October is not only a great time to celebrate fiber (what with the Lambtown and Rhinebeck festivals, just to name a few), but it's also Breast Cancer Awareness month.  How do we get both things in one podcast?  Knitted Knockers!Barbara Demorest is the Feisty Lady with Fortitude who took a horrible event in life and made it into something that has helped millions to cope with the ravages of breast cancer.  We hope you tune in to see what she did, and maybe even how you can be a part of what this amazing organization does to help others.  And all with a bit of fiber and friendship.P.S.  We miss you, Mom, but we'll keep trying to save the udders (always one for a good pun, she was).Links:https://www.knittedknockers.org/https://www.lambtown.org/https://sheepandwool.com/Support the show

Our guest today is the absolutely amazing Jayashree Ratan the co-founder of Saaisha India Foundation- a Mumbai-based charitable organization founded along with her husband Mr. Kumar Ratan. After resigning from her banking service, Jayashree came across the Knitted Knockers site on her visit to the US. A visit to a relative who had undergone a mastectomy  & gifting her a pair of knockers, it was the feedback  that made Jayashree start Saisha on March 13th, 2018.  Today Saaisha India is registered with Washington state-based knittedknockers.org of USA as one of the providers of 100% cotton breast prostheses for Mastectomy patients (lovingly called “Knockers”) in India. They follow the patterns and processes of knittedknockers.org of USA and the Knockers are provided Free of cost including postage. Experienced knitters & crocheters who join Saaisha India knit & crochet these prostheses as per the approved pattern, which are then filled up with poly fiber and given to the mastectomy patients who are called beneficiaries. Even experienced Knitters/ Crocheters have to undergo training initially so that perfect knockers are made. Saaisha has several quality control checks to ensure this. The volunteers have no targets and are free to make as many or as little as they want. Saaisha's Volunteer base has grown from 21 in 2018 to currently over 350 spread across 5 countries. The Knockers are made generally in 4 cup sizes A, B, C, and D. If the patient has undergone a single mastectomy they are provided with 2 Knockers, and those who have undergone bilateral mastectomy are provided with 4 knockers. Beneficiaries are given replacement Knockers Free on request after 24 months. The feedback received by Saaisha from beneficiaries indicates a high level of satisfaction especially relating to the restoration of confidence, light weight, not feeling hot, unlike other prostheses, easy to maintain, etc., More information can be had on Saaisha India web page https://saaishaindia.org/ You Tube site https://www.youtube.com/@saaishaindia2096 For further details, please contact Jayashree Ratan +91 77009 90212 OR Srividya Gopinath +91 98404 62708 Facebook: saaishaindia Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/saaishaindia/ You Tube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS7RsZ23_AxCFjnFvwmNUZQ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-third-eye1/message

Episode 71 – Be A Helper Craftalong – we’ll go over the (simple) rules and some ideas for what you can make.   Be A Helper Craftalong 4th Be A Helper Craftalong has begun! We keep the rules simple. Anything you make for any charity counts, doesn’t have to be knit/crochet/woven or spun. ANYthing you make for ANY charity. One FO per photo in the FO thread Donating blood counts too - post a photo of your bandaid or of you drinking OJ afterwards, something like that. FO Thread closes when I wake up April 1st. Wips are welcome Prizes 1 skein of Sock Yarn from A Great Yarn in Chatham, MA dyed exclusively for them by Hauteknits in the Finest Hours colorway, 75% merino, 25% nylon 1 25g skein of Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock plus a mini skein of handspun Spun to order handspun, by me. I have 2 or 3 colorways that I’ll let the winner choose for me to spin up. Need some ideas? Check out these charities: Preemie Hats – check with your local hospital for yarn requirements. These need to be washed in an industrial strength washing machine so there may be limits, many only accept acrylic/nylon. If your local hospital isn’t accepting hats, Dana from the Unwind Yarn Company collects them from her retreat attendees in the fall and I’ll be happy to collect them and mail them to her with my own in September. Greg, aka Knitting Daddy of the Unraveling podcast also has accepted mailed hats in the past for his local hospital. Knitted Knockers– these are prostheses for breast cancer survivors who have not had or cannot have reconstructive surgery. Knockers must be made with plant based yarn – wool is too scratchy on scar tissue – and a list of acceptable yarns is linked in the shownotes available via PDF and there are top down and bottom-up patterns on their website. Mother Bears– I learned of this charity from the 2 Knit Lit Chicks who run a Mother Bear KAL every year. These bears provide comfort to children who are victim of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. Mother Bear will snail mail you the knitting or crochet pattern for a small fee. All they ask is that you return the finished bear with $3 to cover the shipping to Africa. KnitAid– has USA and UK branches. UK is currently collecting hats, mittens, blankets and water bottle covers.  All items must be knit in dark-colored yarn because the recipients will not be able to wash them easily. CompassionKnit- Bay Area, CA charity that gives handknit items to foster kids, most of whom have very few belongings of their own. A gift knit especially for them, something a stranger took hours and hours to make just for them, is something they cherish. Animal Rescue Craft Guild – knit, crochet or sew Joey pouches, bat wraps, nests, possum pouches, etc for animal survivors of the devastating wildfires in Australia. Before crafting, check the announcements on the FB page (linked in the show notes) as the graphic is updated with what they do and do not need.  They work closely with carers and animal rescue groups and update the graphic regularly.  Please be aware they currently have plenty of koala mittens but are in need of a lot of other help. A Great Yarn in Chatham, MA runs an annual blanket project for the homeless population on Cape Cod. Use any washable worsted-weight yarn to make a panel 1-foot [30cm] by 6 feet [1.8 m] and drop it off or mail it to the shop, mailing address in show notes.  Their goal this year is 250 blankets.  A Great Yarn 894 Main Street Chatham, MA 02633 A local homeless shelter or domestic violence shelter. Please check with them before assuming they take items, but many are happy to accept gifts of socks, hats, scarves and mittens especially in the winter. Do you have a charity craft idea that you think others would like to hear about? Let me know and I’ll talk about it on a future episode. Episode 35! We're all in for fall this week! We enjoy an autumnal cocktail crafted by K and her husband involving Pumpkin Spice Cider and Rumson's Spiced Rum, an extremely warming and yummy drink. After some discussion of recent events, like a 4-day Nor'easter and furnace maintenance, we get to our main topic: Halloween whines. J hates horror movies, and doesn't get why people like being scared. K shares in a dislike of Haunted Houses and Fright Fest events (especially those ones where people chase/follow you!). K's main complaint is having a partner who won't wear a Halloween costume. We're both fans of planning out/crafting a costume and the opportunity to be something else. J is making her first Knitted Knockers and K is still fighting with that complicated baby blanket pattern. Good news: K's dad was born and J got to see the Lion King musical! Cheers!

Episode 33! Our "Jesus" episode (or something). We enjoy a Dry Rose from Pinnacle Ridge Winery in Kutztown, PA - described as a Rose for red wine drinkers. J talks about the infestation of Lantern Flies in PA and how one traumatized her on her most recent trip. We then discuss sidewalk etiquette and other pedestrian issues, especially while trying to navigate a large city. Topics include: slow people, taking up too much room on the sidewalk, herd mentality, entitled actions, massholes, pointless honking, and being willing to help people who look lost. We both started new projects this week - K finished a bunch of things she's been working on including baby blankets and an infinity scarf, and J started another secret Christmas project that involves 3 skeins of yarn and a size Q crochet hook. We also discuss making size B knockers for Knitted Knockers. K is happy to attend a diversity and inclusion conference for work in Baltimore, and J is excited that she got to go to an Oktoberfest and wear her dirndl! We're joined this week on the phone by K's friend Anna, who's launched her own crafting career. We drank some of Knapp Winery's Superstition which is a red wine that apparently tastes like "grape pie"...or grape juice? Anna enjoys a Cape May Brewing Company lager which is good with hotdogs and hamburgers. We then discuss the perils of the three day weekend, including planning too much to do and regretting it later, having SO MUCH work to do in only four days when you get back, the transition from summer to school year, traffic, and having people expect that for some reason you're still working even though it's a holiday. Anna then shares how she came to start her crafting business, Koaster Kween (@koasterkween on Instagram), and the excitement of learning new ways to craft and using materials like baking clay, acrylics, and resin to make funky cool coasters. Anna also tells us about her journey into bread making, including learning the proper way to make sourdough bread and her recent attempt at Cuban bread! J is working on a Christmas present (so no spoilers in this episode) but she also shares the awesome deal she got yarn shopping at AC Moore. K had a super productive week of knitting, finishing one baby blanket and a bunch of Knitted Knockers and starting a new baby blanket. Anna is happy to have had a relaxing three-day weekend with her family, J is happy students are back on campus, K is grateful for Inkbox and the ability to make temporary bad decisions. Cheers! Episode 27! It's just us this week, holding down the fort. K regails us with a story about a pet python and her desire to never meet it. We drink a slightly spicy pomegranate wine from Lakeland Winery in Syracuse, NY (one of K's 22 bottles she brought back from the Finger Lakes). Speaking of spice, J brings the whine this week that August is not Pumpkin Spice Season. We discuss corporations' need to rush us into the next season before we've fully enjoyed the season we're in (including Dunkin', Starbucks, and Disney) and how those corporate-concocted seasons seem to be arbitrary with their end dates. This leads to a discussion of living in a culture that promotes having everything you want when you want it instead of paying attention to things like seasons for foods, and always looking to the future instead of enjoying the present. We also ask the question, "Can we be happy with what we have?" J finally started a new yarn project this week - a crocheted slouchy hat - and K is working on orders for Knitted Knockers as Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October) is quickly approaching. We also update you, dear listener, on the progress of our Super Secret Crafting Project of gifts for one of our first 10 listeners who review us (check out our instagram, @wwkdpodcast, for a teaser pic!). K also whines about not knowing what to pack for a new kind of travel experience and whether she should bring a small blender on a plane. We then talk about what kinds of yarn projects travel well and K shares that she's finished another pair of knockers for Knitted Knockers. J's craft project this week includes fabric paint and glitter to make acceptable footwear for the wedding she's in. The farm business is called Alpaca Pines and their website can be found here. There was a what I called a wood ball winder that I was unable to find online to show you. I have found out since that this item has another use, which is to hold the ball of yarn wound on to it as you knit. So the concept for it I think is to wind the yarn on it from a skein and then let it sit near you as you knit, it will rotate release the yarn. No balls of yarn rolling away from you. I was not able to find any 1500 yard one dye lot skeins of yarn online, like I saw in the market. I think this concept is a custom dye project, so if interested contact your favorite dyer, see if they can purchase the yarn in the large skein and dye it for you.

Barbara has traveled to Rwanda to teach women how to knit their own knitted knockers. Episode39 – 5/25/18 – Knitting and Running in 30 minutes or less Today’s segments include Be A Helper Craft-a-long, including Prizes and some Charity Ideas, Wips, Spinning, Running and today’s Knitting Talk will answer the question – “Why did you start a podcast?” Be A Helper Summer 2018 As I mentioned last week, the Be A Helper KAL is back for the summer.  We went over most of the details but I’ll go over a few updates quickly today and a few addendums (thanks to those who reached out with some questions!) Last episode I said that this was a KAL for anything you knit, crochet, weave or spin but someone pointed out that during the last KAL I said any craft. I’m going to go with what we used previously – ANY thing you make for ANY charity will count.  I’m still running the craft-a-long on Ravelry, but you do not need to link to a project page.  Just post a photo of your finished item in the thread on Ravelry and tell us who you are donating it to!  Donating blood still counts, too. Another listener point out that it’s a pain trying to get all the photos up in time for Stash Dash and ending things the same night could be an issue for some, and I whole heartedly agree. So I’m giving you an extra week.  We start on May 25th and will end August 31st.  You have all summer to finish your charity work.  Please post 1 picture per finished object in the thread. Wips are allowed! Double or triple dip in any KAL you want, I totally encourage this! Prizes – So far we have three prizes , one skein of FishKnits Yarn in the At Sixes and Sevens colorway, a self-striping Merino-nylon sock yarn, one skein on non-wool yarn of my choosing though I’d love to hear any input for you folks – anything you’ve been tempted to knit with? And lastly a huge thanks to Tiffany from The Project Bag who is offering a free project bag and matching notions pouch and she will ship it anywhere in the world!  Tiffany sent over an example photo and I’m posting it in the Ravelry group.  The prize won’t be the exact fabric pattern shown, but the bags will coordinate and her photo will give you an idea of her gorgeous handiwork.   Charity Ideas If you don’t have a charity you currently craft for, I’m going to talk about a few here that may be of interest to you: Preemie Hats – check with your local hospital for yarn requirements. These need to be washed in an industrial strength washing machine so there may be limits.  If your local hospital isn’t accepting hats, Dana from the Unwind Yarn Company is collecting them from her retreat attendees this fall and may be willing to accept a few more via mail if you contact her.  Greg, aka Knitting Daddy of the Unraveling podcast also has accepted mailed hats in the past for his local hospital. Knitted Knockers – these are prostheses for breast cancer survivors who have not or cannot have reconstructive surgery. Knockers must be made with plant based yarn – wool is too scratchy on scar tissue – and a list of acceptable yarns is linked in the who notes along with the free patterns. Mother Bears – I learned of this charity from the 2 Knit Lit Chicks and they are currently running their Mother Bear KAL. These bears provide comfort to children who are victim of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Afrca.  Mother Bear will snail mail you the knitting or crochet pattern for a small fee.  All they ask is that you return the finished bear with $3 to cover the shipping to Africa.  KnitAid – has USA and UK Neither is currently collecting, but you could knit scarves or hats or baby clothes for next winter.  All items must be knit in dark-colored yarn because the recipients will not be able to wash them easily. Do you have a charity craft idea that you think others would like to hear about?  Let me know and I’ll talk about it on a future episode.  Send me a PM on Ravelry, I’m WindsweptMonique, or email me at windsweptMonique@gmail.com WIPS I’ve put a couple of rows onto my Changing Staircases shawl by Jenga Knits.  This is a shawl inspired by the Harry Potter books, the way the staircases are constantly changing and I’m working on it in Mousou a 100% bamboo yarn from The FiberLady. I turned the heel on my 52-stitch sock, which is using the Fish Lips Kiss heel and Cobasi by Hikoo, which is a bamboo, cotton, silk and nylon blend.  Those of you who’ve used that pattern will understand why I can be so precise about the 1/3! The Addition By Subtraction Mystery Knit A Long, I am 1/3 of the way through Clue #2.  I am working on this in 4 colors of 3 different yarns.  For the light color I’m using Ito Yarn’s Washi in the Crocus colorway, a pale purple.  This is a Japanese style paper yarn, laceweight, and I‘m holding it double.  The dark is Ito Yarn’s Kinu, a laceweight silk in the Grey colorway and I’m holding it double.  The zany is  Your Crazy is Showing from Birdie’s Knits and it is a crazy combination of every color you can imagine but it looks beautiful.  Lastly I’m using another Kinu, the Plum colorway which is actually a dark pastel pink, not purple as the name might imply.  There is a slipped stitch section which caused me a little bit of a headache given that silk and paper yarns have absolutely no stretch to them, but I’ve learned how to knit that section more loosely than normal and it’s actually working out nicely. Spinning Still practicing on my wheel.  Don’t quite have the hang of it yet.  Tried spinning the bamboo sample I got from The Fiber Lady at stitches United and boy was that easier!  I now understand why long staple fibers are much preferred!  But I am going to keep trying.  My problem seems to be getting that first bit twisted and onto the bobbin.  Once I have it I can sustain it for a little while, but getting started is not my forte!   Knitting Talk I was recently asked, why did I start a podcast?  As I’ve now passed my 1st podaversary, I decided to tackle that question here. First off, I LOVE podcasts.  I started listening back in 2005 and currently on my phone I am subscribed to 109 podcasts, 12 of which are for my kids.  Some are weekly, some put out 15-20 a year and some are like Serial and every now and then you get 10 in a row.  So it’s not quite as insane as it sounds.  No, I do not keep up do date with all of them – I am still far behind after going to FL for 10 days in February but I’m slowly catching up while driving, cooking, cleaning, etc.  I also listen at 1.5x which makes a 60 minute podcast take only about 40 minutes so that helps. Back to this particular podcast – I had been considering starting a podcast for about 2-3 years and kept putting it off because of family, kids, lack of time, etc.  I was super stressed and a bit down in the dumps and I finally decided to take on a project just for me.  I’d just gotten in to SSK a few weeks before and then listening to the Just One More Row podcast, Dana was talking about exactly that, getting lost in motherhood and the doldrums of thousands of thankless tasks and how taking time for herself and doing projects just for herself was really helping.  That was the lightbulb moment I needed and I decided to just go out and do it.  I bought a microphone, downloaded Audacity and released the first episode on March 14th, 2017.  The sound quality was horrible, and I was so incredibly nervous, but I did it.  And I’m so glad I did!  Now more than a year on, I have met so many wonderful people because of this podcast.  It’s been a joy.  Running How long should your shoes last?  “Experts” say 300-500 miles, depending on how much wear and tear they get.  But if you see any damage, change shoes right away!  Also, if you see uneven wear on the bottom of your shoe, (e.g., more wear on the inside edge than the outside edge, or vice versa) then be SURE to go to a running store (and bring your current shoes!).  They can help you find the right type of shoe to stop that and help prevent injuries down the road.

Episode 38 – 5/15/18 - Knitting and Running in 30 minutes or less WindsweptMonique on Ravelry and Instagram, windsweptmonique@gmail.com. Visit my new website at WindsweptKnits.com and stream the podcast or read shownotes.  Thanks so much for listening!  There are 1000’s of podcasts for you to choose from and I am honored you take time out of your busy life to listen to mine.  Segments this week include: Stash Acquisition, Wips, KALs, Running Stash Acquisition I held off recording last week because I had no knew knitting and also I knew what I’d be getting for Mother’s Day which is…  a spinning wheel!  My finger still isn’t healed yet so I’m in a finger brace part-time and still can’t knit nearly as much as I want to, so my boys bought me a Lendrum!  They also got the Very Fast Flyer so I can spin cotton.  I am SUPER excited and slightly daunted.  I’ve tried using it a few times and I’m horrible at the moment.  I hold my fiber too close to the wheel to get a good spin in the cotton.  Also, I’m used to having the fiber not move while I’m drafting.  So balancing the spin with the pullup on to the bobbin is challenging.  Luckily, I know exactly what I’m looking for in the spun cotton so a few times I’ve managed to get a small amount of decently spun single on the bobbin.  And I cannot tell you how excited I am to have a tensioned lazy kate and the plying head to I don’t have to ply on a drop spindle! Spinning I’ve been working on a new spinning project using Hipstring’s A Beautiful Day cotton colorway.  This is from the first shipment of her Cotton Club, which I highly recommend.  I’ve only gotten a little bit done but it is coming along beautifully.  Jill’s cotton is a joy to spin. Wips Lady and the Unicorn, as I mentioned last week, this is part of a series of medieval tapestries held at the Musee de Cluny.  In particular, the one I am stitching is based on the one labelled “A Mon Seul Desir” and a few days ago I finished working on the current chart page!  I’m pretty sure I started that page at least 5 years ago.  And I’m heading to stitching group tonight so I get to stitch some more. I’ve put a row or 2 onto my Changing Staircases shawl by Jenga Knits.  This is a shawl inspired by the Harry Potter books, the way the stiarcases are constantly changing and I’m working on it in Mousou a 100% bamboo yarn from The FiberLady. I’ve also put a few rows on my 52-stitch sock, which is using the Fish Lips Kiss heel and Cobasi by Hikoo, which is a bamboo, cotton, silk and nylon blend. Last but not least – I have a new cast on!  I cast on a shawl on Mother’s Day!  I’m joining the Addition By Subtraction Mystery Knit A Long, albeit a few weeks late.  This is a “mystery” mystery knit along – a murder mystery knit a long to be exact.  I love a good murder mystery novel – Agatha Christie is one of my favorite authors – so even though the story is more of a film noire type it’s still right up my alley.  I’m on the first clue and I’m having a blast playing a long.  I did have to rip back a few rows because my 4th color wasn’t quite working right with the others, but luckily I had another good colorway on hand. This pattern was designed and released along with the LYS day so I chose stash I had on hand from my yarn store that closed, one from another localish yarn store and ordered one skein from an indie dyer that I love, Birdie’s Knits from Florida.  Her hand dyed organic cotton is to die for (har har!).  The pattern calls for a light color, a dark color, a slightly zany color and a color to tie it all together, all in fingering weight.  For the light color I’m using Ito Yarn’s Washi in the Crocus colorway, a pale purple.  This is a Japanese style paper yarn, laceweight, and ‘m holding it double. Knit A Longs Geeky Girls Sheepy Spring AL runs through May 31st and I am a sponsor. TheKnitGirllls’ Stash Dash is an annual WIP-finish KAL.  Compete against yourself to see how much yardage you can complete from May 25th to August 27th.  Can you knit 1000m?  Maybe a whole 5k?  The bonus here is that if you knit a row on a project you can cound ALL the yardage for the project.  Also, spinning counts, where last year you could count the length of all the singles so a 200m 3-ply yarn would count as 600m.  I should note, there are rule changes up for voting at the moment so take that last spinning rule with a grain of salt. In A Sknit’s Batter Up KAL has begun – knit your way through baseball season!  I’m a sponsor for this one, too.  There are many opportunities for prizes across the season including at the All Star break and during the World Series. Last but not least – My Summer 2018 Be A Helper KAL.  I will run this in tandem with Stash Dash because I know a lot of you will be trying to use up every last scrap of yarn for those 3 months and preemie hats and Knitted Knockers are perfect stash-busting projects.  Project rules will be the same as last winter – ANYTHING you knit, crochet, weave or spin for ANY charity counts.  One entry per FO – you can enter 10 preemie hats will count as 10 entries.  Also, donating blood counts as 1 entry, just post a photo of yourself either in the chair, or with the bandaid, or selfie sipping your OJ afterwards.  If you would like to offer a prize for this KAL, please PM me on Ravelry or email me at WindsweptMonique@gmail.com, any prizes would be greatly appreciated!  I will be offering two skeins from my own stash, the first is a skein from FishKnits Yarn in the At Sixes and Sevens colorway, a self-striping Merino-nylon sock yarn.  The other one will be a non-wool yarn TBD; I’m currently debating between a silk yarn, a Japanese paper-style yarn, or a plant-based yarn.  If you have any thoughts on which I should offer, please let me know!   Running My running training is going well so far.  I’m walking my son home from school most days, so that’s 1.5 miles each afternoon.  Some days I run, and some it’s just a lazy stroll as an “active rest day”.  Yesterday I did my first 4-miler since before I was pregnant with my youngest son, who’s almost 3, and it felt great! Historically, the 4-6 mile area was my least favorite distance but I wonder if that will change since I haven’t tackled that distance in years.  I’ve been lax about strength training the last few weeks because of the brace on my finger, but now that I’m only wearing the brace part time I’m going to start strength training twice a week.  I need to listen to my own advice eh?  Keep strength training!

Why Knitted Knockers? Knitted Knockers was founded by one courageous woman after hearing the diagnosis that so many women fear – breast cancer. When Barb was unable to have reconstructive surgery, she found herself turning to fiber arts to feel “whole” again. Little did she know that this was the start of a new journey; a journey allowing her and a team of volunteers to help so many women. Today’s Guest I’m joined by, Barb Demorest, the amazing woman behind Knitted Knockers. You’ll Learn How Knitted Knockers began and what their mission is. In this episode Marsha and Kelly talk about the the Northern California Knitters Retreat (#NoCKRs on Instagram for more photos). The FABULOUS and FUN retreat was held at the St. Francis Retreat Center.  We had such a great time!  Thanks to the organizers and to Duren Dyeworks and Kicks and Giggles for donating the door prizes that we won.  Thanks also to Dizzy Blonde Studios, Miss Babs, Alana Dakos of Never Not Knitting, Buffy Ann Designs, and Gnome Acres for all the goodies in our NoCKRs bags. We had fun knitting and meeting new friends. We also found treasures in the destash room and made some stitch markers. The charity for the retreat was Knitted Knockers.  Participants donated over 90 of them for women who have had mastectomies. There was a show and tell of knitwear that led us to yet another discussion of fit!  We know we said we wouldn't discuss it again for awhile, but we learned some interesting things by looking at all those sweaters.  After the retreat we enjoyed fabulous burgers at JJ's in San Juan Bautista. After our  conversation about the retreat, I podcast with some feathered co-hosts about some of my upcoming adventures.  Subscribe in iTunes. Find us on Stitcher.

Episode: 40 Production scheduling Production What’s in My Teapot Materials Sourcing Shipping After 5 Production Gnome Socks By Spilly Jane Drop stitch Scarf by Lisa Buccellato found in the spring and summer 2012 issue of vogue knitting. I’m not usually one for pink and girly but I really like this! I’m knitting this from Cascade Pima Cotton in a lovely pinky lavender color # 3710 I cast this on last night and tore through the chart the first time. Started a second round on the chart and noticed that that little chicken foot symbol that I had been reading as an Sk2P (a centered decrease) was in the 1st part of the pattern a K3TOG ( right leaning decrease). . It’s a good thing I was only 1 ½ chart repeats in, frogging won’t be as painful as it could have been. Knitted Knockers of a Good Yarn Shop Knitted Knockers is part of Debbie Macomber’s Knit 1 Bless 2 initiative for 2012. I found out about them through a suggestion on my knit groups face book page. The pattern is free and can be linked to through Debbie Macomber’s web site or through www.agoodyarnshop.com I cast on the second of the pair I hoped to get from my little ball of Rowan Hand Knit Cotton. It’s my night stand knitting. I don’t usually knit in bed but now that we have net flix in the bed room it’s become tempting. Hexipuff Count for the week. Zero :P What’s In My Tea Pot Lipton’s Green Tea Super Fruit white Mangosteen and Peach There is no information about the tea on the back of the box! Ingredients include Soy Lecithin and Sunflower Lecithin. I thought this was a preservative. I found a blog from 2007 with a ton more information on Lecithin and its health properties. Not for the squeamish though as they talk about how Lecithin is made which almost made me spit out the tea. The words “foul smelling Sludge” were involved. I found this tea unremarkable. I can taste the peach. I have no idea what a mangosteen tasted like so I’m not sure if that’s in there at all. I’ll finish the box but I won’t rush out to replenish it. Shipping Ruffled and Ruched Scarf by Pam Powers Finished on the day of the party. I was even a bit late… I think it went over pretty well. Lot’s of oohs and ahhhs over how soft the Alpaca / Acrylic was. I wonder if something like Ultra alpaca or and alpaca silk blend would have received better or worse reviews… would a non fiberphile know to be suitably impressed? I finally got to knit the flower! Last time I ran out of yarn. My flower ended up being about muffin sized but turned out quite well. The thought was that the flower could be used as an accessory to other pieces when it’s too warm for the scarf. The flower is great but to attach it to a hat would be a pretty big statement. I still love this pattern and I wouldn’t hesitate to pull it out again for another semi quick gift knit. Uber Secret Christmas socks I’m ashamed to say that after Christmas I didn’t jump right on resizing the Uber Secret Christmas socks. They instead languished on the project pile. I tore back the 1st one a few weeks ago and got it the point that I was ready to graft the toe. Then I over thought it and decided I’d better have my mom try them on before I graft it just to be sure on size. Back to the pile it went. I finally saw my mom this week and had her try it on. Nate just happened to walk past as this was happening and said …. “Geez mom… How many months has it been?” He’s great for a guilt trip. I’m happy to say that both socks have been adjusted, the toes have been grafted, and mom can wear them to Camp Kip. Materials Sourcing On the wheel 4 ozs of Merino from Copperpot Woolies in Cotton Candy. Still on the wheel Minimal progress so far. I started the second bobbin and I got to the point where I want to move to the second hook. In the market for a fleece. It’s one of my goals this year to knit a sweater that fits me. I’ve picked the Rivulet by Shanon Okey The Knitmores are doing their Spakal but I’m not fond of their KAL sweater so I figured I’d spin along and then do my own Knit thing. I’ll be on the lookout for a fleece. To get some education on what to look for I’ll be visiting with Liz from Ewenique Fiber’s in a few week. I will NOT be processing this fleece my self. I’ll be sending this one out. Besides it’ll be much more fun when several lbs of roving show up at the door and Joe flips over “is that MORE WOOL!” Bobbin winder Since I still have problems spinning a consistent single I’ve decided to spin all the singles 1st and then ply all at the end hoping to even everything out. Which led me to wonder does Babe make a bobbin winder? Sadly they do not. But I’ve had some good advice from ravelry. After 5 Strep Throat B and Joe have been under foot all this week. B has been home sick since last Thursday. We thought it was just a cold and didn’t think much of it as we had a doctor apt for him on Tuesday (Kindergarten registration is this week and I wanted him to get his shots up to date.) When we took him in they diagnosed strep. He never even complained about a sore throat. Knook – Knitting But Not A few weeks ago I was wandering in the knitting needle aisle in Hobby Lobby. I went in for fiber fill for Hexipuffs ended up looking at sock yarn and needles. I loose dpns all the time. So when ever I see a good price or a new color I pick up a set. They have sz 2s in purple…. They also have knitting oddities like adjustable sock looms, heart shaped pom pom makers, and The Knook How are they not getting sued by Barnes and Noble? When I first saw this I thought I was buying a Tunisian crochet kit. This is NOT Tunisian Crochet. What’s in the kit Three lovely little wooden crochet hooks with pointed tail ends that have holes in them. (Wha….?) 3 different colored silk cords that I thought were yarn samples to make the 1st project with. Instruction book. Method to the madness Thread the silk cord though the hole on the crochet hook. Crochet a starter chain. Pull up loops along the chain and instead of finishing a crochet stitch the loops get left on the hook. If your cast on edge is longer that the hook the stitches will slide onto the silk cord. (ahhhhh so that’s what the cord is for….) At the end of the row slide the stitches onto the cord and turn the work. From here on out it’s basically knitting with a hook and no needle in the left hand. I found the Knook incredibly wonky and counter intuitive. Perhaps if I hadn’t had so much experience with having a needle in my left hand and having the work be a bit more rigid I would have taken to the nook. But I couldn’t get over how “wrong “it felt. The knook is an interesting novelty that I’m sorry to say some well meaning non knitter will probably buy as a gift for an unsuspecting knitter. Fun if it’s free not worth the 10 bucks I paid. bbbbb

Episode: 39 Production scheduling Production Knitting Mojo exhausted What’s in My Teapot Materials Sourcing After 5 Production Gnome Socks By Spilly Jane Another week of little progress. Last time we talked I wasn’t liking my tension which was skewing my gauge. The big debate was to Frog, perfect and frog, or Plunge on. I’m taking the path of least resistance and plunging forward with an eye to perfect and frog. I also manage to botch the pattern this week. Which has made me lay these down in disgust. (With myself… and my lack of skills…) So Despite having a few more rows done I’m pretty much in the same conundrum … “To frog, or not to frog, that is the question: Whether 'tis Nobler in the mind to sufferThe Slings and Arrows of outrageous color work, Or to take up needles against a Sea of troubles…” Back onto the project pile they go. Ruffled and Ruched Scarf by Pam Powers Ruffed and Ruched Redux The party is next weekend! ARGH! Where have I frittered my time away to?! I finished the 1st half. Unraveled the provisional cast on and will be starting the final ribbing on the scarf. With any luck my knitting mojo will hold up and I’ll be able to finish this before I have to wrap it on the 31st. As mentioned last week this is a gift for someone who I’m not totally convinced will not A) turn it into a cat bed or B) toss it in the wash so I’m using and acrylic / alpaca blend. I believe this is a Hobby Lobby house brand. I like the color, the feel is nice and soft… about as far away from crunch as acrylic get but I’m _really_ not happy about the knots. I had one knot that was a complete break and 2 that one ply had a break and was knotted and plied to a non – broken single. REALLY?! Knitted Knockers of a Good Yarn Shop Knitted Knockers is part of Debbie Macomber’s Knit 1 Bless 2 initiative for 2012. I found out about them through a suggestion on my knit groups face book page. I try to be fairly open to trying any thing once so why not try to knit a prosthetic breast. The pattern is free and can be linked to through Debbie Macomber’s web site or through www.agoodyarnshop.com The pattern calls for cotton or any soft and washable yarn. I picked up some Rowan Hand Knitting Cotton at the yarn shop this week for mine in a mauve that Joe calls “Bright Red”. All in all the pattern is easy. The hardest part was starting out with the i-cord and then increasing in each stitch to work in the round. Doesn’t sound hard but the needles were a bit “fiddly” in my opinion with only 2 stitches a piece. Nothing insurmountable and since the back side is decreased in the same way at the front increases knitting the back before the front doesn’t help. I knit a B cup the pattern can be sized to a DD. I went with the smallish size so as to maybe be able to complete a pair from my tiny ball of yarn. I finished it in one night so this is a quick and easy piece of charity knitting that can be done socially. Note for the squeamish… it looks like a baby hat. No one need know what it truly is… unless of course you’re like me and my knit group co hort who though maybe a piercing would jazz it up… Hexipuff Count for the week. ½ I took it along to knit group and I ran out of yarn ½ ways into my puff. What’s In My Tea Pot Oriental Treasure Green Tea (The Boston Tea Company) I was bumming around Tuesday Morning looking for yarn and I found tea! Almost as good. Back of tin: Even though the canister says Connoisseur’s Favorite. I beg to differ. For a Green this tea goes bitter quick. This may be a case of “I bought tea at Tuesday Morning….” But BLECH. Even the packaging is clunky the top of the canister has come off several times and dumped the canister into my desk drawer. (Why I have some sort of crushed herb in my desk drawer is not something I want to discuss with HR! “It’s tea! Honest!”) I also don’t believe that what’s in this canister could be considered “Loose Leaf” It’s crushed beyond belief and could at best be considered Fannings. Lesson learned… if it’s marked down from 6.99 to 2.99, probably not worth drinking. Materials Sourcing Whatever it was that sapped my knitting Mojo didn’t extend to my spinning, Finished! The Jacob Fleece from the Anne Arbor Fiber expo. A lot of burrs and that wonkiness with the staple length. But with all that kvetching and complaining what I think was 4 oz of fiber turned into gorgeous and squishy DK worsted – ish (some heavier some lighter…) yarn. When I first started swatching for plying. I thought I’d want a nice rustic, chunky, three ply. But when I knit up the two ply the gray and black made gorgeous stripes that faded into each other. While the heavier three ply just muddled the colors. In the end I could part with the stripes. SO another thinner yarn into the stash. Squeezing this yarn makes me happy this week. So I have it hanging in the dining room so I can squish it every time I walk by. Black Cherry Mystery Wool Roving Finally this ball of roving is done. In my world just about everything has its place. I do tend to get grumpy though when I buy something expecting it to behave a certain way and find out that I’ve been sold a bill of goods. When I bought this fiber the section I “tested” was too small and I was too inexperienced to see what I was getting. The small piece I drafted out looked smooth and lovely. What I got was a textured roving that was never meant to be the smooth yarn I had in my head. It’s spun now in to a pretty cool “arty” yarn full of lumps and bumps. Not the softest thing in the world but will make an awesome hat or Pair of mittens. 4 oz came in at 297 yds. On the wheel I took a look through my stash and I wanted something with bright colors and something easy. I need a break from the veg matter and issues the Jacob and to a lesser extent my homemade camel batt had. So I pulled out a 4 oz ball of Merino from Copperpot Woolies in Cotton Candy. This was the ball I had to go “Hockey Mom” (A well place elbow / hip combo…. Just Kidding. But I did grab it and ran away when she turned her head to talk to her friend…) the colors in this are lime green, Aqua Blue, and an Electric purple. I’ve about half a bobbin so far and it’s spinning like “buttah”. The colors make me smile. I can’t wait to see how this plies up. After 5 What a Week. Joe had a Brush with unemployment. The stress is what probably killed my knitting Mojo. St Patty’s Day Truffles So Rich…. Sooo Good…. Soooo Simple. 1 Package of Cool Mint Oreos 22 with Filling 8-10 Without 1 Brick of Cream Cheese Smash the Oreos and combine with cream cheese.  Roll mixture into balls for centers and cool in fridge or Freezer on Wax paper to firm up. Melt Chocolate for Coating.  I got mine at party city green was on sale.  Zap in Microwave for 30 second intervals until smooth.  Coat centers.  (use a fork to coat and then tap off the excess chocolate.)   Melt white chocolate in a Ziploc.  Snip off corner and drizzle whit over green or Pipe on shamrocks.  (Use a tooth pick to smooth out the shamrock) It’s that easy. B’s Birthday party at the Science Center Dry Ice + Bubble Solution = Awsome! People who RSVP and don’t show… GRRRRR The Vacation that wasn’t We had planned to see the Shed Aquarium and the Field Museum in Chicago this week. Long story short… there were some “Elder Health” issues and my Ollie sitter had to cancel so we stayed home. Oh well…. There’s always next year. bbb
