Quackcast 726 - Ego!?

The QuackCast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 11, 2025 69:31

Do you have a big ego? Do you know someone who has? This Quackcast is about utilising egos for comic characters for comedic purposes, to humanise character, or to make villains more unlikeable and or funny. Big egos are a sign of poor self esteem, people inflate their egos to cope with feelings of inadequacy and inferiority. For examples of that we have a certain prominent politician and also a tech billionaire as perfect representations of every facet of that concept. :) Personally I LOVE a protagonist with a big, inflated ego, especially if it's also illustrated that it's undeserved, and often shown punctured. It's pretty uncommon for protagonists to have big egos though unfortunately because people see that as weakness in their character and status rather than making them more interesting. Big egos are far more common in villains, mostly because it's seen as a negative trait, but also because it's an easy way to show how weak and pathetic they are, they're also a goldmine for easy laughs. The latter is the reason that the characters with the biggest egos in fiction are often not the main villain but the villain's lieutenant. My favourite protagonists with big egos are Tank Girl, George Costanza from Seinfeld, Duckman (played by the same actor as George. Jason Alexander), Flashman from the books by George MacDonald Fraser, Space Dandy, Basil Faulty from Faulty Towers, Hyacinth Bucket from Keeping up Appearances, and Meg from the series Drifters. I'd love to name more but it's not a common trait, though you can point out a million villains with massive egos. In the Quackcast I examine Conan the Barbarian as a story about ego: Conan acquires a massive ego as a reaction to being kidnapped as a child and living as a slave, then being trained as a gladiator and lauded with praise and women. That only increases when he gets his freedom, joins his friends and becomes a successful thief. He's then tasked with rescuing a princess from a cult and returning her to her father. His ego is so big he eschews the help of his friends and tries to do it alone. He's captured by the villain, Thulsa Doom, the same man who killed his mother and enslaved him. Thulsa lectures him on the strength of ego and manipulation before crucifying Conan on a tree. As he dies, Conan's ego dies with him. His friends find his body and take him back, reviving him without ego. In then end Conan defeats Thulsa Doom, Thulsa expects his ego to dominate Conan and save himself but Conan kills him the same way Thulsa killed his mother, and does it totally without ego. As a last gesture he burns down Thulsa's temple and his cult disbands: the last two symbols of Thulsa Doom's over inflated ego. Do you agree with my take on Conan the Barbarian? Do you like characters to have a big ego? If so, what are your fave examples? Marked by incredible bravery on both sides, with a good dose of incompetence and accusations of treachery thrown in, the wars would change India forever. And yet, most people, have very limited (if any) knowledge about them. Ironically, on the same day that New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg dropped charges against many of the antisemitic protestors who ransacked Columbia University, June 20, 2024, more than 600 Jewish and Christian participants gathered inside the Palladium Theater in New York City's Times Square to rally against the global scourge of antisemitism. The event, organized by Chosen People Ministries, was entitled “Oppose Antisemitism: Stop the Hate.” Guest host Adam McManus interviews Rich Flashman, a Jewish man who trusted Jesus as his Messiah and is now the leader of the Manhattan, New York branch of Chosen People Ministries which was founded 130 years ago to bring the Gospel to the Jews. In the first half of today's Generations Radio podcast, you'll hear his intriguing testimony of how God used Isaiah 53 and the bold evangelistic witness of a fellow college student at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to bring Flashman to Christ. According to the Anti Defamation League, in the three months following the October 7th massacre in Israel when Hamas attacked, there were 3,291 U.S. antisemitic incidents. That's a whopping 361% increase between October 8, 2023 and January 7, 2024 compared to the same time period the year before. Dr. Michael Brown, a Jewish believer in Jesus and the host of The Line of Fire radio program, spoke to the 4 Satanic reasons why Jews have been hated. 1. God chose the Jewish people for a special mission which Satan wants to thwart. 2. God has guaranteed the Jewish people's ongoing existence, so Satan seeks their annihilation. 3. God promised the land of Israel to the Jewish people, so Satan wants to drive them out. 4. The Messiah is returning to a Jewish Jerusalem, so Satan wants it out of Jewish hands Brown insisted, “The purposes of God will stand and Satan will be defeated in Yeshua's name!” Plus, you'll hear the powerful song by Christian musician Aaron Shust entitled “Jerusalem” which is based on Psalm 122. Albert Einstein declared, “If I were to remain silent, I'd be guilty of complicity.”   Here are 5 ways you can bless the Jews. 1.  Pray for the Jewish people and encourage churches to pray at a main service.2.  Speak out against local acts of antisemitism.3.  Take action through public demonstrations, rallies, lectures, and social media in support of the Jewish community.4.  Demonstrate support for Jewish students on local college campuses.5. Support Jewish friends and visit a local synagogue to let them know, “I am praying for your safety.” (make it personal) If you are an undergraduate or graduate college student, or you have a child or grandchild who is, consider attending the free Courage Conference at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago between August 15-18. It's Tuesday, July 9th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus.  (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Pro-lifer sentenced to 6 months in prison Pro-life activist Cal Zastrow has been sentenced to a 6-month prison sentence followed by three years of supervised release for singing hymns and praying in front of a door leading into the Carafem abortion mill in 2021 in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, just 17 miles east of Nashville, reports The Christian Post. Zastrow told the judge he has tried to live his life “under the Lordship of Jesus Christ” and that “children are a blessing from God.” He closed with Revelation 5:11-14.  U.S. District Judge Aleta Trauger pointed to Zastrow's religious fervor as the problem in her sentencing. Zastrow was one of six pro-lifers arrested in March 2021. Five other pro-life activists, who blocked a Washington D.C. abortion mill in 2020 have been convicted and sentenced to 2-5 years in prison.  As Zastrow indicated, Psalm 127:3 and 5 indeed affirms that “Children are a heritage from the Lord. The fruit of the womb is a reward. … Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them.” Russian bombs hit within half mile of The Worldview staff in Ukraine Several Ukrainian cities came under major aerial attack on Monday morning. It was the most extensive Russian bombardment of Kiev in several months. Another attack in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih resulted in at least 11 deaths. Both cities were locations of Christian family conferences held over the last few days, sponsored by the Generations and Worldview ministries. The attack consisted of at least forty missiles, one of which hit Ukraine's largest children's hospital in Kiev, reports CNN. The hospital was just half a mile from where The Worldview staff was staying. A total of 37 people were killed in yesterday's bombings, reports ABC News. French Parliament split three ways Political division is growing in France. The French election has split the parliament in three ways, reports Reuters. The  right now holds 142 seats, the center has 150 seats, and the leftist coalition has 178 seats.  Since the 2022 elections, the left grew by 36% and the right by 50% at the expense of the center. Iran elects moderate president Another surprise election result came down to the east of France. This time in the nation of Iran. The more moderate candidate, Masoud Pezeshkian, won the national election by a 16.3 million to 13.5 million vote count. The 69-year-old cardiac surgeon opposes the mandatory hijab or head covering for women, and advocates negotiations with the West on Iran's nuclear program. Real estate values skyrocketing in Europe and U.S. Real estate prices are up in European countries. Since 2010, the largest increases have occurred in Austria, Czech Republic, Portugal, and Germany, reports WolfStreet.com. Amazingly, prices for the average home have at least doubled since 2010. Here in the United States, the average price of a home has increased by 89% since 2010.  Hurricane Beryl slowed to Category 1 Cyclone in Texas Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Monday morning in Texas as a Category 1 cyclone.   Galveston, Houston, and Freeport were hit with 80-90 mph winds and ocean storm surges reached 7 feet at points.  The storm is headed into eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas.   Over a ten-day blitzkreig, the Category 5 hurricane did major damage in Jamaica and parts of Mexico, resulting in ten deaths. Presbyterian Church USA doubles down on perversion Last week, the Presbyterian Church USA doubled down on its affirmation of homosexuality, and its opposition to pastors who take the biblical stance on the subject. The resolution to “guarantee full participation and representation” of homosexuals and individuals attempting to change their gender in its worship and governance passed by a vote of 389 to 24.  John MacArthur: Biden is punishment for abandoning God Pastor John MacArthur told Breitbart News in a recent interview that God has given America up to “sexual immorality, homosexual immorality, and a reprobate mind.”   The pastor said that God has taken His hand of blessing off of this society, and “what you get is Joe Biden.”  MacArthur added, “The train is moving so fast down the direction of having been abandoned by God that unless there's a huge spiritual turnaround, there's no way to stop this.” He urged Christians to uphold righteousness in politics, but “to care a whole lot more about the Gospel.”   Romans 1:28 and 32 declares that “they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness. … who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same, but also approve of those who practice them.” Kansas court struck down ban on second-trimester abortions The State of Kansas is now a go-to state for abortion. Since 2020, the official number of child killings in the state is up 152%. At least 20,000 children lost their lives in Kansas last year by chemical and surgical killings. And, in a 5-1 decision, the Kansas Supreme Court struck down a ban on second-trimester abortions on Friday, reports The Associated Press. The high court argued that the state constitution guarantees total access to abortion. Any legislative restrictions would then be deemed unconstitutional. The only conservative on the court warned that the state is becoming known as “a legal regime of unrestricted access to abortion.” Jewish man shares how he trusted Jesus as Savior As Kevin Swanson travels and speaks abroad, I guest host for him today on Generations Radio. I interview Rich Flashman, a Jewish man who trusted Jesus Christ as Messiah. When he went off to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, an Evangelical Christian knocked on his dorm room door. FLASHMAN: “I got a knock on my door and I opened the door and a young man says,  'Hi, my name is Paul. I could talk to you about establishing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.” McMANUS: “Woah.” FLASHMAN: “'Well,' I said, ‘I'm sorry, Paul. I'm Jewish.' He goes, ‘That's okay. So was He.'” McMANUS: (laughs) “Did that surprise you?” FLASHMAN: “You know, I knew Jesus was Jewish, you know, but you know, it's just yeah. But I laughed when he said, like you. I invited him in. I invited my Jewish friends from down the hall as well to listen to him. And he shared the gospel sure that Jesus was the Jewish Messiah, He lived a perfect life. He taught on the kingdom of heaven, kingdom of God, that He suffered and died for our sins, and He rose again, and He gives new life to anyone who believes. “So I said, ‘Why do you think that? And he said, ‘It's an historic fact.' And I said, ‘Well, where's your historic data?' He said, ‘The Bible.' I said, ‘Come on, Paul -- oral tradition, human writing, you know, come on.' He goes, ‘No, the Bible is an historical document. Read it.'” Eventually, after reading Isaiah 53, a chapter that most Jews skip over, Flashman became convicted that Jesus was indeed the long-anticipated Messiah. Today, he leads the Manhattan branch of Chosen People Ministries, which has brought the Gospel to Jews for 130 years. Plus, we talked about their June 20th event held in Times Square in the Big Apple about opposing antisemitism, and how Christians can speak up for Israel and our Jewish neighbors. Listen to my 34-minute interview with Rich Flashman, a Jewish believer in Jesus at Generations.org/radio. That's Generations.org/radio. It's beyond cold outside and we've both been under the weather but we are back this week with our annual Flashman episode! We are discussing the fourth book in the series, "Flashman at the Charge." Perhaps the best of the series so far and a possible jumping off point for new readers to the series. We gush over George MacDonald Fraser's creation, and dive deep into what makes it such a rewarding series. Plus, Matt makes an analogy he promises to repeat in 2024. Thanks for listening! Would Pigweed actually put coal in the stocking of a bad kid? * Pentamom takes us to task on geography and explains the countries named "Guinea." * Did the Sackler family face any consequences as a result of their evil doings with Oxycontin. * What do P&C think of Taylor Swift as Time's man of the year, and what about the fact that universities teach classes about her? * Why didn't we cover "Our Lady of Clearwater" in our show on apparitions? * When are you going to upgrade your sound system? * Is it really great -- as the media seems to think -- that the Baltimore mayor knocked up his girlfriend? * Is there any evidence that the Flashman incident ever happened?

The boys drink and review Crowhill's Tavern Ale, then discuss the international outcry over the Flashman Incident. Some stories, like this one by Hunter Allen, seem like they should stay local, but every once in a while a story catches fire and spreads across the nation. That's what happened when Bob dropped off an old book in the local tiny library. Day 1 -- Bob drops off the book. Pedro picks up "Flashman," by George McDonald Frazier, which is one of the books Bob dropped off. Day 2 -- Pedro takes the book to school, where Ms. Hughes sees it and discovers it's not appropriate for someone of Pedro's age. She asked where he got it, and he said "the library." Ms. Hughes assumed he meant the school library and posts her complaint to Facebook. Day 3 -- Social media explodes and demands that the school librarian be fired. Day 4 -- Twitter can't decide whether to blame Pedro for failing to report the book, but decided to blame his parents instead. Day 5 -- Both of Pedro's parents are called to HR and enrolled in sensitivity classes. Someone finally discovers where the book really came from, which starts a police and FBI investigation to find out who put this horrible book in the tiny library. Day 6 -- The American Psychological Association donates a series of anti-racist, pro trans, pro gay children's books to the school system. Day 7 -- Pedro's parents hire an attorney who reveals the true origin of the book. Day 8 -- There are calls to legislate tiny libraries to prevent something like this from happening. Day 9 -- The author becomes the latest "evil person" on social media. From this point it's the typical insanity on social media and the fur really starts to fly. The story is well worth your time. It shows what happens when the mob gets upset.

In 1973 Richard Lester's rollicking romp The Three Musketeers was released - subtitled 'The Queen's Diamonds' (The Four Musketeers was filmed at the same time and followed a year after) the movie starred Michael York as D'Artagnan, Oliver Reed as Athos, Frank Finlay as Porthos and Richard Chamberlain as Aramis. Perhaps most memorable was the pairing of Raquel Welch with Spike Milligan, as Monsieur and Madame Bonacieux - she the close confidante to the Queen of France and he an easily-bought informant to the villainous Cardinal Richelieu (Charlton Heston). The movie also featured Lester regular Roy Kinnear, the (recently) late Joss Ackland, Faye Dunaway and Christopher Lee. It's a joyous adaptation of the Dumas novel with a script that pops and fizzes courtesy of Flashman author George MacDonald Fraser. Featuring the stylistic flourishes that always mark out a good Richard Lester film, plus realistic depictions of early 17th Century Paris - the squalor as well as the wealth - edge-of-your-seat sword fights and shot through with bawdy humour, The Three Musketeers was a commercial and critical triumph upon release and it is the topic of this week's edition of Goon Pod. Joining Tyler once again are the hosts of Still Any Good podcast - Christopher Webb and Robert Johnson, live from a shed somewhere in the Antipodes during a noisy Guy Fawkes celebration - appropriate for discussing a film which culminates in a grand fireworks display! Welcome to Las Animas, Colorado, "The City of Souls!" Las Animas is the county seat of Bent County and is located in southeast Colorado.  Las Animas means "the souls" in Spanish.  According to one legend, the town is named after a group of conquistadors who died without the last rites sacrament of a priest while exploring the area in the 16th century.     The area is home to several important sites including the historic town of Boggsville and the John Martin Reservoir.  Bent's Old Fort is also located nearby.  The fort is a reconstructed adobe fur trading post.  The original fort was built in 1833 and was the only major permanent US settlement on the Santa Fe Trail at the time.  The original structure was destroyed in 1849 but was reconstructed as an historic site in 1976.  We hope you enjoy our visit to Las Animas!

"There's no such thing as an unfashionable hero or an unsuitable heiress." Hot off their five-hour excursion into Swishbuckler Cinema, hosts John Cribbs and Christopher Funderburg trace the sordid subgenre's origins to George MacDonald Fraser's expansive series of novels featuring Harry Paget Flashman, a self-described "scoundrel with no proper feelings" who often finds himself cowering miserably in the middle of some of the 19th century's greatest military disasters. For this episode, our hosts randomly selected Flashman's Lady (1977), the sixth book of the 12-part "Flashman Papers," to see how successful the author was at mixing rousing adventure with rakish humor. From performing the first hat trick in a cricket match to crossing swords with East Indies pirates and being enslaved in Madagascar, unscrupulous cad and insatiable lecher Flashman never misses an opportunity to represent all the worst elements of colonial Victorian England...yet somehow comes off as delightfully roguish? The discussion digs into the series' multi-layered parody of historical texts, MacDonald Fraser's irreverent razing of cultural myth and how a morally repugnant character can still be appealing as a narrator and leading character within the framework of picaresque fiction. QUACKCAST 576 - Retro Adventure heroes

Retro adventure heroes are an interesting and unique sort of hero. The trope was revived and crystallised by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg with Indiana Jones, but it had existed long before then and continues to persist now in many forms. They're not without their problems But I like these characters. I love their outfits, their competency, intelligence, self sufficiency, and their penchant for exploration and discovery. What is a retro adventure hero? Typically they're an adventurer, a member and representative of a powerful Western country, they like exploring, they're self sufficient, they can survive by themselves in the wild, they can fight, understand many languages, have arcane knowledge of and respect for native peoples and different exotic cultures, they tend to be very worldly and highly educated. This trope was inspired by real life examples, typically explorers from the 19th century, foremost among them was Sir Richard Francis Burton. He was highly educated, a soldier, an explorer, a swordsman and a shameless self promoter. With the explorations of Burton we have the romantic idea of a representative of the British Empire and Western civilisation delving into the hidden worlds of the Arab east and darkest Africa. A partial influence for Indiana Jones was the story of GE Kinkaid and his 1909 find of the remains of a fabulous city accessed through a cave in the Grand Canyon… all sponsored by the Smithsonian institute. Of course nothing about the story was true and GE Kinkaid never existed, but it was quite inspiring nonetheless. My own character, Ace Kinkaid, from my comic Pinky TA was based on GE Kinkaid. Instead of going in the Indiana Jones direction of a “true hero” I decided to take a different tack- since the story was clearly made up and quite stupid (obviously designed to fool people), I made Ace Kinkaid someone who wanted to look like a hero but was in reality a con-man, only out for himself. The most important fictional retro adventure hero is H. Rider Haggard's “Allan Quatermain” (I wrongly say he was Edgar Rice Burroughs' character in the Quackcast). He's another huge influence for Indiana Jones. There are many other popular fictional retro adventure heroes though: Brenden Frasier's character in The Mummy, Romancing the Stone, Lara Croft, El Borak, Steve Canyon, Biggles, Bulldog Drummond, John Carter, Dirk Pitt in Sahara, Flashman (though more of an antihero) and many more, even The Rock's character from the recent Jungle Cruise. Why “retro” though and how can contemporary characters like Lara Croft and Dirk Pit be retro? Well there are a few reasons; number one is that they follow the clothing conventions of a lot of brown, leather, and straps; number two is that they have all the right competencies with fighting ability, self sufficiency, a penchant for adventure and exploration, visiting ruins etc, a good education…; number three is that they come from a retro world view of imperialism, so they can be a representative of the “enlightened modern world” going off to “discover” and explore exotic places - which of course aren't exotic or in need of discovery from the point of view of the locals. This trope can still work just as well in a modern setting because we still continue to think like this, but it works best in the 1920s/30s for a couple of reasons: The aesthetic then is perfect, but this was also the end of the old imperial era. It marked the end of the time when we could still imagine representatives from “western civilisation” exploring unknown places, technology was at the highest point for characters of this trope (aeroplanes, machine guns, trains, steamships…), and many of the original adventure heroes were created in this period because we were romantisising the idea of adventure and empire while it was ending. After the second world war scoured the entire globe and the last gasp of the dream of empire was shattered, the far reaches of the earth no longer seemed exotic anymore or to hold the same mystery. Retro adventure heroes had their hey-day in the transition from colonialism to post colonialism. We like them now for the romanticism of the image of what they were and the spirit of adventure and exploration, that's what we emulate rather than the distasteful idea of a colonialist imperial cultural ambassador, tourist, and thief. Do you have a fave retro Adventure hero? If so, who? Do you even like the trope? This week Gunwallace gave us a musical theme to Caveston - Authoritative violin pronounces and directs. A four stringed general deciding the course of action, laying out the battleplan. Electric guitar listens well and leads the squad on a furious audio assault! Storming forth and prevailing in a mighty show of shock and awe.
