With a catalogue as extensive as INXS', there was bound to be moments in time when certain songs captured the zeitgeist attention of the music buying public and critics. Look no further than January 28th, 1988 when a humble hard working sextet from Australia hit number one on the Billboard Charts with Need You Tonight. A song, that now, sounds so familiar, crisp and radio friendly but then, a new modern twist on funk, soul and pop with sound production so cutting edge, every breath, ooh and aah sounded like Michael Hutchence was singing it to you directly from your living room. Combined with an innovative, breathtaking and cutting edge video clip, Need you Tonight put INXS into the stratosphere of superstardom and success. MTV awards ensued, world tours were booked and the album Kick had the necessary momentum to spawn 4 subsequent hit singles and international acclaim. Five years later in February 1993, a less prominent and commercially successful track was released as the fifth single to Welcome to Wherever You are, namely Beautiful Girl. A self-penned track by Andrew Farriss as an ode to new fatherhood, this restrained, mellow and resonant song showcased a maturity, subtlety and consciousness to both the INXS writing and recording process. Charting steadily if not spectacularly, the film clip by Mark Pellington of U2 and Pearl Jam fame would garner a Grammy nomination for Best Video of the Year losing out to Peter Gabriel's “Steam” clip. That aside, the social conscious messaging of the clip resonated nicely with the lyrical content whilst Michael's channeling of Lou Reed, circa The Velvet Underground era only added to its worthiness. So sit back and reminisce as we step back in time and honour two distinct but two important songs in the INXS catalogue that still resonate 37 and 32 years later respectively.
On May 14th, 1907, Heinrich Pressler, Chief Engineer was found dead in the room he rented in Chemnitz, Germany. It was at first ruled as a suicide, but the case was soon re-opened and suspicion fell on his fiance, Grete Beier. Unpeel the layers of this disturbing case by diving into a murderer's mind with us. Now that this is my last Sunday with you, it's time for me to tell you my real name, because in so many ways, our name defines us, roots us in this world, gives us our identity. My real name isn't the name that my parents put on my birth certificate and that I was called at my baptism. It's the name my grandmother gave me when I was born. My father's mother, Ah Yun, was the name-giver for the Chin family. An ancient Chinese saying goes, "The family is essential under Heaven." The family is the foundation, the center of Chinese culture, with the male child responsible for continuing the family lineage and, importantly, passing on the family name. So girls are traditionally not valued. But the birth of the first child, male or female, is always an occasion for celebration and joy. So when my parents' first child was born, a girl, Ah Yun named her Mei Li, meaning "Beautiful Daughter." Girls are often named lovely names like that--Coral Flower, Beautiful Girl, Lustrous Pearl, and so on. I think it makes the girl more appealing when the time for marriage comes along.
Hi, everyone. My name is Madison. You've probably noticed already that something seems off about me? It's all my leg's fault. I lost it, and now I have to use a prosthesis. Of course, my life changed after the accident. But you have no idea just how much.

INXS: Access all Areas listeners were given a unique treat last week that being Part One of Mark Pellington whose industry credits go far beyond the Beautiful Girl video. Left with a cliffhanger as Mark escalated his frustration upon hearing INXS were not in fact, in the Rock Hall of Fame, we share in Part two's deep dive what that phone call entailed! Additionally, Mark opens up about how a personal family tragedy informed his artistic expression particularly in the year new millennium as he was increasingly chased by emerging artists such as The Fray, Keane, Kings of Leon, The Flaming Lips and The Dave Matthews Band. We get to hear Mark's interesting foray into acting much at the behest of iconic filmmaker Cameron Crowe (eg. Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous). Plus continued admiration for the musicianship and excellence of INXS and how working with true superstars such as Michael Hutchence and Bono affected Mark as a Director. All that and a whole lot more as we for the rarest of times, welcome a secret third wheel to the hosting duties all the way from Ottawa Canada! Famed USA Video, Film, Doco and TV Director, Mark Pellington joins INXS: Access all Areas to dive deep on his fantastic video for 1993 INXS single “Beautiful Girl” amidst many other broader conversations. Having gotten his start via MTV in 1983, Mark was at the forefront of when the video clip explosion was at the epicenter of the watching audience zeitgeist. Working initially with artists such as Leonard Cohen, De La Soul and PM Dawn, it was his future work with Pearl Jam's “Jeremy” video that brought Mark's unbridled talents into the forefront of the music industry heavy hitters. As such, he went on a peerless run Directing for U2 (One), Public Enemy (Shut em Down), REM (Drive), Alice In Chains (Rooster) plus Springsteen, Keane, The Flaming Lips and obviously our beloved INXS. Interestingly, it was INXS that would bring him his sole Grammy nomination eventually losing out to Peter Gabriel's “Steam” video (Urghhhh). Mark generously opens up how personal grief informed much of creative ideas and we get to dive deep on his work with other artists, feature films and his love of the Australian music industry culminating a cliffhanger moment regarding INXS' lack of recognition by the Rock Hall of Fame Committee that shall leave you clamouring for an early release of Part Two. So sit back and enjoy the iconic words of Mark Pellington. https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com/

In this episode, we wrap up our exploration of Nikkatsu's legendary Roman Porno series for the time being. For our last pick, Jason has selected a surprisingly relevant film blending together elements we examined in the prior two episodes. So join us as we check out Norifumi Suzuki's wild Star of David: Beautiful Girl Hunter from 1979. Dustin tries to weave the connected elements between all three films for this block while marveling at the vague profundity of the film. Jason, however, tries to articulate why the movie just falls a little short of having that special something to it. But before all that, we weigh in on Netflix's One Piece and the current state of live action anime adaptations. And so much more! Everything I'm about to share with you happened in England and France during the lifetime of Thomas Jefferson, while America still had its “new baby” smell. The English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge gave us “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” in 1798, while Napoleon sailed to Egypt to fight the Battle of the Pyramids and famously discover the Rosetta Stone.Coleridge died of heart failure due to his opium addiction.Wordsworth gave us “The Rainbow” in 1802, while the people of France enthusiastically approved a new constitution that elevated Napoleon to dictator for life.Wordsworth died of a lung infection.Shelley gave us “Ozymandias,” the tale of a fallen and forgotten emperor, in 1818, while Napoleon languished in exile on the island of Saint Helena in the Atlantic.Shelley died in a boating accident at the age of 29.Keats gave us “La Belle Dame sans Mercy” in 1819, while Napoleon continued to languish on Saint Helena.Keats died of tuberculosis at the age of 25.“Le Belle Dame sans Mercy” in English means “The Beautiful Girl without Mercy,” but you and I know her as Fame and Fortune. You've often heard the names of Coleridge, Wordsworth, Shelley, and Keats, but did you know that each of these English Romantic poets was inspired by an imaginary 15th-century monk named Thomas Rowley? But imaginary through he was, Thomas Rowley re-ignited the flames of romantic literature in England during the colorful years that he lived in the mind of an adolescent boy in poverty. That boy, Thomas Chatterton, was born 15 weeks after his father died in 1752, when Thomas Jefferson was just 9 years old. Napoleon would not be born for another 3 years.Little Thomas spent his days with his uncle, the sexton of the church of St Mary, Redcliffe, where he would crawl through the attic of that vast, ancient building, examining the contents of oak chests stored there since 1185, where documents as old as the War of the Roses lay forgotten.By the time he was 6, young Thomas Chatterton had learned his alphabet from the illuminated capitals of those documents. By the time he was 11, Thomas had become so well-versed in the language and legends of earlier centuries that he began sending poems to “Felix Farley's Bristol Journal,” claiming they were transcribed from the writings of a monk named Thomas Rowley who had lived 300 years earlier.Aside from the hundreds of poems written by this imaginary monk, Chatterton wrote political letters, song lyrics, operas and satires in verse and in prose. He became known to the readers of the Middlesex Journal as Decimus, a rival of Junius, that author of the forever infamous Letters of Junius. Chatterton was also a contributor to Hamilton's Town and Country Magazine, and the Freeholder's Magazine, political publications supportive of liberty and rebellion. While the brilliant submissions of Thomas Chatterton were happily accepted by editors across England, he was paid little or no money for them.On the 17th of April, 1770, 17-year-old Thomas Chatterton penned a satire he called his “Last Will and Testament.” In it, he hinted that he was planning to end his life the following day. That famous poem by John Keats, “La Bella Dame sans Mercy,” may well have been written with Thomas Chatterton in mind. For the beautiful, merciless girl in that poem is a fairy – let us call her Fame & Fortune – who makes love to a medieval knight in his dreams, then leaves him sick and dying on a cold hillside when she...
Sharon Tate's life, work, and death has had an outsized impact on American culture. Victims rights, parole procedures, and victim blaming as a women hating phenomenon are all part of her story. It is an important one for women who either have been a victim or will become a victim of a violent crime in her lifetime. Unfortunately that comprises a rather large swath of the female population. Her death was largely blamed on her, and by extensions the other victims present at her home on Cielo Dr. I do not talk about the details of the crime but instead discover what about her was magic, why its so touching, and how we can remember and honor her. The primary film I discuss is the 1967 film Valley Of The Dolls. Her full acting credits are listed below. I also discuss her wedding dress, the recent auction of that dress and Leslie Van Houten's many parole approvals. I go into why she hasn't been let out and the political consequences of setting her free. As of today it looks like she will finally have that chance. sources for this week's show include: Recollections- by Debra Tate, Karina Longworth's work on the Manson family and Sharon Tate, Helter Skelter- by Vincent Bugliosi, and nearly every Photoplay that ever mentioned Sharon, including the October 1969 article mentioned by name in the episode. Christmas in Our Hearts is the Philippines' bestselling album of all time, with its eponymous title song heralding the holidays every year on September 1. But for each of Jose Mari Chan's hits such as “Beautiful Girl” and “Please Be Careful With My Heart” are hundreds of other songs and compositions that failed. When he was a teenager, his father told him his voice was ordinary and to just make music his hobby and run the family business instead. He listened—and was a massive success in both. His hobby turned into a musical career that has lasted over five decades, throughout which his guiding motto has been “The blow that doesn't break me only strengthens me.”

I had the sheer joy & opportunity to sit down with actress and comedian, Tammy Tavares. We discussed her journey from a trailer park in Mishawaka, Indiana to Beverly Hills adjacent, including her colorful resume of strip clubs, sugar daddies and an unrealized career in hairdressing, which ultimately landed her in a stable marriage and later become the foundation for her comedy.Tammy's chaotic childhood made her well-prepared for a career in Hollywood. In addition to the 12 years she played Dr. Karen Bader on Days of Our Lives, Tammy has appeared on Two and a Half Men, Drop Dead Diva, Las Vegas, N.Y.P.D. Blue and General Hospital. Her film roles include Mike Nichols' What Planet Are You From?; Beautiful Girl with Brendan Sexton III and Fuel, which won the Grand Jury Award at the Lisbon International Film Festival and Best Experimental Film in Mexico City International Film Festival in 2007.After 20 years playing roles ranging from Doctors to Dominatrix, the stories of Tammy's white trash family roots told on the crisp, clean wool carpets of her Los Angeles condo were enough to push her to the stages of local open mics. Since then, Tammy has quenched her artistic thirst through tales of teenage parents, spending a year as a stripper hooked on Vicodin, and the toughest of all, being a wife.Tammy resides in 9021-almost with her handsome, Germanic husband, Mark and their two cream-colored chow chows Mr. Eazy & Zoey. A century ago, Sydney chorus girl Eve Gray won a beauty competition and shot to national fame. 'Australia's Most Beautiful Girl' was soon a theatrical leading lady. But Eve discovered that being a celebrity came with a dark side. Nevertheless, she was to persist with her performance career, winning critical respect on stage and screen, working with the likes of Alfred Hitchcock and Errol Flynn. Quand j'ai pensé à parler de Charlie Rich et de sa chanson « the most beautiful girl in the world », je me suis dit personne ne va s'intéresser à ça.

In this episode, I welcome Martia Wells, beauty influencer, mom blogger, and the founder of Go Beautiful Girl, to the guest chair. Go Beautiful Girl was birthed as a way to uplift herself while going through a ten-year struggle trying to conceive her son. She needed an outlet to share affirmations, encouragement, and her journey. After launching her blog, she did not realize the impact it would have on other women who shared similar stories. And since the launch, she has been able to build a supportive and loving community of women alike. As a Christian woman, she believes that words have power and speak life! One of her mottos is “What you speak over yourself can empower, uplift, and help encourage that beautiful girl on the inside to come out!”KEY TAKEAWAYS:• How to create a blog and share your story.• How the journey of Infertility can be a beautiful thing.• The meaning of “The Wait”. Staying still and trusting in God's timing.• Why time management is key to work-life balance.• How to build a Community.**This original recording of this episode took place in 2021.
