In 1996, the Spice Girls took the world by storm, becoming the highest-selling girl group in history, and sharing their message of girl power so loud that it inspired the 4th wave of feminism – or at least we like to think so.  The rise of the Spice Girls came at a time when the 24-hour news cycle had just begun, meaning that the group are seared into the minds of every British citizen and every woman born between 1980 and 1993. The constant media attention was unparalleled, leaving the Spice Girls with no shred of privacy as newspapers slowly evolved into tabloids dissecting and criticizing every aspect of their lives. Join us as we break down the Spice Girls phenomenon – from their feminism Lite that inspired a generation to headlines they could not escape. Enjoy this episode? People of the world! Spice Up Your Life! Because Melanie C is the today's guest on Reign! We celebrate 25 years of the Spice Girls, and I think I have been her number one fan for that long! I can still remember my playground Spice Girls renditions with my other four spices - unfortunately I didn't quite have the vocal range. The Spice Girls not only sold over 100 million records worldwide with they huge hits, but in a world where men still dominated our culture - especially in music - their message of ‘Girl Power' taught an entire generation about feminism and kicked the patriachy in the balls - right where it needed it! Melanie went on to have a hugely successful solo career with bangers like I Turn To You, Never Be the Same Again, and When You're Gone with Bryan Adams, selling 23 million records in the process. 2021 saw Melanie hitting the top ten with her self-titled album, showing that after three decades in the music business she is showing no signs of stopping, thank you very much! After recently appearing on Dancing With The Stars in the USA, Melanie joins me for a chat that has tears, laughter and a whole lot more. We talk about the sexism that Spice Girls dealt with during their career, the allegations surrounding Melanie's sexuality after she cut her hair short when launching her solo career, and just how classy a night out with the Spice Girls was. Plot spoiler it involved a lot of cheap alcohol - that's our kinda gals! Melanie also opens up about the body image issues that have affected her life and how her mental health left her contemplating whether life would be easier if she wasn't around. PLUS get ready to join our campaign because Melanie reveals that Glastonbury would be the ONE event that would get all five of the Spice Girls back together. Get those placards and those wellies and let's make this happen queens! I hope you love this episode as much as I do - it's a real honour to be joined by such an ICON and I really hope you continue to listen and find the power to Reign in your own lives, too. If you love this episode get in touch (follow me across social media @joshsmithhosts), I love hearing from you. We sat down for a fascinating, wide-ranging chat about everything from friendship, motherhood and anxiety to Britney, how she and Dolly made The High Low so successful (including the possibility of another joint project!) and what her working day looks like. Over some insanely delicious lychee martinis from Bottle Bar and Shop, Pandora also spoke about balance, her flute phase, first heartbreak, how she's grown from an anxious child to a contented adult and carving out her own space, plus musical bluffs, The Spice GIrls and why she doesn't do spon con. Reply. Retweet. Like. Mute. Block. Yes, that's right, it's time to talk Twitter. It's the social media platform most people cannot stand but are also addicted to, with Sachin very much in that camp. He loves/hates Twitter and is joined by two cracking guests to discuss this most twisted of online relationships - podcaster Laura Kirk and deputy editor of Arseblog News, Andrew Allen. Laura and Andrew speak with great wit and honesty about how they interact with Twitter and why, like Sachin, they tend to keep it light when it comes to football chat on there. Jokes rather than tactics. Memes rather than metrics. Being Gooners, Laura and Andrew also talk about what it's like to be part of ‘Arsenal Twitter', a group of people who do a great line in gallows humour, which, as they explain, is largely a coping mechanism during this turbulent time for their club. There's also an interesting discussion about the merits of teaching social media-use in schools before the conversation returns to Arsenal, including why Laura and Andrew support the club in the first place. Laura's answer is especially marvellous. The guests also talk about AFTV and Mikel Arteta before going through their all-time Arsenal XIs and providing different but equally interesting answers to the final question. Oh, and there's also a bit about the Spice Girls. So download, listen and love. And after you have, please Rate and Review. It would mean a lot. Cheers!

Surviving what he describes as a tormented childhood riddled with abuse, Alan Cumming turned to acting, before he knew it was acting, as a way to step out of the world he inhabited and into one of his own creation. One that was safe, where he made the rules. That impulse eventually led him to leave home, study drama in Glasgow, and, in his words” tumble” into a career that, from the outside-in, has appeared as an endless stream of successes. He's performed with everyone from Jay Z to Liza Minelli; won countless theatrical awards, made back-to-back films with Stanley Kubrick and the Spice Girls; played God, the Devil, Hitler, the Pope, a teleporting superhero, Hamlet, all the parts in Macbeth, General Batista of Cuba, a goat opposite Sean Connery, and political spinmeister Eli Gold on seven seasons of The Good Wife. He's also owned the stage and invited people to re-examine their beliefs, identity, sexuality and sense of power, propriety and openness in the role of the EmCee in Cabaret, which he took on three times over 22 years in London and on Broadway. He's the author of five books including a #1 New York Times best-selling memoir; and played the first-ever gay leading role on a US network drama, CBS's Instinct. And, Alan was made an Officer of the British Empire for his contributions to the arts and LBGT equality by the Queen, and has had a love affair with New York City for nearly three decades, where he lives with his husband, and just for fun, also owns a bar. What sounds like a near-magical life on stages, television and the big screen, though, has also seen its share of profound pain, loss, grief, existential struggle, and eventually a series of reckonings, and awakenings to who and what matters, and a certain reclamation of joy and life. Now in his 50s, he reflects on these moments along this journey in his new book, Baggage: Tales from a Fully Packed Life, and we dive into all of it, along with his take on current culture, in today's conversation. Have you ever seen those videos online where someone hears a song, and they're instantly transported back to a moment? It could be someone with Alzheimers or Dementia, or with a brain injury or trauma that language can't reach, but music can. Maybe you've known someone with autism, who is non verbal but can communicate with song.   It's called music therapy, and the science behind it, is incredible. Usually the Take 5 is with a muso, or person in the public eye. But I wanted to step into another realm, and get inside the brain of a registered music therapist. Chanelle Henderson is just that. She works with a really broad array of people too, from elderly clients to little kids and preterm babies and their parents. And across five songs, she invites you into this world and tells you the stories of some incredible breakthroughs. From three chord simplicity, to bonding with babies, and the music that takes us back instantly as a sensory memory, this is a beautiful conversation about the scientific and emotional power of song.   You Are My Sunshine - Johnny Cash Stop - Spice Girls Raining on the Rock - Warren H Williams Song for Sammy - Missy Higgins Sitting On The Dock of the Bay – Otis Redding

Borderline Idealist – BPD & Introvert Life

A song to help you use the STOP skill to the tune of "Stop," by Spice Girls! Music, video, acting, directed and produced by Aj! More song on the way! Lyrics: PERSON: I've heard you talk about the stop skill but I can never use it AJ: why? PERSON: I just can't remember to use it! AJ: well I have a fun way that can help you to remember it! PERSON: really? Okay! AJ: it's a song that came up with. PERSON: okay! AJ: and I'm going to have to sing right now so... PERSON: .. Oh no thank you AJ: Too late! Let's say: Someone just walked in, They make you frown, For some reason you don't think they like you. It's how your friends are charmed away, Distracted from what you were saying. Trying to stay grounded but those strong feelings, Makes you want to show them how bad your feeling, Youre Lost in a daze, The stranger steps your way, With a smile, asking how you're doing? You're angry from being pushed aside, You want to run out of the room and cry, That feeling so intense, Recognize when you're about to lose it. PERSON: Okay, so that's when I... STOP right now! Take a step back, Observe your surroundings, what your feeling, Find the facts? Proceed now mindfully. Don't go overreactioning, So you won't regret a thing. La la la la Remember feelings don't last forever La la la la If you use stop things will turn out better. You feel angry like you've been deserted, But acting out right now just isn't worth it, You're right to feel the emotions you do, But resist the thrill of getting even! Acting on them Consider being wise beyond your years, Recall the times you went apeshit on peers, Never makes you look too good, When you're telling everyone you didn't get what you deserve! STOP right now! Take a step back, Observe your surroundings, what your feeling, What are the fact? Proceed now mindfully. Don't go overreactioning, So you won't regret a thing. When you feel, Eyebrows arching, Temperature rising, Hands clenched, Arms stiff, You know it's time to stop that ship!
