What happens when a curious flight instructor candidate decides to “call TOPGUN?”  In this episode of More to the Story, host Beth Stanton, NAFI's director of publications and editor, talks with Mentor author Xavier Piar about the story behind his two-part article series: “So I Called TOPGUN,” which appeared in the March/April issue, and “So I Called TOPGUN Back,” which appeared in the May/June issue.  What started as a few emails to The Fighter Pilot Podcast led Piar to conversations with four former TOPGUN aviators: Vincent “Jell-O” Aiello, Craig “Crunch” Snyder, Greg “Hoser” Hansen, and Dave “Bio” Baranek. Together, Stanton and Piar explore: What civilian CFIs can learn from TOPGUN instructional philosophy Why debriefing may be one of the most overlooked tools in flight training The humility and honesty shared by elite military aviators How curiosity turned into two Mentor magazine articles and enhanced digital content From CFII struggles to Tomcat stories, this episode is packed with insight for instructors, students, and aviation enthusiasts alike. Also, SpaceX Starlink for GA pilots, a Southwest flight experience, and a conversation with the NTSB. Aviation News FAA's MOSAIC Rule To Help General Aviation Contributes To Sonex Failure The FAA's MOSAIC rule (Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification) expands what can be certificated as light-sport aircraft using consensus standards. It broadens sport pilot privileges to give access to more aircraft types. The general aviation industry expected MOSAIC to create new opportunities for pilots and aircraft manufacturers. But unintended consequences may have arisen from removing limitations on light sport aircraft and making heavier aircraft available as entry-level airplanes. A drop in demand has contributed to Sonex Aircraft’s closure. Video: Sonex is Closing: A Message from Mark Schaible https://youtu.be/wl9H0N_r8kE?si=P_sAI7Wl_2vOJKo0 US airlines face fuel-driven financial shakeout Global oil prices are up. Brent crude is roughly 50% higher than a year ago. Jet fuel is up around 90% compared to a year ago. Since fuel typically accounts for 20% or more of an airline's total costs, we can expect higher fares, fuel surcharges, and capacity cuts. Profits could take a hit if airlines can't pass higher costs on to consumers fast enough. JetBlue Explores Selling Itself — Advisors Are Looking At United, Southwest And Alaska As Buyers JetBlue is reportedly evaluating selling itself to a competitor, such as United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, or Southwest Airlines. Any such deal could raise antitrust issues, and there is pressure to reach one soon, before the current political climate changes. Presque Isle council recommends JetBlue to keep serving airport After talking with JetBlue and American Airlines at a joint meeting with the airport advisory board, the Presque Isle City Council voted 5-2 to recommend JetBlue to continue serving the city's airport for the next four years. The Council's recommendation next goes to the U.S. Department of Transportation for a final decision on the Essential Air Service award, which may take several months. See the DOT Essential Air Service page. University of Maine at Augusta may start training air traffic controllers The FAA's Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI) is a non-funded partnership between the FAA and approved institutions. The Enhanced AT-CTI Initiative was created to allow qualified institutions to provide students with equivalent FAA Academy air traffic control training. Program graduates are placed directly into a facility, with FAA oversight. They can immediately begin localized training at an air traffic facility. These graduates still must pass the Air Traffic Skills Assessment (ATSA) and meet medical and security requirements. United Relax Row: 777 & 787 Economy Seats That Transform Into A “Couch” United Airlines is introducing the Relax Row in economy on long-haul flights. McDonald.'NOLA: An Interactive Street Performing Experience.'     Before embarking on my street performing tour of the U.S., one aspect I said I would investigate on the road was how influencial setting is for creating music.     Admittedly, this question was buried under piles of other questions that surfaced during my earlier stops, D.C., Nashville, Asheville and Atlanta. But that changed once I arrived in New Orleans.     Music and culture ' especially along Royal Street ' ooze from NOLA's pores, pumping through its streets as if the heart of all music can be found somewhere within the veins of the French Quarter. It is New Orleans, after all, that mothered music greats ranging from Louis Armstrong and Fats Domino to Lil Wayne. And that variety is not accidental ' it's part of NOLA's appeal.     On one street you may walk into an impromptu jazz ensemble performance, complete with an upright bass, saxophone player and a singer throwing out some hot scats. Five blocks down, you could stumble upon a high-energy brass group filled with trumpets, trombones and a tuba. Not to mention the multiple solo acts scattered throughout NOLA's streets at all hours of the day and night.     One factor that makes NOLA an ideal street performing city is the layout. The Quarter's tight streets, filled with sheltered sidewalks due to the vast amounts of layered decks, create a rich acoustic experience for buskers. The sound stays contained from having a ceiling of sorts, which then bounces off the parallel building in full circle. This week in Louisiana history. March 13, 1815. Gen. Andrew Jackson declares the end of martial law in New Orleans at the end of War of 1812. This week in New Orleans history. The City Park property was famous as a dueling ground long before it was a park ' more Affaires d'honneur were fought in New Orleans than in any other American city. They resulted from serious affronts, petty insults, or deliberate confrontations for the sole purpose of displaying fencing skills. Weapons of choice included swords, sabers, pistols, rifles, even bare hands. During the 1800s a series of duels were fought between fencing masters ' the most famous, Spaniard Pepe Llula was known as a duelist who met any man with any weapon. Times-Democrat on March 13, 1892, reported, "Between 1834 and 1844 scarcely a day passed without duels being fought at the Oaks'. Dueling had been outlawed two years before under the death penalty (if a death resulted) but it was seldom enforced.  This week in Louisiana. 667. Part 2 of our conversation with Kathleen Kass Byrd about her book on the history of Natchitoches. "Kathleen M. Byrd's Natchitoches, Louisiana, 1803–1840 is an examination of one French Creole community as it transitioned from a fur-trading and agricultural settlement under the control of Spain to a critical American outpost on the Spanish/American frontier and finally to a commercial hub and jumping-off point for those heading west. Byrd focuses on historic events in the area and the long-term French Creole residents as they adapted to the American presence. She also examines the effect of the arrival of the Americans, with their Indian trading house and Indian agency, on Native groups and considers how members of the enslaved population took advantage of opportunities for escape presented by a new international border. Byrd shows how the arrival of Americans forever changed Natchitoches, transforming it from a sleepy frontier settlement into a regional commercial center and staging point for pioneers heading into Texas" (LSU Pr.). Kathleen M. Byrd (nicknamed Kass) is a distinguished anthropologist, archaeologist, and historian specializing in the history and prehistory of Louisiana, particularly the Natchitoches region. A native of Connecticut, she earned her B.A. from Marquette University, an M.A. from LSU (focusing on coastal subsistence patterns), and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida. She served as Louisiana's state archaeologist for 15 years before joining Northwestern State University (NSU) in Natchitoches in 1994, where she later became director of the School of Social Sciences for 12 years until her retirement.  Now available: Liberty in Louisiana: A Comedy. There was not and never would be a situation with which he could not cope or a foe from whom he would run in panic. His self-confidence was almost as vast as his curiosity. He would stand alone, or with kindred spirits. Never would he place himself at the mercy of, or pay homage to, one who was not kindred.     He liked the woman. She was unfailingly kind and gentle. "The Expedition of Hernando de Soto" was written by his companion Luis Hernandez de Biedma. "When we arrived, the queen sent us one of her nieces, in a litter carried by Indians. She sent the governor a present of a necklace of beads, canoes to cross the river with, and gave us half the village to lodge in. The governor opened a large temple built in the woods, in which was buried the chiefs of the country, and took from it a quantity of pearls, amounting to six or seven arrobes, which were spoiled by being buried in the ground. We dug up two Spanish axes, a chaplet of wild olive seed, and some small beads, resembling those we had brought from Spain for the purpose of trading with the Indians. We conjectured they had obtained these things by trading with the companions of Vasquez de Ayllon. The Indians told us the sea was only about thirty leagues distant." This week in Louisiana history. Max talks with Bret Koebbe, Vice President of Sporty's Pilot Shop, about how Starlink internet access is entering general aviation cockpits and what that means for pilots today and in the future. For decades, cockpit connectivity was mostly reserved for the airlines. Systems like Gogo provided limited bandwidth, required expensive antennas, and were impractical for piston aircraft. GA pilots relied on ADS-B weather, portable receivers, or Iridium text messaging to stay connected. That landscape has shifted with the Starlink Mini, a portable satellite dish small enough to fit in a 182 or Cirrus, delivering broadband internet in flight.   Benefits for Pilots Bret outlines the legitimate safety advantages. Pilots can text family or FBOs, update arrival times, and share real-time position updates. More importantly, Starlink could enable widespread filing of PIREPs directly from an iPad, improving weather data for all. Weather cameras, now integrated into ForeFlight, could become accessible in flight, offering pilots actual visual conditions instead of relying solely on METARs or AWOS reports. Risks and Distractions But Starlink also poses serious distraction risks. Bret shares a personal story: during a family trip, he streamed an NFL game mid-flight, only to realize within seconds how dangerously it diverted his attention. He immediately shut it off, but the experience was a powerful reminder of how alluring the technology is. Max underscores that the NTSB lists distractions as a top factor in loss-of-control accidents, and Starlink could easily become an “attractive nuisance” in cockpits. Cost and Service Plans Starlink Mini hardware is about $499, and the Local Priority plan runs $65/month for 50 GB, sufficient for most piston pilots. For corporate pilots and jets, the Global Priority plan at $250/month supports higher speeds and offshore operations. Bret explains the differences in speed limitations (350 mph for Local Priority vs 550 mph for Global Priority) and how to choose based on aircraft type and mission. Mounting and Power Solutions Because Starlink Mini lacks an internal battery, powering it is key. Bret recommends Sporty's Flight Gear Max Battery, capable of outputting 140 watts via USB-C, giving about three hours of Starlink runtime. For longer flights, higher-capacity solutions exist. Mounting options include suction cup mounts for rear windows (ideal in high-wing Cessnas and Cirrus aircraft) or side-window solutions in low-wing and corporate jets. Positioning is critical—blocking the dish with wings can cause dropouts. Practical Tips Bret offers pilot-tested tips: Create a custom iPad Focus Mode that blocks notifications except for critical texts when ForeFlight is open. Establish SOPs—use Starlink only in cruise and disconnect before descent. Enable Low Data Mode on devices to prevent iCloud or app background syncing from eating up gigabytes. Don't rely on Starlink radar or traffic feeds, which have even more latency than ADS-B. The Future of Connected Cockpits Looking ahead, Bret sees huge potential. Automatic turbulence reporting from onboard sensors could update in real time if aircraft have internet connections. Engine monitor data could be streamed to ground support for diagnostics, offering pilots in-flight decision support. Eventually, Starlink-enabled cockpits could complement FAA datalink systems like CPDLC, streamlining communication and safety services. Final Thoughts This milestone Episode 400 illustrates how cockpit technology continues to evolve rapidly. Affordable internet access brings new possibilities for safety, convenience, and passenger comfort, but it also requires disciplined use to prevent dangerous distractions. As Bret and Max agree, the future of aviation will be defined by how responsibly pilots integrate these new tools. Whether you fly a piston single, a turboprop, or a corporate jet, Starlink is likely to shape your cockpit experience in the coming years. This episode gives pilots the knowledge to make informed decisions as they consider adopting Starlink for their aircraft.
