[Part 1 of 2] At fourteen years old, Christian Picciolini was lost, confused and looking for guidance. If he’d been approached by a footy coach or a skateboarder - he reckons he would have followed their lead. But instead, he was recruited by the leader of the notorious Chicago area skinheads, and found himself deeply entwined in a violent, racist and dangerous neo-nazi hate group. Today, however, Christian spends every day of his life trying to undo the harm he caused, and to help other young people disengage from hate groups. So how did Christian go from being the lead propagandist for an extremist organisation to actively working to bring them down? It’s a story you’ll have to hear to believe - and it’s a story that’s more important today than ever before. Listen to Part 2 of this conversation here. At the heart of America is a dirty and shameful reality. Everyone knows it exists, but the devastating impact it has left on generations of people has been glossed over and even ignored—especially by those who still benefit from it. Our American history is rooted in racism. More obvious chapters include the decimation of Native American populations, slavery, segregation, and the Jim Crow era. Most Americans have learned about—or at least heard of—these events. But ask them about the eugenics movement, or when homegrown extremists filled Madison Square Garden for a Nazi rally, or how Henry Ford's hatred of Jews helped inspire Adolf Hitler, and you're likely to get a blank stare. It's time to explore these overlooked events that don't make it into our history books and correct the record for the people harmed by them, to trace our past to modern tragedies, and learn how folks over the centuries have fought back. We need to confront more of our racist history, so that we might have a chance to defeat it once and for all. Hosted by Nazi-fighter Christian Picciolini, F*** Your Racist History is a weekly history show that tells America's hidden, overlooked, and unknown racist origin stories. Our guest this week is Christian Picciolini. Christian is an activist, author and speaker who is a former white supremacist but is doing the hard work of reconciliation and helping other people leave hate groups through his nonprofit The Free Radicals Project. His newest book Breaking Hate: Confronting the Culture of Extremism is now available. Praise For Breaking Hate: Confronting The New Culture Of Extremism… "This riveting narrative portrays on an intensely personal level the impacts of extremism. Encouragingly, it also identifies a method for recovery. Picciolini's experience and practice reinforce the truism that hate is a learned behavior, and it can be unlearned. Breaking Hate should be required reading for all citizens who care about dangerous behavior, want to understand it, and are committed to reducing it."—James Clapper, former US Director of National Intelligence "Riveting, horrifying, and hopeful, Breaking Hate provides a careful and detailed account of how to stop society's death spiral into extremism, and when we need it most urgently."—S.E. Cupp, nationally syndicated columnist and CNN host, author of Losing Our Religion "With piercing insight and unrivaled compassion, Breaking Hate tells the tragic story of how extremism has torn our communities asunder and how every American can work together to end the epidemic of violence that has taken so many of our loved ones. In a country where more than 96 percent of mass shootings are perpetrated by men, we need to find ways of helping our boys grow into healthy young men who not only reject hate but also feel they have paths forward in today's economy."—Andrew Yang, 2020 Democratic presidential candidate "Gripping and timely...Written with authority and first-hand experience...Breaking Hate is filled with rare insights that put today's rise of white supremacy into perspective -- and shows us how to stop it."—Ali Soufan, former FBI special agent and New York Times bestselling author of Anatomy of Terror: From the Death of bin Laden to the Rise of the Islamic State "Breaking Hate is a groundbreaking book. It reveals the depths of the modern white-power extremist movement and illustrates how easily the children of good-hearted, proud Americans can become transformed and corrupted...A sorrowfully necessary book for the dark period America has found itself in."—Malcolm Nance, counter-terrorism analyst for NBC News and New York Times bestselling author of The Plot to Betray America, from the foreword --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

Special note: This episode was recorded in December 2020, prior to the insurrection at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.Heather Heyer lost her life on August 12, 2017, to a white supremacist hell bent on causing harm when he drove his car into a crowd of counter-protestors at the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville, VA. Heather has a mom and her name is Susan Bro.In Episode 024, I have the pleasure of being in conversation with my friend, Susan. Introduced by a “former”, meaning, a former white supremacist, Christian Picciolini, Susan and I share the sorrow of losing our children, to the same hate-filled ideology.Unlike me, Susan immersed herself in learning about white supremacists, wanting to understand who they were and their actions that led to her daughters murder. Catapulted into the national spotlight following Heather’s funeral, Susan was asked to attend numerous events including The Ellen Show, the VMA Awards and rode on the Aids Healthcare Foundation float in the Rose Bowl Parade in January 2018, only five months after burying Heather. The notoriety stunted her grieving process and placed her on an unintended platform. Our conversation highlights the healing work engulfing Susan, aptly titled the Heather Heyer Foundation. With help from a few friends and volunteers, Susan tirelessly works to keep her daughter’s spirit alive, now owning the name, “activist.” Offering scholarships to qualified applicants who intend to promote positive change using their professional skills, Susan dreams of a day when her foundation has the assets to endow a 4-year college scholarship.Expectations of retirement included puttering around her home, crocheting gifts for nieces and nephews and cooking meals for her husband, Kim. With humor, Susan explains to us that all of these continue to exist daily, alongside a tough to tackle social calendar. My episode offers a glimpse into her life as a grieving mother determined to create social awareness and change for the betterment of society. Using her voice to speak only the truth, Susan beckons each of us to use our talents and abilities to help others.Prepare to be challenged with finding a higher purpose.Mindy—-Christian Picciolini - a former White Power leader in the Chicago, Il area. In this episode I recall how long a journey can take to reach a destination - specifically, a destination we had not intended. Long hours, days on end, aching wrists and arms found me typing a manuscript I have titled, The Healing of a Shattered Soul. Now in the hands of FrontEdge Publishing as I draft these show notes, I am not yet aware if I will have a contract with them. Their interest in my story, the encouragement from family and friends and my own aching heart led me to lay out for myself and you the sorrowful, heart wrenching and inspirational journey I’ve traveled over the past six and a half years. A visit with my dear friend in Connecticut prompted me to start writing in 2016, two years after the murders of my father and son, Reat. After 60,000 words found their way onto pages, with the assistance of Brooke Brundige-Latas, we placed what I would call a “first draft” in the hands of a publisher. It was not meant to be.While this was my story, I also realized it to be a collective of broken hearts, shattered lives and a whole lot of humans helping other humans pick up the pieces. When people come into our lives it is not always by happenstance. I hope you follow me as I explain how one person led to another, who led to another, who helped me finish the manuscript and find an interested party (hopefully) to place it into print. Courage was indeed required and plenty of kindness from those around me! #courageouskindnessWelcome to 2021 - friends, let’s stay healthy and masked until all of us are in a safer situation with Covid-19. Check out our IG highlight for resources and ways you can get involved. In this week’s episode we cover a controversial topic with Christian Picciolini – an author, public speaker, musician and former neo-Nazi leader. After leaving the white supremacist movement he helped create when he was just 16 years old, Christian started dedicating his career to helping others overcome their own hate. He is now co-founder of the nonprofit Life After Hate and founder of the Free Radicals Project, a network of people who are working to prevent extremism and help people leave extremist groups. Christian talks to us about his childhood and how he was recruited into the Neo-Nazi movement, which often targets vulnerable young men with broken promises of power and a sense of belonging. As we live in a society that’s quick to shame and condemn extremists as irredeemable, Christian shares with us why he finds this to be ineffective, and how extending compassion towards someone who may not deserve it might be the only way to create real change. We talk about the importance of community, identity and purpose as our most fundamental needs and how people are recruited into hate groups less because of ideology or dogma, but rather because of a broken search for identity. Stay tuned for the end of the episode, where Christian closes our discussion by reading an excerpt from his book, “White American Youth.” ***We're offering ALL OUR CLASSES VIRTUALLY! Christian Picciolini is an Emmy Award-winning director and producer, a published author, a TEDx speaker, and a reformed extremist.  He is the co-founder of Life After Hate, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding long-term solutions that counter racism and violent extremism.  His latest book is titled White American Youth: My Descent into America's Most Violent Hate Movement – and How I Got Out.   Some interesting insights from this episode:  “Hatred is born of ignorance. Fear is its father and isolation is its mother.”  Hear about the tactics hate groups use to recruit.  The birth of his children was the impetus he needed to reprioritize his values and walk away from his former life.  The first step in counseling others to leave the extremist movement is just listening.  The people who join the extremist movement aren't generally swayed initially by their philosophy. Most are just searching for identity, community and purpose.  Learn how the African American who forgave him for the physical violence he once caused was the trigger that gave him the courage to tell his story to the world.  The way we can help is to show compassion to those who deserve it the least because those are the ones who need it the most.  “Excellence is being the best human being that you can be.”   Show Notes: Christian's book: White American Youth: My Descent into America's Most Violent Hate Movement – and How I Got Out  https://www.amazon.com/White-American-Youth-Americas-Movement/dp/0316522902/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1515354532&sr=8-1&keywords=christian+picciolini  Christian's website: www.christianpicciolini.com  Christian's one on one talk with Richard Spencer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U5zCbwFizA

"WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT PREVENTION, NOT JUST INTERVENTION. [...] THE PEOPLE IN POWER, WHO TYPICALLY END UP BEING WHITE MALES, TEND TO PRESCRIBE THE SOLUTIONS THEY THINK ARE BEST FOR PEOPLE. AND OFTENTIMES THOSE ARE ILL-ADVISED OR ILL-INFORMED AND CERTAINLY HAVE A CERTAIN AGENDA TO THEM."   This week, we conclude our conversation with Christian Picciolini. A leader of white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups in his youth, Christian now works as an ambassador to help members of those communities transition out of hate and violence and return to the broader community.   "I HAD TO BE VULNERABLE. […] WHEN I FOUND THE COURAGE TO DO THAT IS WHEN I REALLY DISCOVERED MY INNER POWER AND BEGAN TO SHARE MY STORY."   The Get InPowered Podcast is about solutions and progress. In this episode, we focus on both. Christian identifies opportunities and actionable moments to stem the tides of hatred and violence and form a more understanding and effective global community. Through this episode, we can recognize our power as citizens and our collective humanity.   "WE NEED TO RECOGNIZE THAT THINGS MUST BECOME EQUAL IF WE'RE GOING TO BE EQUAL AND FREE."

"If we can find a way to amplify the good things that people are passionate about, and provide opportunity, I suspect we'll see less extremism when people are more resilient." - Christian   On the Get InPowered Podcast, we often talk about transformation and life-altering moments. Christian Picciolini is perhaps the prime example of such a transformation. A leader of white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups in his youth, Christian now works as an ambassador to help members of those communities transition out of hate and violence back into the broader community.   Christian's perspective is unique and his passion for helping people overcome their hatred and defeat the core issues in their lives that lead them to these paths is overwhelming. How do you reach people who've turned against their fellow man? By listening first, then extending the three things people want most: Identity, community and a sense of purpose.   "It made me feel powerful when I felt the most powerless, and I was willing at that time to put aside the racism just to belong, just to feel accepted and have a status of somebody who was not on the margins anymore." - Christian.   "It's pretty simple. We tend to hate other people because we hate ourselves, we hate the situation we're in. And we project the pain that we feel onto other people so that we can rid ourselves of that pain." - Christian   "Hatred is born of ignorance; fear is its father and isolation is its mother." - Christian
