Hello, I'm Michael Liebreich, and this is Cleaning Up.I hope you are having a good break over the holiday season, and getting to spend some quality time with your family. I'm in Switzerland, where it has just snowed about a meter in 24 hours. In case you're missing your regular dose of climate content, we're starting something new, which we're calling Cleaning Up Redux. During the break between seasons, we'll be republishing some gems from our back catalogue, which now covers nearly 200 episodes. To kick us off, today we'll be listening back to episode 68, from Season 4, released in December 2021. It's a conversation with Amory Lovins, whom I dubbed the Einstein of Energy Efficiency. Amory is the co-founder and former chairman and chief scientist of the Rocky Mountain Institute. He is also the author of more than 30 books and 700 papers, and now an Adjunct Lecturer in Atmosphere and Energy at Stanford University.I first became familiar with Amory's work even before I founded New Energy Finance journey, as a fierce promoter of the cause of energy efficiency by design, and equally fierce opponent of the idea of any role for nuclear power. Amory and I do not see eye to eye on everything, but we have become good friends and occasional sparring partners.Amory joined me on Cleaning from his passive house high up in the Rocky Mountains, which is so warm despite not having any active heating that, at the time of recording, he had produced 78 crops of indoor bananas – a fact of which he is rightly proud. The reason I chose this episode to kick off Cleaning Up Redux is that, in these very turbulent and politicised times, it has a refreshing back-to-basics feel. If you can save energy you save money, and that is always a good thing. If we all focused more on making clean energy cheaper for consumers and businesses, and a bit less on persuading politicians to do things that drive up energy costs, the transition might be moving a lot faster.I hope you enjoy my December 2021 conversation with Amory Lovins.Further reading: IEA Energy Efficiency 2021 report: https://www.iea.org/reports/energy-efficiency-2021 Official bio: https://rmi.org/people/amory-lovins/ How Big Is the Energy Efficiency Resource?  (a half-hour summary talk is at https://energy.stanford.edu/events/special-energy-seminar-amory-lovins-holmes-hummel) https://doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/aad965 Recalibrating Climate Prospects https://doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/ab55ab Can a Virus and Viral Ideas Speed the World's Journey Beyond Fossil Fuels? A meteorologist in Mississippi went viral for uttering six simple yet profound words during his weather forecast on March 24, 2023. Matt Laubhan was tracking a severe storm when he realized a catastrophic tornado was about to bear down on the town of Amory. That’s when Laubhan paused on live TV to say this prayer heard worldwide: “Dear Jesus, please help them. Amen.” Some viewers later said that prayer prompted them to take cover. His spontaneous and heartfelt prayer may have helped save countless lives. Our prayers can make a difference too. They don’t have to be long-winded. They can be short and sweet and can be said at any time of the day. Whether we’re at work, running errands, or on vacation, we can “pray continually” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). God loves to hear us pray throughout the day. The apostle Paul reminds us that we don’t have to be prisoners of worry or fear but can take all our cares and concerns to God: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). Whether we’re enjoying a sunny day or being hit by the literal or figurative storms of life, let’s remember to pause and pray throughout the day.

In this episode, guest Kyle Kazanjian-Amory, aka Kyle KA, founder and CEO of Don't Tell Comedy ‪reveals how his experience as a comedian inspired him to promote his own events, and built his brand from booking a handful of popup shows with stand up comics like Sam Jay and Katherine Blanford, with a focus on throwing affordable comedy events in places other than traditional comedy clubs, into a scaled organization that books shows in over 100+ cities a month, and is now a launching pad for up-and-coming comics. Barry and Kyle discuss how Don't Tell Comedy helped Andy Huggins break through into booking $50,000 worth of gigs, how Kyle and DTC persevered through the pandemic building their YouTube and social media channels, and how Kyle is now producing comedy specials without abandoning the ethos of Don't Tell Comedy by continuing to book shows in unlikely spaces. After Andrew delayed us with his stupid birthday and anniversary, Presley had the audacity to forget to edit the audio for a week. So now the City is on Fire while everyone is up in arms waiting for this latest episode. All our Links: https://linktr.ee/seasononepodSeason Spoiler Synopsis: City on Fire is an Apple TV+ American crime drama, based on the novel of the same name. Based in 2004 New York City, City on Fire follows Charlie (Wyatt Oleff), detectives, and the Hamilton Sweeney family after Sam (Chase Sui Wonders) is shot in Central park on July 4th. An underground music scene, a wealthy real estate family, and mysterious city-wide fires are all connected by Sam, who is friends with a band in the underground music scene and had an affair with the husband of a Hamilton Sweeney. Charlie gets swept up in rebellion against gentrification in New York City, while Regan (Jemima Kirkle) and Will (Nico Tortorella) Hamilton Sweeney fight to save their company from an outsider pulling strings to steal the company away from their family. Charlie makes friends with Sam's friends--the band Ex Post Facto. The band is lead by pyromaniac Nicky Chaos (Max Milner) and is responsible for the many fires and bombings that take down many buildings around New York. Amory Gould (John Cameron Mitchell) is plotting to take over the real estate empire by any means necessary and has resorted to funding Nicky and friend's lifestyle and hiring them to burn buildings in the neighborhood to purchase buildings at a lower cost meanwhile framing Bill Hamilton Sweeney for financial crimes. Detectives diligently search for answers as Sam hangs on by a thread in critical care, ultimately discovering Amory is at the head of the takeover. Charlie diffuses a bomb to save a city block in New York City, finds that the culprits of the shooting are Sewer Girl (Alexandra Doke) and Sol (Alexander Pineiro), and rushes to Sam in the hospital during a city wide blackout to find her awake at the end of the series.

Jamie talks to people "who became briefly notorious on the internet about how it affected their mental health, amongst other things," she says. Loftus explores the timing and context in which these "main characters" of the Internet, as she calls them, went viral and asks what their virality says about us, the people who helped — made? — them go viral in the first place.

Beyond All Repair has mostly wrapped, but if there are updates in the story or the case, Amory will jump back in here to let you know, so keep following the show! In the meantime though, I wanted to introduce you to another show. It's from Campside Media and it's called White Devil. It's a series that, at first, seems to be a crime story… but there are so many layers to this. It starts with a woman who's a member of one of the most powerful families in Belize. She's found on a pier late at night, next to a body. It becomes the country's biggest news story in a generation. This is the first episode of White Devil. Host Josh Dean — who you might know from The Clearing or Chameleon: Hollywood Con Queen — takes us back to the beginning, in 2021, when the nation of Belize was rocked by a shocking death and the arrest of this influential woman. Most people expected that she would just… walk away. But nothing in White Devil is QUITE as it seems… Listen to White Devil wherever you get your podcasts.

Episode No. 648 features curator Dita Amory and artist Isabelle Frances McGuire. Along with Ann Dumas, Amory is the curator of "Vertigo of Color: Matisse, Derain and the Origins of Fauvism," which is at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston through May 27. The exhibition presents works Henri Matisse and André Derain made in Collioure, a fishing village in the south of France, in the summer of 1905. The work the two men made that summer was crucial to the development of fauvism, the first significant movement of twentieth-century art. The exhibition catalogue was published by the Met. Amazon and Bookshop offer it for $42-47. McGuire's work is on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago in "Descending the Staircase." The exhibition, which considers artists' approaches to the human body, was curated by Jadine Collingwood and Jack Schneider. It is on view through August 25. McGuire is a Chicago-based artist whose work considers the body and how our understanding of it can be filtered by video games, film, animatronics, and other technologies. This is their first inclusion in a museum exhibition; they will also be on view at Artist's Space, New York, next month.

Sean Correia's credibility is called into question as Sophia Johnson and Shane Correia tell reporter Amory Sivertson about his role in their upbringing. Amory learns how these three siblings ended up in Washington state after being raised in New York, and how Sophia became estranged from Shane and their mother, with whom she'd been incredibly close. Sophia finds a new family in the Johnsons — Brad, her husband, and Marlyne and Richard Johnson, Brad's parents. At the time of the murder, Sophia is newly wedded to Brad and six months pregnant. Marlyne is supposed to go over to Sophia's house for lunch that day. She doesn't show, leading Sophia and Brad to check on her, and, ultimately, to her lifeless, nearly unrecognizable body.
