In our last show, we talked about why good people wanted to adopt 'bad' -- known aggressive -- dogs. I'll discuss some of the really good feedback we received on that show, and we'll explore what happens when good people make bad dogs. Many folks have the best of intentions when it comes to their dogs, but they unwittingly make mistakes that cause behavior problems, such as fear and aggression. I'll share my top three reasons why this can happen. You'll also hear stories about dogs that may have started out ok, but took a turn for the worse as a result of good intentions gone wrong. This week Jon Patch chats with Larry Kay, author of Life's A Bark: What Dogs Teach Us About Life and Love. Long gone are the days when being "treated like a dog" was a bad thing. Today, our canine companions thrive under our encouragement and love, but surprisingly, we don't always treat other humans, or even ourselves, the same way. There's so much our dogs can teach us about living a fun, fulfilling life-if only we'd sit up and listen! In this charming book of woof wisdom, you'll discover how to play fair, chase adventure, love unconditionally, and unleash your awesomeness by treating yourself-you guessed it-just like a beloved dog. I recently wrote a book review for Chicago Animal Advocacy on a unique and inspirational book titled Wild Ocean: Sharks, Whales, Rays, and other Endangered Sea Creatures. It is an anthology of 12 stories that are factual, yet have a touch of whimsy about 12 endangered species of sea animals. I was so struck by this collaborative effort of 17 cartoonists and writers I wanted to share it with the audience of Max A Pooch's Awesome Animal Advocates and I contacted Matt Dembicki the editor of Wild Ocean so he could share why he started this project and tell us more about this fascinating book. Coming to a new understanding of dogs and dog training was a conversion of sorts for me. It has been an interesting journey. I went from skeptic to student to evangelist before finding a way to put it all in perspective. It can be too easy to try to right the big wrongs and fight the good fight; especially with all of the online forums out there. Now I focus on being a better trainer by finding what is right instead of what is wrong in the dog world. Questions or Comments?
