In this episode of The Coaching Inn, host Claire Pedrick engages in a profound discussion with Naomi Ward and Fenella Trevillion about the complexities of coaching in diverse environments. We explore the importance of acknowledging differences, the impact of race and identity, and the necessity of vulnerability and discomfort in coaching relationships. The conversation emphasises the need for self-reflection and the role of coaches in fostering inclusive spaces where all individuals feel seen and heard. The episode concludes with a call to action for coaches to reflect on their practices and the role they play in promoting inclusion and safety. Takeaways: Coaching in diverse settings requires awareness of group dynamics. Acknowledging differences can create a more inclusive coaching environment. Personal experiences shape coaching practices and philosophies. Race and identity significantly impact coaching relationships. Discomfort can be a powerful tool for growth in coaching. Vulnerability is essential for building trust in coaching. Self-reflection is crucial for understanding one's biases. Coaches must challenge assumptions about safety in coaching spaces. Inclusion in coaching is a shared responsibility among all coaches. The role of coaching extends beyond individual development to societal impact. Keywords: coaching, inclusion, diversity, vulnerability, discomfort, self-reflection, race, identity, group dynamics, personal growth Sound Bites: "How can we traverse our differences?" "I see you in the way you want to be seen." "We don't grow in comfort." "Discomfort is our friend." "What is the role of coaching in this moment?" "The violence of coaching." "This is a safe space." Addiction - the word within itself carries a weight to it that feels scary and removed to the majority. But the reality of it is, and like we have heard before, addiction doesn’t discriminate. Fenella Scarlett McCall is one of the many examples, who from the outside looking in, you would never suspect she had struggled with addiction. Fenella was from a privileged loving family, private school educated, had successful career driven parents along with creative and successful older siblings, and if when talking superficially - she has a beauty that was matched with what was considered to be confidence and coolness that other girls growing up, dreamt of having. Her reality was very different from the outside perception that others had, and Fenella now speaks to the loneliness, lack of confidence and being unaware of her right to say no when it came to substance use and consensual sex, that she now realises all contributed to her spiral into addiction. The Fenella of today, has been through hell and back trying to piece herself together mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally with the purpose of understanding how her prior experiences and traumas impacted her and led her to make decisions that ultimately broke her and caused unbearable shame. Now, after years of support from mental health services along with studying to become a clinical psychologist, she has a greater capacity to understand and accept how she ended up in a negative vicious cycle of substance abuse. Fenella shares how some of the best healing and growth has come from hearing and identifying with others who like her, found ways to break the negative downward cycle and create positive lives filled with connection and joy. Following the 1906 poem of William Gell, Mannin Veg Veen, he's brought us to St Patrick's Isle, and he mentions the figure of Fenella from Sir Walter Scott's 1823 novel, Peveril of the Peak. We look at part of Sir Walter's description of Fenella from Chapter Sixteenth, as it appears in his book, before resuming a rapid journey up the west coast to the Point of Ayre.As it is pantomime season, we have a Manx translation of a story from the Brothers Grimm which has been used as the basis for many a seasonal presentation. As usual with the Brothers Grimm, there is a rather grittier element to it than usually appears on stage. As y kiaull ain son y chlaare s'jerree roish y Nollick as y Vlein Noa -CLASH VOOAR - Roie, ben Juan TammyJOHN, GUTO & ANGHARAD LEWIS - Baban IesuHORSLIPS - The piper in the meadow strayingELIANE PRONOST & GERARD PONDEVEN - Pe trouz war an douarNY LUGHEE - Shoh slaynt rish deiney daaney/Share dooin loayrtMIKE O'CONNOR - God's dear sonFIONA J MacKENZIE - Duan NollaigKATELL KLOAREG - Al laouenanig hag ar voc'hruzigJOHN KIRKPATRICK - Hunt the wren

In this episode, I catch up with my friend Fenella, who's been sober for nearly four years now. Her story is truly profound. Fenella battled Anorexia during her teens, a struggle that nearly took her life. It all started with a cry for attention from her parents, but it quickly spiraled into something much darker. As she got a grip on her eating disorder, Fenella turned to alcohol to numb her anxiety. What began as a few drinks a day soon escalated into daily binges, leading to frequent blackouts and numerous trips to the hospital, including a harrowing incident where she had to be resuscitated. Despite several attempts at rehab, alcohol kept creeping back into her life, each binge more intense than the last. One particularly chaotic night fueled by alcohol led to Fenella accusing her partner Joe of abuse, resulting in his arrest, a moment she can't recall due to her intoxicated state. It's been quite the wild ride.Though Fenella's journey might not be easy to hear, it's ultimately a story of hope and redemption. She finally found freedom from alcohol with the help of some tough loving ex-alcoholics in Africa. Dr Leah Broad's book Quartet tells the story of four women composers who have received little or no attention by the classical music world. The lives of Ethyl Smyth, Dorothy Howell, Rebecca Clarke and Doreen Carwithen span the 20th century and yet their music was, until a few years ago, relatively unheard of. Quartet - a substantial history of four women's compositional lives - explains why. Following publication, Leah Broad and violinist Fenella Humphreys have joined forces with pianist Nicola Eimer, mounting a series of concerts across the country where curious audience members can hear not only the music but selected stories about the women who wrote it. There were two things apparent from the event I attended - the first in the trio's UK tour in Harrogate earlier in the summer. The carefully selected music works in performance (so much so that the programmed movements played made me want to hear the works in their entirety) AND the briefest of introductions works wonders at focussing the listener, enhancing the experience as a result. Leah, Fenella and I met up to discuss the book, the concerts and the impact good storytelling has on the concert experience. Lost Voices is at Snape on 9th August, and Milton Court Concert Hall, Barbican on 5 November. An old map. A lost pilgrimage route. A journey in search of our walking heritage. When Henry VIII banned pilgrimage in 1538, he ended not only a centuries-old tradition of walking as an act of faith, but a valuable chance to discover the joy of walking as an escape from the burdens of everyday life. Much was lost when these journeys faded from our collective memory, but clues to our past remain. On an antique map in Oxford's Bodleian Library, a faint red line threading through towns and villages between Southampton and Canterbury suggests a significant, though long-forgotten, road. Renamed the Old Way, medieval pilgrims are thought to have travelled this route to reach the celebrated shrine of Thomas Becket. Described as England's Camino, this long-distance footpath carves through one of the nation's most iconic landscapes—one that links prehistoric earthworks, abandoned monasteries, Saxon churches, ruined castles and historic seaports. Over four seasons, travel writer Gail Simmons walks the Old Way to rediscover what a long journey on foot offers us today. In the age of the car, what does it mean to embrace 'slow travel'? Why does being a woman walking alone still feel like a radical act? In an age when walking connects the nation, can we now reclaim pilgrimage as a secular act? Winding 250 miles between the chalk hills and shifting seascapes of the south coast, Gail ventures deep into our past, exploring this lost path and telling a story of kings and knights, peasants and pilgrims, of ancient folklore and modern politics. Blending history, anthropology, etymology and geology, Gail's walk along the Old Way reveals the rich natural and cultural heritage found on our own doorstep.
An intimate weaving of memoir and herbal folklore, All My Wild Mothers is a story of rewilding our wastelands and the transformation that can happen when we do. At seven months pregnant, Victoria Bennett was looking forward to new motherhood and all that was to come. But when the telephone rang, the news she received changed everything. Her eldest sister had died in a canoeing accident. Five years later, struggling with grief, the demands of being a parent-carer for her young son, and the impact of deeper austerity, life feels very different to the future she had imagined. A move to a new social housing estate in rural Cumbria offers Victoria and her family a chance to rebuild their lives. Constructed over an industrial site, at first the barren ground seems an unlikely place to sow the seeds of a new life. She and her son set about transforming the rubble around them into a wild apothecary garden. Daisy, for resilience. Dandelion, for strength against adversity. Red campion, to ward off loneliness. Sow thistle, to lift melancholy. Borage, to bring hope in dark and difficult times. Stone by stone, seed by seed, All My Wild Mothers is the story of how sometimes life grows, not in spite of what is broken, but because of it.

Recorded the day before the Ironman World Championships in Kona: Okay, Feisty Friends...tomorrow is the big day! Who will come out of the water first? Who will be the first off the bike? And who will win? For the first time, we have 50 pro-women racing at the Ironman World Championships, and we couldn't be more excited. Today, we talk to Kelly O'Mara about how she feels about the race, and who her top podium picks are. Of course, everyone is betting on Daniella Ryf, but what about Fenella, Sarah, Lucy, and all the rest? Finally, we hear Sara's top podium picks - or maybe better, "her sentimental picks". Fenella Langridge is an absolute comedian on her social media. Bringing a whole new energy to triathlon, Haley, and Alyssa invite Fenella onto the show to discuss her outlook on the sport - and of course, her recent races. Coming in 8th at the world championships in St. George, and 2nd at Challenge Roth - Fenella in undeniably making a name for herself in the Pro Women's field. After a DNF at the PTO Canadian Open in July, and unfortunately, another at the recent PTO US Open, Fenella is suspecting long covid as the culprit. We are wishing Fenella a fast recovery and hoping that long covid doesn't last too long, and she can have a great race in Kona. Immerse yourself in this fast-paced middle-grade fantasy about magic ink, a secret society and a boy who yearns to make his mark. When their father goes missing after a mysterious train crash, Everett and his little sister, Bea, find a curious pen in his belongings, and its magical Ink begins to rewrite their once-ordinary lives. The Ink leads them to a world they never knew existed—one teeming with impossible magic, formidable allies and villains who are determined to destroy everything they hold dear. Together, Everett and Bea embark on an adventure through secret tunnels in England and Scotland to find and protect the last Inkwell, and ultimately to save their father. But in order to do so, Everett must find a way to tap into the most magical power of all: his courage. This classic battle of good and evil pits creativity against the forces that would seek to blot it out for good.

Fi Glover presents four conversations between strangers. This week: Rob and Richard talk through the pros and cons of taking strike action; Tracey and Fenella share their experiences of loneliness and the ways they've learnt to deal with it; a special 10th anniversary conversation between ten year old boys Jesse and Roan, both born in 2012 when The Listening Project was first broadcast, talking about what they think is going to happen in the next 10 years; and mums Helen and Fabienne share two very different experiences of parenting and home schooling. The Listening Project is a Radio 4 initiative that offers a snapshot of contemporary Britain in which people across the UK volunteer to have a conversation. The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation lasts up to an hour and is then edited to extract the key moments of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in this decade of the millennium. You can learn more about The Listening Project by visiting bbc.co.uk/listeningproject Producer: Mohini Patel

As her mother slips into the fog of dementia, a philosopher grapples with the unbreakable links between our bodies and our sense of self. Vanessa wakes from a coma to find she has lost 10 years of memories and that she has become a person she does not recognise. Toussaint, a Haitian immigrant, is haunted by voices. Thomas no longer knows how to answer questions and a retired teacher loses the use of her right hand because of an inexplicable pain. Noga Arikha began studying these patients and their confounding symptoms in order to explore how our physical experiences inform our identities. Soon after she began her work, the question took on unexpected urgency, as Arikha's own mother began to show signs of Alzheimer's disease. Weaving together stories of her subjects' troubles and her mother's decline, Arikha searches for some meaning in the science she has set out to study. She explores how the self studies itself and how it loses itself, delving into the scientific research that can help us understand how deeply interconnected are our minds and bodies. The result is an unforgettable journey across the ever-shifting boundaries between ourselves and each other.

Narrated by Fenella Woolgar, a masterful novel of necromancy, secrets, and a world on the brink of the modern age... The year is 1785, and Thomas Peach, a gentleman of modest means, moves to a small village in the West Country, bringing with him a steamer chest of clothes, some books - and, apparently, his wife, Mrs Peach, who quickly becomes a source of fascination and suspicion to the villagers. Why is she never seen abroad? Why does Mr Peach refuse entry to her bedroom to their maidservant, who is unable to detect even a whisper of breath at Mrs Peach's door, try as she might? Does Mrs Peach even exist? And if so, is she the victim of her husband's cruelty? A liberal and free thinker, Mr Peach is a member of a society of learned men in Bristol, one of whom is guardian of a young woman believed to be possessed by a demon. Mr Peach disagrees with this opinion, but suspicion only grows when the woman in question - whose mouth and lips are stained inexplicably black - escapes from her patron and causes panic in the countryside. Soon she is living under Mr Peach's protection. But he himself is in danger; someone - or something - has followed him from his former life in London. Thomas Peach has enumerable secrets - and one of them might just prove deadly.
A feminist exploration of the power of walking in nature, following in the footsteps of Gwen John, Georgia O'Keeffe, Frieda Lawrence, Clara Vyvyan, Simone de Beauvoir and Nan Shepherd. The story of extraordinary women who lost their way - their sense of self, their identity, their freedom - and found it again through walking in the wild. A feminist exploration of the power of walking in nature, following in the footsteps of Gwen John, Georgia O'Keeffe, Frieda Lawrence, Clara Vyvyan, Simone de Beauvoir, Daphne Du Maurier and Nan Shepherd. For centuries, the wilds have been male territory, while women sat safely confined at home. But not all women did as they were told, despite the dangers; history is littered with women for whom rural walking became inspiration, consolation and liberation. In this powerful and deeply inspiring book, Annabel Abbs uncovers women who refused to conform, who recognised a biological, emotional and artistic need for wilderness, water and desert - and who took the courageous step of walking unpeopled and often forbidding landscapes. Part wild-walk, part memoir, Windswept follows an exhilarating journey from Abbs' isolated car-less childhood to her walking the remote paths trodden by extraordinary women including Georgia O'Keeffe in the empty plains of Texas and New Mexico, Nan Shepherd in the mountains of Scotland, Gwen John following the Garonne, Simone de Beauvoir in the mountains and forests of France and Daphne du Maurier following the River Rhone. A single question pulses through their walks: how does a woman change once she becomes windswept?
This week, Tony talks to Fenella Hemus, NLP Master Coach and trainer, about the ways in which she uses these techniques and tools to enable people to move past blocks and be the best that they can be. KEY TAKEAWAYS Neuro-linguisitic programming helps people to dismantle the barriers that may be holding them back from achieving greatness. Through careful practice, we can achieve far more with its help. High achievers have a strong desire to be perfect at everything. This can result in greater dismay when failure is experienced. Adverse childhood experiences can negatively impact health later in life. NLP can help to unlock these hidden traumas and aid in recovery. The generation of children we have now are fearful and anxious. They are not born this way, and so it must mean that the levels of anxiety we are feeling is bleeding down to the next generation. BEST MOMENTS 'These things can stop people having a joyful, successful life' 'Change is exciting!'
