In the early 90's, a new kind of soulful hip hop emerged on the scene with the arrival of P.M. Dawn, and their smash hit "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss". Brothers Prince Be and Eternal became influential to many future hip hop artists. Their cousin Doc G. joined the group, and spent Prince Be's final years with him. Doc G now represents the group. Although some feel the move is controversial, Doc G confronts the naysayers. Today, he is speaking on this podcast about his experiences, as we give admiration to the talent and life of Prince Be, who passed in 2016.

P.M. Dawn were one of the most revolutionary voices in hip-hop history and, frankly, they don't get the credit they deserve. Led by primary creative visionary Prince Be, the sibling duo brought colors and textures to rap that weren't there before and have influenced the more creative hip-hop we hear today. Sadly, Prince Be passed away last year, one of the many heart-breaking deaths from 2016, putting an end to a singular vision and voice. We are honored to have his partner and brother DJ Minutemix (aka Eternal, aka Jarrett Cordes) on this week to fill us in on how the family is doing, what Be was like and the spriritual influences of their music, the story behind giant hits like "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" and "I'd Die Without You", and why someone named Doc G is out there calling himself P.M. Dawn.

We’re talking about kidney disease and diabetes on our 6th AnniversaryDiabetes Late Nite podcast with musical inspiration from P.M. Dawn. Prince Be, the frontman for the psychedelic pop-rap group P.M. Dawn, which in the early 1990s died of renal failure resulting from complications of diabetes at age 46. Prince Be had suffered from diabetes for more than two decades, and had various health problems over the years, among them several strokes, including one in 2005 that left him partly paralyzed, and gangrene, which led to the partial amputation of one leg.  P.M. Dawn stood out for its hippie-esque mysticism, fantastical imagery, Christian references and ethereal musical aesthetic. Prince Be’s performance style blurred the lines between rapping and singing, and between the earthly and the spiritual. P.M. Dawn’s single “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss” — based on a sample of the new wave standard “True,” by Spandau Ballet — which became the first rap song by a black act to top the Hot 100, Billboard’s pop singles chart. In 2005, P.M. Dawn appeared on the NBC reality show “Hit Me, Baby, One More Time.” Prince Be, who had suffered a stroke, had to be assisted onto the stage and performed from a seat. The group donated their $20,000 prize to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Guests: Poet Lorraine Brooks, Mama Rose Marie, the Charlie's Angels of Outreach, Lynette Luckers from the Marion Luckers Kidney Foundation, Chef Robert Lewis aka 'The Happy Diabetic', Janis Roszler, RD, CDE, FAND and Leon Petrossian.  Diabetes Late Nite is a fast-paced, full-filled hour of diabetes education and wellness advice that encourages listeners to “laugh a little, learn a lot.”

Let's start this off with a bang! The Cleveland Cavaliers win NBA championship as LeBron James has game of his life. History has been made. No team had ever rallied from a 3-1 deficit to win the NBA finals. This is the first major sports championship that a Cleveland team has won since 1964. He can FINALLY get the monkey off of his back! When it comes to America's favorite fast food, chicken reigns supreme. This figures - Chick-fil-A is the highest ranking fast food restaurant in the country for customer satisfaction. EVERYONE loves Chick-fil-A...the lines are always around the block; it must be that good. Prince unreleased music debuts and could be a first glimpse into Prince's fabled vault of new music, and it premiered at Milan Fashion Week, courtesy of Donatella Versace. Donatella cranked the 11-minute mix during Saturday's show of Versace's men's collection. She says Prince, who was a longtime friend, would send her music all the time as a way of communicating. This is interesting. A study shows that Obama’s presidency has influenced African-American names. More black babies have been given “African American sounding” names since President Barack Obama’s election, the result of new parents feeling better about their heritage after America elected its first minority president. See what the crew has to say on this one! Should adults twerk in front of children? Amber Rose considers it "bonding" time. She is crazy as hell. This figures though from someone who gets money doing these sorts of things on a regular basis. In more sad celebrity news, Attrell Cordes, better known as, Prince Be, one half of the popular 90’s hip-hop group P.M. Dawn has died at the age of 46. This is WAY to much! This has to get better before it gets worse. The fellas were in the house to keep the tempo up. Along with new guest host, BET's "Mayor of Rap City", Chris Thomas the guys held it down! We also debuted a "Throwback Hip-Hop Moment" with Chris Thomas that you have check out.

DOC G-THE DOC OF THE DAWN Since the unfortunate sickness of Prince B, Doc G has decided to keep the fans happy by touring and singing the PM Dawn hits as well as his solo projects. Born and raised in the beach 40 projects of Far Rockaway Queens in New York, Doc G has been entertaining fans all around the world for more than 15 years. As half the duo of P.M. Dawn, Doc G will resurrect the bliss. With new music from an all new solo album (THE PURR-SCRIPT-SHUN) and a P.M. Dawn live album ready to roll out, there is no stopping the Doc Of The Dawn!!! At the young age of five, Doc developed a passion for emulating other hip hop artists. He became a local celebrity performing music by legendary hip hop artists that included Run DMC, Sugar Hill Gang, and LL Cool J, just to name a few. As a teenager, Doc G would learn the art of freestyle and combine this newfound skill into his very entertaining and comical performances. His family would prove to be active in the music world as DJ's and hip hop artists. Two of Doc's cousins came together to form the highly successful group P.M. Dawn. In the early days of P.M. Dawn, Doc G was called upon to serve in the U.S. Navy. While Doc G was in the Navy, P.M. Dawn would reach world-wide success with “Set a drift on memory bliss.” After receiving a postcard from his mother about an attack on Prince Be from KRS One and Boogie Down Productions, he would reunite with his cousin and then joined the crew as the hype man (forfeiting his G.I. Bill). After a brief hiatus, Doc G would reform P.M. Dawn with his cousin, Prince Be.
