“Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?” This question from the Pharisees was a trap, designed to force Jesus into a divisive rabbinic debate in a politically dangerous territory. Adam Carter is joined by Michael Stetzler (former board president of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church) to talk about something he's helped build and guide called Sacred Settlements. Adam asks Michael to explain the mission and story behind Sacred Settlements. He speaks about providing community especially among people experiencing homelessness. Michael explains the differences of what the church provides versus social services and their “radical” idea of placing no timeline on the residents to leave. They provide a place to call home permanently if people should choose.

Sheletta Brundidge joins the show to kick off the 1pm hour as she does every Friday. She talks about the first week of school and the cheat sheet she's provided to her kids' teachers. It's a big week of adjustment for everyone with littles headed back to the classroom, Sheletta details some of her experiences as a mother of special needs kids and some of the challenges they're navigating. They also talk about undergrads choosing to spend thousands of dollars to custom decorate their dorm rooms, Sheletta playing the Newlywed Game with her ex-husband last week and voting results from Sheletta's election at the Fair. Ezra receives extraordinary royal authorization from Artaxerxes to lead another group of exiles back to Jerusalem. As David hid from Saul in a cave, he cried out to God confidently for mercy. Even before God answered his prayer, David knew that the LORD would show steadfast love and faithfulness to rescue him. Though David's enemies surrounded him, the glory of God that is over all the earth gave David courage. He knew that his enemies would fall into their own trap, and so he praised God even before the danger had passed. With his final breath, Jacob commands his sons to bury him in the cave of Machpelah with Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, and Leah. This last request reveals where his heart truly lies—not in the prosperity of Egypt but in the promises of God. Joseph honors his father with a royal Egyptian funeral: forty days of embalming, seventy days of mourning, and a massive funeral procession including Egyptian dignitaries. Yet this grand Egyptian send-off ends in a simple cave in Canaan. Even Pharaoh's servants witness that Israel's hope lies not in Egypt's glory but in God's covenant promise.
