Watch to see how Nulo is meeting this challenge!

I first encountered Bryn Souza several years ago as a member of a writers group called BlogPaws and through the Dog Writers Association of America. We met in person the first time at the DWAA annual awards ceremony in February 2020 and again this past spring at Global Pet Expo. To know Bryn is to see the sunshine in every day. She has a bright, engaging personality and she loves dogs. Oh my dog, how she loves dogs, especially her Boston terriers. A graduate of Quinnipiac University with a master's in business administration, Bryn is smart and articulate. She hosts a blog about her life with her dogs at ADogWalksIntoaBar.com and she's now the marketing director of Pet Hub, the first company to launch a QR code ID tag in an attempt to lower the United States' dismal return to owner rate for lost pets. Bryn's life took an awful turn in 2022. She lost her beloved Bean, her marriage, her cat Mimi, the home she loved … I wished I could have reached out to her and say, "Hey, I'm here if you need me," but I was in my own shitty year. Bryn is our guest this week, sharing her journey through these last 18 months. Through it all, she has remained positive … and open to signs sent to her from Yoda and Bean, who are both in the next realm now, wherever that may be. What to listen for 2:24 The losses come one after another 10:02 How Bryn managed multiple losses 12:49 When her comfort dog Yoda starts slipping away 16:28 Guilt knocks on the door 20:23 Messages from Yoda and Bean 28:45 How to stay open to change --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/onelastnetwork/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/onelastnetwork/support
In the latest episode of Petworking, we had the pleasure of hosting Matthew Sherman, SVP of Marketing at PetPlate, for a deep dive into the rapidly growing fresh/frozen refrigerated pet food market. In a market that has been long been dominated by Freshpet in the grocery space, and DTC players such as The Farmer's Dog, Nom Nom, JustFoodForDogs, and Ollie , an increasing number of traditional manufacturers are moving into the fresh refrigerated space, and giving pet parents the option of buying fresh refrigerated foods at their local pet food store. PetPlate exhibited at Global Pet Expo for the first time this March, and announced that it was expanding its distribution from DTC to retail. Tune into the episode to hear Matt and I discuss channel strategies for fresh/frozen refrigerated, including why DTC fresh-refrigerated players are considering moving into retail, as well as the numerous strategic challenges that manufacturers have to navigate in this market (e.g., cold-chain distribution, getting into the business of owning/leasing/acquiring space in retailers' refrigerators/freezers). Matt also discusses his extensive prior marketing experience at leading CPG companies such as The Coca-Cola Company, L'Oréal, and Chobani, and offers his opinion of how marketing in the pet food space differs from his previous experience. Some of the key topics we dive into include: Omni-channel Shopping: The trend of omni-channel or multi-channel shopping is becoming the natural order of things. Consumers are switching channels a lot, and D2C (Direct-to-Consumer) is a new and very convenient channel. However, reaching more customers, more needs states, and more occasions is crucial. This is where retail comes into play. The fresh/frozen pet food industry is seeing a progression where brands are selling in multiple channels, including retail. Trial and Entry Barriers: It's hard to sample and get people into the fresh/frozen pet food category if they're not familiar with it. Shipping frozen products is expensive, making trial difficult. This is one of the reasons why the focus is on independent pet stores where more knowledgeable shoppers and associates can help overcome this barrier. Lowering the cost of entry is also important. For example, PetPlate offers an 8-ounce cup for $8 in independent retail stores, which is less expensive than ordering a subscription or trying raw or freeze-dried premium categories. Growth and Expansion: The installed base of freezers is beginning to expand, and the logistics of this new food form is beginning to reach scale. Matt predicts that there will be somewhere between three and five brands that end up being winners in the fresh/frozen pet food category. The differentiation will come down to the feeding experience. For example, PetPlate offers a fully curbside recyclable cup that is designed for multiple uses, similar to a 16-ounce container of yogurt or cottage cheese. We also talk about new and differentiated offerings that have recently appeared in the space, such as Spot Farm's Full Moon Freshly Crafted, which has individually frozen pieces of meat, and Portland Pet Company's all-natural shelf-stable fresh offering.

186 - If you're a regular listener to this podcast, you know I'm a big fan of gratitude and acknowledging our wins. And holy cow, am I full of wins and gratitude today. J. Nichole Smith and I are still soaring from all the wins we counted at Global Pet Expo, where we re-introduced the pet industry to Animalhaus Stock Photography. Global Pet Expo is one of the biggest pet-industry trade shows and to get in, you have to be either an exhibitor or a buyer. It is seriously exclusive and we were granted access to more than 1,000 pet-related businesses from around the world. The response was overwhelmingly positive! Not only were they super excited about the stock photography available on the site but there was also one big clincher for many of those businesses: our new match-making service where we make it SUPER easy for them to hire commercial pet photographers by matching them with alumni of our Commercial Pet Photography Academy (more details on that soon). As if that wasn't enough, we also invited three photographers from our recent class of Commercial Pet Photography Academy alumni to join us and kick-start their own commercial photography aspirations. Amanda, Angela, and Jennifer were voted by their peers to have the biggest breakthroughs from the course and that's how they got their golden ticket to Global. While there they were unleashed to network with all of those businesses and use the knowledge they gained in the course to go home with huge successes, including some contracts to start negotiating! On today's Hair of the Dog podcast, Nic and I take you behind the scenes of Global. We chat about all those wins and the future of the commercial pet photography industry. Bob Daniell is president and CEO of a small startup company called American Hemp Corporation in Reno, Nevada, where they are working with farmers to build the hemp industry in the Silver State. Focused on fiber and grain production and processing, Daniell sees huge potential in Nevada and the surrounding region. “Nevada grows 385,000 acres of the world's finest alfalfa hay,” Daniell said. “I'd like to take over about 10% of that as a cover crop. If we can get 40,000 acres of industrial hemp growing in Nevada, we'll have a $300 million industry.” This week on the Industrial Hemp Podcast, Daniell lays out his vision for the company and the various markets they are developing, from biochar to biodiesel to fish food. Earlier in his career, Daniell was a VP at Siemens, one of the world's largest manufacturing corporations, where he oversaw North American supply chains, and he brings that knowledge of supply chain development to the hemp industry in Nevada. According to Daniell there are three segments to a supply chain. Assured supply, which is where the grower and the farmer come into play. Assured refinement, which is where the off-taker, the processor, the handler, the manufacturer come into play. And finally assured demand, the target customers. Daniell is also involved with the Nevada Industrial Hemp Fiber Cooperative, which is helping farmers develop markets for fiber hemp.
