Wee Companions Small Animal Adoption, Inc. is a 501(c)(3)Our specialty is small furry exotics including, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, mice and rabbits. Wee Companions has been rescuing small animals since 1998. Since inception, we have taken in over 15,500 animals. This is quite a feat when you realize that we are a volunteer-based organization that is operated out of individual homes. Our funding comes from the generosity of supporters like you, we receive no government monies.Mission Statement:Our mission is to rescue guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, and other small exotic mammals from shelters, places of abandonment, and from persons relinquishing their pets. Whenever possible, we offer a safe house to these animals, irrespective of age, temperament, or health status. These animals will receive veterinary care and socialization in the hopes that they will be placed in a "forever" home. Animals given Sanctuary Status will be placed in our Foster Care Network to live out their lives in comfort and with love. We are also focused on educating foster parents, school children and others on the care, feeding and prevention of unwanted litters of these animals.Fenella Speece, PresidentIn 1996 Fenella visited an adoption event in Balboa Park and became the proud “mum” of a male guinea pig called Sam. As a newcomer to San Diego, this was her first exposure to the local rescue community. Hearing that many small animals were in need of rescue, Fenella joined with other fellow small animal lovers to create the foundation of Wee Companions. She was instrumental in establishing the rescue as a 501(c)(3) and has remained the President of the rescue since 2003.An RN with a special passion for small animals, she has led the volunteer based organization to become a respected, thriving rescue and adoption agency that networks with shelters all over California. She has travelled to the UK to study at the renowned Cavy Hospital at Cambridge Cavy Trust, and has established working relationships with multiple vets who support her work and help care for the rescue animals.Being an animal lover, she is usually surrounded by her dogs, cats, tortoises, rabbits and guinea pigs. She loves sitting by her pond enjoying her Koi fish or riding her horses. “I can't imagine life without my animals, we are all connected and here to take care of each other.”#

Hello friends, and welcome back to The Best of LKN podcast. I have a really special episode for you today. If you've been following The Best of LKN for a while, you may recall an article we wrote for the blog featuring the 9 Top Lake Norman Realtors on Instagram. The idea of the article was to share some Instagram marketing advice for small business owners from a few of the most prolific professionals in the Lake Norman area. I felt very lucky to have received input for that article from THE MOST followed Lake Norman real estate agent on Instagram, Tracy Pray Bradshaw. Tracy is an agent/broker with Allen Tate Lake Norman. When Tracy and I connected, we talked at length about the article we were writing and how she could contribute, and during those discussions, Tracy introduced me to a charity fundraising initiative she created back in 2018 that benefits foster kids in the Lake Norman community. I knew immediately that this was something I wanted to share with our audience, so I invited Tracy to join me on the podcast to share the story of her fundraising event - Pop Up Holiday House.Pop Up Holiday House was launched in 2018. Tracy's vision was a luxury parade of homes style event that would gather select vendors of premium goods and services, and showcase one of the premier homes in the Lake Norman area. I'll let Tracy share the details about the event in our conversation, but suffice to say for now that the event was an immediate success and continues to grow in scale year after year. The beneficiary of the Pop Up Holiday House charity fundraiser is the Children's Homes of Iredell County. The goal: to provide a Christmas experience for kids in foster care. Joining us in this episode is Brenda Speece. Brenda served with the Children's Homes of Iredell County for over 30 years, and recently retired as their Executive Director. In this conversation, Brenda shares how the Pop Up Holiday House event has helped make a positive impact on the lives of the children in foster care.Stay with us after the conversation so I can give you more details on how to get involved with the Pop Up Holiday House this year. For now, lean in with me, and get to know Tracy Pray Bradshaw, Brenda Speece, and the Pop Up Holiday House fundraiser for the Childrens Homes of Iredell County. The Children's Homes of Iredell CountyPop Up Holiday HousePartners:Cozy Boutique: Saturday, November 6th - 10am-5pmLilly & Grace with Michelle McCoy Designs: Saturday, November 13th - 10am-5pmTrump National Golf Club: Saturday, November 20th - 9am-1pmTracy Pray Bradshaw was featured in the article “9 Top Lake Norman Realtors Share Their Best Instagram Marketing Advice.” Read it HERE.Special thanks to Tiffany Ringwald Photography.Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/epicjourneymedia)

Northern California's giant redwoods are among the state's most recognizable natural wonders. These massive trees were also under threat of clear-cut logging for much of the twentieth century, writes Darren Frederick Speece in Defending Giants: The Redwood Wars and the Transformation of American Environmental Politics (University of Washington Press, 2017). The book is an exhaustive study of the California timber industry and the environmentalists who used a wide range of tactics, from sit ins and sabotage to courtroom battles, to protect redwood ecosystems. Speece takes a bottom up approach to this history, telling the story from the perspective of the myriad individuals on both sides of the battle who shaped Pacific Coast environmental politics in the mid to late twentieth century. Defending Giants argues that historians of environmentalism have focused too much on birds-eye, national-level politics and have missed the important front line work performed by rural activists, who often put their lives on the line in protection of forests at risk of disappearing forever. Defending Giants is also available as an audio book from University Press Audio Books. Stephen Hausmann is a doctoral candidate at Temple University and Visiting Instructor of history at the University of Pittsburgh. For 54 years, the friendly greeting “Hello there, good friends” resonated over WNAX radio waves throughout the Midwest, delivering trusted recipes, words of advice, and Yankton’s most reliable neighbor lady—Wynn Speece. From 1941-2005, Speece, a South Dakotan radio icon of the 20 th century, broadcasted live shows featuring letters from faithful listeners, interviews with both national and hometown celebrities, and numerous household tips. Beginning in 1949 with the birth of her first child, Speece began broadcasting from her own dining room table, conversing with women throughout South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska. In June of 1995, Chuck Anderson visited Speece and her husband Harry at this unconventional studio to chat about her rise to radio fame. Growing up and attending high school in Des Moines, Iowa, Speece caught the “radio bug” early on. Speece went on to pursue a dual degree from Drake University in Theatre and Speech/English. She graduated in 1939 and
