We've arrived for a big one! We're going back to the 90s when the Spice Girls formed to recount their journey. This is part one of a two part special. The Spice Girls' journey began on March 4, 1994, when 400 hopefuls answered an ad to form a girl group. Over time, the group's lineup evolved, culminating in the iconic quintet: Mel B, Mel C, Victoria, Geri, and Emma. Early rehearsals, demos, and auditions set the stage for their rise, though challenges like lineup changes and disagreements with management revealed their determination to chart their own path. As they found their footing, the Spice Girls staged a daring escape from management control, reclaiming their music and signing with Simon Fuller. His strategic moves, including their electrifying showcase at Virgin Records, propelled them into the public eye. Industry insiders couldn't resist the charisma and energy of these five women, leading to a competitive bidding war that secured their record deal and launched their debut single, Wannabe. The making of Wannabe reflected the Spice Girls' quirky creativity and tenacity, with their patchwork approach to songwriting and their insistence on perfection during production. Despite initial doubts, the track became a global sensation, marking the start of “Spicemania.” By the end of 1996, the group's infectious energy, chart-topping hits, and bold personalities had captured the hearts of fans and critics alike. Integral to their success was the concept of “girl power,” a rallying cry for individuality, empowerment, and camaraderie. The term, championed by Geri Halliwell, struck a chord with audiences worldwide, offering a spirited counterpoint to the male-dominated pop culture of the time. This ethos cemented the Spice Girls as more than a band—they became a cultural phenomenon. As the decade closed, the Spice Girls had achieved unprecedented global success. From record-breaking album sales to unforgettable moments like Geri's Union Jack dress at the Brit Awards, they dominated the music and fashion landscapes. With Spiceworld: The Movie on the horizon, the Spice Girls' meteoric rise was far from over—proving they weren't just a pop group but a pop culture revolution. Video version: https://youtu.be/fJWJgieaZN4 From hosting parties as kids on two home hifis in a small west country town to playing some of the biggest clubs and festivals in the world, schooldays best friends Nick Halkes and Andy Smith have enjoyed amazing careers both individually and together. Here they talk about remixing , touring and so much more as they prepare for the release of the third instalment of the Reach Up Disco Wonderland compilation series on BBE that Andy compiles. As schooldays best friends Andy and Nick ran a mobile disco together and hunted for bargain 12 inch vinyl in their childhood home town of Portishead near Bristol. At this point they had no idea that Andy would supply beats and tour the world with Portishead before one of the top 100 djs in the world nor that Nick would go on to set up the XL and Positiva labels becoming one of the UK mst respected dance and electronic music industry executives. Reach Up launched more than five years ago at London basement venue The Waiting Rooms and soon after appeared at Carl Cox's night at Space, Ibiza where they played for three seasons on the bounce and then also began packing out their monthly London residency at Peckham's South London Soul Train (hosted at the legendary Bussey Building). Following the 2017 release of the Reach Up Disco Wonderland compilation on the renowned BBE Records, Volume 2 was released in 2019. Andy and Nick's re-edits of two tracks on the 2017 Reach Up Disco Wonderland comp were just the start. Nick's collaboration with Full Intention, both to release original music on Midnight Riot and remix State of the Nation feat the Jungle Brothers, gained support from Purple Disco Machine, Dimitri from Paris and Roger Sanchez. From there a chart topping Nick Reach Up remix of Hideaway by De'lacey followed and a Nick Reach Up collab with Birdee and vocal legend Barbara Tucker that scored coveted daytime Radio One play in the UK whilst hitting top 3 on Traxsource. An invitation to remix Mel C took the Nick Reach Up sound into new territory whilst a rework of Body Work by Hot Streak also took off. Most recently Nick was approached to remix the Kylie single Magic taken from her album appropriately entitled ‘Disco' and in October 2020 had 4 remixes of his simultaneously in the Music Week Upfront Top 20. In the time that all this was happening amongst other achievements Andys re-edit of Will Sessions & Amp Fiddler feat. Dames Brown – Lost Without You notched up a tune of the month accolade in Mixmag. Despite having much to look back on Reach Up's monthly radio show on the award-winning Soho Radio features regular guest mixes from the likes of Full Intention, Jumpin' Jack Frost, Young Pulse, Danny Rampling and more showcasing the hottest new music along with classic and more hidden gems from back in the day. Despite knowing each other for decades maybe this is still just the start for Nick and Andys Reach Up Disco Wonderland adventure?!

At the height of the ‘Cool Britannia' craze, the Spice Girls released their first movie, ‘Spice World', with a glittering premiere at the Empire Leicester Square, on 15th December, 1997. Geri, Emma, Victoria, Mel B, and Mel C donned pinstripe suits with boosted cleavage; attendees included the Prince of Wales; and their on-screen co-stars included Meat Loaf, Richard E Grant, Roger Moore, and Elton John. The film, made for a budget of just $5m and with a production schedule of just one year, had been written by Kim Fuller, who drew inspiration from The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night", infusing the sketches that formed the screenplay with self-knowing British humour. In this episode, Arion (WHO WAS AT THE AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE, WHAT?!), Rebecca and Olly consider whether a movie like ‘Spice World' could still be made today; explain how the internet came to the rescue when it came to filming at the Albert Hall; and marvel at the eccentric characterisation of its five key protagonists… Further Reading: • ‘‘We ran out of parts for people': How Spice World became the ‘must be in' movie of the Nineties' (The Independent, 2022): https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/features/spice-girls-spice-world-movie-songs-b2251622.html • 'Inside the Absolutely Impossible, Iconic ‘Spice World' Bus, 25 Years Later' (Vanity Fair, 2023): https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2023/01/inside-spice-world-bus-25-years-later • ‘Spice World: The Movie (U.S. Trailer)' (Columbia Pictures, 1997): (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmSBtOHzGPM #90s #Film #Music #UK We'll be back on Monday - unless you join

In this episode we will tell the story of a long haired hippy with a dream to do something spectacular. With the help of his talented friends and against the powers of the land he made that dream into a reality. Then thousands of years later 2 middle class British toffs turned that story into a multi hundred million dollar enterprise with a Hollywood film, a lavish stage show and the epitome of 70s culture the concept double album. How did a 24 year old Tim Rice, an assistant producer in the record industry and 21 year old composer Andrew Lloyd Webber end up with a hit single, hit album, hit stage show and hit movie? And how was this potentially blasphemous production received by the Chri$tian world? This episode features special guest star appearances from Olympic Studios, London, The Rolling Stones, Sympathy for the Devil, MCA, The Likes of Us, Joseph and the Amazing Technocolour Dreamcoat, Bob Dylan, With God on Our Side, Judas Iscariot, Roman Empire, Rome, Romans, Roman Emperor, Billy Graham, Samuel L. Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...There are only 2 rules to this podcast. The book has to be found in a thrift shop and we are not allowed to talk about the book until we press record, which is sometimes agonising. We have lots of episodes coming up so if you find yourself enjoying our podcast, please be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear about each episode.THANK YOU FOR LISTENING

Melanie C, aka Sporty Spice, is best known for being in one of the most successful girl groups of all time. But this week she's swapping the pop world for the dance world and performing a new contemporary piece by the choreographer Jules Cunningham at Sadler's Wells. Melanie C and Jules Cunningham discuss their collaboration, How Did We Get Here? Rasha Nahas is a Palestinian singer-songwriter who was born in Haifa and now lives in Berlin. She tells Samira about her new album, Amrat, which is her first album in Arabic, and which explores nostalgia, sense of place, and the importance of authentic instrumental music. Film-maker Laura Poitras talks about her new documentary, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, which has been nominated for this year's Academy Awards. Following the photographer Nan Goldin's campaign against Purdue Pharma, owned by the Sackler family, for their part in the opioid crisis, the film paints an intimate portrait of Goldin's life, work and activism. Melanie Chisholm (AKA “Sporty Spice” of the Spice Girls, solo artist, author of The Sporty One memoir) joins us to discuss the Spice Girls' impact on music and culture, battling difficult personal struggles in the extreme public eye, and the toll playing a caricature of yourself can take. She reveals the origins of the band and their “Girl Power” message, the similarities between each band member and their onstage personas, and why she finally decided to reflect on her experiences in her new memoir. Mel C opens up about the onset of her disordered eating, why she finally decided to seek help, and the toxicity of the tabloid media when Spice Girls rose to fame compared to today's social media. Mayim and Melanie consider denial as a coping mechanism, the loneliness that comes with disordered eating, and the impact of the loss of Queen Elizabeth II.Melanie Chisholm's memoir, "The Sporty One: My Life as a Spice Girl": https://www.grandcentralpublishing.com/titles/melanie-chisholm/the-sporty-one/9781538740316/BialikBreakdown.comYouTube.com/mayimbialik

Woah, Friday already? You know what that means… It's time for The Chris Moyles Show Podcast on Radio X and my goodness, it's a corker! The studio saw more celebs than The Oscars this week as we were joined by James Cameron, Mel C, Clinton Baptiste and Les Dennis. Dom's illegal activities finally caught up with him as he spilled all the gossip on his time at his speed awareness course. Chris hasn't been feeling too well this week, and decided to cheer himself up by telling us all the gruesome details of his antics on the bog. We also celebrated James' birthday this week, and the team decided to treat him to some wonderful presents that came in the form of voice notes from some very special people. And if that wasn't enough, here's more… - James' Weekend Roundup - Harry interrupts an Australian TV shoot - Chris' Ring of Fire Enjoy! The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X Weekdays 6:30-10am
Mel C is a singer and ‘Sporty Spice' from the Spice Girls, through her solo career and her time with the Spice Girls she's sold over 100 million records, making her one of the best selling musical artists of all time. Every single one of those records was against the odds of coming from a council estate near Liverpool, derogatory labels in the press calling her ‘Sumo Spice', and music industry management that didn't believe in her and sought to objectify her. But she persevered and helped to build the biggest girlband of all time, as well as one of the most successful solo careers of any group member ever. The world is so glad she did because, as this conversation shows, she has so much to contribute when she's let free to do things her way. Topics: Early years Dancing Not being taken care of a a child Discovering singing & joining the spice girls receiving horrible comments The come up of the spice girls The pressure being in a girlband Turning into a robot Depression Life after the spice girls Coming back together as the spice girls Wheres your line in sharing stuff The impact of your parents relationship on you The last guests question Mel: https://www.twitter.com/melaniecmusic https://www.instagram.com/melaniecmusic/ Mels book: https://amzn.to/3R1ikGl Watch the episodes on Youtube: https://g2ul0.app.link/3kxINCANKsb Follow us on Telegram: https://g2ul0.app.link/E5re0ADNKsb Sponsors: Huel - https://g2ul0.app.link/wjmvak5nAsb Craftd - https://g2ul0.app.link/gZ8in6Dsvsb
TW: eating disorders; suicide; sexual assaultI am so honoured to welcome my first ever Spice Girl to How To Fail! Today Melanie Chisholm - the artist formerly known as Mel C or even Sporty Spice - joins me in what is arguably her most open interview yet. She tells me about the impact of her parents' divorce, the extreme lengths of her people-pleasing as one of the most famous stars of the 1990s and her own struggles with her body. She talks bravely about the toxic impact of media attention on her weight, and how she developed an eating disorder. This led her into a very dark mental space where she felt dishonest about the image she was portraying to the outside world. Melanie also opens up about a sexual assault she endured while on tour in Turkey and her thoughts of suicide at her lowest points. And yet the extraordinary thing about Melanie is her resilience and her enduring gentleness. She is SO lovely, and we also have laugh-out-loud moments, including an unforgettable karaoke anecdote involving her and Baby Spice surprising some unsuspecting punters...What. A. Woman.--Who I Am by Melanie Chisholm is published on 15th September and is available to order here: https://www.waterstones.com/book/who-i-am/melanie-chisholm/9781802793598--How To Fail With Elizabeth Day is hosted and produced by Elizabeth Day. The first international all-star season kicks off with your standard issue talent show, and to be honest, a few standard issue performances from an otherwise delightful pack of familiar faces. Jimbo launched into the lead with lunch meat, Pangina emptied the tank and set the stage on fire, Blu proved to be a triple threat, Baga Chipz was mostly crumbs, Janey took off her clothes, Cheryl served pizza, the Americans sang, and Lemon jumped from a Canuck fan favorite to bottom of the pack. We're thrilled that Mel C said she'd be there, we welcome more phone acting from Ru, take a peek at Juju's journal and briefly take sides on the Wordle craze.
