Boogie Down Productions - led by KRS-One - was an inventive group of the time, taking KRS' superior lyrical ability and combining it with production that was initially highly dynamic at first. With five albums, the death of Scott La Rock marring the history and plenty of lore, it makes for an iconic story in Hip-Hop history.TIMESTAMPS:Weekly Music Roundup - (0:57)Ben:Drake x PARTYNEXTDOOR - $ome $exy $ongs 4 UWestside Gunn - 12Charlie: BNMO - The Eleventh HourAnthony Joseph - Rowing up River to Get Our Names BackBexBlu, Renelle 893 - THE BUZZchlothegod - I Feel Different Every DayJohn Glacier - Like A RibbonMereba - The Breeze Grew a FireRizzle Kicks - Competition is for LosersBrother Ali & ANT - Satisfied SoulTopic Intro/Ben's Research House - (13:04)Criminal Minded - (16:58)By All Means Necessary - (27:35)Ghetto Music: The Blueprint of Hip Hop (Charlie accidentally skips this one and talks about Edutainment, we get there eventually) - (36:25)Edutainment - (44:49)Sex and Violence - (46:33)Lighter Note - (54:35)Chelsea Reject's Funeral GoFundMeThanks for listening. After releasing five albums with Boogie Down Productions, KRS-One went solo. He recruited different producers, most notably DJ Premier, to reinvent his career and create a hip-hop album created solely for the hardcore heads.

1987 was a watershed year for Hip Hop.  It saw the debut albums from Ice-T, NWA & the Posse, Boogie Down Productions and Eric B & Rakim.  All are certifiable classics but it was Public Enemy's debut that was sonically the most adventurous.  The beeps and wails of the Bomb Squads production coupled with Chuck D's booming baritone and Flavor Flav's enticing prompts was unlike anything that had come before (or anything since).  The militant stance projected in the Black Panther inspired cover photo wasn't wholly present in Chuck's lyrics yet (that would come fully formed on their sophomore LP a year later) but all the pieces were in place to make PE one of the most important acts in the genres history.     RIP Cormac McCarthy RIP Chris Hassett  RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening:   EP17:  “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” https://huntsmanhill.com/2017/03/20/ep17-public-enemy-it-takes-a-nation-of-millions-to-hold-us-back/   EP224:  Living Colour “Vivid” https://huntsmanhill.com/2023/05/28/ep224-living-colour-vivid/   The Punk Rock Museum https://www.thepunkrockmuseum.com   fIREHOSE “Sophisticated Bitch”  https://open.spotify.com/track/3GWvQf6EaAYoNuZ9owMeBa?si=4a1677aff7fa4316   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   HHPP Amazon Affiliates Store https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/06/09/hhpp-store/   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7tFBWn0UFkdOEMf67TRD6W?si=vzllkbDwSEmfZFlj02GLRwAcademy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-c   Omertà 68:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/6dfiCa0qTlbPQUrqtIkStS?si=6SCjNtXbSO2xRBDuBKJelQ   huntsmanhill.com instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill

He discussed studying at the Countee Cullen Library, his experience at Columbia University, and finding himself spiritually during his trips to Africa. He got into writing for 40 Acres and A Mule, warning about the gentrification coming to Harlem, and opening up Dapper Dan's Boutique in 1982. He then spoke about the Hip-Hop artists that he styled including: LLCoolJ, Eric B. & Rakim, & Boogie Down Productions, the infamous Mike Tyson Mitch Green fight that took place in his shop that would eventually get his store shut down, and having to go underground. Dapper Dan also got into designing Salma Hayek's dress for the Oscars, his Gucci partnership, and when jerseys became a huge part of the Hip-Hop culture. Dap announced that he has another book that he is writing on the way as well as his movie on his life story through Sony Pictures. Stay tuned! They also explore D-Nice's storied history in rap music, starting with his role as as founding member of the legendary old-school hip-hop collective Boogie Down Productions, his self-reinvention as a DJ after his solo career fizzled in the 1990s, and what the future holds for D and Club Quarantine. After that we chat about what inspired him to get into music and the influence that Boogie Down Productions has in the music world. Lastly, we finish the interview with the Fatherhood Quick Five.  About DJ D-Nice  Before Derrick Jones was a modern day renaissance man, he was the youngest member of pioneering Hip-hop crew Boogie Down Productions, lead by the legendary KRS-One. Though it was 1987 when a teenage D-Nice put his first record atop a turntable (EPMD's “It's My Thing”), he would mainly serve as BDP's prodigy producer before embarking on his very own solo rap career. In 1990, he would finally birth a classic of his own––the pulse and gospel of the debut single “Call Me D-Nice” is unforgettable. Now DJ D-Nice has been making people move and groove to the beat. More importantly he is best job of all is father. He has two daughters and loves to be part of their lives every day. DJ D-Nice wants to make sure that he is always there for his daughters. Last week, we discussed the importance of 1988 in hip hop culture, both in the way it evolved musically and how it provided a realistic portrayal of life in the inner cities. In part one, we discussed Slick Rick's “Children Story”, N.W.A.'s “Straight Outta Compton”, and Boogie Down Productions' “My Philosophy”. This week we're picking up where we left off and will be finishing out our top fives. We're joined again by Steve Tyson, a.k.a. Ellect, who shares his expertise with us. Check out his new album Intellectual Property, out now wherever you get your music.Follow Ellect on Instagram @ellect217 and on ellect.bandcamp.com.

Son of a major car dealer and raised in mansion with a horse paddock and a pond, listen to the musical history of Bobby Shazam. A child of the 80's, he falls in love with rap and break dancing. He teaches himself the wheels of steel, the 1's & 2's and after meeting Mike Clarke he signs a deal with Jive Records and starts as the opening act for Boogie Down Productions.A regular performer at many of Detroit's East Side house parties, he came up along side other local rappers like; Esham, Insane Clown Posse and Slim Shady himself, Eminem. One thing this white rapper will tell you, he hates being compared to Vanilla Ice and blames Rob Van Winkle for setting his career back a couple of years and making it harder to succeed in the music business. With his metoritc rise to the top, he marries BayWatch beach runner, Pamela Anderson. With the ups come the downs, he gets into a fist fight at the MTV VMA Awards with Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, he punched out a strip club DJ in Nashville and has a traditional Atlanta Waffle House Brawl. Baw-wit-the-baw, it's time to get raw, it's the roll of Kid Rock!Leave an Anonymous SpeakPipe Voice Msg: www.crimeinmusic.comTweet Us: www.twitter.com/crimeinmusicIG: www.instagram.com/crimeinusicFaceBook: www.facebook.com/crimeinmusicThis show is part of Pantheon Podcasts
