Be Bold & Be ObedientLuke 1:38 “Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.”This month in mentoring, the theme is “For Such A Time As This.” Last week, I talked about Joseph and Moses and how they were in the perfect place at the perfect time. It wasn't an easy road for them to get there. They were both broken and then they were positioned. Then I talked about Mary and Deborah. I explored how they went from being obedient to Empowered. This morning, we will look at how saying yes to God can change everything.“Obedience isn't about perfection. It's about saying yes to God—even when it doesn't make sense.” Often, God will ask us to do something, and we have no idea why he is asking us to do it. We don't feel qualified. We don't understand the plan, and sometimes, we just really don't want to do it. Also, God often asks for our 'yes' before He reveals the full plan. This is why obedience is so important. Our yes allows God to work within us and through us.Obedience is the bridge between calling and empowerment. So what this means is that being called to do something isn't enough—you don't just instantly arrive at empowerment. The way to get from calling to being empowered to carry it out is through obedience: taking steps in faith, even when it's hard, unclear, or uncomfortable. In other words, “You may have a purpose, but your obedience activates the power to walk in it.”Let's talk about Mary first. Mary was a young, willing vessel. Let's listen to Mary's Yes to the Lord in Luke 1:26-38. “In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom, there will be no end.” Mary said to the angel, “How can this be since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the child to be born[c] will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth, in her old age, has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then, the angel departed from her.To Summarize:- God chose a young, ordinary girl to carry the Savior of the world.- Mary responded in faith, not fully understanding. Do you think if Mary had known the complete story, she would have said yes? This could be why we don't always know the full story before we have to answer, either. The person we are when we say Yes to the Lord is probably not the same person we will be at the end of the story. Mary was young when she said yes to all the Lord had planned for her. She was not the same young girl when she was sitting at the foot of the cross. She had many other experiences in her life that prepared her and trained her to be the woman she was at the foot of the cross.Mary's obedience unlocked the miracle of Jesus entering the world. Mary had free will, just like the rest of us. What if she had said no? Where would we be right now? Thank goodness for Mary's obedience! Now, we will talk about Deborah. Deborah was a prophetess and the only female judge mentioned in the Bible. Her story is found in Judges 4–5. She led Israel during a time of oppression under the Canaanite king Jabin and his army commander Sisera. Her position was that of Judge and Prophetess of Israel during the era of the Judges before Israel had kings. She provided wisdom, judgment, and spiritual leadership. People came to her for decisions and guidance. She summoned Barak, a military leader, and told him God commanded him to go to war against Sisera. (Judges 4:14) Barak agreed—but only if Deborah went with him. She did.Israel defeated the Canaanite army, and Sisera was ultimately killed by a woman named Jael. Deborah was a worshipper and Poet: Judges 5 records the Song of Deborah, a victory hymn celebrating God's deliverance and the bravery of those who fought. To Summarize:- She was a prophetess and judge in a time when women had little influence.- Her obedience in speaking and leading brought victory.- She led with courage, wisdom, and worship (Judges 5).What Obedience Looks Like1. **Saying Yes in the Unknown** - Mary didn't have all the answers. Yet she said yes anyway. - Obedience requires trust more than clarity. Mary could say yes because she knew it was the Lord asking, and she knew she could trust the Lord.2. **Speaking When It's Risky** - Deborah spoke with authority even when it challenged norms. I am sure it was frowned upon at that time for a woman, even if she was a judge, to tell a military captain to go to war. Yet she did it anyway. Can you think of other people in the Bible who spoke up even when it was Risky? - Your voice can unlock someone else's breakthrough. Can you imagine that? Can you imagine having the courage to speak up, even when risky, could unlock someone else's breakthrough? Has this happened to you before? Have you said something, and then someone else has had a breakthrough because of it? This happens a lot when praying over people for the prophetic word. Speaking the prophetic word to people takes courage because you aren't sure if what you are hearing is from the Lord or if it is just your own voice getting in your head. We tend to dismiss what we hear because it is far easier to believe that we are making stuff up than to believe that God is talking to us.However, God does talk to us. When we are brave and step out in faith and tell someone the prophetic word we hear from them, the word we hear may cause them to have a breakthrough. It is so beautiful to witness this, to see them realize how much God loves them and how much He really knows them.3. **Moving Despite Fear** - Courage isn't the absence of fear; it's action in the face of it. My brother has this quote at the end of all of his emails, and I remember the first time I read it, I loved it. There will be times you want to quit every good thing you do in this life, persist. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the mastery of it. If God is asking you to do something, trust that he will give you the courage you need to do it!4. **Worshiping Through the Process** - Both Mary and Deborah responded with songs of praise. - Worship shifts our focus from fear to faith. When We Obey, God Empowers- Obedience invites the Holy Spirit to move through us.- Empowerment is not about control or power but about being vessels of God's glory.- God equips those He calls—He never asks for a yes without backing it up with power. You may not feel qualified to do the thing God is asking you to do. However, He wouldn't be asking if He wasn't going to give you all you needed to do the job. If you feel unqualified, join the club. I don't remember reading a single story in the Bible where the person felt qualified to do what they were called to do. Except David when fighting Goliath, and this was only because he knew that he wasn't fighting Goliath alone. He knew the Lord was on his side and would defeat Goliath. Imagine how braver we would all be if we knew that, too.I want to leave you with these last thoughts.- You don't need to have it all figured out.- God honors your yes.- He turns willing hearts into powerful instruments.- Your obedience today could be the key to someone else's miracle tomorrow.I am also going to give you some questions to think about. I gave these to those in mentoring but they are great questions for all of us to think about today.1. **What is God asking you to say yes to?**2. **Where do you need to trust more and understand less?**3. **Who might be waiting for you to rise up like Deborah?**4. **What can you praise God for in the middle of your obedience?**If you have some time today, sit with the Lord and answer these questions together!Dear Heavenly Father, thank you to all those listening to this episode. Lord, I ask you to bless them and their families. Lord, we want to be obedient. Please help us. Help us to get out of our own heads. Help us to remember that if you are for us, who could be against us? Help us remember that you will give us the strength and courage to get everything done. If you call us, you will equip us. You will help us find the time, strength, and whatever else we need to do this thing you are calling us to do. We love you, Lord, and we are so grateful you never leave us alone to do these things. You are always there to do them with us. Thank you. We pray all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus's holy name. In 1 Kings 18, after three years of drought and famine, the Lord speaks again to Elijah: “Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.” This is fascinating – Elijah now knows that rain is coming, but the exact timing hasn't been revealed. There are still key events that must unfold first. Elijah encounters Obadiah, Ahab's servant, who is out searching the land for any sign of water or grass in hopes of keeping some of the livestock alive. Elijah tells him to go inform Ahab that he is in the area. But Obadiah is afraid – he worries the Spirit of the Lord might whisk Elijah away again, and if Elijah disappears, Ahab will surely kill him in his fury. Still, Obadiah delivers the message, and in verse 17, Ahab and Elijah finally meet. Ahab accuses Elijah, saying, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?” It's ironic – this wicked, idolatrous king blames Elijah for the nation's suffering. But Elijah boldly responds: “I have not made trouble for Israel, but you and your father's family have. You have abandoned the Lord's commands and followed the Baals” (v18). What follows is one of the most dramatic moments in the Old Testament. Elijah calls for a challenge – he summons the prophets of Baal to prove once and for all who the true God is. He declares, “The God who answers by fire – He is God!” The prophets of Baal go first, preparing their altar and crying out to their god. They even cut themselves in desperation. But nothing happens—no fire, no voice, no response. Elijah mocks them, knowing full well their so-called gods are lifeless and powerless. Then it's Elijah's turn. He rebuilds the altar with stones, arranges the wood, places the sacrifice on it—and then does something extraordinary: he drenches everything with water. Not once, but with twelve barrels of water, until the sacrifice, the wood, and even the trench around the altar are soaked. It raises a good question – where did he even get all that water in the middle of a drought? But more importantly, Elijah sets the stage for an impossible miracle. And then he prays. As Elijah calls on the name of the Lord, fire falls from heaven – consuming not only the waterlogged sacrifice and wood, but even the stones and the water in the trench. It's a breathtaking, undeniable act of divine power. God answers, and there's no doubt left about who the real God is.
In 1 Kings 17, God instructed Elijah, “Go to a widow in Zarephath near Sidon – she will provide for you.” So Elijah obeyed. When he arrived, he saw the woman gathering sticks and said to her, “Please bring me some water – and a piece of bread as well.” She responded, “There's a severe famine in the land. I have almost nothing – just a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I'm gathering wood to bake one last meal for my son and me. After that, we expect to die.” Elijah said, “Don't be afraid. Go ahead and make the bread – but make a small cake for me first. Then prepare something for you and your son. For this is what the Lord says: The jar of flour will not run out, and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.” She did exactly as Elijah instructed, and just as God had promised, the flour never ran out, and the oil never failed. Day after day, in the middle of a drought and famine, her household was sustained. This is a powerful illustration of what happens when we trust God. While the world may be in chaos – scarcity all around – God's provision never fails. The flour represents physical sustenance, and the oil often symbolizes anointing. Neither ran dry because God's word stood firm. But the story doesn't end there. Before Elijah ever reached Mount Carmel and called down fire from heaven, the widow faced another crisis: her son fell gravely ill and died. In her grief, she cried out, thinking God was punishing her for past sins. Elijah took the lifeless boy, carried him to his own room, laid him on the bed, and stretched himself out over him three times. He cried out to the Lord, and God heard his prayer – the child came back to life.
Have you felt like God told you He was going to do something in your life, and He hasn't done it yet? Are you waiting on promises from God? Has God told you to do something, and you are struggling with it? Trust me when I tell you... I've been there. In today's episode, I will be going over how God always provides, comes through, and fulfills His promises to us. I will be pairing this with prayer, scripture, and a story time. Enjoy! Sermon recording from Sunday, April 6th, 2025.A study of Isaiah 50:4-11.Thesis: The obedient suffering of Christ is the light of our lives.
The record of physicians standing up for their values as healers under authoritarian regimes is not good, whether it's Nazi Germany, the former Soviet Union, or Iraq, with behaviors ranging from assisting in torture, to psychiatric hospitalization for political reasons. And sadly, it's often without any coercion. More subtly, physicians may go along with authoritarian regimes' demands, thinking they can just "stay above the fray." But is that possible? Already, other professional institutions, including academia and law, have struck deals in the hope they they can move on, rather than defend academic freedom or long-standing legal principles. What's in store for medicine? Some might say “not much” -- physicians must simply continue to take good care of their patients. But some are already acceding to orders to abandon care to certain populations, including trans people and refugees; or to compromise privacy. And professional organizations are saying little about looming cuts that would curtail access to care for millions of Americans. One scholar of authoritarianism, Timothy Snyder has written, “When political leaders set a negative example, professional commitments to just practice become more important. Authoritarians need obedient servants.” In this episode, two physicians wrestle with what those commitments are, and how we hold on to them.
BetterMan has been on the road the last few weeks. And we have felt that the messages that have been shared at recent conferences need to be heard by all. This week Dr. Bartholomew Orr of Brown Missionary Baptist Church. Shares about being Obedient and devoted to God's Word.

If we obey the Word of God, what we have will not run dry until God fulfills every promise. There is a great responsibility on us to obey God; our obedience will affect unbelievers. If we as individuals, and collectively as the Church, are disobedient as King Ahab was in 1 Kings 16:33, then God's anger is roused. We are called to be 'salt and light'. Salt is a purifer and preserver; if the salt loses it's saltiness, it is of no use anymore. There is a danger today that the Church is abandoning the commands of the Lord to adjust to society; I cannot overemphasise this need to obey God's Word. 'Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.” 'Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.” 'So he did what the Lord had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there. The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. Then the word of the Lord came to him: “Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.” So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?” As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.” “As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don't have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.” 'Elijah said to her, “Don't be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.'”' (1 Kings 17.1-14, NIV)

What if obedience isn't weakness, but a superpower? In this episode of The Manly Catholic, we dive into Saint Joseph's title "Joseph Most Obedient" during our Lenten series. For Catholic men, this episode reframes obedience as strength, not submission, challenging us to align our will with God's. Fathers, to your kids? Priests, to your flock? If not, we're failing. This isn't about being a doormat—it's about choosing God over ego, passions, or unjust laws.Your challenge today, men: sit with God for two minutes. In this episode, Derek and Brittany continue on in our Lent series. Now into Week 2, they look at both Luke 22:1-34 and John 13:1-17, each relating to different aspects of the Last Supper that Jesus had with His disciples. Together, they discuss the role of our focus on Jesus and the obedience we are called to. When we focus on Jesus and understand what He is doing , we are better equipped to act like Jesus and reflect His upside down kingdom in the midst of the pressures of the world.

In this week's episode, Candy shares the two critical aspects of following Jesus - willingness and obedience. Looking at the miracle of Lazarus, our faith is challenged by the question: are we willing to trust Him only if He does "it" the way I think He should? Oftentimes, we are willing, but lack the action of stepping out in complete faith and obedience. The life of a believer requires we take Him at His Word, even when it doesn't look how we want or expect or when He doesn't do it the way we think He should. Listen and join us as we seek to live fully surrendered - to be both willing and obedient!

Our modern culture often prescribes obedience to societal norms and external authorities as a safeguard against relational harm. Yet, when unprocessed pain and emotional dysregulation seep into our inner narrative, they create a fertile ground for paranoia—a hyper-vigilance that distorts our capacity to recognize genuine connection.
