The first words of God establish Him in His position of power and authority. We do not need to look to the parting of the Red Sea or any other miraculous event; in the opening words of the Bible, God steps to the edge of existence and speaks all that we know into existence. When God speaks, anything is possible. God establishes principles in Genesis chapter 1 that are still in existence today. He said let each produce after their kind. If you plant corn, you will get corn. If you raise cattle, you will get cattle. God established rules and truths that are in effect today. God established light and separated it from the darkness. He said the light will be called day. He defines the light as day, and the darkness as night. By naming the darkness, he gave it significance and placed it under his dominion. There are days in our lives when everything will be perfect. There will also be times when we suffer in the darkness. Even in the darkness of night, God owns it. God made it clear from the beginning that he has dominion in the day and the dark. The purpose of our night is not to destroy us; The purpose of the dark is to reveal who God is. Most people sleep at night. Scientists have researched sleep and discovered that sleep is a regenerative, cleaning process. While we sleep at night, our brain renovates and restores. The night is a time to restore. Darkness has a purpose in our lives. God uses these dark times to prepare, restore, and reveal Himself to us.

The Spirit of God hovering, brooding, sweeping over, overshadowing the watery chaos at Creation. That same Spirit hovering, brooding, sweeping over, overshadowing the watery chaos of Mary’s womb, and creating within it the Holy Child, the redeemer of the world. Is there anything more worthy of our wonder and worship than this? Rev. Larry Hayward preaches on the Fourth Sunday of Advent. The Scripture lessons are Genesis 1:1-5 and Luke 1:26-38.

I have often said that the world as God created it is one of beauty and harmony, but we live “after the Fall,” and it is that fallen state into which Christ has come as God’s own Son to redeem us. As believers in Christ’s ultimate redemption, we await and live toward “a new heaven and a new earth” that Christ alone will bring. In this reading of the first eleven chapters of Genesis, the differences we experience as human beings – which seem so ever more challenging and violent this week – grow out of the Fall and form part of that from which God promises to redeem us. Rev. Larry Hayward preaches on Pentecost Sunday. The Scripture lesson is Genesis 1:1-5, 26-31, and 11:1-9.

An introduction to the book of Genesis
Little is known of Jacob’s children. Asher was born to Jacob from Leah’s maid Zilpah. And Moses pronounced what seems to be the greatest blessing upon him.

In the second part of the Nicene Creed, Jesus is described as Lord, Christ, and Son of God. One who is begotten, not made; of the same essence as the Father. We look to understand what is being said and how these terms might help us in better perceiving the nature of God and the person of Jesus.

Ever notice that some names are reserved for only your deepest relationships? It's almost as if some names define how close you are. Could it be the same with God? In the series Trust Issues, we look at a new name for God each week, exploring how each reveals an aspect of his identity and how he wants to relate to you.

The most basic question every human has to answer is "Who Is God?" It takes a mix of reason and faith to believe in God, or to NOT believe in God.

Where do babies come from? That's a question parents of preschoolers get asked when they are expecting another child. And there are MANY different ways to answer that question. Where did we come from? That's another question that many adults ask, at some point in their life. How did life on Earth get here? How do we know? Where did we come from? The ANSWER to question matters now more than ever...perhaps more so that in the past 500 years. In this message, Max Vanderpool teaches on Genesis 1 and the story of creation.

You cannot expect victory and plan for defeat. Our mouths hold the key to either victory or defeat. Using words that advance God's purposes are vital to overcoming every obstacle in life.

One way to look at the Biblical narrative is too think of it as a play or drama. The first act sets the stage and so today we look at Genesis 1 as Act One in this magnificent drama.

Baptism is like a second chance, a new start, and it brings us into a life of new starts which God offers as we continually do the wrong things, learn from those missteps, and try again to live well. These second chances, however, should not be taken lightly or wasted. When we intentionally turn our lives back toward a harmful way we had been living, we are turning our backs on God's forgiveness and God's second chance. When we do so, there is often hell to pay...not eternal damnation, but hurt and damage in this life. Living in the way of Jesus, on the other hand also has a cost. While God's forgiveness and second chances are freely given, the cost is how we live afterwards. While not very catchy, I'd say there's "heaven to pay." The cost of baptism, of following Jesus, is intentionally living as he taught, intentionally living so in such a way that if something is harmful to self or others, we won't do those things. We live the Kingdom Way, God's life of light and love.
By the sheer power of His Word, the Triune God brings the physical universe into existence. He rejoices in His creation saying, "It is very good."
