In this episode, after feeling the vibes of 70s British Sci-Fi Horror from our prior film, Dustin tries to keep the ball rolling with a blind pick. Who could imagine what terrors await!? So join us as we wind the clock back a few more years to 1970 and head into the land of Amicus Productions to check out Scream and Scream Again. This is certainly one of the films in their catalog and we dig deep to find some merit in this hot mess of a film. But before all that, Jason picks back up reading and dishes on a newer Horror novel that he dug. Dustin runs down some recent watches, including sharing a lot of hype for a brand new Shudder Original. And so much more! In this episode, rising from the snowpocalypse, we make our triumphant return in the new year. We're kicking the year off as we usually do with a few free wheeling picks just for the heck of it. Jason heralds his return by selecting The Creeping Flesh directed by Freddie Francis from 1973. So join us as Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee clash on the big screen to deliver one of the most nonsensical, but fun, slices of sci-fi horror. And before all that, Jason recounts his trip to England, we celebrate the life of David Lynch with a small discussion, and dig in on some parting shots at 2024 as we circle back for a few films; most notably Nosferatu. In this special bonus episode of Genre Exposure, a Christmas miracle descends upon the podcast as Dustin wraps up his coverage of the Death Forest franchise. At four films in with mostly diminishing returns from an already low high, join our intrepid host as he discovers that the final entry actually packs the biggest punch of all. We've got new directors at the helm, a longer runtime, and somehow surprisingly better pacing to utilize that extra time to weave something entertaining that exceeds the other films in the series. But before all that, Dustin recounts his experience revisiting some of his favorite Christmas classics and then weighs in on The Creep Tapes now that season one has finished. All that and more! In this special bonus episode of Genre Exposure, Jason is on vacation and Dustin cracks open the J-Horror Journal once more. We pick back up right where we left off with Death Forest 4 directed by Yasutake Torii. We're chugging right along and that means more of what you can expect from this franchise by now: more Kazuki trying and failing to unravel the mystery of Yoshie and the denizens of the Death Forest. This entry picks up heavy on the remaining plot threads from the prior film and gives us a continuation of the series' vague Crystal Lake-like metaphor of having the action go down nearby to the central location where everything ought to be happening. Checking off the boxes of obvious horror sites, we get a hospital this time. But before all that, Dustin recounts some of his recent watchings, including a dip back into the Shaw Bros box set and a look at The Creep Tapes. All that and more! In this special bonus episode of Genre Exposure, continuing our tradition of having an extra episode drop on Halloween, Dustin cracks open the J-Horror Journal one last time this month to share with you three of his favorite urban legends from Japan and discuss some of the many films that have spawned from them. From a bathroom haunting ghost to a gorgeous lady with a smile to die for and finally a ritual far more elaborate than Bloody Mary and way too scary to attempt. You can expect a cavalcade of low budget horror flicks to follow in their wake as well. In this episode, we tackle one more discussion topic to keep the October Halloween celebrations going. In an era where reboots and revivals are running wild, we posed a simple question: What if beloved anthology horror series Masters of Horror returned for a third season? Our parameters were simple. Assume 13 episodes because the other two seasons had that many. We each take six picks to be as even as possible and tapped Michael to give us his number one suggestion to round out number 13. The major stipulation is that each filmmaker needs to have not already appeared in the prior two seasons of the show. Watch as we wade into the trenches fighting to honor those who may have missed out on the original show's run or staking the claim of master for more modern directors. How did we do? Who did we miss? We'd love to hear your thoughts too! But before all that, we dish on more of our horror watches for the Halloween season. And so much more! In this episode, we sit aside the movie deep dives to tackle a discussion topic in honor of the spooky season. And what better topic to discuss than the things that actually scare us. So join us as we get deep and share it all, highlighting five films that have really and truly scared us in our lives. The criteria were simple: the film had to legitimately scare us either when we first watched to the point it left some significant impact or still actually unnerves us today. And by scared, we specifically mean the type where you're still thinking about the film after. Jumpscares are fun, and we love them, but like a funhouse ride the moment is fleeting. Jason drills down on the origin of his preoccupation with child endangerment in film. Dustin unpacks his crippling fear of all things creepy crawly. But before all that, we dish on some of our October daily viewings and weigh in on Art the Clown's ascension to horror icon with Terrifier 3. And so much more! In this special bonus episode of Genre Exposure, it's the return of Dustin's J-Horror Journal! In an effort to ensure we continue having content every week in October, Dustin has taken to the mic solo to make up for the lost time of his recent illness and do what he does best: unhinged ranting about how cool J-Horror flicks are. Picking up right where we left off, join us as we check out Masataka Ichimi's Death Forest 2 from 2015, the next entry in the franchise based on an indie video game that itself was based on another prominent indie video game. In this episode, we get lost into the absurdly surreal world of Kiju Yoshida's Heroic Purgatory from 1970. Serving as Dustin's Lynchian avant-garde counter pick to our prior film, this one covers much of the same ground, focusing and drawing inspiration from the same student revolts that served as source material for Kichiku; only everything is a whole lot weirder. Jason finds appreciation in the film's liminal nature, but weighs that against the absurdity of the film's narrative. Dustin goes off the arthouse deep end, celebrating the film's many odd aspects. In this special bonus episode of Genre Exposure, we've had a bit of a scheduling crisis making Jason unavailable to record. So Dustin takes to the microphone solo to chat more about Japanese Horror. We've decided to spin the prior filler episode in this style into its own series that for now will crop up during emergency situations like this. For this official inaugural episode, Dustin chats about the 2014 flick Death Forest, which somehow spawned a four sequel franchise and draws inspiration from a killer little indie horror game. He chases down not only the history, but goes on a tangent about Slenderman after realizing the game's similarities to The Eight Pages. All that and more! With any luck, we shall return to our regularly scheduled program in the usual two weeks out. While this is mostly meant as filler, if you dig this and want to hear more of these, reach out and let us know. So join us as we dig in a little on our conflicting opinions about 90s Horror and finally discuss the Elm Street franchise for a little as we check out Wes Craven's New Nightmare from 1994. Jason charts the web of connections as this meta horror flick weaves reality with countless callbacks to the franchise. Dustin tries to weigh where the film succeeds against its failings. In this episode, we continue our exploration of movies about making movies. This time Jason's pick brings us back to the highly stylized world of Brian De Palma as we check out Blow Out from 1981. Between geeking out over all the gear porn and audio engineering, we also spend a lot of time highlighting the many cinematic features and real world incidents that fed in as inspiration for the film. But before all that, we set our sights on some recent releases. Jason hits the theater to talk Eli Roth's Grindhouse trailer finally being realized and then heaps praise for Toho's newest stab at a Godzilla flick. In this episode, we dig into the mailbag of listener suggestions seeking some horror to keep the dwindling flames of our Halloween passion alive. This leads us to check out Zach Cregger's directorial debut Barbarian from 2022. Heads up that this is a film where the less you know going in the better, so if you haven't seen it and have made it this far without being spoiled, we highly suggest trying it before delving into our discussion. Jason celebrates the film's thematic elements while Dustin struggles to reconcile the elements he loved with those that gave him a few hangups. In this special bonus episode of Genre Exposure, strapped for time but not wanting to abandon a holiday tradition, Dustin sits down solo to record some thoughts about the films he has watched over the month of October. This ultimately leads him to highlight a quartet of J-Horror flicks that became the stand outs from his daily watching for Halloween and sent him on a wild bender of watching more. While broadly discussing these four films, he also gives some general context on the mythology or urban legend underlying each movie. Nothing fancy or in depth, mostly some mad ramblings. In this episode, we once more begin our yearly celebration of the Halloween season. This time we're back with another helping of flicks set on or closely around Halloween itself. Jason starts us of with, unsurprisingly, a bit of kids in peril. So join us as we check out Samuel Bodin's Cobweb from 2023. We present two wildly different takes on the film as Jason champions the movie for embodying the spirit of classic Halloween horror gems of the 70s and 80s.
