As part of Dario Argento's deal with Romero for Dawn of the Dead (known as Zombi in Italy), as well as Italy's lax sequel copyright laws, he was allowed to release a follow-up to that film. Known for its wormy zombie head poster, this movie is notorious for its gooey, effective gore. Does it actually connect to the Romero films? Will it make Stefan squeamish as hell? Let's get to it.

Ça fait quasiment deux ans qu'on n'a pas parlé de cinéma italien chez Jumpscare, pourtant un des cinémas horrifiques les plus appréciés et réputés parmi les fans du genre, deux ans depuis notre épisode sur Cannibal Holocaust, un épisode qu'on vous invite à aller écouter car, à en voir certains commentaires récents, il ne laisse pas tout le monde indifférent. Et on vous avait promis l'année dernière qu'on reviendrait sur le cinéma italien pour la saison 3 du podcast. Chose promise, chose due, nous voilà partis pour évoquer aujourd'hui un des grands films d'horreur du cinéma transalpin : le fameux L'Enfer des zombies, réalisé par le tout aussi grand réalisateur Lucio Fulci en 1979. Dans L'Enfer des zombies, lorsque le bateau d'un scientifique porté disparu dérive jusqu'au port de New York avec un zombie à son bord, la jeune Anne Bowles et le journaliste Peter West remontent sa trace jusqu'à une petite île reculée des Caraïbes : Matul. Sur place, ils découvrent que la population est décimée par une mystérieuse épidémie qui transforme les morts en créatures affamées de chair humaine. Aidés par un couple de touristes, un médecin dépassé par les événements qui refuse d'écarter l'hypothèse scientifique de ce qui se passe, et son assistant, qui pense lui que le vaudou est derrière l'épidémie, ils tentent de comprendre l'origine de cette malédiction et de fuir avant que l'île ne soit submergée par les zombies. Un maigre résumé qui camoufle en réalité des tonnes de scènes chocs ou totalement improbables, devenues cultes pour beaucoup de cinéphiles. Comme, par exemple, un combat aquatique entre un zombie et un requin. Et un vrai requin, pas un faux. Un œil qui se fait lentement transpercer par un bout de bois, des têtes explosées, des figurants enflammés, un plan final de malade tourné illégalement à New York… Bref, c'est un film qui ne recule devant rien pour en mettre plein les yeux du spectateur. Devin & James are back in the Den to bid a final "ciao" to the TOUR OF ITALY series with a look at the violent world of POLIZIOTTESCHI movies! (or Eurocrime, for the pronunciation challenged.) Italy had a special touch with crime thrillers during their politically tumultuous "Years of Lead," and we go over some of the genre's highest points, starting with Enzo G. Castellari's HIGH CRIME (1973), starring Franco Nero, and Franco Nero's mustache. We follow that with Lucio Fulci's only crime film, the gloriously bloody CONTRABAND (1980). Then we get into the sticky details around the release of Mario Bava's underseen and underrated RABID DOGS/KIDNAPPED, and why two different cuts of this movie were finally released over 20 years after the movie was shot and abandoned in 1974. We follow that with some fun in Umberto Lenzi's THE CYNIC, THE RAT, AND THE FIST (1977), which matched up 3 of the genre's most iconic stars (Milian, Merli, & Saxon). Finally, we cover the influential second entry of Fernando Di Leo's "Milieu Trilogy," THE ITALIAN CONNECTION (1972), where actor Mario Adorf outshines hitmen Henry Silva and Woody Strode to give the most heart-pounding and heartbreaking pimp performance we've ever seen. We're sad to finally be leaving Italy behind (for now), but we closed out with some of our favorite movies ever committed to celluloid. Buckle in and hold on for some off-the-wall Italian mayhem.

New Year's resolutions are a big thing for folks. Some want to lose weight, find a spouse, get a new job, work towards completing something; others have goals that they strive for. Co-host Mike said that there are a lot of genre films he hasn't seen that he wants to get to, so as a New Year's resolution, why not ask all the co-hosts to see some film they always wanted to see and then discuss. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are continuing out "Masters of Giallo" theme with the enjoyable and mysterious Lucio Fulci film, The Psychic (1977).This film was much more enjoyable than last week's Deep Red, with a narrative that was consistently engaging and a score and cinematography that wasn't constantly taking me out of the film. I gave this movie a 7.5/10 for doing exactly what it set out to do, and providing some fun twists and turns, even if the film itself felt sort of by the books for its genre.
