In part two of our Spice Girls special, we delve into the cinematic and commercial heights of the Spice Girls' career, starting with the chaotic yet iconic Spice World: The Movie. Despite its campy charm being savaged by critics, the film became a box office hit and a cultural touchstone, embodying the group's playful energy. From its frantic production schedule to its critical reappraisal as a beloved spoof, the film marked a defining moment for the group, proving their ability to thrive even under immense pressure. We also explore the Spice Girls' relentless work ethic during the Spiceworld era. Writing and recording an album while filming a feature movie, they churned out hits like "Stop" and "Spice Up Your Life," topping charts and setting records. Their decision to fire manager Simon Fuller and take control of their careers, while shocking at the time, highlighted their determination to remain true to themselves amidst the chaos of global fame. The episode reflects on the personal sacrifices that came with their meteoric rise. From homesickness to the pressures of constant media scrutiny, the toll of superstardom is revealed through candid accounts from the members themselves. Yet, their resilience shone through, as they continued to break records, perform to sold-out crowds, and connect with fans worldwide. Fast-forwarding to their reunions, we discuss how the Spice Girls' legacy continues to captivate. Whether through electrifying reunion tours, Olympic performances, or their influence on new generations of pop stars, their message of empowerment and individuality endures. Even Victoria Beckham's birthday celebration sparked rumors of yet another reunion, proving that the Spice Girls' magic remains timeless. Finally, we reflect on their lasting cultural impact. From redefining what it meant to be a girl group to spearheading the “girl power” movement, the Spice Girls inspired millions with their boldness, diversity, and unity. Their journey, filled with triumphs and challenges, cements their status as not just pop icons but as a phenomenon that changed the face of music and culture forever. The issue of violence against women and girls is depressingly evergreen (see this week's Bush Telegraph), and one which writer Emma Hickman takes on in her science fiction fairytale podcast, Eliza: A Robot Story. Mick caught up with Emma to chat about why she made a robot the protagonist of the series, what it was like to work in partnership with Manchester Women's Aid and The Pankhurst Trust, and our old friend Poor Samantha, the sex robot*. Journalist Chanté Joseph talks to Jen about fronting the Guardian's Pop Culture with Chanté Joseph podcast, the small-p politics in pop culture and her top stories of 2022. And in Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen's looking forward to the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year awards. In Rated or Dated, we travel back in time to 1997 in a Routemaster Tardis to reminisce Miss Selfridge T-shirts and Michael Barrymore among other things, as Hannah asks herself why in God's name has she made us watch Spice World The Movie. Plus there's bad “jokes” and bad healthcare in the Bush Telegraph. *A heads up: this chat also includes discussion around rape, sexual abuse and coercive control.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast.
THEY DON'T JUST SING - the tagline on the Spice Girls movie debut, Spice World! James and John dedicate an entire episode to the acting skills of Baby, Scary, Ginger, Sporty and Posh. Quickly deciding that Victoria Beckham was the breakout star of the movie with her one-liners and iconic scene stealing acting, Posh Spice should've received and Oscar for this. In amongst the discussions of cameos and dance numbers, James reveals the crime he committed whilst working on Spice World - shocker. By far their longest episode yet because there are too many insanely good moments in the cult classic and they all need to be spoken about - the Spice Bus, the bomb, the dress-up montage, dancing boot camp, THE ALIENS?!?!?!! And all of this while good old Nicola is trying to have a baby. James and John will be forever grateful to Emma Bunton, Melanie C, Geri Halliwell, Mel B and Victoria Beckham for this cinematic masterpiece! Of course, they had to discuss the newly unveiled 'secret' between Geri and Mel B, who cares if they did the dirty? Let them. Their love child would certainly be John though.
In the latest episode of Film Stories with Simon Brew, Simon looks at a much-loved trilogy closer, and a very quickly produced British movie! Back To The Future Part III was caught up in the post-production for Back To The Future Part II a little, and also working to a tight deadline imposed by its creative team. Spice World, too, had to work to a very tight deadline - and turned out to be a film conceived and released within 12 months. But an early Disney idea could have taken things a different way. Stories of both are discussed in this episode... Find Simon on Twitter at @simonbrew, and the podcast can be found at @filmstoriespod. You can find the Film Stories website here.
