Send us a textThis week Lou & DJ Paulie dive deep into the music history you won't hear anywhere else, featuring The "Taboo Tracks" Top 10 Countdown. We're exploring smash hits that became controversial over time, often reflecting shifting cultural sensitivities or due to the artists themselves growing to hate their own songs. Listen in as we unpack the reasons why chart-toppers like Pat Benatar's "Hit Me with Your Best Shot", The Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar", Heart's "All I Want to Do Is Make Love to You", and The Who's "Pinball Wizard" have been dropped from live set lists.Plus, tune in for a brand new segment: "Bad Band Breakups" with Todd Snyder! Todd runs down the legendary breakups, bad blood, and bad decisions that split iconic groups. Hear the untold stories behind the implosions of bands like The Beatles (Yoko Ono's influence and the legal battles), Oasis (the violent sibling rivalry), The Smiths (Morrissey vs. Marr), and Pink Floyd (Roger Waters' attempts to legally dissolve the band). We also squeeze in our favorite segments, including:• Stupid Criminals (Busted): Featuring tales of a man calling 911 because his mom didn't wash his clothes, a drunk driver crashing into a "Drive Sober" sign, and the woman who followed a sergeant in a stolen driver's education car because she "just wanted to see where he was going".• Random Facts: Did you know that a female ferret can die if she goes into heat and can't find a mate? Or that the oldest major soft drink in America is Dr. Pepper?• Bad Dates: Brace yourself for stories involving nipple piercings that "taste like house keys", sudden herpes confessions, and dating surveillance by an accompanying bodyguard.Catch the Back in Time Brothers every Monday on URL radio www.urlradio.net! and you can listen back anytime at www.backtimebrothers.comSupport the showThanks for listening. This week we kept shouting things like HIT ME! TWIST! GO FISH! WHAT'S A SPADE? In order to win the professional attention, and personal sympathy, of Jo Living – founder of ‘poker for business' consultancy Aces High. Having noticed that poker was less about bluff and bravado and more about strategy, empathy and teamwork, Jo realised it could be the perfect game for teaching people how to make smarter business decisions. From there she went on to run workshops teaching everything from communication and negotiation, to assertiveness and risk management, all done eye-to-eye through what she calls the ‘contact' sport of poker. It's an episode where we try very hard not to say things about ‘laying the cards on the table' (but probably won't succeed) covering everything from the real-world value of a poker face to the power of a timely pause. In this episode of The Planet LP Podcast, host Ted Asregadoo takes listeners on a deep dive into Pat Benatar's groundbreaking early career, examining her first four albums that established her as a pioneering force in hard rock. The episode explores how Benatar shattered the glass ceiling for female artists in a male-dominated genre during the late 1970s and early 1980s, while also revealing the creative challenges that emerged with her fourth release. The journey begins with Patricia Mae Andrzejewski's transformation from a military wife to rock icon, following her path from New York City through various singing gigs to her breakthrough 1979 debut "In the Heat of the Night." Ted analyzes the album's standout tracks, including the chart-topping "Heartbreaker," the new wave-influenced "We Live For Love," and her cover of Johnny Cougar's (later known as John Mellencamp) "I Need a Lover." The episode highlights "Crimes of Passion" (1980) as Benatar's commercial and artistic peak, featuring the iconic "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" and reaching 4x platinum status. Ted shares personal anecdotes about discovering the album during high school and addresses the controversy surrounding the song "Hell Is for Children," clarifying its powerful message about child abuse rather than satanic themes. Moving through "Precious Time" (1981), the discussion covers Grammy-winning track "Fire and Ice" and the explosive "Promises in the Dark," while examining Benatar's creative partnership with guitarist Neil Giraldo. However, the episode takes a bit of a critical turn when analyzing "Get Nervous" (1982), revealing how, despite producing solid singles, the album as a whole felt uneven and suggested that the signature "Pat Benatar Sound" had begun to lose its edge. Ted discusses how the formula that had worked so well across three albums was showing signs of creative fatigue, setting the stage for the dramatic reinvention that would come with "Love is a Battlefield" – a song that would refresh her sound and prove she could evolve beyond her established hard rock persona.

A Note from Jacob: If you or someone you know are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call 988. It is a pleasure to welcome singer and actress Marla Mase to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. A native New Yorker, Marla was born in Brooklyn and raised in Canarsie. At 18, she moved to Tribeca, where she lived for 32 years, raised her two children, and founded PARTYpoopers/partySWANK, one of NYC's premier event planning companies. In addition to her entrepreneurial success, Marla is a versatile artist—an accomplished writer, performer, recording artist, and the COO of Brooklyn-based True Groove Records. She recently returned from her third whirlwind tour of the UK this year, promoting her eighth and ninth album releases, The Fine Art of Pissing in the Bushes and Infinite They Went (vinyl). She is touring Being Somebody, a show she co-wrote and performs alongside her 88-year-old father, Dr. Howard Mase, to sold-out audiences across the East Coast. Her other theatrical works have been featured at prestigious venues such as La MaMa ETC, NYC SummerStage, NJPAC, SXSW, and Nuyorican Poets Café. Marla Mase is also the founder of The Lael Project. Lael, a talented singer and graduate of the University of Southern California's prestigious Thornton School of Music Popular Music Program, had struggled with depression, anorexia, and suicidal thoughts from a young age. Despite her battles, she chose to help others, working at a treatment center in Los Angeles for individuals suffering from mental illness. Lael's empathy and understanding profoundly impacted those she worked with, many of whom have shared with Marla how her daughter saved their lives. “After she died, I received numerous emails, texts, and calls from residents who told me that Lael was the reason they were alive today,” Marla recounted. “Lael was not a therapist per se, but they felt she understood what they were going through better than anyone else.” Marla's mission now is to honor Lael's legacy by using her music to help others recognize the signs of suicide and seek help. The Lael Project is a two-volume album featuring both original songs and covers recorded by Lael during her brief but impactful music career. The project features re-mixes, never-before-released material, live recordings dating back to her pre-teen years and remastered versions of her two existing albums, Burden to Bear (2013) and Life in Color (2015). Scheduled for release in 2025 under Brooklyn's True Groove Records, The Lael Project aims to open conversations about mental illness and break the stigma around suicide. On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Marla Mase discussed the stories behind several of her songs, including “Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick,” “Falling Sideways,” and “All Fall Short.” She also discussed how you can get involved with the Lael Project.Let's connect on social media: A) BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/jacobelyachar.bsky.socialB) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JacobElyachar/C) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jacobelyachar/D) Threads: https://www.threads.net/@jacobelyacharE) Twitter (X): https://x.com/JacobElyacharF) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JacobElyacharBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.
The music festival promoters hustle hard to secure a plane to Zaire. Finally on board, all the artists are nearly killed by James Brown and his oversized ego. Despite the high drama, the flight is a magical experience for all aboard when the musicians turn the plane into an epic jam session. This shared joy carries the crew through to Zaire. Upon arrival, they are greeted by the drums and voices of The Motherland. Meanwhile, fight promoters scramble to rearrange the weekend after Foreman’s cut and, in doing so, find out who President Mobutu really is. In the United States, she has had four multi-platinum albums, six platinum albums, and 19 Billboard top 40 singles, while in Canada she had eight straight platinum albums, and she has sold over 50 million albums worldwide.[citation needed] She is also a four-time Grammy Award winner. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November 2022.Her 1979 debut album, In the Heat of the Night, was her breakthrough in North America, especially in Canada where it reached No. 3 on the album chart. Two singles from it were hits: "Heartbreaker" and "We Live for Love", the latter written by her lead guitarist and future husband, Neil Giraldo. Her second album, 1980's Crimes of Passion, was her most successful work, peaking at No. 2 in North America and France, being certified 4× and 5× platinum in the US and Canada, respectively. Its single "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" reached the top 10 in the US and Canada and is considered to be her best-known song. Her third album, Precious Time (1981), was another success, topping the US Album Chart and becoming her first top 10 album in Australia. Its single "Fire and Ice" charted highly in the US and Canada. Her next release, Get Nervous (1982), sold less well than her previous two albums, but did include the North American hit "Shadows of the Night".Her sound began to move towards more atmospheric pop in 1983. The single "Love Is a Battlefield" (1983) was her biggest hit in most countries, reaching No. 1 in the Netherlands, Australia and on the US Rock Tracks chart, and No. 5 on the US Hot 100. The live album it came from, Live from Earth, was her biggest seller in Australia, Germany and the Netherlands. In 1984, she released Tropico and its lead single "We Belong", which reached the top 10 in several countries, including No. 5 on the US Hot 100.Her 1985 album, Seven the Hard Way, sold less well but it yielded two singles harking back to the rock vein: "Invincible", a top 10 hit in North America, and "Sex as a Weapon". Her follow-up, Wide Awake in Dreamland (1988), marked a resurgence in sales in Canada and Australia, and was her biggest hit in the UK. Its rocker, "All Fired Up", was a significant hit in Canada, Australia and the US. She released four additional albums between 1991 and 2003 That were well recieved. EPISODE 79: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) How could the Republicans be THIS stupid? The man who will lead their attack on Hunter and Joe Biden, Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, has been credibly accused by his college girlfriend of violence, psychological abuse, threatening her life, and driving her to the clinic to abort their child. (2:05) Did they think that because the story broke seven years ago it had fallen off the internet? The first full day they are the Majority-Elect they trot out a new head of House Oversight, James Comer of Kentucky, who announces a Hunter Biden investigation and then says "I want to be clear: This is an investigation of JOE Biden." (3:05) No, let ME be clear: this needs to be an investigation of JAMES COMER. This is where this crap STOPS. (5:20) You don't like this kind of stuff? This is the only way to STOP this kind of stuff: the bully has to get the crap beaten out of him, and James Comer is the bully here. Let's Go. (7:15) What the GOP should've announced it was investigating was Ticketmaster (9:10) Still the co-defendant in the Republican Investigation Machine is the media. The Washington Examiner and Red State didn't headline Comer's Folly over Pelosi's Retirement - CNN and The New York Times did. (11:50) And once again CNN's Chief Chris Licht stepped right up with that big "Hit Me" sign around his neck and said "So the play is not to be offensive to A side, right?" I'll explain how wrong he is. (13:43) The good news is: the Democrats are finally getting smart, and David Brock has left Media Matters to run a "SWAT Team" that will investigate the GOP investigators. And they can start with the James Comer scandal. Oh, did I mention the James Comer scandal? B-Block (20:20) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Miller in Pennsylvania, who ate a sock (21:16) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Space Karen kills Twitter; 1/6 Subcommittee to decide whether to make criminal referrals (23:43) IN SPORTS: The Most Valuable Players are named. If a guy finishes 2nd in that vote AND 4th in the vote for best pitcher, isn't he by definition the "most valuable?" What the hell does "most valuable" mean? (26:38) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Mike Pompeo forgets his part in the insurrection, the New York Post has never heard of "Run Of Show" or "Rundown" documents. They compete with Baseball's Commissioner who suddenly announced that if you bet on baseball, you should be banned BY baseball. C-Block (31:30) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: His classic stories of Man vs. Life: "Nine Needles" and "The Mouse Who Went To The Country."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What's creepier than being misunderstood? Adam and Ed kick off with a “women of the blues” Karaoke Trivia Bullpen challenge before diving into the karaoke songs that are often sung without really contemplating the meaning behind those lyrics. Which boy band from the ‘90s is like “if bubble gum pop and Jean-Paul Sartre had a baby?” Which dance pop hit would chart on a “nice guys” forum in addition to the Billboard charts? Why is the song that was #1 on the charts the week Ed was born creepy as hell? The guys deviate from the main topic of the interview because let's face it–no one wants to hear two middle-aged white males talk about the experiences of women in music (and karaoke), so who better to bring on than Courtney E. Smith (author: Record Collecting for Girls, and the creator of the murder ballad podcast “Songs in the Key of Death”). She talks about why being a bad singer at karaoke is better for everyone involved, the worst karaoke-related date she has ever been on, and, surprisingly, a great experience singing “Picture” with a total stranger. Yep, that “Picture,” the bane of this show and the runner up to last season's “Song to Ban From Karaoke” question. She cruises through the “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” quickfire challenge, and then puts Adam and Ed through the ringer with a rapid-fire take on the “Fire Away” response of her own. As always, you can find more info on the website (https://www.sungpoorly.com), and on social media--the show is @sungpoorly on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and now even Tiktok. You can reach Adam and Ed via email by sending a message to sungpoorly@gmail.com. And if you want to support the podcast and snag yourself some great karaoke and podcast swag doing it, our store has all of that and more–www.sungpoorly.com/store. The guys are still taking calls for the annual karaoke advice episode, so make sure to leave them a voice message on their Podinbox page (or, y'know, DM them or email them--but the new voice option is so much more fun).
