60. When Meg Ryan Met Dennis Quaid

The holy trinity of Meg Ryan romantic comedies (“When Harry Met Sally,” “You've Got Mail,” and “Sleepless in Seattle”) are huge inspirations behind our podcast and worldviews. But is the real-life starlet as big of a hopeless romantic as her films make us feel? We're headed to the 1990s to look back on her marriage to Dennis Quaid. This is a story of a city girl who unexpectedly fell in love with a “wild guy from Texas.” On the surface, they seemed stronger than ever after overcoming Dennis' struggles with addiction together. This only made their divorce and allegations of adultery more shocking.  Why did Meg come to appreciate the backlash over her relationship with Russell Crowe? What is her relationship with Dennis like today? And, as you'll hear Oprah ask, how long *do* you stay after you know it's really over?  *****  Significant Lovers is a true-love podcast about historic and celebrity couples. AJR sit down with Kyle Meredith to tell us about OK Orchestra, their new album that finds the brothers looking back to their formative years in 8th grade and drawing the parallels to the present day obstacles. Jack & Ryan Met then take us through the political moments of the LP and performing in an era where it's less taboo for an artist to take a stance and speak out, and then give us insight on their penchant for writing songs that sound like samples from the 30s & 40s. They also talk about working with Rivers Cuomo and the comparisons of this record and Weezer's OK Human, and what it was like to wake up to see Will Smith freestyling over their hit “Bang.” --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

And The Writer Is...with Ross Golan

Today’s guest is a New York City-based indie pop band composed of brothers Adam (vocals/bass), Jack (vocals/guitar), and Ryan Met (ukulele/piano/vocals). The band is a DIY pop group who write, produce, and mix their own material in the living room of their Chelsea apartment. Their music style has been described as “eclectic”, combining elements of pop, barbershop, electronic, and dubstep music. They have opened for Demi Lovato, Hoodie Allen and the Wanted. In 2013 the trio released their debut independent single, "I'm Ready." Well-received, the track peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart, and appeared on an initial EP as well as the band's 2015 full-length debut album, Living Room. Today, the Multi Platinum indie pop trio have made their first Top 10 entry on the Billboard Hot 100 with their hit single, “Bang!”. It cracked Top 10 at three radio formats—peaking at No. 6 on Pop Radio, No. 2 on Alternative Radio and No. 1 on Adult Pop Radio—and is double platinum certified, marking their sixth platinum song to date. Andrew, Jack and Ryan Met, better known as AJR, started playing gigs on the streets of New York City. The sidewalk hustle taught them how to grab the attention of the least forgiving audience. Now on their fourth studio album OK Orchestra, they’ve honed an ear-stopping sound that combines modern pop with broadway bombast.  Their platinum-certified single “Bang,” pairs carnival-like horns section with skitterying trap style hi-hats. This strange pairing worked. Peaking at No. 8 on the Hot 100, the song is their strongest commercial release so far, despite sounding like nothing else on Billboard. It is a coming of age celebration (“I’m way too old to try so whatever, come hang / Let’s go out with a bang”) with lyrics that lament the pedestrian parts of adulthood: eating healthy, paying taxes, and remembering your passwords. Like its broadway influences, “Bang” takes little moments and makes them sound larger than life.  Switched On Pop’s Charlie Harding spoke with Jack and Ryan Met about the making of “Bang,” their latest single “Way Less Sad” and the show tune influences on OK Orchestra. It's all about staying in the creative headspace for these guys and putting out quality new music which stands up against, and is different to any other AJR project - and it's working out very well. We talk about the creative process, and how AJR's modern, trappy pop/rock sound (all self-produced in their living rooms by the way) is built on a real mix of influences, from Lennon/McCartney and Brian Wilson to Kendrick Lamar and Broadway productions.
