At Spirit Fest USA in Dulles, Virginia, we sat down with Vanessa Anseloni from the Spiritist Society of Virginia for a conversation that bridged neuroscience, spirituality, and service to humanity. What we discovered was a movement dedicated to teaching, healing, and inspiring...rooted in Spiritism, a philosophy and science exploring our nature, origins, and destiny as immortal beings. Vanessa, a neuroscientist and psychologist, shared how the Society blends rigorous study with heart-centered practice, offering free programs for children, teens, and adults. From lessons on emotional intelligence to outreach for the homeless in Washington, D.C., their mission is grounded in compassion and inclusivity, welcoming people of all faiths and backgrounds. We dive deep into:What Spiritism really is and how it connects the physical and spiritual realmsThe groundbreaking MRI research revealing the “spiritual brain”Why mastering your emotional intelligence is essential before deep spiritual workThe Society's powerful outreach programs, and why kids play a central roleMediumship in your DNA: the science and history behind this innate human giftHow Spiritist Parenting, Kardec Radio, and the Spiritist Magazine are helping spread light globallyAlong the way, Vanessa shares fascinating stories, like asking her spirit guides for help during her master's degree exams, and waking with exactly the information she needed. We also explore how Spiritist lessons for children (including wisdom from Benjamin Franklin's 13 virtues!) are shaping the next generation of compassionate, conscious leaders. This episode is a reminder that spirituality isn't about abandoning reason; it's about aligning the mind and heart to better serve yourself, your community, and the world. What if science and spirituality are not in conflict, but are two sides of the same coin? In this episode, Sandra is joined by Dr. Rafael Rezende, an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School who is also a dedicated lecturer and teacher in the Spiritist community. Dr. Rezende shares his powerful personal journey, from having visions as a child in a Catholic family in Brazil to finding answers in Spiritism. He explains the science behind mediumship, the evidence for reincarnation, and how diseases like autism can be understood from a physical, psychological, and spiritual perspective. Listen to his "goosebump" story of dreaming of his future children and how a pre-birth message gave him a new perspective on a challenging health diagnosis. This is a profound conversation that builds a bridge between the rigorous world of academic science and the expansive truths of the soul. *Find out more about Spiritism at https://spiritist.us/ - the YouTube channel he mentions is https://www.youtube.com/@usspiritistfederation - His talk can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/live/UKX5Yyl0WBc?si=o7GJvIODhGc9WvzF and the film, Nosso Lar (Astral City) can be viewed with English subtitles at https://youtu.be/0uWe-3JYc-Q?si=BNKCMEQcJpKMrztZ Thanks for listening! A recent story from NYC documents two slaughtered chickens that were found on an Upper West Side median, following a recent similar case close by on Broadway and West 92nd Street. The NY Post reports that this “has activists worried they were killed in an animal sacrifice ritual.” Headless goats, chickens, and pigeons have also been found in Texas and Florida, respectively Galveston beach, a Tampa cemetery, Cape Coral, the Courtney Campbell Causeway - and other locations too. Most of these cases are tied directly or indirectly to Santería, an Afro-Caribbean religious practice that developed in Cuba during the 19th century. As a mixture of Yoruba religion from West Africa, Spiritism, and even Catholicism - like Voodoo - it involves animal sacrifices. Contrary to popular belief or personally bias belief, the US SCOTUS ruled in Church of the Lukumi Babalu Aye v. City of Hialeah (1993) that certain animal sacrifices were legal. One opinion on the case reads: “Our review confirms that the laws in question were enacted by officials who did not understand, failed to perceive, or chose to ignore the fact that their official actions violated the Nation's essential commitment to religious freedom.”It's also ironic that Catholicism, a universal religion of people who drink symbolic blood and eat symbolic flesh, is the partial basis of Santería - and Voodoo; both condemned by the largely Christian west. The Corpus Christi and Transubstantiation are based on the concept of sympathetic magic, that life itself is in the blood, and that this force belongs to God as per Deuteronomy and Leviticus. Drinking the blood bestows life, i.e., it is a medicinal remedy, though of a more spiritual variety. That is despite the Bible itself being filled with and overflowing with animal blood, from Genesis to Revelation, and the fact Christians, far more than any other group, are considered the largest consumers of pork alone, not to mention other meats. And unlike HALAL or KOSHER dietary rules, Christians have none for the slaughter of their meals. Around 100,000 cattle are slaughtered daily in the US for the luxury of meat, along with 25 million chickens and 350,000 pigs. The worst part, estimates are that approximately 1/4 of all US meat is wasted annually. What's worse, religious animal sacrifice or gluttonous animal sacrifices that go to waste? Although Christians maintain the blood and flesh rituals, many distance themselves from the idea, while the Jewish custom of Kapparot involves the slaughter of a chicken and public sins. Animal sacrifice for strictly religious purposes and in honest faith - not to mention the symbolic nature of such sacrifices as they relate to the carnal self - are one thing, but the ritualized nature of abortion and body/organ harvesting is another. In South Africa it is common for some children, especially albino ones, to be sold or kidnapped for body parts and organs. Albinos are believed to contain good fortune within their body and blood. As Daily Mail reports: “those who believe in black magic and traditional medicine claim their fair skin and eyes can bring good fortune and cure afflictions.” Be it for religious rituals, health, or profit, Planned parenthood was also doing something similar as per undercover videos and singer like Azealia Banks performed live chicken sacrifices in her closest. In the last 15 years there have been multiple stories about Chinese-made infant flesh pills being smuggled into Korea. All throughout Europe during the 16h-17th centuries, without doubt, “many Europeans, including royalty, priests and scientists, routinely ingested remedies containing human bones, blood and fat as medicine for everything from headaches to epilepsy.” And as with Countess Elizabeth Báthory, who believed the blood of young women would protect her skin, Stanford scientists have found that “old mice given infusions of blood plasma from young mice outperformed old mice who got plasma from old mice.” In the 1960s the rubella shot was manufactured with a virus grown from human fetal cells, taken from an abortion case. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. In this episode of the Creative Genius podcast, I interview Rebe Huntman about her debut memoir, "My Mother in Havana, a memoir of magic and miracle." Rebe shares her personal story of losing her mother at a young age and the subsequent decades of feeling disconnected from her memory. Driven by a deep longing and intuition, Rebe embarked on a 30-day DIY pilgrimage to Cuba to seek a different perspective on grief and connection. The conversation delves into how Rebe's background as a Latin dancer led her to discover the spiritual roots of Cuban dances and the traditions of honoring the deceased. Rebe recounts her experiences immersing herself in rituals dedicated to the goddess Oshun, visiting the sanctuary of Cuba's patron saint, and meeting with a spiritist who she hoped would connect her with her mother.Rebe and I discuss the importance of intuition and following one's unique path, even when it doesn't seem logical. We also explore the disconnect in Western culture from ancestral connections, magic, and meaningful rituals, contrasting it with the Cuban traditions of keeping the dead close. The conversation touches on the challenges of staying creative and connected to one's inner voice in the face of overwhelming global issues and personal fears. Rebe shares her belief in creativity as a portal and emphasizes the importance of honouring inner longings and choosing to champion humanity. She also shares her personal rituals for grounding and connecting with her intuition and ancestors, offering practical advice for listeners seeking to do the same. Ultimately, Rebe's story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit, the wisdom of intuition, and the potential for magic and miracle in our lives, even in the darkest of times.

fWotD Episode 2793: Palo (religion) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 27 December 2024 is Palo (religion).Palo, also known as Las Reglas de Congo, is an African diasporic religion that developed in Cuba during the late 19th or early 20th century. It draws heavily upon the traditional Kongo religion of Central Africa, with additional influences taken from Catholicism and from Spiritism. An initiatory religion practised by paleros (male) and paleras (female), Palo is organised through small autonomous groups called munanso congo, each led by a tata (father) or yayi (mother).Although teaching the existence of a creator divinity, commonly called Nsambi, Palo regards this entity as being uninvolved in human affairs and instead focuses its attention on the spirits of the dead. Central to Palo is the nganga, a vessel usually made from an iron cauldron. Many nganga are regarded as material manifestations of ancestral or nature deities known as mpungu. The nganga will typically contain a wide range of objects, among the most important being sticks and human remains, the latter called nfumbe. In Palo, the presence of the nfumbe means that the spirit of that dead person inhabits the nganga and serves the palero or palera who possesses it. The Palo practitioner commands the nganga to do their bidding, typically to heal but also to cause harm. Those nganga primarily designed for benevolent acts are baptised; those largely designed for malevolent acts are left unbaptised. The nganga is "fed" with the blood of sacrificed animals and other offerings, while its will and advice is interpreted through divination. Group rituals often involve singing, drumming, and dancing to facilitate possession by spirits of the dead.Palo developed among Afro-Cuban communities following the Atlantic slave trade of the 16th to 19th centuries. It emerged largely from the traditional religions brought to Cuba by enslaved Bakongo people from Central Africa, but also incorporated ideas from Roman Catholicism, the only religion legally permitted on the island by the Spanish colonial government. The minkisi, spirit-vessels that were key to various Bakongo healing societies, provided the basis for the nganga of Palo. The religion took its distinct form around the late 19th or early 20th century, about the same time that Yoruba religious traditions merged with Roman Catholic and Spiritist ideas in Cuba to produce Santería. After the Cuban War of Independence resulted in an independent republic in 1898, the country's new constitution enshrined freedom of religion. Palo nevertheless remained marginalized by Cuba's Roman Catholic, Euro-Cuban establishment, which typically viewed it as brujería (witchcraft), an identity that many Palo practitioners have since embraced. In the 1960s, growing emigration following the Cuban Revolution spread Palo abroad.Palo is divided into multiple traditions or ramas, including Mayombe, Monte, Briyumba, and Kimbisa, each with their own approaches to the religion. Many practitioners also identify as Roman Catholics and practice additional Afro-Cuban traditions such as Santería or Abakuá. Palo is most heavily practiced in eastern Cuba although it is found throughout the island and abroad, including in other parts of the Americas such as Venezuela, Mexico, and the United States. In many of these countries, Palo practitioners have faced problems with law enforcement for engaging in grave robbery to procure human bones for their nganga. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:01 UTC on Friday, 27 December 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Palo (religion) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Matthew.

Let's dive into the life and work of Allan Kardec, the founder of Spiritism, exploring the philosophy, history, and impact of this 19th-century movement. Kardec, a French educator, sought to bridge the gap between spirituality and science by codifying Spiritism—a system based on communication with spirits, reincarnation, and moral evolution. We examine his key works, including The Spirits' Book and The Mediums' Book, and discuss Spiritism's influence on French intellectual circles and its rapid growth in Brazil, where it evolved into a major religious movement. Join me as we explore how Kardec's Spiritism offers answers to profound existential questions, the nature of the spirit world, and the ethical framework it provides for understanding human suffering and inequality. The episode also touches on Spiritism's connections to broader esoteric traditions and modern occult movements. CONNECT & SUPPORT

Practices of guardianship — invoking guardian deities, enlisting spirit help, clearing spaces of questionable energies, and establishing boundaries around ritual, communal, and personal space — are common to animate traditions across the world. In many traditions, guardianship is absolutely central as we navigate a world of forces, not all of which are traditionally seen as beneficial. So traditional practitioners — even as they commune with the natural world — also draw clear boundaries, send wayward spirits fleeing, and even do battle with malefic energies. Such practices challenge modern western minds and are often dismissed as 'superstitious' or as the least important part of any traditional practice. They rub up against modern visions of a cosmos or a natural world that is 'all good', as they suggest the existence of things like malefic forces that are incompatible with a modern rationalist vision. So modern spiritualities forgo traditional understandings of guardianship and promote a vision of 'openness' within a universe that is 'all good.' Yet many traditions focus a lot of attention on closing, sealing, and directly establishing boundary. Even in non-dual traditions that see a cosmos ultimately beyond yes and no and good and evil, practitioners spend years establishing boundary, cultivating discernment, and invoking guardian entities. With the rise of modern freeform spiritual experimentation, people are invoking and inviting spiritual forces and navigating heightened states of consciousness often without any attention to guardianship. In such a time, when mental states are fragile and traditional safeguards are no longer in place, it can be important to understand what guarded space looks like personally and ritually. Guardianship practice needn't be complicated. It starts very simply, with offering and gratitude, and with how we navigate our own thoughts and feelings. Featuring conversations with Tantric scholars Dr. Ben Joffe, Dr. Hareesh Wallis, and Dr. Sthaneshwar Timalsina, author and Ayurvedic Doctor Robert Svoboda, sculptor Rose B. Simpson and activist Nadia Irshaid Gilbert, this episode dives deep into how traditional systems have viewed guardianship practice and its necessity in an age of spiritual free-for-all and excessive exposure to internet imagery.
