endurance Nutrition

In this episode, we talk with exercise scientist Dr. Nick Tiller, author of the Ultrarunning Magazine article "Protein While Racing, Training Runs to Predict Performance & Progressing to Ultra." Starting from the wild story of Milo of Croton—an ancient athlete who drank ox blood and ate raw animal flesh—we trace how endurance nutrition has swung from carb-loading to fat-adaptation and ask where protein fits in today. Dr. Tiller explains why small amounts of protein during long races can help with muscle damage and taste fatigue, how to "train your gut" just like your legs, and why aid station real food matters more than we think. We also touch on creatine—why it works, why it may not be ideal for most endurance runners—and how to use science and healthy skepticism to cut through the wellness and nutrition noise on the trail. In this episode, Guy talked with Dr. Nisha Manek. She challenges conventional understandings of consciousness and delves into the intersection of science and spirituality. Emphasizing that consciousness is not a product of the brain, Nisha discussed the latent capacities of human beings and the need to elevate our levels of conscious awareness. Through her experiences as a medical doctor and her studies with physicist William Tiller, she explored the potential of intention to affect physical reality, the limitations of modern medicine, and the importance of inner work. Nisha also shared practical advice on meditation and the transformative power of silence. About Dr. Nisha: Nisha Manek is an internally recognized leader in the field of integrative medicine. Nisha's humble background from Kenya propelled her to transcend limitations: gender, ethnicity, and financial status. From Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where she graduated Summa cum laude, to the University of Glasgow School of Medicine in Scotland, Nisha's uncommon tenacity has driven her to ask difficult questions and pursue answers beyond traditional medical paradigms.  Nisha began her career in rheumatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Recognized as Teacher of the Year in the School of Medicine, she brings storytelling as a core skill to bedside medical teaching and on the plenary stage.  But she didn't stop there. Nisha partnered with one of the world's most innovative physicists, Emeritus Professor William A. Tiller of Stanford University, and pushed the boundaries of what is possible in medicine. She is the preeminent doctor of information medicine, which intersects consciousness, biofield science, and rheumatology to improve human health.  She has authored a one-of-a-kind book, Bridging Science and Spirit, which closes the gap between two seemingly separate areas of knowledge. She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom. What if you could sit down with the people actually building the future of personal finance and just... ask them everything? That's exactly what happens in this episode. Joe Saul-Sehy gathers three FinTech insiders around the basement table—Peter Polson (founder, Tiller), Aaron Froug (founder, Grifin), and Ryan Ruff (longtime FinTech pro, Array)—for a rare look inside the industry that's reshaping how we handle money. This isn't about pitching their products. It's about understanding how FinTech actually works, where it's headed, and how everyday people can use these tools more effectively. Peter and Aaron share what they've learned building companies from the ground up, while Ryan pulls back the curtain on the infrastructure most people never see but rely on every single day. The conversation goes deep: What are most people getting wrong about money apps? How can you get more value from the tools you're already using? Where is AI actually making finance easier (versus just adding complexity)? And as creators, how can they design tools that genuinely help people instead of just creating more digital clutter? You'll also hear their take on what's coming next—the innovations that'll matter in five years, the trends that are overhyped, and the blind spots the industry still needs to address. Whether you're a FinTech skeptic or an early adopter, this conversation will change how you think about the apps sitting on your phone right now. What You'll Walk Away With: • The insider perspective on how FinTech tools are actually designed—and what builders wish users understood • How to get more value from the financial apps you're already using (most people only scratch the surface) • Where the industry is headed: what innovations are real and what's just hype • Why some tools work for some people but fail for others—and how to find your fit • The infrastructure that makes your financial apps work (and what breaks when it doesn't) • How AI is changing personal finance in practical ways, not just buzzword ways • What FinTech creators are trying to solve—and where they admit the industry still falls short This Episode Is For You If: • You're curious about what's actually happening inside the FinTech world • You want to use your money apps smarter, not just download more of them • You're wondering what's coming next in personal finance tech and whether it'll actually help • You've felt like financial tools are being built for someone else, not for you • You want the insider perspective without the sales pitch—just honest conversation from people who live this every day Before You Hit Play, Think About This: What's one thing you wish your money apps could do better? Drop it in the comments—these are exactly the kinds of insights that help creators build tools that actually work for real people. In episode 7's Living Leadership segment, I was joined by my long time friend, partner of our sport management program, and outstanding Trinity University alumnus (class of 2000), Terris 'T' Tiller. T is the Director of Alumni Career Engagement at Trinity and returned back home after a distinguished career on the U.S. Modern Pentathlon team and long-time team member at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee.  During our conversation Terris emphasizes the need for leaders to create spaces that allow others to be seen, spaces to know they are valued. He considers equity and inclusion work to be deeply embedded in his day-to-day life and sees it as a way to grow capacity for the entire organization, but he knows it starts with vulnerable leaders who seek to earn trust by being the first to trust. He models that vulnerability for us when he shares stories about his transition from life as a student to life as an Olympian and about the day he knew his competition days were over.  Terris' concluding advice, to stay curious, couldn't be more powerful and perhaps never more important in our current climate.  To conclude the episode, I lectured on chapter 15 of the 10th edition of Peter G. Northouse's "Leadership: Theory and Practice." During the segment, I discuss the Inclusive Leadership concepts described and designed by Donna Chrobot-Mason and Quinetta Roberson.  In the lecture I mention this research article. If you want to know about the reason inclusion and inclusive leadership matters, please read "Gendered Leadership Networks in the NCAA: Analyzing Affiliation Networks of Senior Woman Administrators and Athletic Directors" (request full text here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/323505935_Gendered_Leadership_Networks_in_the_NCAA_Analyzing_Affiliation_Networks_of_Senior_Woman_Administrators_and_Athletic_Directors) I hope you enjoy the episode. Send us a textWhat happens when nine candidates compete for sheriff in a special election? Frank Tiller, newly elected Chairman of the Spartanburg County Republican Party, shares the unexpected challenges and surprising community response as his leadership team navigates what even state election officials couldn't fully advise them on.This engaging conversation pulls back the curtain on local politics, revealing the often-misunderstood nature of political party operations. When Tiller's team inherited a nearly empty bank account and immediately faced organizing major candidate forums, they encountered a common misconception - that political parties are government-funded entities. The reality of grassroots funding comes into sharp focus as Tiller recounts the remarkable moment when community members stepped forward to transform ticketed events into free forums accessible to all voters. The heart of Spartanburg's political renewal beats every Saturday morning at a local restaurant where "CAMP" (Coffee and American Politics) gatherings have exploded from an intimate group of eight to overflow crowds exceeding 100 participants. What makes these meetings special? Tiller explains that unlike traditional political events, every attendee gets microphone time - prompting the most common feedback: "My voice is being heard, and that has never happened before in politics."From navigating the peculiar requirement that the county chairman must collect sheriff candidates' fingerprints to the ambitious goal of increasing primary election turnout from 13% to 20%, this conversation offers a fascinating glimpse into democracy at work at its most local level.Ready to engage with your local political process? Mark August 8th on your calendar for the special election, and consider joining the Saturday morning conversations where candidates and citizens connect beyond credentials to build the relationships that ultimately drive voting decisions.Support the showhttps://www.jacksonfamilyministry.comhttps://bobslone.com/home/podcast-production/

SEASON 3 EPISODE 143: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL REPORT: Which is worse? That Trump is running a “Protection Racket Presidency” and bribed one Senator to vote for his Big Beautiful Soak The Poor Budget Bill while metaphorically bumping off one Senator who wouldn’t? Or that Trump threatened Israel, threatened the government of Israel, if Israel's courts don’t do what HE wants on behalf of Netanyahu – and nobody noticed. Which is worse? Well it’s a trick question because these are actually just two different aspects of the same story. It’s a protection racket. These are a) the domestic operations of the protection racket, and b) the international operations of the protection racket. Thom Tillis, the vaguely responsible Republican senator from North Carolina, refused to let Trump politically rape him Saturday night and would not vote to advance the budget bill. Trump had been threatening him for weeks, months, accelerated it, finally began to ask for volunteers to primary him, Tillis announced yesterday he will retire from the senate at the end of his term next year. So much for Mr. Tillis. So much for somebody, anybody, in the Republican party saying “I owe this country something.” So much for the thought that when the country is up against it and the breaks are beating the boys, tell ‘em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Tiller. I don’t know where I’ll be then, but I’ll know about it and I’ll be happy.” Well I know where Thom Tillis will be: he’ll be back home in Cornelius, North Carolina. Presumably drinking heavily. Reflecting on how he represents the utter moral and ethical decline of the already near-bankrupt and nearly-totally-declined Republican Party. Meanwhile Senator Lisa Murkowski turns out to be Susan Collins with less Kibuki make-up. She sold her soul to get herself a carveout for Alaska, only to find out the Senate Parliamentarian says it violates the Senate's Byrd Rule and the carveout must be carved out. Lol. AND TRUMP THREATENED TO DEFUND ISRAEL - what would be the end of the political career of any other American figure - and nobody noticed. And it seems to have worked. ALSO: WHY KRISTEN GILLIBRAND MUST RESIGN (and get treatment), Stephen Miller has a financial interest in the ICE raids, the plot to make Eric Adams the Republican nominee for mayor of New York, and you missed the new SCOTUS rulings on porn! Pay attention, Mike Johnson! B-Block (37:32) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Jeopardy aficionados worried about a conflict of interest because the contestant was related to the person who was the answer to the question? I was on two episodes of Jeopardy in which a contestant had the same name as the answer to the question, and where a contestant wrote four of the five sketches that were all the answers in an entire category! Plus the Fox host who doesn't know when World War 2 was or which American party caused breadlines; Chris Cuomo thinks AOC destroyed the Democratic Party not, say, he and his brother; and idiot Senator Bernie Moreno discusses "anals" with Laura Ingraham. C-Block (56:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It's that time again. July 10 is the 46th anniversary of my first broadcast on my first full-time broadcasting job, which means you have a choice: you have to listen to it, or skip it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's True Weird Stuff - The Arkansas Ghost   January, 1929. A man named Connie Franklin moved to Stone County, Arkansas. The alleged 20-something began courting a 16-year-old girl named Tiller Ruminer, and on March 9th, 1929, the two were on their way to obtain their marriage license when a group of men attacked them. Tiller survived the brutal assault, but Franklin was tortured to death, and his body was burned in the woods. Months later, a pile of ashes and charred bones was discovered, leading to a bizarre moment in history that included Connie Franklin himself testifying at his own murder trial.
