Hello and welcome listeners to Episode 291 of Journey with a Cinephile: A Horror Movie Podcast. In this episode, your tour guide, David Garrett Jr., goes back to bring in another Centennial Club for Episode #20. This sees Featured Reviews of Frewaka (2024) and The Bear's Wedding (1925). The former did festival rounds and was wide released for 2025. I also found a way to translate this Soviet film so I wanted to check it out. This makes for a folk horror double feature. I also got to see these films for Mini-Reviews: Drop (2025), Howling II: …Your Sister is a Werewolf (1985), Alice (1989) and Grafted (2024). Also, a documentary of Growing Up with I Spit on Your Grave (2019) and a book review of Uncanny Ireland: Otherworldly Tales of the Strange and Sublime. I hope you enjoy coming on this journey with me!Time Codes:Intro: 0:00 - 3:22Mini-Reviews: 5:08 - 29:28Frewaka Trailer: 29:29 - 31:19Frewaka Review: 31:19 - 40:25The Bear's Wedding Trailer: 40:25 - 43:21The Bear's Wedding Review: 43:21 - 54:10Outro: 57:52 - 1:04:04Promos:Shimmerwood Beverages: https://shimmerwood.com/discount/CINEPHILE1- Click this link for 30% off!Old Glory: https://oldglory.com/discount/CINEPHILE1- Click this link for 15% off!Social Media:Email: journeywithacinephile@gmail.comReviews of the Dead Link: https://horrorreview.webnode.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dgarrettjrTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/buckeyefrommichLetterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/davidosu/Instagram: davidosu87Threads: davidosu87Journey with a Cinephile Instagram: journeywithacinephileThe Night Club Discord: Journey with a Cinephile

Today we talk about moral panics. Specifically, the "Video Nasty" moral panic that happened in the UK in the early 1980s, and then again in the 1990s, when there was widespread fear that by kids watching horror movies with titles like Cannibal Holocaust, Flesh for Frankenstein, I Spit on Your Grave, and The Last House on the Left, they would literally be turned into rapists and killers. Was there any justification for this panic? Can hyper-violent or hyper-sexualized media in general erode the morality of children? Night of the Bloody Apes (1969), Don't Go in the House (1979), Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981) In 1984, in the U.K., the Video Recording Act was passed, which required certification of all video releases by the British Board of Film Classification, aka BBFC. This all came about due to a list of video titles that a group of various religious and other social groups run by the likes of Mary Whitehouse, deemed unsuitable to be viewed and thought for sure it would help corrupt the youth of England. The initial list had 72 titles on it, both films that had already been released after obtaining a BBFC certificate but now was deemed too offensive, as well as a whole bunch of other titles that were believed to fall under the obscenity law. If you own a shop that rented or sold one of these titles, you could be shut down, fined, and possibly even go to jail for it. And this all took place, not in the dark ages, but in the mid 1980s. Hard to believe it, especially growing up here in the U.S. Some of those titles have only recently gotten passed and released over in the U.K., even 40 years later. Blows the mind. In this episode, we discuss not only the whole Video Nasty era, but cover 3 films from that list, with each of us watching all 3 and see if we made it through without turning us into mindless deviants. Oops. Too late. Films mentioned in this episode: The Bat Woman (1968), Beast in Heat (1977), The Body Snatcher (1957), The Braniac (1962), The Burning (1981), Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981), Curse of the Crying Woman (1962), The Curious Dr. Hump (1969), Dead of Winter (1987), Doctor of Doom (1963), Don't Answer the Phone (1980), Don't Go in the House (1979), Don't Look in the Basement (1973), Don't Open Till Christmas (1984), Driller Killer (1979), Entrails of a Virgin (1986), Eyes of a Stranger (1981), Faces of Death (1978), Fear No Evil (1981), The Gestapo's Last Orgy (1977), Horror High (1973), I Drink Your Blood (1971), I Spit on Your Grave (1978), Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (1974), Maniac (1980), Mortuary (1982), Mother's Day (1980), Nekromantik (1988), New York Ripper (1982), Night of the Bloody Apes (1969), Perdita Durango (1997), The Prowler (1981), Psycho (1960), Roar (1981), Santo and Blue Demon vs. Dracula and the Wolf Man (1973), Santo and Blue Demon vs. the Monsters (1970), Santo vs. Frankenstein's Daughter (1972), Santo vs. the Head Hunters (1971), Santo in the Treasure of Dracula (1969),Santo in the Vengeance of the Mummy (1971), Shock Waves (1977), Silent Night Deadly Night (1984), Speed (1994), SS Experiment Love Camp (1976), Subspecies (1991), Suspiria (1977), Terrorvision (1986), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Twister (1996), Unhinged (1982), El Vampiro (1957), The Wresting Women vs. the Aztec Mummy (1964)
This week we're unlocking our patron vaults and giving everyone a taste of what you get when you become a subscriber. Mike, Brian, and Stephen joined forces to break down the Oz Perkins smash hit, and one of the most commercially and critically successful genre offerings of 2024. With Nic Cage as the titular serial killer, audiences could expect a wild ride, but what really surprised our crew was just how much of a homage this was to the psychological thrillers of the early 90s, and how at its core, just how much this is story about how far a mother will go to protect their daughter. If you like what you've heard this week, and want to unlock another 60 hours of bonus content (including Ariel's incredible and exclusive coverage of the I Spit on Your Grave franchise, Brian's upcoming series on the Nosferatu films, and later this year our look back at the Back to the Future trilogy) you can unlock bonus episodes by become a patron here: www.patreon.com/podandthependulum

Time Destroys Everything - Gaspar Noé's Irreversible We're closing in on our two final films in our "Dark Cinema" showcase. This week we look at Gaspar Noé's 2002 controversial and troubling film, Irreversible. Arguably one of the most difficult viewing experiences ever unleashed on movie-watching audiences, Noé's exploration on storytelling (a backwards playing narrative) could have easily been a gimmick with little to say in the way of exploring themes, however Noé deftly handles the obvious showboating of such a technique to add a true, honest, and enlightening understanding of his story of a brutal rape and beating, revenge, mistaken identity, and murder. This is not a film for the easily offended, but it's also not for those looking for the extreme violence and blood-lust of a Death Wish 2 or I Spit on Your Grave. With Irreversible, Noé has crafted a truly powerful and beautifully realized look at violence, sexual violence, and the unfolding of time and it's commentary on the aforementioned. Take a listen and let us know what you think. It's a deep and thoughtful conversation. We continue to be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com. Sun-Soaked Rape-sploitation: Coralie Fargeat's Revenge Sometimes a film fails, but the conversation it inspires is worth the viewing; That appears to be the case with this week's discussion of Coralie Fargeat's 2017 beautifully shot, thinly plotted, obvious and disappointing exploitation film, Revenge. Fargeat (director of last week's episode, The Substance) proves a capable, but limited story-teller. Mr. Chavez and I use Fargeat's film as a jumping off point to understand the rape and revenge genre with comparisons to I Spit on Your Grave, Death Wish (I & 2), and Kill Bill Vol. I & II. What was an unsatisfying and critically disappointing movie watching experience proved to be an interesting and challenging (for us, at least) discussion. We're hoping you share in our enthusiasm. Take a listen . . . we don't think you'll be disappointed. Many Thanks. One of the things we continue to preach on this podcast is learning about the people that are involved with the films we love. It helps you see more and understand more, about the person, as well as the final product they are involved with, whether they are an actor, makeup artist, or director. Author Joe Maddrey's recent book, The Soul of Wes Craven, from Harker Press, does just this, digging deep into the man, and shows us fans a lot more behind this Master of Horror than we might not have known. To help dig into Craven and his work, we invited Mr. Maddrey on the show to talk about his book and this highly influential filmmaker. Films mention in this episode: Act of Vengeance (1974), Alone in the Dark (1982), Angel Heart (1987), The Believers (1987), Chiller (1985), Deadly Friend (1986), Death Wish (1974), Dreamscape (1984), Frankenstein Unbound (1990), Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991), Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986), Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982), Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985), Ghost (1990), Hills Have Eyes (1977), Hills Have Eyes 2 (1984), The Horror Show (1989), I Spit on Your Grave (1978), Jacob's Ladder (1990), Last House on the Left (1972), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Red (2005), Scream (1996), The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988), Shocker (1989), Swamp Thing (1982), The Thing (1982), Together (1971), War of the Worlds (1953), Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)

Four decades on, and Fangoria is still one of the leading voices of horror culture. But in it's heyday in the 1980s, it was the gold standard. It wouldn't be an overstatement to say that Fangoria was the most important part of horror culture at that time. On this episode of Discover the Horror, we take a trip through Fango's history and discuss how it shaped out love of the genre, as well as speculating on how it shaped the genre as a whole. Movies mentioned in this episode: Accion Mutante (1993), Bad Taste (1987), The Beyond (1981), Brain Dead (1992), Conan the Barbarian (1982), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), The Fly (1986), Geek Maggot Bingo (1983), Godzilla (1954), I Drink Your Blood (1971), Intruder (1989), I Spit on Your Grave (1978), Motel Hell (1980), Puppet Master III (1991), Q (1982), Shriek of the Mutilated (1974), Star Wars (1977), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Videodrome (1982), Zombie (1979)

They then went on to tour the world with the likes of Anthrax, Hatebreed, and Chimaira. After only one album, "Sleep in Your Grave," released through Century Media, the band stopped touring and seemingly fell off the map. For the first time, Manntis frontman Jake Sirokman joins us to give the full story on what went down, and what he is doing now. Revenge is a dish best served bloody, hanged, and run over with a motorboat. The Dogs are joined by friend of the pod Chloé Harper Gold (writer, critic) for their analysis of the always controversial horror sub-genre of rape revenge. Starting off with the original I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE: is this an exploitation movie or could this actually be a feminist film masquerading as one? Then, join us next week for PART TWO where we analyze Coralie Fargeat's REVENGE (2017). . "Day of the Woman: A Feminist Look at I Spit on Your Grave" by Candy Allison and Erica.
It's another big hitter episode but not as we know it. Over the past year I have been putting this show together, knowing that time will be short for me come spooky season. So I compiled my favourite parts from the video nasty series of the top tier, successfully prosecuted films over on Patreon and have put them in order of my least favourite to the movie that I think is the best. All the nasties with a total of 19 guests, a silly amount of booze and the filthiest 39 movies that you ever would see.0.00 - Intro1.53 - I Spit on Your Grave (w/ Shea Mossefin)55.21 - House on the Edge of the Park1.11.46 - Tenebrae (w/ Brad Hanson)1.41.42 - Cannibal Man aka The Week of the Killer (w/ Dan Martin)2.21.07 - The Driller Killer (w/ John Tantalon)Between the interview segments there are various clips from an incredibly important documentary which is actually an episode from the BBC series 'Open Space' in which the public made programmes under their own editorial control. It's an episode called 'Suitable for Viewing in the Home?' from 1984. This gives some detailed context to pretty much all the conversations for this episode.

Let's face it: horror fans are, as a group, a little bit obsessive. When we sink our teeth into something we do not do it barely or easily, we take a big, honkin' bite. If we become infatuated with a director, we want to see every film they've made, read a book about them, hear people talk about them, watch documentaries about them, and so on. And the same is true for national horror cinemas, regional American horror cinemas, important eras, actors, subgenres, and the like. And in recent years, a handful of visionary producers of physical media have recognized an opportunity in our longing and have invented and are currently inundating us with boxed sets. These comprehensive, exhaustive, wonderful monsters have become a gravitational center point for our genre. But just a handful of years ago they mostly didn't exist, or were announced only every few years. Nowadays, we get several per year from companies like Severin, Vinegar Syndrome, Indicator, Arrow, and Scream! Factory, just to name a few. So we figured it was time for Discover the Horror to take a long look at the history and impact of these monolithic pieces of film history. Movies mentioned: 100 Years of Horror, Abby (1974), Alien (1979), Beast of Blood (1970), Beyond Dream's Door (1989), Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970), The Black Cat (1934), Blade in the Dark (1983), Blood of Ghastly Horror (1967), The Body Snatcher (1945), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Carnival Magic (1983), Carnival of Blood (1970), Cat People (1942), City of the Living Dead (1980), Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972), The Chooper (1971), Creature with the Atomic Brain (1955), Curse of the Cat People (1944), Dawn of the Mummy (1981), Day of the Animals (1977), Deathdream (1974), Demons (1985), Demons 2 (1986), Deranged (1974), The Devil-Doll (1936), Dracula (1931), Emanuelle in Bangkok (1976), The Eroticist (1972), Fiend with the Electronic Brain (1967), Final Exam (1990), Flesh for Frankenstein (1973), The Fly (1958), Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake (1959), Frankenstein (1931), Freaks (1932), Friday the 13th (1980), The Ghost Ship (1943), The Giant Claw (1957), The Godfather (1972), Godzilla (1954), Grizzly (1976), Gruesome Twosome (1967), Hellraiser (1987), Help Me . . . It's our season finale! What better way to celebrate than with Tom's favorite genre: the Rape-Revenge film! Starting off… Everyone knows the name! Everyone's afraid of it! Buster Keaton's granddaughter gets attacked by a gang o' long pubes in director Zierig Zurry Zoo-Zoo's I Spit on Your Grave. Next, things get heated when Dave and Tom throw down with their very different opinions on the controversial micro budget nasty Chaos (aka The Deadly Hostage) directed by David Defalco. Finally the cat fight carries over for some straight man realness in Blood Games by Tanya Rosenberg! A movie about tiddies, baseball and REVENGE! Also: Dave thinks it's 2002! Tom turns on his google machine! A bad grinder hook up! Too old for these movies! Camille Keaton gives great revenge! Tom declares legendary status! Dave has a helpful suggestion for the rapists! Tom thinks the nipples are on point! And titties, titties, titties, titties, titties, titties! Thank you to our loyal fans for 10 great episodes! We'll see you soon for season 2 - just in time for Halloween! Please help support the podcast! From wiki: “Liquid Sky is a 1982 American independent science fiction film directed by Slava Tsukerman and starring Anne Carlisle and Paula E. Sheppard.[1] It debuted at the Montreal Film festival in August 1982 and was well-received at several film festivals thereafter.[2] It was produced with a budget of $500,000. It became the most successful independent film of 1983, grossing $1.7 million worldwide.[3]The film is seen as heavily influencing a club scene that emerged in the early 2000s in Brooklyn, Berlin, Paris, and London called electroclash.[4]” Also! Lee and Leah start off Halloween season in style, by going super hard and covering the Meir Zarchi-directed "I Spit on Your Grave" (1978) and its 2010 remake, directed by Steven R. Monroe, with friend and fellow podcaster Cort Psyops. The hosts do their best to do a thoughtful deep dive into the more serious aspects of these two rape/revenge films, being respectful of the subject matter, while still trying to have as much of a fun conversation as possible, as they compare and contrast the two films. The hosts also talk about what they've watched recently. Avoid canoes, bathtubs and nooses, and come join us won't you? CAUTION/TW: Both films being discussed contain depictions of Sexual Assault.Cult Cinema Showdown returns with Abel Ferrera's Ms .45 vs Meir Zarchi's I Spit on Your Grave. These highly controversial movies cover the sexual assault of their respective protagonists and their subsequent revenge against those responsible. I Spit on Your Grave is considered by many to be the "peak" of the rape/revenge subgenre of Exploitation films, becoming a catalyst for the Video Recordings Act, and was branded a "Video Nasty" in the United Kingdom. Ms .45 takes inspiration from films such as Thriller-A Cruel Picture and Taxi Driver, even being called "The female Death Wish" by many who have seen it. Who will win this week's showdown?
