This week on Cattitude, Michelle Fern welcomes two remarkable heroes of animal disaster relief: Amy Houston, Founder/Director of Rancher Navy, and Ric Browde, CEO & Co-President of Wings of Rescue. Fresh off being honored by NAVC Gives, these dedicated organizations share how they leapt into action during the devastating central Texas floods — delivering feed and supplies, rescuing displaced pets, and supporting ranchers and shelters when hope was running thin. Hear how Rancher Navy's 24/7 volunteer force mobilizes aid for livestock communities, and how Wings of Rescue's “boots in the sky” airlifts save animals from overcrowded shelters and disaster zones. It's an inspiring look at courage, compassion, and the lifesaving impact of teamwork when animals need it most.EPISODE NOTES: Heroes in the Hardest Hours: Rancher Navy & Wings of Rescue Step UpBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/cattitude-the-1-cat-podcast--6666768/support.
A curious kitten learns the meaning behind each Kwanzaa principle as her family prepares for the celebration - unity, creativity, and community become her adventure.Learn about Kwanzaa through a heartwarming tale of a playful cat discovering family, culture, and tradition. A beautiful story celebrating heritage and joy. ❤️
In this episode, I sit down with author and community-cat advocate Dr. Debra Blaine to talk about her book Whiskers in the Wild (which I am currently reading), a heartfelt and practical guide to saving and socializing community cats. We unpack the important differences between stray cats and feral cats, two terms often used interchangeably, but with very different meanings and outcomes for the cats themselves. Debra shares the beautiful story of how her own stray cat adopted her, and we dive into the world of TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return): when it's the right solution, when it's not, and how to know whether a cat should be returned, rehomed, or rehabilitated. Her insights are invaluable for anyone who cares for outdoor cats or wants to make a real difference in their community. We also chat about Debra's newest creative project: an upcoming fiction mystery series starring (of course!) cats, because who better to solve a good mystery than our whiskered detectives? Tune in for an episode filled with compassion, clarity, and a shared love for helping every cat live their best life.EPISODE NOTES: Award Winning Author, Debra Blaine Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/19-cats-and-counting-on-pet-life-radio-petliferadio-com--6667858/support.

Also: Sei geduldig, sei gelassen, sei glücklich und gesund. Wut schadet nur dir selbst. Gelassene Menschen kommen weiter. Ich freue mich auf dein Feedback. Danke fürs Teilen. Alles Liebe. Keeping it Real During the Holidays: p.s. I Love the Grinch! Patricia (she/her) dives into the emotional and sensory whirlwind of navigating change as an AuDHDer during the holiday season. She unpacks the exhaustion that comes from shifting family dynamics, unpredictable routines, kitten chaos, people coming and going, and the desire to show up with more capacity than she actually has. Patricia speaks candidly about shutdowns, resentment, communication misfires and boundary-setting. This episode invites listeners to honor their own wiring, acknowledge their limits, and give themselves permission to navigate change on their own terms—especially when the world is loud, messy, and demanding far too much. WHAT YOU'LL HEAR IN THIS EPISODE · The emotional weight of constant change during the holidays · Why autistic and AuDHD nervous systems struggle with unpredictability · How people coming and going can destabilize daily rhythms · Sensory overwhelm from decorations, noise, and social expectations · The shutdown mode that follows too much "peopling" · Resentment that canform when needs aren't communicated directly · That awkward dance between wanting to show up and feeling over capacity · Kitten chaos as both joy and sensory overload · Feeling responsible for everyone's experience (hello, people-pleasing!) · The grief of not feeling safe to voice your values or boundaries · Family conflict and the ripple effects on your emotional regulation · Why inconsistency can be draining for some neurodivergent brains · The need for predictability, routines, and familiar sensory anchors · Internalized pressure to be "easygoing," especially around holidays · The truth-telling wisdom of the body when burnout hits · "Harvest feast" (aka Thanksgiving) recovery mode · Observing subtle family dynamics that others overlook · Using pacing and gentle self-compassion to navigate the season · How even positive changes can be dysregulating · The reminder that honoring your limits is an act of self-love SOUND BITES · "Change really affects me. I overdid it, and now my body is telling the truth." · "Even things that you enjoy can be dysregulating and overwhelming." · "If someone could respond differently, they would—we're not choosing to have difficulty with change." · "Inconsistency is very difficult for me; it's not about the tree, it's about the mismatch." · "I think what I call depression is really resentment for not being direct." SENSITIVITY IS NOTHING TO APOLOGIZE FOR; IT'S HOW YOUR BRAIN IS WIRED You are not broken. You were shaped by systems that weren't built for you. You deserve rest, joy, and support exactly as you are. PODCAST HOST Patricia Young (she/her) was a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for over 17 years, but she is now exclusively providing coaching. She knows what it's like to feel like an outcast, misfit, and truthteller. Learning about the trait of being a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), then learning she is AuDHD with a PDA profile, OCD and RSD, helped Patricia rewrite her history with a deeper understanding, appreciation, and a sense of self-compassion. She created the podcasts Unapologetically Sensitive and Unapologetically AuDHD to help other neurodivergent folks know that they aren't alone, and that having a brain that is wired differently comes with amazing gifts, and some challenges. Patricia works online globally working individually with people, and she teaches Online Courses for neurodivergent folks that focus on understanding what it means to be a sensitive neurodivergent. Senior Cats are near and dear to Rita's heart, having adopted several of these precious felines. Sometimes they cats end up in the shelter due to no talk of their own when their owners pass away or move to a care facility. Often overlooked at adoption time, senior cats still have a lot of love to give and can be the perfect companion for someone looking for a quiet kitty. Having known love all of their lives, it's important to get these sweethearts into loving homes and give them a second chance at love. There are some things to consider when adopting one of these special angels, but nothing that should preclude them from getting adopted. FIP, Feline infectious peritonitis, is a feline disease every cat own dreads. Once 100% fatal, great advances in the cure, and preventative medication, mean no cat must die just because of a FIP diagnosis. However, not everyone can afford the expensive treatments. Listen as Rita talks with Peter Cohen about FIP, the symptoms, new medications, and how the FIP Warriors organization is working hard to ensure medication is available to everyone who needs it.EPISODE NOTES: Taking the Fear out of FIP, a discussion with Peter Cohen Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/19-cats-and-counting-on-pet-life-radio-petliferadio-com--6667858/support.

This week on Cattitude, Michelle Fern chats with writer and critic Rebecca van Laer about her debut memoir, Cat. Van Laer explores how our lives with cats reshape the wild we've tried to domesticate—what “tame,” “neuter,” and “indoors” say about nature and about us. She shares why she chose a life plus cats (not kids), and how “undomesticating” herself alongside her senior companions Toby and Gus reframed love, work, and family. From cats' mysteriously divine histories to millennial burnout in a content-marketing grind, maternal fault lines, and the radical permission in feline laziness and pleasure, Rebecca's reflections purr with humor and honesty—right down to Gus's opinion: “I don't want to be famous…I just want to go to the basement.”EPISODE NOTES: Toby, Gus & Me: Choosing a Life Plus Cats with Rebecca van LaerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/cattitude-the-1-cat-podcast--6666768/support.

"A cat that is well socialized is highly adoptable. A cat that is not well socialized sits in the shelter. It's an important part of your fostering responsibility to get them ready to live outside. Before it was just saving their lives. But now we know better.” This episode is sponsored-in-part by Maddie's Fund and The Community Cat Clinic. In this episode, host Stacy LeBaron welcomes back Marnie Russ, founder of National Kitten College, for an update on her innovative approach to neonatal kitten care. Since her first appearance on the podcast in 2016-2017, Marnei has grown her innovative "Kitten College" program from a small local initiative into a national movement that has fundamentally changed how shelters approach kitten fostering and care. What started as a business plan that would have "gotten an F in college" has evolved into a sophisticated system that increased kitten saves from 92 to nearly 1,600 annually while achieving an extraordinary 94-96% live release rate for neonates. Marnie explains how her grade-based foster system (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) allows fosters to specialize in the age groups they prefer while ensuring kittens receive optimal socialization through multiple placements. This model challenges traditional fostering wisdom that discouraged moving kittens between homes, instead proving that strategic movement enhances socialization and health outcomes. She details how the program evolved organically, with fosters creating their own "conveyor belt" systems and team approaches that maximize both volunteer satisfaction and kitten success rates. The conversation explores the critical intersection between TNR work and kitten programs, addressing how Kitten College supports community cat efforts by providing reliable placement options for trapped litters. Marnie discusses her partnership with UC Davis and University of Florida to ensure all recommendations align with current shelter medicine best practices, her work developing the first national neonatal kitten training center, and her commitment to making these resources free or low-cost for rural and under-resourced communities. This episode demonstrates how innovative thinking about traditional shelter practices can create scalable solutions that benefit both animals and the people who care for them. Press play now for: How Marnie's original collaboration with National Kitten Coalition led to studying major nurseries nationwide The evolution from 92 kittens annually to nearly 1,600 with 94-96% live release rates for neonates The grade-based foster system (freshman through senior) that allows specialization and prevents foster burnout Why moving kittens between foster homes improves socialization rather than harming it How the "conveyor belt" system emerged organically with foster teams working together The critical connection between TNR efforts and kitten placement programs during summer months Partnership strategies between Kitten College programs and community cat trappers Working with UC Davis and University of Florida to align practices with current shelter medicine Development of the first national neonatal kitten training center in partnership with Humane Rescue Alliance The transition from Animal Welfare League of Arlington to becoming an independent national nonprofit Funding challenges and commitment to providing free or low-cost services to rural communities Success of "Taking the Fear out of Bottle Feeding" course as Maddie's University's top-performing class Why traditional "every two hours" feeding schedules are outdated and discourage potential fosters Creating community connections where kitten programs can support each other nationally The importance of employer partnerships to enable workplace bottle feeding for dedicated fosters Resources mentioned: National Kitten College website (https://www.kittencollege.org/) Email: info@kittencollege.org National Kitten College Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/p/National-Kitten-College-61558629895690/) Maddie's University online courses (https://university.maddiesfund.org/) Animal Welfare League of Arlington - original program location (https://www.awla.org/) Animal Welfare League of Arlington Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/AWLArlington/) Humane Rescue Alliance - DC partnership (https://www.humanerescuealliance.org/) Humane Rescue Alliance Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/humanerescuealliance/) UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program (https://www.shelterlearniverse.com/) University of Florida Shelter Medicine Program (https://sheltermedicine.vetmed.ufl.edu/) National Kitten Coalition (https://kittencoalition.org/) Sponsor Links: Maddie's Fund (https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/maddies623) The Community Cat Clinic (https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/catclinicga) Follow & Review We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet.
