Send us a textPastor Eric helps us wrestle with slaves and masters and how the gospel invites us into the imbalanced power structures of the world.Support the showThe Village Church's sermon podcast is more than just a weekly message. It is an invitation into the great and ongoing story of God's work in the world. Pastors Eric, Mark, Susan, Daniel, and other leaders open the Scriptures not as a collection of abstract ideas but as the living, breathing witness to God's kingdom breaking into our midst. Each episode is a call—not merely to listen, but to take part, to step forward into the life of faith with renewed vision and purpose. Week by week, the pastors and leaders explore the deep rhythms of Christian discipleship—prayer, fasting, generosity—not as isolated duties but as part of a larger, richer, and more beautiful whole. They unpack these ancient practices in light of Jesus himself, the one in whom heaven and earth have come together. But they also turn their attention to the realities of everyday life—relationships, finances, the struggles and joys of being human—demonstrating how the gospel is not merely about what we believe but about how we live as God's renewed people in the present age. Tune in to today's episode as we dive deeper into the crumbling power dynamics of our world. We're continuing our discussion on aliens and exiles, moving from how we relate to governing structures to how we respond to employers—and even slave owners in the ancient context, and...today? What do we do with Peter's call to submit to those in charge, even when they're less than desirable? Are we suffering for doing good, or are we suffering because we're bringing trouble on ourselves? Also, a quick shoutout to A Beck Creations—the amazing coffee gifted to the guys in a previous episode! You can check them out at:

Within Christian doctrine, there are said to be 3 mysterious unions. The first, of course, is the Trinity - the Godhead three in one. The second is the incarnation - that Jesus was simultaneously both God and man. And the third, Dr. Boice addresses in this message on Marriage. What does the Bible say about slavery? And how was slavery similar or different to the way we view it today? Why didn't Paul or Jesus outright condemn the institution? And what is Paul's counsel to Christian slaves and masters in the first century? Jeff explains in today's teaching from Ephesians 6.

Speaker: Jeff Hunt | Series: Around the Table | Passage: Ephesians 1 Peter 2:11-25
Like it or not, slavery has existed for a long time and it existed when Jesus was walking on the earth. When Paul was traveling around on his missionary journeys, he met many slaves and masters. He includes them in his letter to the church at Ephesus and he encourages them to work towards unity by being obedient. The key for God to be glorified in our lives, whether slave or free, is unity. From husbands and wives, their children, to slaves and their masters, we all have to get rid of all selfishness, fleshly desires, put others first, listen to one another, be obedient to instruction, and remember who we serve, God.
How the roles of slaves and masters point us to the Gospel.

3-3-24 | Part 8 of our Colossians sermons series, "Slaves and Masters". Today's Bible verses are Colossians 2:22-4:6. When Paul wrote his letter to the church in Colosse from prison, he taught them that Christ is all that matters. Not religious rituals, not current culture teaching, but Christ is enough. This series looks verse-by-verse in the book of Colossians to see what the Holy Spirit is telling the Church about how to live as the body of Christ.

Introduction: The sermon begins by setting the historical context of slavery in Roman times, clarifying that it differed significantly from the chattel slavery known in American history.Biblical Text and Interpretation: Ephesians 6 is examined, highlighting instructions for both slaves and masters. The focus is on obeying and serving as unto Christ, not just human masters.Principles for Modern Application: The sermon applies these principles to modern employer-employee relationships, advocating for respect, sincerity, and service in the workplace.Motivation for Work: Emphasis is placed on working for the glory of Christ, not merely for personal gain or recognition.Equality Before God: The sermon stresses that in Christ, there is no distinction between slave and master, as all are equal before God.Practical Implications for Employers and Employees: It calls for employers to treat employees justly and with dignity, recognizing them as fellow image-bearers of God.Spiritual Application: The sermon ties the themes of work, obedience, and authority to the broader Christian life, urging believers to view their work as a means of glorifying God.Conclusion: It concludes with a reminder that our actions in the workplace can lead others to Christ and should reflect our commitment to Him.
Today, we justly look with abhorrence at slavery. It has not been that way throughout all of history. Slavery has been practiced in various manners, even in biblical times. Listen as Dr. John teaches on Paul's commands in Colossians to both slaves and masters. We are reminded that any condition can be a vehicle of grace for God's glory. The True Christian: There are forgery works of art hanging undetected in museums. They look authentic but are false. There can be false Christians in our congregations. It can be hard to discern the fake from the authentic. The book of Colossians is aimed at understanding the real Jesus and being real Jesus followers. This series of messages by Dr. John Neufeld will clarify our beliefs and fortify our living of the truth in Jesus Christ.

God gives instructions on how slaves were to act toward their masters and how masters were toward their slaves. For many modern readers, this makes us uncomfortable and leaves us confused. We assume that instructions are inferred endorsements but this couldn't be further from the truth. Join me as we dive into this challenging text and discover how Christianity is the moral code that led to slavery being seen as what it is, evil. Pastor Jeff Lewis preaches on Ephesians 6:5-9.
There are two strong Christian traditions when it comes to robust political or industrial action such as strikes. One argues for enduring oppression and unfair employment in the manner of Jesus and points to Paul's teaching in the Bible on slaves and masters. But a second position throws its weight behind efforts to challenge injustice and protect the vulnerable, noting Jesus's clear teaching on care for the widow, orphan and stranger. In this episode we consider these two strands of Christian thinking and how they end up being applied, sometimes poorly, to the question of public servants going on strike. And is there a third response to the paralysis and conflict which has erupted in British society – the distinctively Christian virtue of reconciliation? The Bible was written in a very different age and time. One of the challenges of studying scripture is learning how to understand its meaning then and now. Certainly one of those challenging topics is Paul's advice to slaves and masters. In today's episode, Pastor Jim takes a closer look at that advice, giving it historical context and helping us recognize what it says to us today. As the pastoral epistles previously reminded us, all scripture is God-breathed and useful. It's true even of hard passages like today's.
