In this special episode, created by one of our student podcast fellows, NYU student Aditi Jha interviews Sahil Saluja, software developer at Amazon AWS Wickr, an end-to-end encryption messaging app, and a recent master's degree graduate of NYU Tandon's Computer Science program. In his free time, Sahil enjoyed creating videos about NYU to give back to the community, recognizing that important information about NYU can be difficult for prospective students to access, especially international students. Aditi speaks with Sahil about his journey to NYU, how he managed a demanding course load with the internship and job search, and his top tips for networking. Finally, All in a Day's Work goes to Washington Square Park to ask graduating students: what advice do you have for incoming students and new members of the NYU community? Congratulations to the NYU Class of 2025! We'll be re-airing some of our favorite episodes over the summer before returning with all-new episodes in September. For a full transcript of this episode, please email career.communications@nyu.edu.

In this episode of Mind Shift, Aaron and Erwin McManus explore the evolving role of community, the importance of diverse perspectives, and the shifting cultural landscape. Broadcasting from New York City, they invite listeners to join the Mind Shift community, which offers exclusive content and monthly calls for $25 a month. Erwin highlights the deep value of community-driven discussions, where members bring thought-provoking questions that shape meaningful conversations. The discussion shifts to the necessity of diverse perspectives in personal growth. They emphasize the importance of engaging with ideas that challenge one's beliefs rather than staying within the comfort of agreement. Using a recent protest in Washington Square Park as an example, they discuss the unique freedom of speech in America and how differing viewpoints enrich democratic discourse. Erwin expands on this by reflecting on global conflicts, including varying perspectives on the Ukraine war, encouraging listeners to stay open-minded in their understanding of history and politics. They touch on the cultural shifts since 2020, including challenges to the nuclear family, changes in societal values, and the increasing openness of younger generations to spirituality. A key focus of this episode is the growing trend of sobriety among young people. Erwin shares his personal experience of finding peace without relying on substances, emphasizing the importance of developing inner resilience and spiritual grounding. They also explore the rise of stoicism and its relationship with faith, noting that while stoicism provides discipline and control, it lacks the deeper empathy and love found in Jesus' teachings.Expanding on the theme of personal growth, Erwin discusses how addictions—whether to alcohol, cannabis, or other substances—often need to be replaced with healthier habits. He stresses the importance of intentional choices, treating the body as a temple, and pursuing fulfillment through positive behaviors rather than destructive cycles. The conversation rounds out with an exploration of identity and tribalism. Aaron and Erwin challenge the limitations of identity politics, arguing that true identity should be rooted in values, character, and essence rather than surface-level traits. They reflect on their own experiences with cultural diversity and the balance between individualism and belonging, encouraging listeners to build identities that transcend societal labels. This episode of Mind Shift serves as a call to action for deeper thinking, conscious living, and meaningful community. By embracing diverse perspectives, challenging personal biases, and cultivating positive habits, listeners can shift their mindsets and step into a more intentional, purpose-driven life.

CONGESTION PRICING

For those of us who live in New York, mass transit is the norm and traffic is a minor form of apocalypse. In response to this persistent issue, New York City implemented a new congestion pricing plan. https://youtu.be/TeObZEnjmv4?si=fQTxzRCe6b-sGH5F Besides the increased funds for badly-needed infrastructure improvements, the plan made other promises. These also include reduced commute times, better air-quality, and improved safety for all road users. https://www.amazon.com/Movement-Yorks-Long-Take-Streets-ebook/dp/B0CV9FNFWV/ Because the sample size is small, it is an open question of whether congestion pricing has delivered? Can it deliver? And how did we get from the horse and buggy, to the street car, to the train and automobile-based system we have now? Will it apply to other cities in the U.S.? Nicole Gelinas and I took some time to trace New York's transportation history in her new book and analyze the prospects for congestion pricing's effectiveness going forward. (*UPDATE: 20 minutes after we stopped recording on 2/19/25, President Trump announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation was pulling its approval of New York City's congestion pricing plan. Governor Holchul has met, apparently unsuccessfully, with President Trump on the topic. Litigation has already started. STAY TUNED.) NICOLE GELINAS, a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder, is a Manhattan Institute senior fellow and contributing editor to City Journal. She lives in New York City. She is the author of the recent book, Movement: New York's Long War to Take Back Its Streets From the Car. Outline How did you get interested in congestion pricing and the development of transportation in NYC? New York City's Transit History What are some of the "tragedies" (Cross Bronx Expressway / death of streetcar) and "near misses" (The Saving of Washington Square Park and Grand Central Terminal) that we don't know about? How much credit or blame should we give Robert Moses? Congestion pricing- what is it trying to do (and is it trying to do too much)? As a revenue raiser To reduce congestion Help environment Quality of Life What are the early returns on its effectiveness?  (Anecdotally, to me it seems like it is having a positive congestion effect in Manhattan)  Uber/Taxis?  Notwithstanding these initiatives, what about these often empty cars? E-Bikes? Now that the city has addressed cars, what about the safety concerns of motorized bikes? How is the program affecting Westchester, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut?   As a result of these changes, has the air quality shown any improvement? Meanwhile, is London a Success?  Because of its heady reputation of being one of the most forward cities on congestion control, urban planners trot out London as an example for others. Is this warranted? (However, having been there in November, I thought the traffic was insane! ) Did they do other things to screw up a good initiative? Congestion Pricing's Future (*Before Trump's Involvement) I never met an automatic tax that a politician didn't see to expand and the tax is automatically going up by law, Regarding government's growing addiction to revenue, Will the program expand? Will the borders go north? Brooklyn? Queens?  Or can it go backward under Trump? Regardless, does the MTA have the will to cut costs? Notwithstanding the controversy, is there any political will to enhance safety? Wish list: What would be your favorite next NYC transportation initiative? If we want to learn more, what's the best way to get the book and keep track of your work? We do also talk about chapter 21 of Chalice of the Gods, as well as continuing to talk about our future and plans for the podcast. As of right now, new episodes of Prophecy Radio will air every other week, and we'll still keep our discussions PG-13. We are so excited to talk about these casting choices! (00:09:50) We are so proud of ourselves for getting our act together and kicking off our new schedule right away! Daniel Diemer will be bringing Tyson to the screen! Andra Day is absolute perfect embodiment of Athena (we're both in awe). Tamara Smart absolutely looks the part of Thalia Grace, and we can't wait to see how she chooses to play Thalia. Lance Reddick's replacement for Zeus is… We will definitely get at least one episode of season 2 in 2025! Chalice of the Gods refresher (00:26:36) Percy needs to complete 3 quests to get letters so he can join Annabeth at New Rome University. Ganymede, Zeus' cupbearer, to finds the chalice of the gods. He suspects Hebe and Iris. They find a chalice-less Hebe (and her flock of chickens) at her arcade, and after a little creative trickery by Annabeth, our trio learns where they might find Iris. Meet Blanche, daughter of Iris, who loves all things monochrome and death. She promises to introduce them to her mother if Grover poses for some photos. Iris is desperate for her child's approval, so she listens to our favorite trio, and tells them she has a hunch. She won't share that hunch, however, unless our trio does a little quest for her first. While questing, Annabeth befriends a river, Percy almost drowns, Grover gets chased by snakes. Percy gives us his (arguably) most romantic moment yet, and saves himself from mortal peril. Once they return Iris' staff to her, clean as a whistle, she lets them know the chalice is in Greenwich in the possession of someone named Gary, and hands them a vial of pure nectar to help in locating the famous drinking vessel. Chalice of the Gods discussion (00:34:26) Grover arrives to Percy's swim meet in some very specific regalia. Percy is forced to look at Blanche's dreary photos of Grover appearing dead amongst very dead-looking nature. Grover had planned to give one of these photos to Juniper for her Bloom Day present, but she didn't react well to the repeated mentioning of Blanche. Percy advises that Grover admit his stupidity in this moment, and apologize to Juniper. Percy notes that, next to the Greek gods, he's possibly the worst person to give relationship advice. Grover asked the cloud nymphs about Greenwich village, scoping out the scene before they go adventuring there, and they admit to some weird energy around Washington Square Park. While getting Juniper's Bloom Day present right is important, Grover is more concerned with how things are going to work once Percy and Annabeth run off to New Rome University. Percy reassures our favorite satyr that they need him as much as he needs them. They couldn't survive without Grover in their lives. Favorite lines and favorite moments. Feedback! Thank you so much to everyone for all the kinds words on our return. It really means the world to us. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 126, where we'll discuss the big news we missed while we were away, along with Chalice of the Gods chapters 22 & 23. I saw the guy in the picture injecting. I asked if I could take his picture and a brief conversation ensued.Instead of my planned conversation with Dan, we recorded my experience and thoughts about the conversation with the guy injecting on the sidewalk. I haven't edited anything. I recorded with just my headphone microphone so sorry about the audio quality, but I think you'll be able to understand us fine.I also didn't prepare.
