For the first time, Dustin and Logan are doing a special Sharktoberfest/Halloween crossover episode by watching a movie where a zombie fights a shark. And this ain't no CG nonsense. This is a man in full zombie makeup, underwater, wrestling a real dang shark. That's the kind of stuff they were doing in Italy in the 70s. Zombie, aka Zombi 2- the movie so nice they named it twice- is a cult hit from Italian gore legend Lucio Fulci that was released in Italy as a sequel to Dawn of the Dead and brought voodoo back into the zombie genre. There's a lot to unpack here and the boys are sipping on Indeed Brewing's Oktoberfest to keep them fueled for breaking down a convoluted, yet strangely slow piece of horror history. They also talk about Bar Rescue for a little bit. Happy Halloween!

On this spooky season edition of Parallax Views, film historian Troy Howarth, author of such books as So Deadly, So Perverse: 50 Years of Italian Giallo Films, Assault on the System: The Nonconformist Cinema of John Carpenter, Splintered Visions: Lucio Fulci and His Films, Murder by Design: The Unsane Cinema of Dario Argento, The Haunted World of Mario Bava, and the new Make Them Die Slowly: The Kinetic Cinema of Umberto Lenzi, joins us for a wide-ranging conversation about horror movies. Among the topics covered: - How Troy got into horror through the Hammer Studios' horor movies of the late 1950s through to the 1970s. These films starred such actors as Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing and centered around classic monsters like The Mummy, Frankenstein's Monster, and Count Dracula - Why Troy doesn't like the "cheesy" description when it comes to older movies; especially when said movies are deliberately infused with comical elements - John Carpenter's Halloween and the dark side of suburbia; Carpenter's films in the context of the Vietnam War and Watergate; the rebellious nature of Carpenter's filmography - Similarities between horror and comedy as genres; the art of the jump scare; the label "elevated horror" and the problems with it - Explaining the term "Euro-Horor" and why Troy doesn't like the term "Euro-Trash" to describe such movies; the history of the Italian murder mystery aka giallo and it's relationship to film noir, whodunits, and the German krimis written by Edgar Wallace; psycho-sexual themes in the giallo; the pulp vibe in Italian gialli; the effect of WWII and fascism on Italian filmmakers like Dario Argento; the politics of Italian horror movies (are they left-wing or right-wing?); Dario Argento's latest movie Occhiali Neri (Dark Glasses) and it relevant social themes in the post-COVID era - Violence and women in the Italian giallo; the complex portrayal of women in the Italian gialli; Argento's collaborator Daria Nicolodi and her importance to films like Suspiria; accusations that Lucio Fulci's films are misogynistic; the decadence of the upper class or bourgeoisie in Italian horror movies -The jazz stylings of the controversial Spanish filmmaker Jess Franco and how living under the dictatorship of Gen. Francisco Franco influenced his films; sympathy and perversion in regards to women in Jess Franco's films - Analyzing the political subtext of Dario Argento's Profondo Rosso aka Deep Red starring David Hemmings and (slightly) futuristic Tenebrae - The ecological sentiment of Mario Bava's Twitch of the Death Nerve and Bay of Blood; the importance of Mario Bava's horror films and his giallo Blood and Black Lace; Mario Bava's Boris Karloff-starring Black Sabbath and the difference between the more subversive European cut (with sexual subtext) and the American International Pictures cut of the film; continental horror films of the mid-20th century were aimed at adults whereas many American horror films were aimed at youth and teenagers - Ruggero Deodato, the director of Cannibal Holocaust - Dario Argento's The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and the explosion of the giallo on the silver screen And much, much more!

We start the show with talk of the Naked Gun movies and Police Squad. Leslie Nielsen made the role of Frank Drebin his own. Liam Neeson is a great actor, but can he step into the shoes of the iconic character? And what does any of this have to do with The Simpsons?Blake and Regina had a great idea few weeks ago to talk about upcoming genre movies. It is was a great idea and, frankly, is something we should have been doing for a long time. So, this week we are debuting a new segment on the show. This week we talk about Genre of the Future! For our first installment, we talk the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, whether Halloween will truly end, and the greatest horror movie moments. For the first time ever, we have a repeat review on our show. The last time we did Deadstream, Blake was not able to join us. Since the show recently debuted on Shudder, we figured this would be a great time to rectify that. We talk about having love for your craft, the importance of simplicity and horror, and uncharismatic influencers. It is not often that a movie leaves us speechless. We may be baffled, confused, or frustrated, but we always have something to say. And then we watched Project Wolf Hunting. The South Korean movie is about a group of dangerous criminals being transported on a giant cargo ship. Naturally, they escape. It sounds like Korean Con Air on a boat, and it is for a while. It soon becomes something so different that we had no idea what to think about. What we were both sure of is that it is easily one of the goriest movies in recent memory. We talk about when enough is too much, try to figure out what the film is going for, and try to decide if the body count is closer to 50 or 60 people dead.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Split Picks chose to focus on Italian horror directors for this year's October Horror series mainly because of their penchant for convincing practical gore effects. That's where Lucio Fulci comes in. Known as the "Godfather of Gore," Fulci's films relish every drop of blood, pierced eyeball and regurgitated organ. Fulci is best known for his films Zombie, The Beyond, and the Gates of Hell trilogy — City of the Living Dead, The Beyond, The House By The Cemetery. His work extends across decades and genres, but horror is where he crafted his most unforgettable moments. With Frankie Vanaria leading the portion on 1981's The House By The Cemetery and Bennett Glace taking us through the depths of Fulci's mind for 1990's Cat In The Brain, Split Picks looks at two films from the director that operate in different frames of mind. Cemetery follows a family in Massachusetts as they uncover secrets buried in their house. Cat In The Brain stars Fulci as a version of himself in which the awful images from his films have begun to haunt him — but can a career in horror actually make someone a murderer? In addition to the highs and lows of Fulci's style, Bennett, Craig, and Frankie also discuss bad haircuts and dubbing, Cat In The Brain's confusing reputation, and Bennett reveals a years-long prank he pulled on another podcast — and missed the opportunity to monetize.

It's time for a new series here on Cinema Shock! This week, we kick off a multi-part series of episodes celebrating and exploring the work of Sam Raimi. Raimi, of course, has spent the better part of the last two decades as the director of tentpole summer blockbusters, but he began his career as the director of down and dirty horror films that blended the comedy of the Three Stooges with the gore of Lucio Fulci. In this episode, we'll explore Raimi's early career, from his childhood in Michigan, all the way through the tumultuous filming and release of his debut feature, THE EVIL DEAD! Theme Song: "There's Still a Little Bit of Time, If We Hurry and I Mean Hurry" by Slasher Film Festival Strategy. Your Stupid Minds takes advantage of the Criterion Channel doing our curation for us by choosing a spook-em-up in its 80s horror series: another Lucio Fulci movie, it's 1981's The House by the Cemetery! Dr. Norman Boyle (played by the incredibly Italian Paolo Malco) his wife Lucy (Catriona MacColl) and their cherubic, etherial son Bob (Giovanni Frezza) move temporarily into a creepy New England house so the dad can do research or something. Over time it turns out this creepy house is, like, really creepy. Bob is clued in by another cherubic, etherial child Mae (Silvia Collatina) warning him against going to the house. A series of gruesome, Fulci-style murders later (not counting the one in the cold open that has nothing to do with anything), and Norman is determined to save his family from this malevolent force.

PUSSYCAKE Director, Pablo Parés [Episode 92]

Pablo Parés is an Argentinian filmmaker who's worked on over 15 movies as director or producer. His films include I am Toxic, Plaga Zombie, and Damonium: Soldier of the Underworld. His latest feature Pussycake is a rollicking good time. It's been called Josie and the Pussycats meets Evil Dead, and it delivers on that promise.  The movie mixes equal parts Peter Jackson zombie insanity with creature effects and tons of blood, guts, and vomit along the way. The movie is very stimulating visually and punches way above its weight as a low-budget feature. You can stream Pussycake right now on Screambox.  Pablo was a lot of fun to talk to. We got into his director origin story, the background on how he got Pussycake off the ground, and the infrastructure of filmmakers he's built that allows him to consistently make the movies he wants to make without any studio interference.  Without further ado, here is the mind behind Pussycake, Pablo Parés.  Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Pablo.  Think infrastructure. Pablo has a group of people who he's been making movies with for years. Most of them do a ton of different jobs, but they have similar tastes and the same mission, so every time they're ready to make a movie, they can lock and load and get it made because they not only have a shorthand working relationship with each other but they have an infrastructure. Also, every time they sell one movie, they use those funds to make the next movie. This is a self-sustaining, self-feeding ecosystem that ultimately allows Pablo and his team to do what they want. It took him a long time to create, but it's never too late to start nourishing your own filmmaking collective and your own infrastructure. Regardless, it's important to build relationships with people who want to make the same kind of crazy shit that you do.  Lean into limitations. On Pablo‘s previous movie, I am Toxic, he couldn't afford contact lenses for his zombie eyes, so he created a type of zombies that were so dry they didn't have eyes. This gave them a very cool aesthetic comparable to Lucio Fulci's Zombie - this is the approach he took throughout the movie, which allowed him to make a post-apocalyptic wasteland on an extremely low budget. This is an example of a filmmaker working with his budget as opposed to against it. When you work with your budget, your movie feels a lot more cohesive, intentional, and you can get away with so much more to serve your production value.  Make everything intentional. Pablo said that he notices a lot of monotony in newer horror movies that look the same and have the same tone, which is absolutely true. He went on to say that lot of filmmakers don't even think about distinguishing the look and feel of their films which is causing these movies to become homogenized and all feel very similar. As a director, every choice you make in a movie should have an intention behind it, nothing should be happenstance. Don't get too precious, and don't be a dictator, but realize that your job as a director is to direct, every single last detail. Jordan Peele does an exquisite job of this, as did Stanley Kubrick. Clearly, these are huge directors, but if you look at Pablo's work on Pussycake, he was able to do so much on a low budget, and his movie, his characters, and their costumes all had an iconic feel to them because he labored over each detail and made them his own.    Thank you for listening! We start this week's show with talk about some of the most iconic names in horror. Dario Argento has made some of the most influential movies in the genre. But when was the last time he made something memorable? Is a return to the subgenre that made him famous that right idea? This leads to a talk about Lucio Fulci. We talk about some of our favorite scenes from the Italian horror maestro. We thought we finally had found a faith based horror movie to cover. Sure, it was completely by accident, but it is not something you come across everyday. As it turns outs, The Harbinger is not coming to Pureflix anytime soon. The film is about a couple who move to a small town. Once they arrive, their neighbors start dying mysteriously. The Harbinger  is an interesting film that begins and ends with some of the most family friendliest horror seen in years. One of us described it as "the Omen made by Hallmark". In between, is a thriller that would fit perfectly on Lifetime. But there are also some great jump scares and fantastic atmosphere.  It is not devoid of fun, but is it worth watching?Old Man is the exact opposite. Lucky McKee's latest movie also has twists, but its narrative is straight and to the point. There are no tonal shifts or over the top characters. We talk about Stephen Lang's amazing performance, the risk of telling such a personal story, and what we though about the ending.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network.
