It's easy to miss in between helpings of turkey and mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving, or with the neighbors already setting up their Christmas lights and Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" playing on a loop on the radio, but at the very end of the church's year is a powerful and surprising celebration called "Christ the King" Sunday, or "The Reign of Christ" Sunday. And even though it has only been officially observed for less than a century [a short time in the sweep of two thousand years of Christian history], Christ the King Sunday taps into a theme that runs throughout the Scriptures and goes back to our ancient roots. Jesus is Lord... but his way of reigning is completely different from what the world expects of lords, kings, potentates, and emperors. Jesus is the Messiah, but the One whose kingdom comes through a cross. Jesus reigns, by serving with the washbasin and towel. It is a subversive idea, but maybe that's exactly what we need. In this episode, pastors Erica, Sarah, and Steve talk about the meaning, history, and scriptural roots of this day, and what it might mean for us in a culture that so often thinks power means being a bully.

Message from November 20, 2022 by Kara VerHage, Lead Pastor. Psalm 46.
Jeremiah's promise of the execution of “justice and righteousness in the land” finds ironic fulfillment in the execution of Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. It appears utterly contradictory that a king should be crucified with a criminal. This victory appears for all the world as humiliating defeat. Yet through the gate of death Jesus opens the door to paradise. Scripture Readings: Jeremiah 23:1-6; Psalm 46; Luke 23:33-43

Christ the King has a few issues. It's history. How it is used today by various groups opposed to the government's response to Covid.John uses the reading from John's Gospel to explore some of that, and then quotes Liz Fitzmaurice's opinion piece in Stuff as an example of what the reign of Christ might look like today He asks- What does the reign of God look like in a Covid world?- What future do we imagine in Christ?- What values shape that future? The notes for this sermon can be found here

John asks "What’s the Deal with the Reign of Christ Sunday?"He then explores that For Matthew the reign of Christ is described in Sermon on Mount and how that helps us read this last story of the final teaching block - the parable of the sheep and goats. How does this help us glimpse what the kingdom of heaven and the reign of Christ looks like.In light of that do we act to earn something, because it is the right thing to do, or because that is just who we are?

Luke 23:33-43 Guest Pastor Hannah Nutt admits that the scripture this week feels odd to read on a celebratory Sunday before Advent begins. But Hannah uses an example, a clip from the film "Son of Man" which retells the Crucifixion story in modern-day South Africa. In the clip, a character portraying Jesus is hung on a cross after being taken and killed by an armed militia in the night. Jesus's mother leads a small group to sing and dance at the foot of the cross. (The clip of the film has been removed from the sermon for copyright reasons). Hannah goes to to explain that the Reign of Christ is, in fact, a modern reign. Christ is with us past, present, and future. Modern laws that divide us are not Christlike. We are called, Hannah says, to place our bodies on the line to defend humanity in the face of oppressive laws and regimes. But also, we are called to celebrate the reign of Christ by dancing at the foot of His cross.
Fear plays a complicated role in our lives -- and in the lives of some more than others. Fear can both motivate us toward courageous action and prevent us from taking action. What would our lives as disciples look like if we lived and served without fear? (Luke 1:68-79)

Matthew 25 is the familiar passage where Jesus tells followers that whenever they show love to the least among them, they are extending love to Him. God's particular love for the poor and marginalized is on display in this text, along with His justice and judgment. Bob suggests that "oracles of judgment" like the one in Matthew 25 are good news that remind us that God is on the side of justice and peace.

John explores what the idea of the reign of Christ has to say to the events in Europe and the Middle East over the last few weeks/moths/years. Where might be the reign of Christ in all this? He then invites people to be signs of the reign of Christ in Tauranga Moana and in the world
We need to be really careful about how we talk about and live out “Christ the King.” It is too easy to just replicate what the rest of society expects and look no different. One way we can do that is to approach Christmas as a time of good news for all people, and to prepare in that vein, rather than just as a family time
