We do not understand why Cubby is still at the shelter! He's our longest-stay adoptable dog - he's been with us since January 10th. This tall, handsome drink of water is a perfect gentleman! He walks on a leash like a dream, is calm around other dogs, happily self-entertains with a squeaky toy, and would make an absolute best friend to just about anyone. He's only 1-2 years old, weighs about 70 pounds, and is tall and leggy with shiny black fur. We suspect that he is some kind of lab/shepherd mix. He can look a little intimidating in his kennel and occasionally jumps on people when he first gets out - mostly because he is excited to see you! The volunteers all vie to take him out first in the morning. Cubby did well when he met some older kids but is not a fan of cats...or, he might be perhaps too much of a fan of cats! Cubby is neutered, HW negative, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. Check out his profile on Petfinder - you can see a video of him with his squeaky toy. And, his adoption fee is sponsored by one of our fabulous volunteers. Come meet Cubby and take him home Saturday morning from 9-12! Cubby is at Berrien County Animal Control, 1400 South Euclid Avenue, Benton Harbor, MI 49022. The shelter is full! We are offering a $45 dog adoption special through the end of May and will be open Saturday for adoptions 9-12. Check out Cubby's friends on mi564.petfinder.com or come to the shelter at 1400 S. Euclid Benton Harbor 9-5:30 M-Th, 9-2:30 Friday. Bring any resident pets and make sure they are up-to-date on their rabies vaccine. We have a vaccine clinic at Eau Claire Fire Station on June 23rd 10-2. Sign up on our website berriencounty.org/animalcontrol or call the shelter at 269-927-5648. If you've experienced the joy of adopting a pet, you know that the wonderful feeling of welcoming a new family member to your home is often preceded by involves numerous challenges that can be both cumbersome and emotionally draining. Prospective pet owners frequently encounter a convoluted and extended application process, necessitating comprehensive questionnaires about their living conditions, lifestyle, and prior experiences with pets. This detailed scrutiny, while crucial for ensuring a suitable match between the pet and its future home, can be overwhelming. These experiences can deter first-time pet adopters from considering adoption as a viable means of getting a dog or cat, which in turn results in deserving animals remaining in shelters instead of going to their forever home. Even experienced pet adopters admit that the adoption process is somewhat broken, largely due to the limited resources with which most shelters are forced to operate. Years ago, one of my close friends, who has a passion for adopting senior dogs, attempted to build an app to serve as a universal database for qualified pet adopters, hoping to streamline a largely similar, unnecessarily repetitive process across the many animal rescues and shelters in the country. While his efforts were unsuccessful at the time, I had always thought it was a good idea, and wondered why the concept was unable to gain traction. Fast forward to late 2023, and I was introduced to Nicole Patrick, Founder of Rescue Spot. When I looked at the Rescue Spot website, I saw my friend's vision from years ago, beautifully and elegantly brought to life. When I sat down with Nicole, who is a former actress, she explained how her exposure to the horrors of puppy mills and pet stores selling designer dogs in New York led her to found a matchmaking service for pet adoption. Nicole decided to gear her services towards the people who were going to these high-end pet stores and looking for designer dogs, and instead connecting them with pets from shelters and rescue organizations. However, this business model was not without its challenges. Notwithstanding the fact that she was trying to run her matchmaking service while working full-time as an actress, these other challenges associated with her efforts to provide an alternative to backyard breeders, puppy mills, or other places that may be fostering poor treatment of the animals from which they were profiting led Nicole to seek an alternative career path. She left her acting career, and after spending a few months in Africa, she returned to New York and began volunteering at various shelters and rescues in New York. This experience allowed her to understand the complexities and difficulties faced by rescue organizations and shelters in managing adoptions. Nicole observed that despite the high volume of adoptions and the significant effort required in this process, most of the funding in these organizations was dedicated to animal care and vetting, leaving limited resources for employee support. Her insights from both volunteering and working in employee roles at these organizations shaped her understanding of the challenges in the pet adoption and rescue process. Ultimately, Nicole's experience led her to found Rescue Spot, which is a platform that simplifies, streamlines, and standardizes the entire pet adoption process for both pet adopters and rescue organizations. Nicole describes the platform as a double-sided marketplace that is differentiated from the two major pet adoption platforms, Petfinder and Adopt-a-Pet.com, by the fact that when a prospective adopter registers for Rescue Spot, they fill out a one-time universal application that they can use to instantly apply to any pet on the platform. Check out the episode to learn about the Rescue Spot solution, and a discussion of various potential partnerships that the platform is exploring.

What is the story of your dog? So many tender mercies connected us with Nutmeg ~ maybe that's why Dog is God spelled backwards. You're listening to the Love Tidbits Podcast, where you'll discover a small, tasty, delightful, bite-sided tidbit of love ~ I'm your host, LeAnn Austin  Hey y'all, welcome to Love Tidbits, episode #63: Nutmeg  About seven years ago, an amazing woman named Richie was driving on the interstate from Alabama to Georgia, and she thought she saw something moving out of the corner of her eye and she wasn't sure what it was. So she circled back around, took the next exit, drove back around, and pulled off on the side of the road. And there she discovered two baby puppies and a mama dog. Now, she loaded up the baby puppies into her car because she wasn't sure if the mama dog was still alive. But then she saw her move just a little bit at the very end, so she scooped her up as well and put her in her car, and took all three dogs home to her already two dogs that she had there.  And she nursed those three dogs back to health throughout the next year. Well, fast forward a year and LeAnn decided that maybe it was time for her to get a dog. Remember, I have four boys and they had been asking all their lives for a dog, and Jeff had too. Now they had never really pressed me on it, but they had wanted a dog, and I'm like, no, four boys is enough, we don't need a dog. But I was starting to think, maybe we do. My second son was getting ready to graduate from high school and I thought, if we're gonna get a dog, we need to do it soon, or these boys are gonna be all out of the house.  So anyway, apparently when you need a dog, there's a lot of places you can find one, but Jeff found a dog on Petfinder and so we made an appointment and we drove out to take a look at this dog. Now we had seen a couple other ones before then, and we went to see this one and both of us just fell in love with her. She is, I don't know what kind of dog, cuz I don't know all my dog names, but she's a rescue dog kind of part lab, could be part pit bull, kind of a mix, that kind of a dog. And she was excited to see us and we were excited to see her. We talked about it on the way home, and I thought, alright, I think we can get a dog. So we did. We've had her for almost six years, and what a ride it has been. So lots of learning and training took place, especially at the beginning.  Just understanding her and helping her do things.  I think it's so fascinating the things that we learn from dogs. So a couple things that I learned from Nutty is the sniffing; dogs love to sniff, and when I take her on walks or runs, she wants to sniff at everything. And it used to really annoy me, I'm like, come on, let's go, no sniffing. But now it really creates curiosity for me. I'm like, huh, maybe I need to slow down and smell the roses. Just like she takes time to sniff everything on the side of the path. So just the curiosity from her and watching her do that and also the nice balance between her sniffing things and then, alright LeAnn, I'm right by you walking or running, whatever we're doing. And then sometimes she'll pause and sniff and then back to whatever we're doing, like running and walking and it's just fun to watch her do that. So her taking time to sniff everything really has helped me pause and be like, okay, here's some time to slow down. Here's some time to appreciate all the things around us. So I'm so grateful that she's taught me that.  One other thing that I've learned from Nutmeg is unconditional love. She loves me no matter what.  When I'm frustrated that she's chewed up the fence, or an object in our house, or whatever she's done, unconditional love. She always loves me, always no matter what, and she's excited to see me. So what has your dog taught you, and what do you love about your dog? It's fun to think about what we've learned from dogs and what we love about them. Oprah Winfrey shares:  "Over the years I have felt the truest, purest love - the love of God, really, I imagine that's what God's love feels like - is the love that comes from your dog." Hmmm, something to think about.  Have a good one y'all ~ and here's to our dog, and unconditional love.  If you're enjoying this podcast, please share and leave a review, to help others hear tidbits of love. Because of the work I do to help people adopt dogs from dog rescues and shelters across Ontario, I occasionally get feedback from people regarding their personal experiences with dog adoption. In the past year, I have had 6 people share strange and abnormal adoption experiences with me and 5 out of 6 of these experiences have been with the same Toronto-based, GTA dog rescue that I will not name for legal purposes, but think you'll be able to figure out by the time you're done this episode or reading the comments on social media. The term scam is defined as a deceptive act or operation. This term covers more than just the people on Petfinder posing as dog rescues that are taking your money before you even see a dog. It also applies to the RARE dog rescue or shelter that is misleading adopters by failing to provide support, care and information that is necessary for the health and safety of everyone involved in the dog adoption process. The five experiences that were shared with me fit the description of a deceptive operation. So today I'm going to, anonymously, share some of these experiences as these people have either received threats to not speak about this dog rescue or are fearful because this rescue organization is known for trying to hush whistleblowers. So, listen along as we point out the red flags present in these experiences, as well as some additional red flags I recommend you watch out for in order to avoid disreputable dog rescues while searching for a rescue dog. Please note that 1 red flag does not a scam make but three or more is a sign that you would be best to look elsewhere!MORE DOG RESCUE RED FLAGS

3 Reasons Why Social Media Could Be Cramping Your Rescue Dog Search | Episode 22

Pawdoption Guide Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2022 21:28

If you have followed me for much time you'll know that I believe there's an art to finding the best rescue dog for you. Sure, sometimes things just fall into your lap but otherwise, it takes some straight-up dedication to find your perfect match. I've found that a lot of people who will say they are looking for a rescue dog are really just searching casually on Facebook and Instagram while occasionally checking Petfinder. To me, this is the best way to get frustrated and prolong your search. In this episode I'm going to shine some light on why this approach is not setting you up for success and a few ways I am going to encourage you to search like it's your job and to me that means frequently, consistently and thoroughly. FYI: This is not about working harder, it's about working smarter. Let's capitalize on the effort you're putting into finding a compatible rescue dog.3 reasons why social media could be cramping your rescue dog search:The Algorithm: Social media has an algorithm that determines what you get to see. If you are seeing a particular post it likely means that this post is quite popular and has a lot of engagement. The likes, share and comments are a good indication of this. So when you see an available rescue dog show up on your feed it's likely that that dog has received a decent amount of interest and if you choose to apply you will likely be applying for a dog that is going to get A LOT of applications. Now, don't get me wrong, this doesn't mean it's not worth applying it just means you are entering a much bigger pot so there will be a good likelihood that someone else will outshine you in the application process. The Timing: Often, but not always, available dog profiles are first put up on the dog rescue's website or their Petfinder profile. Because there have been large numbers of applicants for dogs, many rescues will cut-off applications at some point in order to spare themselves an impossible task. This means it's helpful to find the profile first on their website or Petfinder because if the profile is there you can almost always apply, whereas by the time you see that profile on social media you are more likely to go to where you need to apply and find that they are no longer taking applications. I'm sure you've seen those social media posts from rescues where they post a dog but say they've already received sufficient applications or are “no longer accepting applications.” You can avoid this by going right to the source. The Discouragement: Not unlike a lot of things on social media, if you perform your search and constantly see dogs that are not filtered or are highly sought after you are likely to deal with a lot of mental dialogue. For instance, you may be seeing a lot of dogs that don't meet your needs or you may get a bit invested from seeing their picture before you really know much about whether this dog is suitable for you, all because there's no way to filter on social media (unlike Petfinder). On the other hand, if you are seeing popular dog rescue posts and do get excited and are thinking about applying you often see the number of post likes, shares or comments and immediately think “Well, why bother - there's hundreds of comments and there's no way I'll get the dog!” This ability to see others' interest just allows you to cast doubt on your ability to adopt the dog. It truly NEVER hurts to try if the dog's profile is compatible with you - no matter how many people have seen the post but many people will be influenced by the overwhelming response these posts get and will discount it altogether. All of this creates a sense of impatience because you are bombarded with pictures of available dogs that don't suit you or seem unreachable. Impatience is your biggest enemy in your search for a great rescue dog. That is why I suggest you keep your social media search casual for adoptable dogs. Put the time and effort in elsewhere while allowing the Facebook and Instagram rescue dogs to slip into your feed. Listen to the full episode to get some tips on bettering your rescue dog search or join the Pawdoption Guide Membership Experience to get assistance during the entire search, application, adoption and integration process - stop struggling and start thriving with your rescue dog.

The Secret to Finding Your Dream Rescue Dog | Episode 14

Pawdoption Guide Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 27, 2022 23:05

I want to start with a quote today, “People who succeed have a goal, a dream and make their plans and follow them.” The founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics said this and I don't just believe it works, I know it works. As with any dream, you've got to breathe life into it by talking, writing and sharing about it or it may never come to be.When I set out to get my dog Geller I knew what I was looking for and because I had that vision in my head of exactly what I wanted my first dog to be like, I was able to fly past all of the dog adoption profiles that weren't right for me. It's like having tunnel vision - your brain filters out the riff raff and you just see what is within the realm of what you want. When it came to adopting my second dog Rory, it was much the same. I had always hoped to own a dalmatian and had gone to visit one at the Guelph Humane Society, his name was Stanley and he had food allergies. He was lovely but we were too late, I believe we were the 18th application put in for him and at that time it was more important to have been one of the first applications, rather than within a batch of them. However, having met him helped me know that it was possible to fulfill that dream and maybe one day I would own a rescue dalmatian. After a few months of continued searching, I came across an 8 month old rescue dalmatian on Petfinder. This time around I wanted a training challenge in order to test my dog behaviour skills. I knew what troubles I was and was not interested in taking on. For instance, I'd handle some barking, submissive behaviour and a lack of obedience but I wasn't interested in taking on a dog with a bite history (as I knew we were looking to have children soon) as well as resource guarding or separation anxiety. Because I had these details sorted out, I could envision what I did want and it made my rescue dog search more focused. This is why I've included a section dedicated to dreaming about your rescue dog in the Pawdoption Guide Membership Experience. Within it there's a detailed questionnaire that really helps narrow down many factors in dog adoption in order to specify the ideal rescue dog for you. After you take this questionnaire you get the opportunity to summarize and sort the results to further solidify that vision. It's this part that dog adopters often skip when looking to get a rescue dog. They have a general idea but are usually too flexible about what they want. They let the market or current inventory determine their wants rather than having a vision and whole-heartedly going after it until they find it.So that's it, that's the secret to getting the rescue dog of your dreams! It's VISION, it's INTENTION, it's TUNNEL-VISION, it's DREAMINGAaaaand then it's being STUBBORN, it's being PATIENT, it's being DETERMINED to find the dog that fulfils your dog ownership dreams. At the start of this year I attended a workshop hosted by A Medium Named Bri and Wild Honey Coaching. It provided a safe environment to cultivate my dreams for the year and was a great reminder to manifest what we want in any area of our lives. I strive to do this every year and encourage you to find a ritual that works for you.I actually created a vision board on canva.com that contains images and words that encapsulate what I want to achieve this year and I think I'm going to make this another activity for the DREAM section of my membership so that they can have a wonderful reminder of the rescue dog they're aiming to find. Because of course, there are times where people become more flexible to align themselves with dogs that they see available for adoption and I want dog adopters to push past this temptation and stay true to their dream. If you stay consistent and keep dreaming big the pay off is amazing! The commitment to your pet is also stronger because you're like two pieces of a puzzle, and although there will still be some work required during integration, there will be no question that this dog is worth every ounce of effort you expend! So don't forget to dream when you start your dog adoption journey. How to Avoid Adopting a Dog with Preexisting Health Conditions | Episode 10

You may have noticed that I've been rotating through topics on this show to make sure there's something for every one of you no matter where you are in your dog adoption journey. There's been the occasional tangent and some shows help with multiple aspects of the process but in general, there's the search, the adoption and the integration of your dog into your home. This episode is mainly about the dog adoption search and even the decision to adopt versus purchase a puppy. I often hear that people have fears about getting a rescue dog and that's why they go the other route. Well, one of the most common fears amongst people looking to adopt is adopting a rescue dog with pre-existing health conditions. This could mean getting a dog that has undiagnosed issues, chronic issues or concerns that are not disclosed to the adopter.Certainly, this fear is not unfounded. I myself adopted two sick cats that had to be euthanized just months following adoption. However, I look back now and know there are some questions I could have asked that may have helped me avoid this. So, I have some great tips in this episode to serve you well while you do your best to get a healthy new member of the family. However, first I want to address how people often remark that this fear is why they got a puppy; ‘it's a ‘fresh start' with a puppy'. Although, it's not untrue that it can be a ‘fresh start' when it comes to training as you are starting at square one. It is not true that getting a puppy means they will not have or develop, it doesn't develop health conditions. As an RVT working in an animal hospital, I've seen many puppy owners struggle with chronic diarrhea, allergies and malocclusions (teeth abnormalities) among other things, shortly after they settle into their new home. So let's just agree that no matter what way you choose to get a dog, there can be health concerns that arise - you will not always know what is coming down the pipe. This is why I think it's best to be prepared and get pet insurance, have money allocated monthly toward your pet or have an emergency fund set aside to cover routine healthcare concerns and emergency expenses as well. Tips to avoid adopting a dog with preexisting health conditions:BREED - If you're looking for a specific breed or come across a mixed or purebred dog that you're interested in, look up the common health concerns for that breed. This way you can be aware of possible conditions that could arise or that can aid you in asking more specific health questions prior to adoption. For example, I knew some of the main health concerns for dalmatians when I was considering adopting Rory: bladder stones, allergies, blindness/deafness and epilepsy were among them. This helped me ask detailed questions to the rescue about her diet and if she has shown any symptoms of any of these conditions. It also helped me watch for any signs of those conditions during the meet and greet. The Discovery Planet list of dog breeds I mention in this episode is no longer available. However, Petfinder has a comprehensive resource for dog breeds that includes a health section under each breed, this is a great place to start your research.RECENT VETTING - Only adopt a dog that has been seen by a veterinarian recently. Reputable rescues will ensure that any dog they take in is up to date on vaccinations and spayed or neutered. These occasions require physical exams and ensure that any health concerns that are observed are communicated with the rescue. Make sure to ask outright that the dog has been given a clean bill of health from a vet and when they were last seen. REPUTABLE RESCUES - A reputable dog rescue will be upfront with potential adopters about health concerns in the dog's adoption profile. This is because they have the rescue dog's best interest at heart and want to ensure the adoptive family is ready and willing to take on any preexisting conditions. Check out my podcast on How To Use Petfinder and Avoid Petfinder Scams to find some criteria that will help you decipher reputable rescues from scams. CHECKLIST - Use a checklist during your search and even during the meet & greet to remind you to assess the rescue dog's health. When you become a member of the Pawdoption Guide Membership Experience, you get access to a detailed checklist that walks you through what to look for during your meet and greet and what questions to ask before and during it to be as informed as possible before deciding to adopt a rescue dog. Just a reminder that my membership is launching soon in 2022 and you can join the waitlist if you're interested in finding out more. For now, make sure you have assessed the dog's:skinhair coateyesearsmouthnosefeet walkIf you notice any abnormalities, ask about them! Upon Rory's meet & greet, we noticed she had red bumps on her under belly skin. I asked the rescue about allergies and they didn't have concerns. As it did not seem to bother her so I wasn't too concerned. It turned out to be a bacterial skin issue and she was good as new following one course of antibiotics. In all honesty, you can do all of these things and still find health concerns following adoption but this is no different than the health concerns that could arise with a puppy. This is simply a possibility with dog ownership. The great news is that reputable rescues have improved their transparency about health conditions as well as their response. Whenever possible they have usually started treatment or fully treated issues prior to adoption. Dog adoption has really come a long way in this regard. The best way to safeguard yourself from taking on a dog with a preexisting health condition is to follow the tips I've shared with you today and get pet insurance. Being a responsible dog owner means being there for your dog through sickness and health and the best way to do that is by having secure funds which support you in taking them to the vet whenever the need arises.

If you haven't heard of Petfinder, it's a search engine for adoptable pets in North America. Many rescues and shelters regularly upload available pet profiles to Petfinder as well as their own website or Facebook page. Petfinder then categorizes these pets so you can easily use specific search criteria such as breed, age, size and gender to find compatible matches. A very common question amongst Googlers right now is “Is Petfinder a scam?” Petfinder is a great resource for pet adopters BUT it's not foolproof.I myself have used this tool to find my own rescue pets and to assist in my search for clients. It's not all encompassing so I also use a spreadsheet of 50+ rescues to make sure I see as many available pets as possible. This spreadsheet of Southern Ontario rescues will be available to all members when the Pawdoption Guide Membership Experience launches in 2022!Some helpful tips on how to use Petfinder:> Start specific with filters> Use the desktop version> Be flexible with your location> Avoid out-of-town or out-of-country dogsThis tool is being abused by illegitimate rescues and puppy brokers, at no fault of Petfinder. So here is how I avoid scams with this resource.Consider These 4 Questions Every Time You Use Petfinder:1. Does the rescue or shelter have a quality website or a long-standing Facebook page with an active following?2. Is the rescue or shelter a registered charity or have not-for-profit status?3. What is the rescue or shelter's process?4. Is the animal currently in your country? Here's a friendly reminder for you, if it seems too good to be true it probably is!Employ these 4 questions with every search to ensure you're using the tool and it's not using you!Have you found some questionable rescues on Petfinder? Message me @pawdoptionguide on Instagram or Facebook to tell me more. Of course you can't start your search unless you've narrowed down what you're looking for! In this episode of the PawsGo pawdcast, Karen and Jean chat with Cara Sue Achterberg – an author and animal welfare advocate.  This is Cara's second visit with the pawdcast and she's back with some very exciting news.Inspired and supported by her work with Northern Virginia-based rescue Operation Paws for Homes, Cara has launched a new not for profit specifically to bring awareness and change to small municipal shelters and pounds, primarily in the south.  Through Who Will Let the Dogs Out https://whowillletthedogsout.org/  Cara's goal is to connect those small rural shelters and pounds with volunteers, rescues and resources in an effort to change the heartbreaking outcomes for too many homeless dogs and cats. Here's a look at what Cara is working to change –These dogs live in sparse conditions with few resources and no extras. They are held in chain-link kennels behind police stations, at the city dump, or in squat concrete buildings with no heat/AC until their owners come for them or they are destroyed to make room for new dogs that arrive. Their pictures are not on a shelter website or Petfinder. Rarely is there anyone working to address their physical, emotional or behavioral needs, let alone search for an adopter. Their only chance beyond being claimed by their owners is for a rescue worker to visit the pound and ‘pull' them, transporting them to rescues sometimes several states away.To help support Cara's initiative, PawsGo will donate $5 from each Not Alone wine bag sold online or at one of our pop-ups.  All PawsGo items feature original artwork and are produced locally to our home in Alexandria, Virginia.  These bags make great holiday or hostess gifts.  In additional to holding a bottle of wine – a bunch of tennis balls, dog toys or dog treats also fit perfectly in each bag – www.pawsgo.com

The next time you're on Facebook, search for Daily Gardener Community, where you'd search for a friend... and request to join. I'd love to meet you in the group.   Important Events September 10, 1817  Birth of Richard Spruce, English botanist and bryologist. A fearless explorer, he spent fifteen years botanizing along the Amazon river. Toward the end of his journey, he managed to smuggle out cinchona saplings, which were a promising treatment for malaria. He was most fascinated by small plants - unassuming mosses and liverworts. He wrote, I like to look on plants as sentient beings... which beautify the earth during life, and after death may adorn my herbarium… September 10, 1825  On this day, French King Charles X honored the Belgian painter, Pierre-Joseph Redouté, with the Legion of Honor. To test his skills, Queen Marie Antoinette once summoned Redouté in the middle of the night and ordered him to paint a cactus. He did. Redouté was also a favorite of Josephine Bonaparte and her flowers at Malmaison are the subjects of his most beautiful work. A master painter of lilies and roses, Redouté was known as "the Raffaele of flowers." September 10, 1855  Birth of Robert Koldewey, German archaeologist. He supposedly discovered the location of one of the Seven Wonders of the World - the ancient Hanging Gardens of Babylon in southern Iraq. He also found the famous Ishtar Gate (1902), which he cut into pieces and smuggled to the Pergamon Museum in Berlin where it remains to this day. Despite working for over two decades, the Hanging Gardens site was only half-excavated when he was forced to leave the country in 1917. His discovery of the gardens has since been refuted. September 10, 1870  Birth of Lilian Gibbs, British botanist. When she wasn't working at the British Museum in London, she was going on expeditions. She was the first woman and botanist to ascend Mount Kinabalu (Borneo) in February 1910. She discovered many new plants and is remembered by many plant names including Racemobambos gibbsiae ”rass-ih-MOE-bam-bos Gibbs-ee-ay" (Miss Gibbs' Bamboo). September 10, 1903  Birth of Cyril Connolly, English literary critic and writer. In The Unquiet Grave, he wrote: Fallen leaves lying on the grass in the November sun bring more happiness than the daffodils. September 10, 1981  On this day, the Lancaster New Era (Pennsylvania) featured a story about the impact of hormones on plant growth: South African botanists discovered that a birth control pill pushed into the soil next to a plant stem can produce dramatic effects on growth and improve foliage. Research has shown that hormones in the pill accelerate fertilization and development of plants.   Unearthed Words Agapanthus and peonies in June. Scented stock and sweet peas in July. Sunflowers and sweet William in August. By the time September's oriental lilies and ornamental cabbages appeared, she wasn't hiding upstairs in the workroom anymore. She was spending more time in the shop, answering the phone, dealing with the customers. One Sunday she spent the afternoon at an allotment belonging to a friend of Ciara's, picking lamb's ear and dusty miller and veronica for a wedding, and didn't think about Michael once, but she kept remembering a Patrick Kavanagh poem she'd learned at school, the one about how every old man he saw reminded him of his father. ― Ella Griffin, The Flower Arrangement   Grow That Garden Library The Well-Gardened Mind by Sue Stuart-Smith This book came out in 2020, and the subtitle is The Restorative Power of Nature. Before this book came out in 2020, I don't think Sue had any idea just how timely this book was going to be. I remember when Sue's book was finally released, I heard an interview with her and also an urban gardener in California. The two of them together talked about the importance of gardening and for so many people who were really suffering at home during the pandemic, gardening became a way of coping - along with pets. A lot of people got pets during the pandemic. This is why it was so hard to adopt a pet on Petfinder - or source plants and seeds. In fact, we're still struggling with the repercussions of that particular year because growers not only sold their plant inventory for  2020, they often borrowed against some of the plant material that they were saving for 2021. Of course, many of us know the healing power of gardens. But what I loved about Sue Stewart Smith is her unique take on all of this. Sue approaches gardens from her area of expertise, which is psychology. And it's helpful that Sue is also a passionate gardener herself. Now I love this aspect of gardening - their power to heal and help us - and I could do a deep dive on this all day. I love talking about it. I love reading about it. What I really like about Sue's book is that she offers endless examples of the power of gardening and its impact on our brains, on our thinking, on our ability to be happier, to continue to process and learn and grow, etc. It's so, so powerful. Now it's been over a year since this book has been out. So if you're looking for used copies, there are definitely some available on Amazon. This book is 352 pages of garden power - the power to heal, restore, and save us. You can get a copy of The Well-Gardened Mind by Sue Stuart-Smith  and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $10   Today's Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart September 10, 1806  On this day, the botanist David Hosack wrote to Thomas Jefferson at Monticello about Lewis and Clark. He was hoping to gain access to any potential plant discoveries on the expedition: If, sir, the gentlemen who are at present on their travels to Missouri discover any new or useful plants I should be very happy in obtaining a small quantity of the seeds.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Shortly after, I developed my private practice, Paws & Reward: Coaching people, Training dogs. Through my life experiences, education and my relationship with Sully, I have developed a unique approach that inspires behavioral transformation for both dogs and their pet parents.  I believe that our relationship with our canine companions can be a window into how we relate to our world around us which allows us an opportunity to expand as individuals. This innovative, personal development approach is designed to help people cultivate self-awareness and intimacy in the relationship with their dog, themselves and others. I outlined this approach in my book: Human-Canine Behavior Connection: Building Better Relationships Through Dog Training. In addition to my private practice, I have had the pleasure of working for three different animal shelters directing their behavior departments in CO & CA, the most recent being the Dumb Friends League. I have implemented many innovative canine and feline behavior modification programs. As a result of these efforts, I was invited to present at the Humane Society of the United States annual conference in 2014 and 2107, Ontario SPCA’s conference as well as Petfinder’s Adoption Option shelter conferences.  In addition to that success, I have provided behavior consulting to shelters in Texas, Colorado, California, Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Currently, I am working for the Colorado Humane Society as their Community Liaison offering animal shelters and professionals consulting, education and resources to rural parts of Colorado. I am thrilled to be making a difference.
