On today's show we discuss intersectionality, liberation and veganism with our guest, Andrew. Andrew is a Melbourne born, raised, and based vegan activist of 18 years, advocating for human and non-human animal rights and social justice issues, whilst also raising a young vegan family. Being proudly Māori, Andrew is focussed on decolonialism in thought and praxis, intersectionality and allyship, and applying these principles to strengthen connections across a variety of communities, and currently invested in Palestinian liberation and anti-war efforts. Links:Kristy Alger's book: Five Essays for Freedom: A Political Primer for Animal Advocates https://revoltbooks.com/products/feffAp Ko and Syl Ko's book: Aphro-ism: Essays on Pop Culture, Feminism, & Black Veganism from Two Sisters https://lanternpm.org/book/aphro-ism/ Christopher Sebastian: https://www.christophersebastian.info/Stewart Mitchell: Vigilante Vegan https://www.instagram.com/p/CWFSf_Ds1v2/Yvette Baker: Collective Abolition https://www.instagram.com/collectiveabolition/  Quote read by Andrew: For some readers, I anticipate that this approach to animal rights may seem radical, even incoherent. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Bringing Monitoring, Evaluation and, Learning to animal advocates: 6 months of lessons learned, published by Nicoll Peracha on April 26, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Introduction and Summary Why focus on Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning in the animal cause area? When we started our international interventions in September 2023, we were quite certain that MEL could increase the cost-effectiveness and impact of interventions in the animal cause area, and avoid doing harm. See e.g. this post about why Anima International suspended the campaign to end live fish sales in Poland (Anima International 2022). Tools and insights from MEL can help organizations design potentially more (cost)-effective interventions from the start, know if their interventions are on track, and adapt their implementation when necessary. We also believe MEL can contribute to increasing the evidence base for interventions in the animal cause area. Neill Buddy Shah, a co-founder of IDInsight, observed, "The animal welfare research infrastructure and ecosystem is incredibly immature compared to what has developed over decades in social policy, medicine, and public health." (EAG San Francisco 2019). Since 2019, research and the number of animal-cause area-specific research databases have increased (Navigating Research Databases for Animal Advocacy, 2024). However, the amount of research available still pales compared to other cause areas. Uncertainties and findings We were less certain about the willingness and ability of Animal and Vegan Advocacy organizations to engage with MEL. We also didn't know if MEL tools used in other cause areas such as Global Health and Development would be applicable and useful in the animal cause area. Overall, MEL is still a neglected topic in the animal community. EA-aligned organizations generally use MEL tools but many others don't, and so far we have only verified a handful of organizations that have complete MEL systems in place that do not require additional support. Specialized support for MEL is still very limited. If you are interested in supporting animal organizations with MEL, please consider working with us as MEL Associate or communications volunteer. Below you will find 11 key lessons learned from our pilot intervention to train and support animal and vegan advocacy organizations in Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning. We hope this post will be particularly relevant for charities and funders in the animal cause area and will lead to more organizations engaging with MEL and sharing best practices. In this post, we will share what we've done so far, 11 key lessons we've learned, how they have influenced our strategy, and what you can do to help advance MEL and the overall evidence base in the animal cause area. I. What have we done so far? The Mission Motor's current interventions were shaped during AIM's (Charity Entrepreneurship) Incubation Program 2023. Between September 2023 and April 2024, we trained and supported eight animal and vegan advocacy charities to develop and implement MEL systems provided ad hoc support to another seven animal organizations are building a community of MEL peers and practitioners through Slack and monthly meetings Our interventions are in the ideation phase with a focus on learning if, and why or why not, they work as intended. Although we are still in the first half of our pilot program, we see some early successes. The training and coaching sessions helped staff members increase their knowledge of MEL design theories of change identify key assumptions and risks unify the collective understanding of their programs. As a result, several organizations identified key activities they wish to add to their program, decided to focus their efforts on specific target groups, or otherwise change their program design. Over the centuries, countless men and women have dedicated their lives to the protection of animals, and their legacy is honored in the form of statues, plaques, fountains, parks, benches, monuments, poems, organizations, stories, and memories. In today's podcast episode, I continue our journey into the stories of remarkable individuals who pioneered the modern-day animal protection movement in the United States — the lives and legacies of these compassionate trailblazers who tirelessly fought for the welfare and rights of animals. Because there is so much to say, this episode is just the first part of two!  Collectively, this duo of episodes will celebrate unsung heroes and iconic figures; look at the challenges they faced and the victories they achieved; and contemplate the lasting impact they made on animal advocacy.  AND, as we journey through history, we discover the monuments and memorials dedicated to these extraordinary advocates and their contributions to creating a more compassionate world. —————— Support this podcast today at JoyfulVegan.com/Donate Visit my website: JoyfulVegan.com Join me on an all-inclusive vegan trip: JoyfulVeganTrips.com AFFILIATE PARTNERS: Nama Juicer — Use this link and coupon code COLLEEN10 and get 10% off my favorite juicer. A widely watched case pitting animal welfare advocates against a Fortune 500 company has come to a conclusion and the results could have far-reaching implications in how the courts view the concept of “theft” versus “rescue.”In 2017, two members of an animal rights group called Direct Action Everywhere (or, DxE) were investigating conditions for pigs being raised for slaughter at Circle Four Farms, a Utah-based factory farm owned by Smithfield Foods. While on site, the two men – Wayne Hsiung  and Paul Picklesimer  – reportedly discovered two newborn piglets they determined to be sick and dangerously underweight. They then removed the piglets, took them for veterinary care, and transferred them to an animal sanctuary. When the incident was discovered, the two men were charged with felony burglary and theft and were facing up to five and half years in prison pending the results of their trial. In what's being viewed as a huge victory for opponents of animal cruelty, a jury has unanimously agreed that the two men be acquitted for their actions, with legal experts suggesting this could lay the groundwork for a legal “right to rescue” – establishing a difference between what took place and what would be considered theft. The pig rescue operation reportedly occurred during an attempt by DxE to verify whether Smithfield had ceased to use highly-criticized “gestation crates” that were too small for pregnant pigs to turn around in. They contend they did find these, despite Smithfield pledging to no longer use them at Circle Four. Throughout the course of this, the men from DxE say they also found dead and sick piglets, including the two in question – who they named Lilly and Lizzie.

We're thrilled to introduce you to photographer extraordinaire Doug Gimesy in this week's episode. Doug is a professional conservation and wildlife photojournalist who focuses on Australian issues. A Senior Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP), his clients include National Geographic, BBC Wildlife, bioGraphic, Australian Geographic, Audubon, as well various mastheads like The Guardian and NewsCorp. Initially trained as a zoologist and microbiologist, he later completed a Masters of Environment and a Masters of Bioethics. Together, these two qualifications helped shape his thinking as what type of issues he should be focusing on and why – conservation and animal welfare issues. Believing people should focus on the issues they care about and those that are close to home, his recent work has focused on the conservation and animal welfare issues facing the platypus and the Grey-headed Flying-fox – having recently facilitated the platypus being listed as threatened species in his home state of Victoria, as well as launching a children's book with his partner on Grey-headed Flying-foxes titled ‘Life Upside Down'. Current on-going projects include covering the illegal reptile trade out of Australia, the use of scent dogs in conservation and a series of portraits called 'Wildlife Warriors, Conservation Champions and Animal Advocates'. April Lang on Staying Curious & Being Vegan for the Animals

We hear about "going plant-based" for health all the time — it's probably up there with the Keto Diet as the biggest dietary trend right now, and The Economist called 2019 the year of the vegan. The environmental impact of eating meat and dairy has started to gain more traction in the media as well, with numerous recent studies agreeing that ditching animal products from your plate is the single biggest way to decrease your impact on the earth. But if you're like I was until a couple years ago and don't happen to run in the same circles with many animal activists, there's not as much discussion in mainstream media about the animal rights side of veganism. In this episode with my guest April Lang, we each share about why we decided to go vegan — not just with our diet, but also our overall lifestyle choices. As I mention in the intro, it's very important to me that anyone listening knows that I am not judging them for their food choices. There is plenty I do on a regular basis that is "judgeworthy," but I certainly hope that others give me grace for the things I am still learning and working on. There are many different causes and issues to spend your limited time and energy on (animal activism being just one), and we need all stripes of people committed to all different kinds of social and environmental justice work to keep moving the planet in the right direction. About April Lang, LCSW, SEP April is a psychotherapist in New York City, Certified Humane Education Specialist, and author of the book, Animal Persuasion: A Guide for Ethical Vegans & Animal Advocates in Managing Lief's Emotional Challenges. She also writes the column, "The Relational Vegan" for the online magazine La Fashionista Compassionista, and is a Certified Humane Education Specialist. In addition to working with ethical vegans in her private practice, she does couples counseling and helps individuals through life transitions, animal bereavement, and trauma. She also runs support groups for vegans and those who have lost an animal family member.
