In today's episode of Discover Daily, we explore Microsoft's new AI-powered PCs branded as "Copilot+PC," which integrate on-device AI capabilities and cloud-based large language models to enhance performance and user experience. These PCs feature Qualcomm's X Elite SoC with a powerful Neural Processing Unit and innovative features like "Recall" for logging user activities. We also discuss the controversy surrounding OpenAI's ChatGPT voice model, which closely resembled Scarlett Johansson's voice, leading to legal concerns and broader discussions about the ethical implications of AI voice models and deepfakes.Next, we look into Scarlett Johansson's legal battle over the unauthorized use of her voice and likeness in an AI-generated advertisement by the app Lisa AI: 90s Yearbook & Avatar. Johansson's strong reaction highlights the need for stricter regulations to prevent the misuse of AI-generated content. We then cover Neuralink's FDA approval for a second human trial of its brain-computer interface, aiming to help individuals with severe paralysis regain control over digital devices.

Let's go! Buon ascolto e come sempre… Ci vediamo dall'altra parte!

British officials and space scientists said they were disappointed but not deterred after the first attempt to launch satellites into orbit from the U.K. ended in failure. U.S.-based Virgin Orbit attempted its first international launch late January 9, using a modified jumbo jet to carry one of its rockets from Cornwall in southwestern England over the Atlantic Ocean. The plane released the rocket, carrying nine small satellites for a mix of civilian and domestic uses. But about two hours after the plane took off, the company reported “an anomaly that has prevented us from reaching orbit.” The plane, piloted by a Royal Air Force pilot, returned to Cornwall. The rocket and satellites were destroyed. “We're feeling awful, to be honest – I'm not going to lie,” Melissa Thorpe, head of Spaceport Cornwall, said. “This isn't the first time we've been knocked, this is the biggest definitely, but I feel OK and we'll get up and we'll go again,” she said. Virgin Orbit, which was founded by British transport and telecommunications tycoon Richard Branson, previously completed four similar launches from California. Hundreds of people gathered for the Cornwall launch had cheered when a repurposed Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 aircraft, named Cosmic Girl, took off last Jan. 9. Around an hour into the flight, the plane released the rocket at around 35,000 feet (around 10,000 meters) over the Atlantic Ocean to the south of Ireland. Virgin Orbit chief executive Dan Hart said “a technical failure appears to have prevented us from delivering the final orbit.” “While we are very proud of the many things that we have successfully achieved as part of this mission, we are mindful that we failed to provide our customers with the launch service they deserve,” he said. The mission was a collaboration between the U.K. Space Agency, the Royal Air Force, Virgin Orbit and Cornwall Council. Britain hopes to become a major player in making and launching satellites and is building a spaceport in the Shetland Islands north of Scotland as well as the one in Cornwall. Escaping Gravity: My Quest to Transform NASA and Launch a New Space Age The Authors on the Air Global Radio Network presents, Books, Kids & Creations with Tracy Blom a podcast that features people who inspire and uplift future generations with their work. In this episode we sit down with Lori Garver, Former NASA Deputy Administrator, to discuss her experience with NASA, serving under multiple presidents, persevering even when it seems like everyone is against you, and of course, her new book, Escaping Gravity: My Quest to Transform NASA and Launch a New Space Age. About the Author: Lori Garver was the principal advisor on aerospace issues to three presidential candidates and led the NASA transition team for President Obama. She served as the Deputy Administrator of the Space Agency from 2009 to 2013 and is known as an architect of the new era of commercial partnerships that allow SpaceX to carry astronauts to and from the International Space Station. Garver is the founder of the Brooke Owens Fellowship, an internship and mentorship program for collegiate women interested in pursuing space careers. She is the recipient of the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award for Women in Aerospace and has been awarded three NASA Distinguished Service Medals. She lives in Washington, DC. About the Book: “Former NASA official Lori Garver offers a front-row seat to the decades-long struggles within and among space bureaucrats and space billionaires. Bring popcorn, as you bear witness to an untold slice of space history.” —Neil deGrasse Tyson, Astrophysicist and author of Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier Escaping Gravity is former NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver's firsthand account of how a handful of revolutionaries overcame the political patronage and bureaucracy that threatened the space agency. The success of Elon Musk's SpaceX, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic, and countless other commercial space efforts were preceded by decades of work by a group of people Garver calls “space pirates.” Their quest to transform NASA put Garver in the crosshairs of Congress, the aerospace industry, and hero-astronauts trying to protect their own profits and mythology within a system that had held power since the 1950s.
