U.S. Midterm Elections 2022: The end of American democracy?

Although a record turnout is expected on Nov. 8th, opinion surveys show many Americans no longer trust U.S. elections nor their government. Many Republican voters still embrace the “Big Lie” that President Trump had the 2020 election stolen from him. So what does the growing mistrust, President Joe Biden's low ratings and the worst inflation in four decades mean for the midterm elections and American democracy in general? In this episode of Transatlantic Takeaway by Common Ground Berlin and the German Marshall Fund of the United States, host Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson explores the controversial elections with: Sudha David-Wilp, GMF's Senior Transatlantic Fellow and deputy director of the Berlin office. Jeremy Shapiro, research director at the European Council on Foreign Relations and a former advisor to the State Department during the Obama administration. Anna Sauerbrey, foreign editor of the weekly Die Zeit and a contributor to the New York Times op-ed section. Produced by Dina Elsayed.

The U.S. President is only one person. Even though he's our country's leader and has a lot of power, he doesn't control everything. In fact, most of what happens in your community as an American citizen happens at a local level—from the schools you attend to the roads you drive on and the police officers who protect you.Your local government oversees all these things, which means voting for people who will make decisions in those areas is extremely important. Their decisions directly affect your life with a huge impact on how happy and safe you feel.So go ahead and check out this video to learn more about why you should take voting in local elections more seriously. The Swordsman Hero and The Jester began asking questions of the young man, starting with who he was and why he was there. The young man told them everything they wanted to know, including who the other churchgoing vampires were. He informed them that they had been using the church as a cover to convert others to vampires, though he had only just recently been turned. The feral vampire had been found some years ago in a nearby cave, and had been brought into the church by a few of the townspeople thinking they could control it. When it realized their plan, it had attacked them. They escaped by trapping it in the basement, but ended up being turned. Realizing the new power they possessed, they came to the conclusion that they could turn others and form a powerful force that they could lead.   Check out our sponsors: Ekster provides high-quality, sleek wallets that you'll love! Ep. Br#005 PEI, in collaboration with SoAS, University of London, has been undertaking a research project that examines how federalism is being operationalized in Nepal. As part of this research, PEI followed the municipal elections held earlier this year in May and produced an election brief highlighting the concerns regarding candidacy selection by political parties and its implications on the potential representation of women and marginalized groups. The brief also pointed out the discontent among local leaders who had lost out on the candidacy, resorting to intra-party feud and violence and defections to rival parties. In this Episode of The Brief, PEI's Shreeya Rana discusses with Anurag Acharya and Avinash Karna the key trends that we have observed in the run-up to the upcoming general elections. These observations are based on PEI's ongoing sub-national research on federalism in Nepal, done in collaboration with SOAS University of London. The research tracks issues of inclusion and representation, the nature of political alliances, the nexus of business and politics, and how this warrants a more vigilant role of the election commission. With Nepal all set for the November 20, 2022, general elections where more than 17.9 million registered voters will directly elect 165 members to the House of Representatives under the first-past-the-post system, while another 110 members will be elected through a proportional representation (PR) system. Anurag is PEI's Director of Practice, with a background in international relations and journalism. He is a well-known political commentator and has written extensively on Nepal and South Asia for national and international publications. Avinash is PEI's coordinator of subnational programs. He has a decade-long experience working in the areas of peacebuilding and governance.

Many candidates are declaring that they will challenge the Midterm results due to election fraud and irregularities. And guess what, they may not be conspiracy theories as we have encountered some election irregularities in Philadelphia. Question: Do you believe the midterms were filled with enough irregularities to warrant a challenge and was your experience like? We woke up this morning to the reality that there was no #redsea as if God had parted the "red sea"; as the GOP seem to be split down the middle with the #TheDemocrats which will preserve the balance! Yet, Trump seemed to be the factor that helped the #dems… and this … I have Breaking News regarding the Midterm Elections 2022 today concerning election irregularities in Philadelphia PA. I discuss and report on this with Ricardo McKenzie and Maurice Smith who are senior professionals in their field and Ricardo is a consultant with a logistics firm and a senior Advisor to the Board at The Neoliberal Corporation, Maurice Smith a brother with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and a City Social and Human Services Professional in Philadelphia. I will share in this episode my experience voting for the first time and what I discovered about some irregular voting practices in my district. Further, Ricardo makes a poignant point how, divided a need divisive we are… he [Donald Trump] pulls out the ugly and shows what the underbelly of America can be. It needed Donald Trump to come to power to demonstrate and realize what was always beneath - how divided and divisive we are. How fragile our society is and how it's necessary for us to combat against this; so that we do not end up in this position that has come to define politics and society…. All four of the victors in statewide races here in Maryland made history last night. Governor-elect Wes Moore became only the third African American to be elected Governor in the United States, and the first Black man to lead our state. His running mate, Lt. Governor elect Aruna Miller, is the first immigrant to be elected statewide. Anthony Brown will be Maryland's first African American Attorney General, and Brooke Lierman will become the state's first woman to be installed as Comptroller in January. None of their victories were unexpected. Election-denying candidates backed by former President Donald Trump in MD fared poorly, as did Trump-backed candidates in Pennsylvania, but other races here and across the country are still too close to call. Today on Midday, recapping and reflecting on the midterms with two keen political observers: Jayne Miller, a veteran reporter who retired this past summer after more than 40 years as an investigative journalist with WBAL-TV. Whether we reach the “doom loop,” or just become mired in stagflation, unchecked government spending and mounting national debt will drain all growth potential from the national economy sooner rather than later. This is everyone's problem.

Star and Jonathan also take time to discuss the importance of voting our faith and our values, and why we unfortunately see far too many voters not doing so. This week on Funky Friday, Cam Newton sits down with former House of Representative and current candidate for the Governor of Georgia, Stacey Abrams. The two talk about the current state of Georgia, whats at stake in the next elections and Stacey Abrams infatuation with roman novels, TV and Star Trek. About Stacey Abrams Stacey Abrams grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi, one of six children whose parents had three tenets: go to church, go to school, and take care of each other. Her father, a shipyard worker, and mother, a college librarian, faced financial hardships of their own, yet they taught their children the value of service to others. No matter how much they struggled to make ends meet, Stacey and her siblings were taught that someone always had less and that it was their job to serve that person. Her parents were also steadfast in seeking the best possible educational opportunities – both for their children and themselves. Education and service, both which remain central to Stacey's identity today, were the impetus for the Abrams family's move to Georgia. Stacey's parents became United Methodist ministers after pursuing graduate studies in Divinity at Emory University. Stacey and her younger siblings attended DeKalb County public schools. She is a graduate of Avondale High School with degrees from Spelman College, the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, and Yale Law School. Follow Cam on Social Media! In this episode of the National Crawford Roundtable the guys take a look at the mid-term elections.  How critical are they?  What is at stake?  What is driving voters to the polls?  What should the Republicans do if they take over the House or the Senate?  Is bi-partisanship good or bad?  Is the media unfairly scrutinizing Republican candidates?  Are they ignoring or failing to report on controversial issues with Liberal candidates?  Do conservative Republicans need to run better candidates and if so, how do we get them?

Dr. Nils Gustafsson, Senior Lecturer of Strategic Communication at Lund University, discusses the run-up to the 2022 Swedish Elections and then findings from his research. First, we chat about the main political issues that Swedes are voting on, as well as how political parties and party leaders are digital campaigning on social media. Then, Dr. Gustafsson shares findings from three of his research projects. We discuss how Facebook was viewed as a tool for participation when it first became widely adopted in Sweden, how rejection sensitivity might affect political expression online, and how media narratives about polarization in Swedish media have changed over time. Here are links to the two published studies we discuss in the episode: The Subtle Nature of Facebook Politics: Swedish Social Network Site Users and Political Participation (2012)A Social Safety Net? A stunning poll from NBC News shows how Americans really feel right now... It comes just as our economy shows additional signs of slowing. I've got the latest on a brand new study suggesting American employers are pulling back on hiring.  Meanwhile, for months, the stock market has seemed pretty out of touch with reality...but, that's now beginning to change and Disney is one of the stocks that may be caught in the hot seat as a result. Find out what one activist investor thinks Disney needs to do to get back on track...it could include a spin-off of ESPN.  Join me for more by subscribing to the podcast by signing up for my newsletter at https://TrishIntel.com.
