In this week's episode we explore the world of haunted or otherwise cursed Hollywood films which are quite a bit more numerous, violent and even deadlier than you would first imagine. In the free section of the show we discuss the weird monsters hidden in Return to Babylon, Ti West's Innkeepers and House of the Devil, The Amityville Horror remake, the Dybbuk of The Possession and of course the grizzly deaths associated with the curse of The Omen. In the extended show we go for all the heavy hitters and tell the tale of the misfortune's associated with The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Conjuring, Dark Water (along with some Los Angeles true crime history), the infamous tragedies that orbit Polanski's  Rose Mary's Baby and of course the deadly controversies surrounding Spielberg's Poltergeist. Along the way we also speculate about the occult principles which make haunted movies and cursed films even possible in the first place. Based on Finn's short film Laura Hasn't Slept (2020), the film stars Sosie Bacon as a therapist who witnesses the bizarre suicide of a patient, then goes through increasingly disturbing and daunting experiences that lead her to believe she is experiencing something supernatural. It also features Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Kal Penn, and Rob Morgan, as well as Caitlin Stasey reprising her role from Laura Hasn't Slept. A feature adaptation of Finn's short was announced in June 2020, and the cast was added in October 2021. Principal photography began that month in New Jersey and ended in November. Originally set for release on the streaming service Paramount+, distributor Paramount Pictures opted to release the film theatrically after positive test screenings. Smile premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 22, 2022, and was released in the United States on September 30. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed over $217 million worldwide on a budget of $17 million. A sequel, Smile 2, is scheduled to be released in October 2024. The Ring is a 2002 American supernatural horror film directed by Gore Verbinski and written by Ehren Kruger. Starring Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, and Brian Cox, the film focuses on Rachel Keller (Watts), a journalist who discovers a cursed videotape that causes its viewers to die seven days later. It is a remake of Hideo Nakata's 1998 film Ring, based on the 1991 novel by Koji Suzuki. The Ring was theatrically released in the United States on October 18, 2002, by DreamWorks Pictures. It was a box-office success, grossing $249.3 million worldwide on a $48 million budget, making it one of the highest-grossing horror remakes of all time. The Ring received mixed-to-positive reviews, with critics in particular praising the atmosphere and visuals, Bojan Bazelli's cinematography, Verbinski's direction and the performances of the cast (particularly Watts). At the 29th Saturn Awards, the film won in two categories: Best Horror Film and Best Actress (for Watts). The film is the first installment of the American Ring series, and is followed by The Ring Two (2005) and Rings (2017). The success of The Ring inspired American remakes of several other Asian and Japanese horror films, including The Grudge (2004) and Dark Water (2005). Plot Teenage girls Katie and Becca discuss an urban legend about a cursed videotape that causes whoever views it to die in one week. That night, Katie, who viewed it one week ago, is killed by an unseen force. At Katie's funeral, her mother asks her sister Rachel, a Seattle-based journalist, to investigate her daughter's death. Rachel discovers that Katie's friends all died in bizarre accidents at the same time as Katie's death. Rachel visits the Shelter Mountain Inn, where Katie and her friends saw the tape. She finds and views the tape; it contains strange and frightening imagery. She then receives a phone call from an unknown caller who whispers, "Seven days". Though initially skeptical, Rachel quickly begins to experience supernatural occurrences linked to the tape.

We are talking all about the latest X-Men cartoon up on Disney Plus. X-Men '97, a continuation of the 1992 animated series of what I would call the greatest generation of all time for animated series. Batman, Spider-man, Dragon Ball Z, Swat Kats, The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Pirates of Dark Water, The Simpsons, and X-Men just to name a few of the glorious shows from that early 90s era. Stories and animation were firing on all cylinders, making programing that appealed to a large audience beyond just kids. X-Men 1992 was such a huge deal to me as a kid, as it has been throughout my entire life. So, going into this new version is always going to be an interesting ride. All in all, they do a pretty good job here. With only a little bit of cluster in the certain section of the episodes. Mainly just jamming in too much but never anything that would be considered poor quality. This could be the new era turn around for the Marvel Disney world. Here's hoping X-Men is what gets the groove back in business. So, come on by and join us on another adventure of OMO Podcast. A dark, stormy night is when nature exerts its awesome power and all living things are subject to dread and anxiety- obviously a perfect setting for a horror movie. Jerry and Matt look at two very different examples of horror within a storm with Dark Water (2002) and The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016).

In the Crane County oil patch, a recent catastrophic spill of produced water, a toxic byproduct of the petroleum extraction process, has brought to the forefront the threat this stuff poses to groundwater across Texas. In this election year, it also highlights the worsening of that threat resulting from the chronic mismanagement and public obfuscation regarding produced water by the Texas Railroad Commission, the elected, three-member body supposedly in charge of keeping Texas' environment safe in the midst of our all-time high petroleum production, but in reality known as largely a rubber stamp for whatever policy and procedure our state's energy sector finds most expedient and profitable. On this episode, we talk to Bill Burch, petroleum expert and Progress Texas-endorsed candidate for the Texas Railroad Commission, as well as Alex Ortiz, Water Resources Chair of the Sierra Club's Lone Star Chapter on the Crane County produced water spill, the ramifications this gross stuff and its management have for our environmental future, and how the Commission should be held accountable. Horror, like comedy, is subjective and personal. What disturbs or horrifies one person can harmlessly bounce off another. Case in point is this weeks selection in the Month of Pete. Dark Water is hailed as one of the seminal examples of J-Horror from the early 2000s along with the likes of Ju-On and Ringu. The dread and madness of the film that delighted Troy and Pete fell completely flat for Charlie and Nate. Even though Charlie and Nate wanted desperately for this movie to speak to them, the film just didn't. It's not that they didn't "get" it, it just wasn't their cup of tea. Troy and Pete do sing the films praises and the entire gang was split down the middle. Dark Water is a slow burn that never really has a climax but rather an ending that you will need to decide for yourself if it's satisfying.
