In this special episode of Digital Gardening, Paul and Adam sit down with Renee Hobbs, Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Rhode Island and Founding Director of the Media Education Lab at URI's Harrington School of Communication. Dr. Hobbs' current project, Courageous RI, focuses on violence prevention via community-led discussions on such topics as "Feelings and Facts," "Conflict Entrepreneurs," and "Preventing Violent Extremism." All Courageous RI events are free, online, and open to the public. Our conversation in this episode spans several timely topics. We talk about the role of universities and colleges in repairing the epistemic divide and mitigating the hyper-polarization of our current moment, even as institutions of higher education (like all knowledge-producing institutions) are experiencing a crisis of confidence and lack of trust from the publics they serve. We discuss the rise of influencers and the concomitant decline in expert knowledge. And we explore the future of higher education and what must change--in terms of disciplinary siloing and incentive structures--for higher education to truly seize the gravity of our current postdigital moment. Thank you for listening to Digital Gardening. We hope you enjoy this podcast. Please reach out to us with your questions, feedback, and fan mail. You can reach us at dgi@iu.edu.

The world of gaming has long been highlighted as a hotbed of cultivation of extremist actors and activities, but more recently it's also started to be recognised as a platform where early intervention of extremism and encouragement of democracy and tolerance can be fostered. Alongside Galen Lamphere-Englund, Senior Advisor, Preventing Violent Extremism and Conflict at Love Frankie, we examine the complexities of gaming, uncovering the distinction between figures of influence, the role of violence, and how powerful gaming narratives can be harnessed as a force for positive change.

A group of survivors devastated by terrorism in the Lake Chad region of Africa, are taking small steps towards building new lives and livelihoods. In Cameroon alone, there are some 250,000 internally displaced people and around 100,000 refugees, forced to flee their homes due to a brutal insurgency which was originally led by Boko Haram – it's now splintered into a number of different extremist Islamist armed groups. In this West African country, men and women have been taught to produce artisanal goods for sale as a means to boost their meagre incomes. Meanwhile, young people are learning about the dangers of joining radical groups. In this special edition of our Lid is On Podcast, Daniel Dickinson reports from Maroua in the Far North region of the country. Music credit: Ketsa, Sad Moments

In this podcast, we suggest you show your children you understand them by talking their language. Send a gif today (and that's no spelling mistake!). Kids don't think the way we do. They are wired differently. Letters? Way in the past. Facebook? That's for old people! Even long text messages get ignored. Kids today talk in pictures and videos. If we talk to our children on their level, we are much more likely to keep them safe. You can learn more via our Preventing Violent Extremism program - https://clarionproject.org/pve/ In this podcast, Clarion's Shireen Qudosi explains talking in gifs in a little more detail. On the 21st of September the Federal Justice Minister and the Attorney General's department launched a booklet titled ‘Preventing Violent Extremism and Radicalisation In Australia'.The kit is directed towards young people, and those working with them, including schools. While the kit covers different types of violence and so-called extremism, what really caught public attention, and lead to ridicule both here and internationally, was the case study of the fictional environmental activist Karen. On today's show we speak with Cam Walker, from Friends of the Earth, who are calling for the immediate withdrawal of the kit. And we also hear from Lydia Shelly, a lawyer and community advocate, about the broader context of attacks on civil liberties and the dog-whistle Islamophobia latent in the government's propaganda around violent extremism.Sign the petition to withdraw the Radicalisation Awareness Kit. Guests: Cam Walker (Friends of the Earth Australia); Lydia Shelly (lawyer, committee member of the New South Wales Council for Civil Liberties, co-founder of the Islamophobia Register)
