In this episode, we wrap up our exploration of Nikkatsu's legendary Roman Porno series for the time being. For our last pick, Jason has selected a surprisingly relevant film blending together elements we examined in the prior two episodes. So join us as we check out Norifumi Suzuki's wild Star of David: Beautiful Girl Hunter from 1979. Dustin tries to weave the connected elements between all three films for this block while marveling at the vague profundity of the film. Jason, however, tries to articulate why the movie just falls a little short of having that special something to it. But before all that, we weigh in on Netflix's One Piece and the current state of live action anime adaptations. And so much more! The Super Bowl is over and done with, so you know what that means. Trailers!!! This year's batch had some good ones, but we were disappointed on a number of levels. From our fear of QR codes to trailers basically being a clip show, we have a lot of concerns. We also talk about the prospect of a three hour John Wick movie, and our guesses for who Ghostface will be.You do not have to watch Lady Snowblood for too long before seeing the influence on Quentin Tarantino. There are many shots from Kill Bill that are shot for shot homages to the 1973 film. Aside from casting a long shadow, it is also incredibly stylish and filled with a surprising amount of nuance and characterization. It is not just for the cinematography and awesome lead character it is remembered, however. The film is incredibly violent and will surprise audiences with just how graphic the brutality can get. TRIGGER WARNING: Lady Snowblood has scenes that contain sexual violence.Because of our ages, the 1980s are the Golden Age of Horror to us. For better and worse, this means we will be drawn to 80s inspired horror movies. Set in 1987, She Came from the Woods is about a group of camp counselors who decide to have a ritual as a joke one night. You can guess what happens next.We talk about the thin line between being an homage, a spoof, and just being derivative. She Came from the Woods does a great job of using 80s horror cliches mixed with modern storytelling, but there was one thing it completely whiffed on. B-horror can get away with a lot, but did this film go too far?Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Directed by Norifumi Suzuki, starring Reiko Ike and Christina Lindberg. Tangents include crying in barns, fun on logging roads, the tyranny of siblings, the invention of glitter nail polish, over-plucked eyebrows, lazy 70's costuming, nuns with knives, nudists & more! * You may notice an occasional chime in the background due to the recording software we're using... oh and some dog barks... oh and some wild keyboard tapping ... please forgive us!

Hey there! Remember that time we all learned about the birds and the bees from John Lithgow in the back of a bitchin' van in Montreal? What's that, you don't? Well, cram this new JFD in your ears and see if it jostles the old memory banks. Up first! It's 1975's A Haunted Turkish Bathhouse! This creep-filled feature tracks the exploits of an abusive dude at the wildest whorehouse in town, at least until the scariest cat of all time shows up. But is it more of a Roman Porno or a Pinky Violence movie? Does it even matter? We hope you like Japanese nipple torture scenes outside of your Ghoul Summer movies as much as you like them together. Next up! You've tasted the popular perfume, now take a swig of the less-popular Brian De Palma film. We're gabbing of course about Obsession, from 1976. This is the one he directed after Phantom of the Paradise - you know, the very Hitchcock-y movie he dragged Vilmos Zsigmond to Italy for? We got lots of thoughts on all these twisty turns the movie makes. Finally! Of course, it's 1979's Pinball Summer (aka Pick-Up Summer). Another entry in our long line of reviews about obscure teen sex comedies, this one has the distinction of featuring the fifth male lead from My Blood Valentine and some unremarkable locations shoots in Montreal, Canada. Crank this review while driving down the street in your bubble-windowed vans. All this plus The Great Parker Bowman Swindle, the Chinese Superman, A Needle-drop Nightmare on Fear Street, a really big announcement, Blockbuster Night: 1999 Edition, time's up: Steve Zahn, gladitorial mix-ups, verified butthole pleasures, the van with the wiener painted on it, a revelation about the famous wall-peeing party (or was that on the boner episode?), nerd news and even more! SEX & FURY (1973) is more properly known as 'Story of Delinquent Female Boss: Ocho' and is a prime example of the Pinky Violence genre. Although Troy and I are both curious about this strange Japanese variation on the revenge film we have had very little exposure to it. Luckily our occasional podcasting buddy Jason chose this fine period action tale to cover giving us the opportunity to dig into one of the best of the type. I guess you could say we came for the naked swordfight and stayed for the compelling story of intertwining vengeance plots. The film stars two of the most recognizable female leads of violent cinema circa the early 1970's. The first is Japanese actress Reiko Ike as the titular Ocho. As the movie begins in 1905 she is a woman seeking three people responsible for the murder of her father decades before. She is getting closer and now knows that each one has an identifiable animal tattoo that will point her to the guilty parties. Adding to the complexities is American gambler and spy Christina (played by Swedish beauty Christina Lindberg) who is being forced by her military controller to push Japan into a second Opium War. But Christina is conflicted because her actions might cause her Japanese lover to be caught and killed in his quest to assassinate a nasty politician. Confused yet? Wait until you hear us take a dozen sidetracks as we go through this one! The show can be found at The Bloody Pit of Rod or on iTunes or Stitcher.
