"Asana is beneficial, but context is everything." www.truthofyoga.com | @danielcsimpson The Truth of Yoga Course Nov 2024 Adam and Daniel explore the complexities of modern yoga practice, particularly the push for performance in asana and the confusion surrounding its original purpose. They discuss the emotional journey that practitioners undergo, the disconnect between asana and traditional yoga philosophy, and the addictive nature of striving for progress. The dialogue emphasizes the importance of understanding objectives in practice and the need for emotional awareness in yoga, ultimately advocating for a reframing of how yoga is taught and experienced. They also touch on the modern yoga landscape, the commodification of yoga, and the search for deeper meaning beyond superficial happiness. Key Points · Modern yoga often emphasizes performance over original objectives. · The confusion in asana practice stems from a lack of clear aims. · Asana was originally about sitting comfortably, not performing shapes. · Emotional processes are integral to the yoga experience. · Striving in practice can lead to addiction and desensitization. · Progress in yoga is often perceived linearly, which is misleading. · Conditioning affects how we approach yoga and our expectations. · Advanced asanas do not necessarily correlate with emotional well-being. · The pursuit of satisfaction in yoga can lead to suffering. · Reframing yoga practice can enhance emotional awareness and understanding. Reframing Ashtanga Yoga can lead to a deeper understanding of its benefits. · Context is crucial in evaluating the practice of asana. · Yoga originally aimed for a state of being, not just physical practice. · Honesty in practice is essential for growth and understanding. · Cultural perspectives on shame and guilt influence modern yoga practices. · The modern yoga landscape often prioritizes performance over true practice. · Finding meaning in yoga goes beyond achieving physical postures. · The commodification of yoga can detract from its philosophical roots. · Self-identity plays a significant role in how we approach yoga. · True contentment in yoga comes from understanding and relationships.
This is a different sort of podcast, featuring interviews I did half my life ago. I originally planned to make a radio documentary, but the audio wound up on MiniDiscs gathering dust.In 2001, I was a foreign correspondent searching for answers. I hoped I might find some in India at the world's biggest gathering – the Mahā Kumbha Melā, where the Ganges meets the Yamuna. I talked to a wide range of people, asking Westerners what had inspired their journeys Eastward.Looking back, I've made one myself – from drug-fuelled confusion to writing a book about yoga philosophy, and a career as a teacher. My younger self had other ideas – he tried to emulate the Melā by staging a festival on Big War Island in Belgrade. However, listening to these chats, I can hear a few echoes of what was to come – plus repeated indications of much still to learn…The first conversation is with Scott McNamara, an American disciple of the yogi “Pilot Baba”. The second is with Susan Shumsky, who learned to meditate with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, then turned to “New Thought” – better known today as “manifesting” – whose positive psychology infuses modern yoga.I'm still unsure about the documentary prospects – not least since I don't work in radio, or know where to start. I also have mixed feelings about the discussions, as the podcast explains. If you have any thoughts in response, please get in touch!

A new MP3 sermon from Crosspoint Church is now available on SermonAudio with the following details: Title: Adorning the gospel Speaker: Daniel Simpson Broadcaster: Crosspoint Church Event: Sunday - PM Date: 2/18/2024 Bible: Philippians 1:27-30 Length: 30 min.
I think a lot of people are like me, we enjoy being right more than we like being wrong. But I also think that leads a lot of us down this path of seeking the ever-elusive perfection, and that causes us some challenges that we might not have otherwise had.So Daniel Simpson and I get into why I am maybe wrong sometimes (or a lot of the time), how we can evolve yoga past this idea of only personal liberation, but also focusing on being good citizens in the world, and more. You are gonna love this chat.KEY TAKEAWAYS:*Is praising our students just a version of praising yourself? That is an interesting train of thought, and I am curious of your what you think about it. I had a good long reflection about this after my conversation with Daniel, and I realized that I have never much been into praising my students, I just really love telling them that they are great. What about you? Are you a praise teacher? Do you like being praised as a student?*If we are all one, how do we have relationships with each other? There is something I want to highlight about that question because I talk a lot to folks about how to use yoga philosophy and lifestyle principles to connect with other people. I think our relationships (of all kinds, I am not just talking about romantic relationships) are some of the most meaningful and nurturing experiences we can have in our lives, and there is a lot of data to support that claim. Have you read The Good Life by Drs. Robert Waldinger and Marc Schulz? If you are curious to explore more about the science behind this topic it is a good and easy read.*Liberation from yoga is liberation from wanting anything. *We can develop an understanding that while yoga texts ask us to become better versions of ourselves, we also can take this knowledge and become better citizens in the world. I love this idea that Daniel puts forth to us. Can we expand our understanding of liberation to also understand our relationships with each other and our greater communities?*We have to find a way to acknowledge our individual experience within a collective experience. As I talked about in the chat, I use this concept very directly while teaching yoga asana classes. I build in time within my classes where my students have the opportunity to answer the call of what their own experience and body needs, and there are also times in that same class where we come together to have a collective experience. Nervous system co-regulation is pretty magical for creating the collective experience, and it is our job as yoga pros to remind our students to also answer that individual call as well.*Stop getting so hung up on “me” and instead be open to the idea that “I might be wrong”. I am going to work on this one, probably for the rest of my life. RESOURCESWorking In Yoga WebsiteWorking In Yoga NewsletterDaniel's WebsiteSPONSORSunlight Streams BlogSunlight Apothecary
Welcome to 2024, Yoga Pros. Our first podcast of the year is with the delightful Michelle Cassandra Johnson, and I was lucky enough to get to ask her so many questions. We had a nuanced conversation regarding being of service to the world, how we hold space for grief, and the tension between the spiritual call to be quiet and the noise we experience in our lives. Take a listen to all her wisdom.KEY TAKEAWAYS:*Often in yoga and wellness we shy away from grief and other uncomfortable topics. In this space, we should do more to carve out the opportunity for folks to feel uncomfortable–because the reality is that we will one day all die and lose everything we have. It is important to remember this work is a main tenant of a yogic practice, and not shy away from it.*To quote Michelle: The spiritual crisis we are moving through at this moment is because we think that we are separate. Using the Kleshas can help us work through this suffering.*Are you feeling overwhelmed at the idea of shifting our work into experiencing both the collective and individual experience? As Michelle said, “I don't know if my practice is working, but it is what I have”. This has been true for me many times in my life, and perhaps for you too. Taking a moment to shift your mindset from “Is it working” to “Does it serve to support me” might help positively change your perspective.*Getting clear on where we can be of service and what our role is can help guide us forward as we shift to be of service more within the world. I got to ask Daniel Simpson, author of The Truth Of Yoga about this as well, and I think you will love what he says. *It sometimes takes a beat for anyone to figure out how to respond to heavy situations in the world, so if you feel called to respond, great. But if you don't, it is also okay to take a moment and pause, research, and figure out what you believe, and then respond if needed.*Take some time in this new year to pause and create an intention for 2024. I do this work for myself as I said in my intro, and so does Michelle. It is worth taking a moment to pause, reflect, and get excited for the upcoming year.
Instead of an interview, this week I'm sharing a talk I gave on whether yoga is really a “path to holistic health”. It was part of a conference at the University of Wales, hosted jointly with the College of Medicine (whose chair is head of King Charles' “Royal Medical Household”).I went first and set the scene with a very brief history of medical yoga, which got quite lively in both the delivery and the Q&A afterwards (included in this episode). As a written introduction put it: "The body was originally an obstacle that had to be transcended for spiritual insight, so the therapeutic model was renouncing the world."Thankfully, that gradually changed over the centuries, so the talk unpacks the evolution of yoga as therapy, highlighting themes that inspire it today. Let me know what you think in the comments here – all questions are welcome! As I mention at the end of the talk, I'm hosting a retreat in the west of England at the end of August, where I'm going to be exploring these sorts of ideas in a practical way. You can find out more about that here. And finally, Ancient Futures is free, but takes time to produce – so all donations are greatly appreciated, whether as a subscriber or by fuelling me with coffee. His approach combines scholarly knowledge with humor and insight, informed by more than 20 years of practical experience. He holds a master's degree in yoga studies (from SOAS at the University of London) and teaches courses at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, on yoga teacher trainings and via his website, truthofyoga.com. How the evolution of yoga scholarship has impacted the space of modern yoga. Reconciling ourselves to a more accurate representation of yoga history. The re-enchantment of yoga. Having an authentic relationship on our own terms with yoga here and now, and also with yoga tradition. What does an ideal yoga teacher-to-yoga learner relationship look like today? Faith, fidelity, and authenticity in our yoga practice. In this wide-ranging conversation with Daniel Simpson we explore questions around how to make use of texts such as The Yoga-Sutra which come from a world-denying, renunciate worldview extolling dis-embodiment and celibacy in a contemporary yoga practice setting which prioritizes embodiment and tends toward body and sex positivity. What elements should be adapted, which should be fully integrated, and what should be rejected as inappropriate for our purposes? Along the way we discuss the ground-breaking work of scholars such as Georg Feurstein, and more recent scholarship from people like Mark Singleton and James Mallinson. We touch upon the neo-liberal focus on the self that has become such a driving force in both contemporary yoga and mindfulness and use sutra 1.33 regarding the "four immeasurables" (aka 'four brahma-viharas) to distinguish the more isolationist project of Classical Yoga and the pro-social project of Buddhist Yoga. In turning toward a more general discussion on dharma, political concerns arise with examples from Brexit and illiberal so-called "progressive" authoritarianism that lead to ever increasing discord and polarization are touched upon. We end with Daniel's "origin story" filled with at least two of the classic "sex, drugs, and rock and roll." Episode 56: Taking Sheffield City FC Global Welcome to the 56th episode of the In The 11 Podcast! Today, Brendan Griffiths is joined by guests from the Sheffield City Football Club! Ash Greenwood, Daniel Simpson, and Ryan Hartle. They share their plans on expanding over to the US and why the next move is to grow bigger outside the UK. Building the club from the grassroots level, Ryan, Daniel, and Ash share that the goal is to promote the advocacy that football is for everyone. Preparing for the differences in the cultures of the game between England and the US is one thing, but getting to fit into the existing structure of the game in another country is different altogether. Nonetheless, they think that community involvement in the football club is just as crucial as it is anywhere. The culture of communicating and getting volunteers for the football club is just one of the many practices they would like to bring over, if not empower, in the US. More on the migration between systems in this episode so be sure to stay tuned! Taking SCFC global: Ash, Daniel, and Ryan share that they have already studied the differences between football and American soccer which is not only about the playstyles but also the structure of the system, the ladder that players can get to climb. Collectively agreeing that the American system is a little confusing unlike in England, they prepared by studying the hierarchy of different leagues and how to grow promotion-wise. Setting up structures that will fit into the American culture of soccer. Having said that regardless of age, gender, playing ability, etc., everyone should have the opportunity to play football, Ash recognizes the fact that it's all in the mindset of a person. They agree that the proper motivation to keep playing is important and knew that they had to be the ones creating this culture of willpower and drive in order to create an energetic environment for the players. About the Sheffield City FC: They are about to start competing in their inaugural season, as a Football Club. Chairman Ashley Greenwood set up the club in 2020 through the lockdown with managers Ryan Hartle and Daniel Simpson, from starting with just 2 U8's teams over the last year the club has grown so much to it has junior teams to the ladies team U23's, Reserves and in their men's 1st Team who will start their first-ever season in the Men's County Senior division 2. With big aspirations and plans in place to shape the club for a push towards the football league, the club is now looking towards finding investment to secure capital to help them achieve their goals of getting up towards the football league. In real estate school, they teach you that the money is made when you buy. But that just isn’t true for apartment buildings. Yes, you have to buy right. But in the multifamily space, the money is made in the execution of your plan to increase revenue and reduce expenses. And the asset manager is responsible for making sure that happens. Daniel Simpson serves as Asset Manager at Nighthawk Equity, the investing arm of The Michael Blank organization. He has nearly 30 years of experience in multifamily, residential and commercial property management, developing an expertise in strategic business forecasting, budget allocation, complex data analysis and property financials. Daniel has an impressive track record of acquiring, renovating and repositioning C-class value-add properties in as little as 18 months. On this episode of Apartment Building Investing, Daniel joins me to share his hands-on approach to asset management, describing what he does on his monthly site visits and how he helps property managers optimize revenue and reduce expenses. Daniel Simpson is the author of The Truth of Yoga (2021), my first guest almost a year ago he returns to SenseSpace. We reflect on the past year exploring what it means to be in a world beyond our control. How can we perceive potential in the world and what deeper understanding of Yoga is revealed in the Bhaghavad Gita. We consider connections between the Gita and Christianity and the wisdom of direct experience. *My apologies for the 3 minutes at the end in which my audio is imbalanced* ~Subscribe to SenseSpace for more conversational journeys~ ~Check out my latest piece 'A day to Remember' on the culturepilgrim substack https://culturepilgrim.substack.com/ Daniel Simpson presents ancient texts for modern times and as well as his recent book the Truth of Yoga teaches online courses. In this episode, I spoke with Daniel Simpson about his wonderful new book, The Truth of Yoga: A Comprehensive Guide to Yoga’s History, Texts, Philosophy, and Practices, just published by North Point Press. It’s an easy read because Daniel is a professional writer having left a burgeoning career in journalism after he became disillusioned with mainstream media. Our conversation dives deep into the complex and patchy history of Yoga, swimming through early, classical and hatha yoga – along with some interesting observations on modern yoga, including whether Silent Disco Yoga is a thing! Kidding aside, this is a serious conversation – and I learned a great deal, especially just how fertile the soil was when the yogic traditions were taking hold – and the creative cross-fertilization between classical yoga traditions and the Buddhists at the time. This episode is a nice complement to our previous episode with Andrea Jain whose book was a scholarly critique of modern, global yoga. A little more about Daniel…. Daniel Simpson teaches yoga philosophy at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, and at Triyoga in London. He earned his Master's degree from SOAS (University of London), and his thesis critiquing mindfulness in schools was published in the journal Contemporary Buddhism. He previously worked as a foreign correspondent – for Reuters, then the New York Times – after studying at Cambridge. His interest in yoga developed in parallel, including frequent trips to India since the 1990s. I hope you buy his book, The Truth of Yoga – it’s well written and researched – but accessible and a quick read. Enjoy this episode!
Daniel Simpson, former foreign correspondent and author of The Truth of Yoga: A Comprehensive Guide to Yoga’s History, Texts, Philosophy, and Practices, talks with J about exposing truth in both journalism and yoga. They discuss Daniels experience of writing for the NY Times after 9/11, why he decided to leave behind a career in journalism and pursue yoga scholarship, what we actually know about the origins of yoga, and making clear distinctions between what texts say and what we choose to do with them. Daniel also shares personal stories and insights from his own life that compelled him to write his new book - The Truth Of Yoga. In this wide ranging conversation Daniel shares: About his euphoric experience during a silent meditation retreat, which completely transformed his relationship with the world and himself. How this transcendent experience transformed his asana practise into a practise of embodied consciousness, a physical practise for training the mind. His thoughts on the relationship between hedonism and spirituality. The connection between Vedic soma rituals and yoga, and the relationship between soma and ayahuasca. How yoga can become an addiction in itself, and about learning to identify and deal with these patterns. That the project of yoga was never about experiencing bliss, but an extreme solution for escaping samsara. About his book - The Truth of Yoga, which distills complex ideas into an accessible format His response to the question: ‘What is yoga?’ His previous work as a journalist and his move into academia, and how both have influenced his approach to writing. Why accuracy is important when presenting historic texts about yoga. The enduring effect of Yoga Body by Mark Singleton and how it influenced the academic study of physical yoga That he hopes his book ‘The Truth of Yoga’ will be used as a bridge between academic researchers and yoga practitioners. About the different and contradictory threads of yoga: dual and non-dual, householder and renunciate. How we can maintain traditional aspects in contemporary physical yoga. About his first trip to India, and his experience of attending the Kumbh Mela in 2001. How yoga ultimately helped him recognise, understand and deal with his issues with substance abuse. How yoga scholarship is a form of practise, a discipline in itself. How living a contemplative life is all about relationship: how we relate to the moment, relate to ourselves, and relate to others. A moment-by-moment engagement with reality. Daniel is a breath of fresh air. His knowledge on the philosophy and history of yoga is so deep yet he is able to share it in a beautifully open, simple and understandable way. I loved having this conversation with Daniel and got so much from it. This is a must for people interested in how the teaching of yoga philosophy and history has changed over the past 10 - 15 years.. Scott Johnson - January 2020 If you enjoyed this podcast then you might also enjoy Scott’s conversations with Dr Matthew Clark, Taylor Hunt and Zephyr Wildman.

Much of what is said about yoga is misleading. To take two examples, it is neither five thousand years old, as is commonly claimed, nor does it mean union, at least not exclusively. In perhaps the most famous text—The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali—the aim is separation, isolating consciousness from everything else. And the earliest evidence of practice dates back about twenty-five hundred years. Yoga may well be older, but no one can prove it. Scholars have learned a lot more about the history of yoga in recent years, but their research can be hard to track down. Although their work is insightful, it is aimed more at specialists than at general readers. Daniel Simpson's The Truth of Yoga: A Comprehensive Guide to Yoga's History, Texts, Philosophy, and Practices (North Point, 2021) draws on many of their findings, presented in a format designed for practitioners. The aim is to highlight ideas on which readers can draw to keep traditions alive in the twenty-first century. It offers an overview of yoga's evolution from its earliest origins to the present. It can either be read chronologically or be used as a reference guide to history and philosophy. Each short section addresses one element, quoting from traditional texts and putting their teachings into context. The intention is to keep things clear without oversimplifying.
