So much happening on the spinning front for me this month, that I needed two podcasts to talk about it all. So this is the first one, and Episode 165 will continue with more spinning goodness. As promised, some links to people mentioned in the podcast: A lovely squishy package arrived at my house one day full of Baby Doll South down fiber. It was processed and mixed with lovely mohair and a tiny bit of nylon. The ewe's name is Lily and was white. The ram's name is Ray, and is a lovely silver gray. This fiber is from Teresa at SpinHistory.com Wooly Knob Fiber Mill, is only on FaceBook, search for them there. Fall Apart Farm, McArthur, Ohio has purebreed registered Icelandic sheep. They also can be found on Face Dream Weaver Fiber Arts where I met Kathy at the Wool Gathering and bought a lovely turkish spindle. Alpaca Pines Fiber and Mill is the source of the beautiful alpaca I spun during Spin Together. They are in Illinois. The Spin Together Group on Facebook is now a good choice for replacing Spinzilla, spinning during the first week of Oct. Check it out for next year's spinning.
I was able to do so much during this Tour de Fleece, it took two podcasts to tell you all about it. See the previous podcast for part one of this two part series. The first fiber I talk about spinning is called Fake Cashmere, due to it softness. It is however, 100% nylon. I bought my fiber from a dyer whose business is Jazz Turtle. It seems most people like to spin this fiber blended with other fibers, but I enjoyed spinning it on it's own. Another source for the fiber is Paradise Fibers The next fiber I worked with was a dyed merino silk batt in the colors purple and green. Listen as I explain how I made color sequencing work for the 2 ply yarn. On the TdF challenge day, I got out the book charka, not something I have much skill with. I was able to set it up and spin some single on it for my challenge. I spent many days during the Tdf dyeing fiber, both in locks and in big pots full of fiber. I had the amazing once in a life time experience of dyeing a color I will never be able to repeat, calico locks. This podcast tells you how that happened. Finally for the state fair entries, I needed an art yarn and chose to spin locks into a yarn. It was a learning experience and I share all I learned to make this yarn. At the beginning of the podcast I talk about how there will be no Spinzilla this year, but TNNA has provided these two links for spinning fund raisers: Britspin also Spin Her Free and The owner of Purple Lamb Fibers is doing a Spin Together Oct 6 through Oct 12, 2019 Lots and lots of information in this podcast, grab a big chunk of fiber, your spinning tool of choice, and join me.
I had a wonderful week, focused on spinning as much yardage as I could. I talk about all those yards in this podcast, plus a few thoughts on spinning on the electric Roberta and also what to do about fiber with high vegetable matter in it. Looking for a way to keep track of your spinning projects? I have created the Spinners' Journal to help you with that. It was done at Lulu.com, and is a reasonable 12.50 plus shipping. Your purchases help me pay the cost of keeping yarnspinnerstales podcasts archived. Thank-you! I spun up 4,040 Spinzilla yards including plying! The fiber I spun was:Sweet Georgia Superwash Targhee, Sept 2015 Club colorway, Open HandsSweet Georgia Superwash Merino, Phoenix RisingOther fibers on my spinning list (that I didn't get to) included:Sweet Georgia Silk Puff in the Spinzilla 2017 colorway, Firestarter. Watch for this spin coming up in the next few months.I just started a sweater spin from some World of Wool Oatmeal BFL that has been in my stash since about 2015. I mentioned Susan B. Anderson's Smooth Operator Socks as well as Kirbywirby's YouTube video on afterthought heels. Both of these were suggestions I got when I asked about favorite afterthought heel socks on Instagram.I'm nearing the heels on my Biscotte Yarns Bis-Sock in Pansies. The sweaters I show are both by Josee Paquin, the purple is Miranda and the red is Tolmie. My fall scent obsession is the "Hello Fall' and "Let's Stay Home" candles from Bath and Body Works.
We're back on schedule with this week's episode, in which we talk about Allison's trip to Shetland for part of Shetland Wool Week and dig into the patterns in two gorgeous books: Wool Journey: Shetland by Amber Corcoran, Jaime Jennings, Malia Mae Joseph and Stephen West, and Shetland by Marie Wallin. Sponsor This episode of the podcast is sponsored by Garthenor, providing a variety of sustainable, organic British wool products in an ecologically responsible way. See Garthenor’s glorious yarns, including a kit for Isabell Kraemer's new Amory sweater, on their website at http://www.garthenor.com. Make Happy – aka – What we’re working on Rachel is still plugging away on her yellow Erika Knight jumper in British Blue 100. The change in weather means her wool mojo has returned with a vengeance, so she's also been spinning and had a bit of a slip last weekend, and is now the proud owner of a 10" Cricket loom which is destined for generating lots of handspun handwoven scarves. Allison has finished spinning her Turning on Shetland from Porpoise Fur, and mostly finished her Martinique Beach Cowl! Still working on Lemon Difficult by Kate Atherley, but mostly has been spinning like a demon for Spinzilla. Shetland Alli talks about her trip and all the fabulous places she visited, including Uradale Farm. Then we discuss the five patterns in Wool Journey: Shetland, by Amber Corcoran and Jaime Jennings, owners of Fancy Tiger Crafts in Denver (Rachel visited the shop several summers ago) and Malia Mae Joseph and Stephen West, co-owners of Stephen & Penelope in Amsterdam. See all the patterns on Ravelry here. Last but not least we talk about the glorious stranded colourwork designs in Marie Wallin's new book Shetland (see all the patterns on Ravelry here). Lushly photographed and full of glorious colourwork designs, this book is definitely worth a look for anyone with a hankering for a challenge! Other books about Shetland you might want to explore: Shetland Wool Week Annual 2017 Shetland Oo by Kate Davies and Tom Barr Colours of Shetland, Inspired by Islay, or anything else by Kate Davies Wrap up Many thanks for joining us for another episode! This podcast closes the 2016 year, with details on my Spinzilla 2016 spinning. Since one of the fibers I spun during that was dyed with natural dyes and the mordants tin and alum, I did a bit of research on those mordants. I end this podcast with that discussion. These are links to some of the things mentioned in the podcast. The original dye day for the columbia roving was Episode 52. The Jacob roving I spun was from the Ross Family Farm in Pa. One good blog post I referenced in the natural dye mordant discussion was written by Alpenglow yarns. A second post I read and referenced is by Cheryl Kolander of Aurora Silk.

What to spin? Rachel was too busy getting ready for Yarndale (and recovering from Yarndale) to get much knitting done but did manage to finish her sweater design in The Fibre Co.'s new Arranmore yarn which will be an exclusive pattern for A Yarn Story. The Spinzilla report is actually the second part of the podcast. In the first part, I continue the review of using the Ashford quill spindle, using mohair, angora, hemp, bamboo and cotton. A few links for things mentioned in the podcast: Needle Junkies podcast has a link on their website Spinzilla total yards this years was 5,246,497. See more details here. Get your free pattern and yarn recommendations and help knit for Knitted Knockers at this website. Fibers spun on the quill were from the following: WC Mercantile Sweet Pea Fibers Mohair and More
In which Rachel gets perhaps a bit overexcited about sock math, and we pat ourselves on the backs for Spinzilla. News and Events: 18th October - What Knitting Does to Your Brain with Heather Ordover, and The Whirled Cinema in Brixton. Tickets are still available. 23-25th October: Gwlana retreat in West Wales. 29th October - 1st November: Geeky Puffin Knit Palooza, in Edinburgh. 10th/17th November - Anna Maltz, aka Sweaterspotter, is teaching a lace and colourwork class for her popular Solja sweater at Wild & Woolly. 15th November - Clare Devine, of Yarn and Pointy Sticks, is teaching "2 at a time anything" at Knit with Attitude. 15th/22nd November - Brioche Stitch Basics with Renée Callahan at Loop. 28th November - the Bath Christmas Craft Crawl! What we're working on: Rachel weaves in the ends on her Aranami Shawl as we record, and admits that she has picked up a year-old UFO. She also has been trying to quickly finish a baby Lush by Tin Can Knits for her brand spanking new baby niece, who arrived on 8th October. Allison is working on the Modish Cowl by Stephen West, and has finished a Marian Cowl by Jane Richmond in some glorious Malabrigo Rasta. Sadly, the Quaking Aspen shawl is currently in a corner contemplating it's sins while it waits in Time Out. We are both feeling flush with our first ever Spinzilla now behind us - go Team SweetGeorgia! Feeling Bookish: We review two books - first up is the Drift Collection, curated by Eden Cottage Yarns, and featuring their Whitefell DK 100% alpaca yarn. Swoon. Full of cozy accessories and gorgeous, wearable sweaters, this collection is a keeper. Head over to the Eden Cottage Yarns Ravelry group to join the KAL/CAL that starts on the 20th of October. We also review Kate Atherley's new book from Interweave, "Custom Socks: Knit to Fit Your Feet", and Rachel reveals perhaps a bit too much of her geeky, spreadsheet-obsessed side. Chock full of incredibly helpful tips for getting your socks to fit perfectly, we like this one so much that we are going to share the love with you: leave a comment on this post about either your worst sock fitting disaster, or which pattern you'd like to knit from the 14 included in the book, and we will send you your very own copy! Entries close at 11:59 pm on Friday, 30th October, and please be sure you leave contact info so we can get your book to you! In the spirit of Spinzilla, we chat with Rachel Smith, a local Vancouver spinner and knitter who has been blogging about her knitting and spinning since 2009 at welfordpurls.com. Listen to Felicia and Rachel nerd out on spinning today!
It's official. We've fallen off the cold sheep wagon in this episode of the Yarn in the City podcast and we tell you all about in addition to our regular segments - and a new feature! News and Events: Allison recaps her visit to the third annual Yarndale, where she breathed a lot of yarn fumes. The following events are also happening now, just wrapped up or are happening this month: Shetland Wool Week Swiss Wulle Festival UK Wool Week - where we'll be at the Twin Spin event at Royal Festival Hall on Tuesday, 6th October and also doing a spinning demonstration on Savile Row on Friday the 9th. Come say hello! Details on the sheep slippers that Allison mentions in Erika Knight yarn can be found here. The Knitting & Stitching Show - we're going on Wednesday, opening day! Our What Knitting Does to Your Brain event with Heather Ordover - coming up soon on 18th October. Tickets are still available. Gwlana retreat in West Wales - and we're thrilled to help Brenda and Caerthan announce the details of Gwlana for spring 2016! You're going to want to save the date now... (May 20-22 2016) And speaking of saving the date, we're going back to Bath for our own Bath Christmas Craft Crawl, and we'll be doing that on Saturday, 28th November. More details to come soon! What we're working on: Rachel has finished her 8-piece collection for The Fibre Co. out of their chunky Tundra yarn, as well as the bouclé cardigan that she's threatening to gift to Allison. She's close to wrapping up the Aranami Shawl by Olga Jazzy and is designing a new shawl out of the Sincere Sheep Cormo Fingering that she bought at Fancy Tiger Crafts in Denver this past summer. Rachel is also swatching for the Angostura Vest by Ysolda Teague that she's planning on knitting out of her new purchase of Cornish Tin. Allison also has a few FOs: the Sproutlette Dress and Tiny Shoes that are a gift for a friend's new baby. Allison has also installed her first zipper on the cardigan/jacket/Skulls Hoodie that she's finished for her brother. Everything else is being pushed to the side now for Grettir, that she hopes to finish in time for Christmas and her WIP of Quaking Aspen in The Fibre Co.'s Acadia yarn continues. We're both also getting ready for Spinzilla which starts at 12:01am on Monday, 5th October and we've got plans to spin up some SweetGeorgia fibre - and whatever else we can lay our hands on! Confessions of (former) cold sheepers: We confess our sins at falling off the cold sheep wagon, although it would appear that Allison's transgressions of three sweater quantities are far worse than Rachel's three skeins. Hmmmm... NEW FEATURE - Yarn in the City on the Road! Something new for us to talk about on the podcasts, the various shops that we've been visiting. Rachel tells us all about the glory and wonder that is Fancy Tiger Crafts in Denver, CO and you can also read her blog post and drool over the photos - they're yummy! As usual you can find us at The Goat Pub in Clapham Junction on Wednesday nights from 7pm, or in our Ravelry group, on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!
In which we offer condolences to the "Car Talk family", start a new contest for a Boston Jen design, congratulate Wilson for his "Top 100" chess status, Marie's debut in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade*, Gale Woods Farm, Jan's new job, Buddhist housekeeping, NYC visits to daughter's restaurants (well, restaurants at which daughters play key roles) knitting retreats that bring healing, new playwrites and playing in parks, Dr. Yarn's anger management techniques, Spinzilla and designing for flow, and try to catch up on many other aspects of life! *Update! Marie will not be a Christmas tree -- instead she will be a pirate, a treasure chest or a shark devouring a person as one of the wire walkers for the "Pirate's Booty" balloon. She hopes she gets to be a shark!
First in the podcast, some thoughts on the wide variety of niche markets we have in this fiber world. Then I tell about my three Spinzilla projects and how I figured my yardage for submission to their total amounts. There is more music in today's podcast, and it is from Musicalley First interlude is from Space Agency and is called Godzilla. Middle break music is from the FuMP, always a fun romp, and is also called Godzilla (yes just pretend it is really Spinzilla). Since this group has lots and lots of songs, find this specific one by searching Godzilla on Musicalley. The closing song is by Tracy Jane Comer and is Drive for Miles. I think of it as Spin for Miles since that is one of the measurements used by Spinzilla. Lovely song, whether you are driving or spinning.
