Dan & Paul discuss tips for embodying a character in body and voice when playing D&D at the table. When we compare ourselves to well-known D&D performers, what are simple simple tricks anyone can use, even if we aren't trained actors? Acting involves a broad range of skills, including a well-developed imagination, emotional facility, physical expressivity, vocal projection, clarity of speech, and the ability to interpret drama. Acting also demands an ability to employ dialects, accents, improvisation, observation and emulation, mime, and stage combat. Many actors train at length in specialist programs or colleges to develop these skills. The vast majority of professional actors have undergone extensive training. Actors and actresses will often have many instructors and teachers for a full range of training involving singing, scene-work, audition techniques, and acting for camera. One of the first known actors was an ancient Greek called Thespis of Icaria in Athens. Writing two centuries after the event, Aristotle in his Poetics (c. 335 BCE) suggests that Thespis stepped out of the dithyrambic chorus and addressed it as a separate character. Before Thespis, the chorus narrated (for example, "Dionysus did this, Dionysus said"). When Thespis stepped out from the chorus, he spoke as if he were the character (for example, "I am Dionysus, I did this"). To distinguish between these different modes of storytelling—enactment and narration—Aristotle uses the terms "mimesis" (via enactment) and "diegesis" (via narration). From Thespis' name derives the word "thespian". This description uses material from the Wikipedia article "Acting", which is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share-Alike License 3.0.

Then Kelly takes us to Marching Band class because Myka used to be a whizz on the french horn? Timbales? MARIMBAS! Get it girl! At recess we talk about all the times Myka got kicked out of her friend group. Kids can be so cruel! LEAVE LITTLE MYKA ALONE OR ELSE! Then Lindsey makes an attempt at teaching the class Linguistics with a game called "First Statistics, Now Linguistics". Spoiler: Kelly's edible kicks in during this quiz and things get realllll hairy. Then Kelly ends our school day with a Theatre History class where we play a game called "What A Bunch Of Thespians" where we get all Greek and shit. Question: Who came first? Jesus or Thespis? Before ‘Lights, Camera, Action!’, there was the stage--the theatre. Sometime around the 6th century BC, vibrant theatre traditions began to flourish in classical Athens, Greece, and evolved as various cultures of performers, writers, poets, and artists experimented across the globe with this artistic medium. You may have heard the word thespian tossed around in your high school, claimed proudly by the happy-to-be theatre folk, quoting Shakespeare and practicing their prose and accents. Held in honor of the Greek God Dionysus (known as the God of wine but later deemed as a patron of the arts, he was dualistic in nature--associated with divine joy and ecstasy as well as brutal/blinding rage) was the festival ‘City Dionysia’. It featured competitions in music, poetry, dancing, and singing. A notable winner was a wandering bard named Thespis who, according to tradition, astounded audiences and was the first actor in Greek drama. It was from Thespis that this word was coined, and is commonly used today to describe that which is related to drama and theatre.
